I am very fortunate to see the many different types of PGA Professionals

that make up our wonderful Section. The titles and roles may be similar

but the different dynamic that each PGA Professional brings to their

facility is what I enjoy seeing. I had the good pleasure of sitting down

with a friend I hold in high regard. He said to me “we only have a

certain number of summers in this business to leave our mark. We all

have a place and a purpose and have been given the talents to make a difference. He further

articulated that to lead and inspire people (the goal of any good PGA Professional) comes

from being available.” As we further discussed, it really

boiled down to how we use our time, how we delegate, and

how we inspire others to work. We all have different levels

of resources but those that are really successful seem to

find time to be there for the people they are trying to

impact. You may be like me and be scratching your head

and saying…how do I add more to my schedule? After I

thought about it…the very person that delivered this

message has never complained about being too busy. In

fact, I could argue that he has more on his plate than anyone I know. Most importantly, after

a little introspection...my go to line/s are “I am slammed, full plate, running in circles, etc.”

It opened my eyes that time is ours and it is personal. How we use time is only ours to

blame. Wouldn’t it be better if we made sure it was always available to those that needed it

most?

FROM THE OFFICERS DESK

Thank you to all the golf professionals, and of course our great staff, for a very successful

Women’s Golf Day at the Quarry at Crystal Springs. Over 200 women registered and 20 PGA/

LPGA Professionals were on hand to deliver another first class experience. This event continues to

grow each year with more women looking for opportunities to add golf to their “fun things to

do” list. If you haven’t set up your programs in the Active.com website please do so to help

these women find your programs. Thank you to Callaway Golf, Noboleis Vineyard and

Michelob Ultra for their generous support.

The Gateway PGA Foundation has another great event scheduled for later this month. Ozzie Smith has come

through once again with not one but two outstanding guests for the annual REACH Pro-Am. Julius “Dr. J” Erving

and Joe Piscopo will entertain the crowd at a dinner on June 29th and a great day of golf is slated the next day with a

pro-am shamble format. Both events will be held at The Country Club of St. Albans with a few spots still available.

Joe Schwent, PGA

Gateway PGA President

Hello from the:

What a crazy WET start to the summer season. With a rain out

of the first event to a chance of rain at almost every event our

juniors have been great.

I just wanted to write a note to thank all the Golf Professional

and staff where we have been so far this season. As a PGA

member I am excited and encourage about how well Junior

Golf is received and being encouraged in all the places we

have visited. It is all of our future!

So I just wanted to share with all how grateful the Gateway

PGA Junior Tour is to all the Golf Professionals and their

staffs for welcoming the Junior Tour. We can’t run a

successful tour without your participation. We are in the

process of filling in our fall schedule for 2014 and even the

2015 season so you may here from us. If you would like to

host a Junior Tour event this fall or even next season please

reach out to me at [email protected].

GROWTH OF THE GAME

I love this time of year for many reasons… it’s warm, golf is in full-swing, I get to see our golf

professionals in action, and our growth of the game and foundation programming is non-stop.

Amidst all the activity and busy schedules, watching the level of PGA Professional involvement

rise and the correlating expansion of community and junior programs is beyond motivating.

How great are the Gateway Section’s Professionals?!

Included on page 4 of the newsletter is a detailed reflection of the 2014 Women’s Golf Day.

Please take a quick minute to read how over 20 of your fellow PGA/LPGA Professionals

volunteered their Sunday afternoon to bring golf to more than 150 female participants at the

Quarry at Crystal Springs. Thank you to Barbara Blanchar, Missy Brennan, Jill Bertram and

Nash Haxel!

One Drive, Chip, and Putt Qualifier down, four more to go! Congratula-

tions to the 24 who advance to the Sub-Regional Qualifier at WingHaven

CC in August. Thank you to Pheasant Run/Family Golf Headquarters and

Jeff Mullican for their hospitality and hosting. I can’t forget to note our

special guest – J. J. Weaver, PGA (Golf Professional at August National

Golf Club) traveled all the way from Georgia to help our staff and volun-

teers during this first event. Thank you!

