Wow, Halloween is over and National PGA Professional Season is

upon us (Day Light Savings). For you married Gateway PGA

members it is time to re-introduce yourselves to your spouse and/

or kids. I love this time of year because I really enjoy looking

back. I understand the notion of looking forward and not

dwelling on what’s in the past, however, I feel that our

experiences shape who we are and help us to be better today and in the future.

Whether you are talking about personal change or business change – I like to think

of this as the season of planning. Good plans are made by past experiences whether

they are positive or negative. Sometimes a little personal change can positively

affect business change. I do not want to get up on a soap box or play the role of a

psychologist but I do want to encourage our Gateway PGA Members to consider

putting time and effort into planning for 2014. Great ideas are fun to work up but

they mean nothing unless there is a plan that includes the details for execution. The

Gateway PGA sincerely invites you to come to us for help should you need it in

planning your growth of the game programs in 2014. Whether you take us up on

that offer or not – please take the extra time this off-season to create a great plan for

player retention and new player development.

We have a very busy calendar upon us with a few Gateway PGA staples with new

dates. Below you will see the promotions with dates and locations for the Annual

Gateway PGA Golf Sale, Awards Dinner, and Fall Meeting. I would like to

encourage our members to attend as many of these events as possible. I would

personally like to congratulate all of our award winners in the 2013 Gateway PGA

Season as well as those who took part in the process! I always enjoy the awards

process because it allows fellow PGA members to know more about one another.

Lastly, I would like to congratulate Jeff Schmid, Perchie Creek, and Adam Betz,

Meadowbrook Country Club, for their incredible play at the National Car Rental

PGA Assistants Championship presented by Cobra/Puma Golf. Both Jeff and Adam

finished in the Top 10 of 126 of the very best playing PGA Assistant Professionals

GROWTH OF THE GAME

Congratulations to Jeff Schmid & Adam Betz for representing the Gateway PGA so well at the

Assistant Championship in Port St. Lucie, Florida! It‘s been fun following you two and your

successes.

I don’t know of many people who would volunteer to organize an event that would feature over

120 women of all walks of life trying to learn one sport…that sounds downright challenging!

I don’t know of many, but I do know of three: Barbara Blanchar, Jill Bertram, and Missy

Brennan. These three ladies did a phenomenal job of organizing the largest and most

successful Women’s Golf Day in Gateway PGA history! On September 21, over 120 ladies

visited the Quarry at Crystal Springs for an afternoon of golf instruction, fitness tips,

cash-n-carry vendor shopping, and happy hour drinks – all for free! Featuring Get Golf Ready as a focal point,

ladies received tips and practice time from area PGA and LPGA Professionals in putting, chipping, pitching, and

full swing. Many of the attendees were already asking about next year! In addition to the three leading ladies, a

huge thank you goes to David Kohlberg and Callaway Golf for their help and participation. Also, thank you to

Michelob Ultra and those who volunteered their Saturday afternoon to share their passion of golf with those eager

ladies: Dennis Biedenstein, Michael Brown, Tom DeGrand, Nash Haxel, Bev Miller, and Maria Palozola. Check

out the pictures!

The first annual “Ozzie and Friends” benefit concert was held at the Chesterfield Amphitheater on Saturday,

September 28th. We welcomed American Idol finalist Nikko Smith, Theo Peoples of the Four Tops and the

Temptations, national jazz saxophonist Tim Cunningham, and nationwide comedian Henry Cho for an evening of

entertainment, Foundation awareness, and fun. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate but those who

stayed only saw a sprinkle or two. Already in full-blown planning for next year’s concert, Ozzie has big plans for

2014 and hopes to see many more PGA Golf Professionals out to support their Foundation and its initiatives.

As I wrap up my thoughts for this month, I want to take a special moment to congratulate all of the Section

Award Winners for 2013. Golf and the Gateway PGA are honored to have so many dedicated and deserving

professionals who serve this game and their community. As an example, I had the privilege of visiting

Washington Elementary School in Quincy, IL last week as Gideon Smith and his team introduced golf to

elementary students. Most of the kids, at or below the poverty line, would never have otherwise been exposed to

this sport. Watching them hit Golfzilla in the stomach, coming close to clocking the professional helper to their

side, completely missing the tee and hitting the gym floor, or receiving a high-five is about all it takes to put a

smile on my face and motive me to keep working until every kid gets the opportunity to play golf. I know you’d

feel the same way, too, if you were there.

Check out page 18 to view photos from all the events I’ve mentioned.

Now I’m REALLY wrapping this thing up. The annual Golf Sale is coming up November 15-17 and I hope to

see everyone there. Have a great November!