Gavin Hagan, Foundation Programs Assistant, is doing some amazing

things with the College Combine this year. Our first step at creating a re-

gion-wide benefit for the area’s top high school golfers with an interest in

playing college golf has begun. Weeks of research, scouting, and planning

are leading us to a full-day Combine administered and run by PGA Profes-

sionals (YOU!) providing education and a platform for college hopefuls

and college coaches to communicate. Gavin has included some great in-

formation as well, so make sure you look through it and see where you can

help.

Let’s cap this thing off with a few more shout-outs. The Junior Develop-

ment Tour is in full “touring” mode having visited a few facilities already

this summer. Spencer T. Olin, Eagle Springs and Tim Davenport, Pheas-

ant Run and Jeff Mullican, Ruth Park and Doug Castellari, and Crescent

Farms and Helen Kurtin… what great junior development tour hosts –

thank you!

Ali Wells, PGA

Foundation Operations Director

My name is Gavin Hagar and I am currently

a student-athlete at Saint Louis University

studying Sports Business. This summer I

will be working closely with Ali Wells and

the rest of the Gateway PGA team in their

pursuit to grow the game of golf. I will be

helping prepare and run all of the Junior

Development tour events as well as the 3rd

annual Gateway PGA College Combine. The

combine is still a relatively new event with

plenty of room to innovate, and having

studied different sporting combines over the

years, the Section appointed me as the

official combine coordinator.

Over the past several months I have

developed a list of the top Midwest high

school golf prospects, and have been

reaching out to them and their families via

email, phone calls, and social media.

However, I understand that during my

scouting report I may have missed talented

golfers in the Midwest. For this reason I am

asking all Gateway PGA Pros to help me

invite talented local high school golfers. Our

ideal shot requirement for both male and

female golfers are listed here:

Boys 18 holes = 80 or below

Boys 36 holes = 160 or below

Girls 18 holes = 100 or below

Girls 36 holes = 200 or below

If any of the golfers you teach meet these

requirements please contact either Ali Wells

or myself. The date of the combine is July

21, so the sooner we hear back from you the

sooner we can officially invite your golfer!

Sub Regional Qualifier

The first Drive Chip and Putt Qualifier was held at Pheasant Run/Golf HQ on Friday,

June 6. We had 104 junior golfers participate and the entire event was a huge home run

thanks to the hard work by Ali Wells, her intern Gavin Hagar, the GPGA staff and vol-

unteers. The top three golfers with the highest point totals in each division qualify to the

Sub-Regional Qualifier at WingHaven Country Club on August 4. The final competi-

tion will be in advance of the Masters at Augusta National August 5, 2015. We wish all

our local qualifiers good luck on their way to the championship. Here is a list of the first

place qualifier in each division at Pheasant Run:

Boys 7-9: Benjamin Berger

Boys 10-11: James Hohls

Boys 12-13: Jack Cronin

Boys 14-15: Zach Shirley

Girls 7-9: Catherine Cronin

Girls 10-11: Haley Ritchie

Girls 12-13: Grace Aromando

Girls 14-15: Sarah Lewis

We need a minimum of 12 volunteers for each event in addition to the GPGA Staff. Please look at your

schedules and see if you can help at one or more of the upcoming qualifiers.

Call us and come join the fun, we need you!

ASSISTANTS CORNER The 2014 season for the assistants got off to a great start with our Pro-Am last month.

The Pro-Am was held on Monday, May 19 at Missouri Bluffs. 21 teams signed up and played

in this year’s event. The day kicked off with a Demo Day that included Callaway, Cleveland,

Nike, Taylor Made, and Titleist. The event was a 2 best balls of 4 shamble. We concluded the

day with appetizers and a silent auction. We would like to give a big thank you to Missouri

Bluffs on hosting a terrific event.

Congratulations to Barbara Blanchar and the team from WingHaven Country Club

on taking the title with a team score of 28 under. The team from Westborough Country Club

finished in 2nd with a team score of 25 under.

Our event couldn’t have been successful without the help of our sponsors and our Gateway PGA staff

members. We owe a lot to Bruce Rist of Cutter & Buck and National Car Rental for all of their help for this event.

They truly made this event a step above this year and we really appreciated their efforts and support.