Foundation Operations Director

ASSISTANTS CORNER It is hard to believe but November is already here. While the off-season is right around the

corner there still is plenty going on with the assistants of our Section. The National PGA

Assistants Championship took place in Port St. Lucie, Florida at the Wanamaker course at the

PGA Golf Club. Jeffrey Schmid and Adam Betz were on top of the leaderboard all

week! Their unbelievable play represented our Gateway PGA Assistant Professionals in a

classy way. Sending only two PGA Assistants and having them both finish in the Top 7 is

quite the feat. Congratulations gentlemen on a great week and thank you for representing the Gateway PGA!

As we get into the off-season your committee will be meeting and planning ahead for 2014. We are always

looking for new faces and ideas so if you are interested please let us know. As always feel free to contact any one

of your committee members with any questions or ideas you might have.

RULES CORNER I recently received an email regarding an incident at the Illinois Girls State Championship.

Two girls putted at the same time. The balls, while in motion struck each other and were

deflected. One ball went into the hole. The other ball came to rest on the green.

Two rules need to be considered, Rules 16-1f and 19-5b. Rule 16-1f says, "The player must

not make a stroke while another ball is in motion after a stroke from the putting green, ex-

cept that if a player does so, there is no penalty if it was his turn to play".

Notice the inquiry said the girls putted at the same time. If they

did indeed putt at exactly the same time Rule 16-1f does not ap-

ply. Neither girl would have made a strike when another ball was

in motion. If they putted nearly at the same time the committee has to determine which

player was away. If it was the player that putted second was away there is no penalty. If it

was not her turn then she incurs a two stroke penalty.

Now what do the players do. The second paragraph in Rule 19-5b tells us both strokes are

cancelled and the balls must be replayed. On another note, don’t forget to sign up for a

PGA/USGA Workshop, click on the image to the left to view.

Just a reminder that the annual GPGA Golf Sale starts Friday, November 15 with the VIP Pre Sale.

The sale continues for everyone interested in great golf bargains and excellent merchandise on

Saturday and Sunday, November 16-17, 2013. While not every facility participates in the sale, we

are sure many of the golfers at your clubs and courses would like to know about the sale. You can

let them know details by printing and placing the flyer on the counter of your shops and announcing

to your membership. If you need a copy I will email it to you.

We are very happy about the new venue for the sale, The Missouri Athletic Club West. It is located

at 1777 Des Peres Road, Town and Country, MO 63131. This is the first year the sale is being held

at the MAC and it promises to be an excellent location for all.

Please ask for a copy of the flyer if you do not have one and place copies on your counter for your

customers to see. 636-532-3355 x 101 [email protected]

Employment “Chips”

Tim Marks, PGA | Employment Consultant | 815.630.5196 – Office | [email protected]

Understanding your Career-

Links Profile Having an understanding of your

CareerLinks Profile can help you

be identified for opportunities

that may exist in your area and

around the country.

Your Profile is the result of

the answers to the Member

Survey that you are asked to

complete at least every two years. The Profile

consists of your future employment preferences

including compensation, job position and section

and foreign relocation. It also consists of your skill

assessment, your full-time eligible employment

history and your contact information. It is

imperative that you have these set correctly in order

to be matched to jobs that you not only desire, but

are also qualified for.

Here are just a few things to make sure of when

updating your Profile:

Make sure your contact information is up-to-date

especially the email address you want

CareerLinks notices sent to.

Set your relocation preferences for the Sections

you are interested in relocating to, but also set

them based on when employers are likely to be

hiring. Example: If you are interested in the

Illinois Section make sure it is high on your

relocation preferences in the fall and winter.

This is high hiring season. Then when summer

comes switch your relocation prefs to the south

or west as Midwestern hiring slows down or is

non-existent and warmer climate facilities go

into their off season.

Make sure your future job preferences are set

accordingly. I have seen PGA members whose

highest desire is to see Head Professional

positions when open, but mistakenly set their

future preference for a Head Professional

position at a 5, the lowest priority.

It is a good idea to frequently update your skills

assessment as your job skills may have changed

since your last update. Say you become more

proficient with Food and Beverage, but do not

update your skills accordingly. For those who

want to see General Manager positions this is a

must skill to have listed correctly.

Make sure all of your past full-time work history

is listed. If it is not I suggest you call Member

Services at PGA Headquarters at 800-474-2776.

One of the attendants will be able to assist you.

Remember, PGM internships are not considered

full-time eligible employment and do not show

up on your work history.

It is also important to note that there is sometimes

confusion on how PGA Members and Apprentices

are alerted to job opportunities. There are currently

two ways the PGA works with employers on jobs

and alerts PGA Professionals. One is PGA

CareerLinks, which is for management positions

only (Head Professionals, General Managers, and

Directors of Instruction). PGA CareerLinks is based

off of your Profile and matches candidates based on

requirements by the employer. “Matched”

candidates are then sent an email alerting them to the

opportunity. Employers are then seeing only the

qualified candidates that fit their requirements and

not inundated with non-qualified resumes that can

flood an employer and ultimately drive down

compensation due to a perceived over supply of

candidates.

The second way to see opportunity is through PGA

Jobfinder. This avenue is a job “posting board” for

all non-management positions (assistant

professionals, golf staff, clubhouse staff, etc.). For

more information on both of these PGA employment

services you can visit our consumer site by clicking

HERE.

As always, please contact me if you have any

questions or assistance and I look forward to

attending your fall meeting in early December and

getting a chance to interact with as many of you as I

can.

Whether you are googling “Guaranteed Putting Tips” or “12 Ways to Get Better at Golf,” be wary of

what you read. We all have golf goals in mind for 2014, but trends on how to improve our game come

and go, with some being more credible than others. No matter what trends peak our interest, the

answer to playing better golf could be as simple as taking a few golf lessons, becoming more fit, or

just enjoying the great outdoors.

Let’s focus on fitness – that’s an important one. We know that a person in good physical condition is

better able to enjoy whatever they do. As we enter the “Eating Season”, let’s try to balance our overall

fitness with exercise so we can stay in shape for our golf game.

Following are some of the top Worldwide Fitness Trends for 2014:

Yoga

group personal training

strength training

body weight training

Other popular trends include outdoor activities, high-intensity interval training, circuit training,

wellness coaching, boot camp, sport-specific training and fitness, programs for older adults, and

exercise and weight loss. The survey was conducted by the American College of Sports Medicine’s

Betz & Emery Take Players Championship Titles

2013 TaylorMade Adidas Lake Team Event

Adam Betz of Meadowbrook CC played nearly a flawless 36

holes without a bogey to capture his 2nd consecutive Players

Championship title at Lockhaven CC. After winning in 2012

at Old Warson CC, Betz backed up his title firing back to back

rounds of 3-under par 69, to finish at 6-under par which was

good enough to edge JC Anderson by a single stroke. Ander-

son, fresh off his trip overseas and play in the PGA Cup

Matches came up just a bit shy finishing his second round at 2

-under par 70, one stroke off Adam's pace. Bob Gaus of Tower Tee GC, entered the final round as

the leader, came in the afternoon at even par and finished tied for 3rd with Brian Fogt. The finish

was good enough to lock up the Regular Player of the Year Title for Gaus. Shane Blankenship

rounded out the top 5.

Larry Emery of Crab Orchard GC, had to play a couple extra holes to

earn his top spot. At the end of 18 holes, Larry and Bob Gaus were

tied at 4-under par 68 and headed out to #17 for a sudden death

playoff to determine the champ. After tying the first 2 playoff holes,

the pair went to the tough 434 yard 10th hole where Emery made par

to earn the title. The rest of the top 5 in the Senior Division was JC

Anderson (69), Brian Fogt (71), and Jeff Whitfield & Rob Sedorcek

tied for 5th at 72.

After 3 days of golf, 3 different formats, 3 different courses, and 98 players, two teams tied at the

top of the leaderboard for the overall title in the 2013 Lake Team Event. For the first time,

TaylorMade Adidas Golf, sponsored the 3 day event and provided a healthy payout for the top

teams. The event which pairs PGA Professionals with peers or Amateur partners is a favorite of

many players and a great way to cap off the season. Rob Wilkin & John Richman of the Midwest

Section and Bryan Daniels & John Sparks (a), took the top spot with 3-day totals of 18 under par to

earn bragging rights. Daniels, also of the Midwest PGA, playing with his amateur partner, John

Sparks, a member at WingHaven CC, got off to a quick start in the 4-Ball competition at The Club

at Porto Cima, posting a round of 63 to pace the field on the first day. For the second round, play-

ers headed south on Highway 54 to Old Kinderhook GC, for the second round of the event. Chad

Proehl & Judd Gibb from the Iowa PGA, along with Jeff Schmid of the Gateway Section and his

amateur partener, Jerry Waitulavich, were low at 62 in the 2 Man Scramble. Osage National Golf

Resort hosted the third and final round on Wednesday for the Chapman Alternate Shot for-

mat. Mike Tucker of the Gateway PGA and his brother and Gateway PGA Hall of Fame Member

Jerry, up from Stuart, FL, posted an impressive 64 to take top honors the the River/Links cours-

es. Special Thanks go out to Dan Gillham, Mitch Benjamin, & Jeremy Rider, all of TaylorMade

Adidas Golf, for their support of the event. The 2014 version of the event has already been sched-

uled for October 20-22nd, 2014.