Your 2014 Assistant’s Committee Members are:

I am sure many of you saw Scott Langley's putt on the 16th hole at The Memorial Tournament. The birdie putt stopped overhanging the hole. The ball, after about 20 seconds, fell into the hole. This situation is covered by Rule 16-2. Scott reacted to the putt as most of us would. He stood at the spot he had made the stroke from with a reaction of disbelief most golfers would have. This took about twelve seconds. He then walked toward the hole. When he got to a position even with the hole he watched the ball for a few seconds and then it fell into the hole. So lets look at the rule. Since his reaction was normal he did in fact reach the hole without unreasonable delay. He now had ten seconds to determine if the ball was at rest. He and fellow competitor Bubba Watson both thought the ball was still moving and watched it fall in eight seconds after Langley had reached the hole. Therefore the ruling was the ball had been holed with the second stroke on that hole. Interestingly David Feherty made a comment about the rules and making a stroke at a moving ball. The comment was made about two seconds before the ball fell in the hole. So his comment was correct. However if ten seconds had elapsed from the time Scott reached the ball it would not be a moving ball even if movement was observed. That is because the rule says once a player reaches the hole and ten seconds have passed the ball is DEEMED to be at rest. If the ball falls in after the ten seconds the ball is holed and the player adds a penalty stroke.

So in this case three scenarios were possible:

Scott reaches the hole and ball falls in prior to ten seconds elapsing HE SCORES 2 Scott reaches hole more than ten seconds pass and ball falls in HE SCORES 3 Scott reaches hole more than ten seconds pass and he taps it in HE SCORES 3 (EVEN IF MOVEMENT OF BALL IS OBSERVED).

The Golf Channel featured a Gateway Section PGA sponsor Monday, June 16th. The episode of “In Play with

Jimmy Roberts” included a 5 minute segment filmed in the pencil factory of our great sponsor, All Star Pro

Golf.

One of Jimmy Roberts’ segments is called “Golf Detective Matty Blake”. Blake, a New York based actor/

comedian seeks answers to such questions as “Where was golf first played in America” and “Where did the

Nassau Bet originate”?

This segment found Matty Blake seeking the origins of the often forgotten golf pencil. The Golf Channel se-

lected All Star Pro Golf’s headquarters in Spencer, Iowa because their factory produces tens of

million golf pencils each year.

Typically “warming up” before athletic activity results in making the body more pliable so you play

better; otherwise, it could take several holes or more to achieve such flexibility. In addition, a

pre-game routine helps to prevent injuries. Not sure how to approach warming up? It’s easy as 1-2-3.

Following are three steps to effective golf warm-ups:

1) Awareness – Be aware that you need to get your body ready to play golf. Start visualizing the golf

movement and golf swing in your mind.

2) Movement - As you get to the driving range or first tee, pick up a seven or eight iron, one end of the

same club in each hand and move the club in a swinging motion back and forth starting slow with

small gestures and then increasing the length of the gesture as you get used to the movement.

After you feel your body loosening up, take the handle of the club in both hands, first swinging back

and forth in a flat plane starting slowly. Once that feels relaxed, mimic the golf swing starting again,

starting slowly and increasing the swing length, as you feel comfortable. Also move your body the

opposite way in a swing motion just to add symmetry to your body.

As a last stretch take one end of the club in your right hand behind your back at the top of your

shoulder and bring your left hand around your waist to grab the other end of the club feeling a stretch

in your shoulder and hold for a count of 30. Now reverse that stretch with the left hand on top at your

shoulder behind your back and the right hand around your waist to grab the other end of the club. Hold

for a count of 30.

3) Hit - Now it is beneficial to hit some balls to get your swing down. Start with the shorter clubs and

increase to hitting the longer distance clubs. Hit several balls with four or five clubs; that way you

should feel comfortable using all the clubs in your bag.

After working your way through these steps, you’re ready to play. If you’d like to develop greater

flexibility and strength for your golf game, contact Optimal Lifestyles, Inc. at 314-984-0592. Barb or

Catherine will be happy to get you moving in the right direction.

BETZ & ANDERSON TAKE THE QUARRY PRO-OPEN TITLES Adam Betz scorched The Quarry at Crystal Springs GC with a 4-under par round of 66 to capture his first victory of the 2014 season. This is the 3rd year in a row that Adam has captured a Pro-Open Championship with the Gateway PGA. Betz's round was good enough to earn a one-shot win over Senior Divison Champion JC Anderson who finished at 3-under par 67. Anderson, winner of the last event at The Quarry in

2012, was looking to defend his title, went out on the front nine in 5-under par 31, but couldn't bring it in on the back and finished at 67. Also shooting 67 and tieing for the runner up spot at 3-under par was Gateway PGA rookie sensation, Emily Berryman of Quincy CC. Emily, who just enrolled in the PGA Apprentice Program this year, posted the best finish by a female in Gateway PGA Pro-Open history. Gideon Smith (Quincy CC), Rob Sedorcek (St. Albans CC), and Bob Gaus (Tower Tee GC) all tied for 4th at 68. Runner-up honors in the Senior Division behind Anderson went to Sedorcek & Gaus at 68. Larry Emery came home 4th with a 1-under par 69 and Garth Bayer (Old Warson CC), Steve Lotz (Tower Tee GC), Jeff Whitfield (The Quarry at Crystal Springs GC), and Mark Faulkner (Lake of Egypt CC) all tied for 5th at 1-over par 71. Whitfield earned the lion's share, $4000, of the $15,000+ purse in the only Par 3 event on the Gateway PGA schedule. JD Auping of Bellerive CC came up one stroke shy of Whitfield with a 5-under par 49. Chris Brant was 3rd with a round of 4-under, while host Professional and tournament organizer, Steve Lotz, came home 4th at 3-under. ESLER, HECKEL, & NOVARA EARN SOUTHERN IL OPEN TITLES

A large field of

Professional and

Amateurs turned out

for a great event at

Rend Lake Golf

Resort for the 2014

Southern Illinois

Open on June 9th.

Despite heavy rains over the weekend leading up to

the event, the course was in great shape and scores

were very good. Josh Esler of Wauconda, IL, won

the Regular Division with a 7-under par round of

101 while Steve Heckel racked up another Sr

Southern IL Open Championship finishing the day

at 4-under par 104, and Andrew Novara of

Murphsboro, IL, shot an impressive 8-under par

100, to win the Amateur Division & Overall Low

Medalist.

Finishing 1 shot back of

Esler was Adam Betz to

earn the runner-up spot

and Bellerive CC's Mike

Tucker came in 3rd at 5-

under par. Rounding out

the top 5 were Ryan

Roy, Gideon Smith, &

Dustin Korte, all who finished at 4-under par.

Chasing Heckel in the Senior Divison were Mark

Faulkner & Brian Fogt who tied for 2nd at 3-under

par. At 2-under par were Nash Haxel and Bob Gaus

who tied for 4th place.

Novara, a sophomore on the SIU Saluki Mens

Team, blazed around the 27 holes to earn the low

score of the day, topping some of the areas best

golfers. Finishing in second was Lyndsey Bevill,

who finished the day at 2-under par, and 3rd place

was tied between Tom Portner & Jaret Brewer.

Fogt Wins 1st Sr Match Play Title

It took all 18 holes, but Bellerive CC's Brian Fogt

outdueled defending champion Bob Gaus of Tower

Tee GC, to win his first Senior Match Play Ti-

tle. Sunset Hills CC was in great shape despite

over 4 inches of rain over

the past few days and the

greens were in perfect

shape for the players. Fogt

& Gaus went back and

forth the entire match with

neither player ever getting

more than 1 kup throughout

the day. After Brian

birdied #16 to go 1 up with

2 to play, Gaus came back

with a birdie on #17, his 7th birdie of the match, to

even the score going to #18. Gaus' tee shot missed

the fairway to the right, while Fogt's drive was in

the left rough. Both players had to navigate the

trees to get near the green. Fogt's shot came up

about 10 yards shy of the green while Gaus hit a

tree and went backwards into the fairway 140 yards

from the green. He then hit it on the green about 20

feet. Fogt chipped up to about 5 feet and after

Gaus' putt slid past the hole, Brian sunk to earn the

1 up victory.

Gaus beat Mark Faulkner 1 up in his semi-final

match while Fogt topped JC Anderson 5 & 4 for his

berth in the Championship Match.
