1 What an exciting month for the Gateway PGA! We were able to wrap up the tournament season at Bellerive with the rescheduled Players Championship and TNT Par 3 Shootout. Congratulations to Mike Suhre for taking home the title and securing his Player of the Year Award. FROM THE OFFICERS DESK

Broad Consensus: The Gateway Golf Summit is a Resounding Success!

Your Gateway Section showed tremendous industry leadership at the Second Annual Gateway

Golf Summit on Monday, November 10, at Forest Hills Country Club! We had a total of 124

people attend the Summit, of which 59 were Gateway PGA Members.

One of the goals of the Summit is to bring together various industry leaders from the

numerous Golf Associations and Organizations in our Region. The Summit has provided us a vehicle to have an

open dialogue about our successes, challenges and collective aspirations for the game. We are making strides in un-

derstanding many of the Allied Associations and their challenges and we are moving towards more corroboration

among the groups in our area. Future Summits will become even more refined and focused, in an attempt to tackle

some of our biggest challenges on a more collective basis.

Four panel discussions were conducted, and while I would like to thank all of our panelists and moderators for

sharing their expertise with us, a few guests deserve special acknowledgement. We were very fortunate to have Pete

Bevacqua - CEO of the PGA of America, Thomas J. O’Toole, Jr. - President of the USGA, Tony D’Errico - Vice

President of the CMAA and Bill Maynard - National Board Member of the GCSAA sit on one of our panels. They

all took questions from those in attendance and provided us with their uniquely qualified perspectives on several

facets of the Golf Industry.

Special thanks to everyone involved, including your Section Staff, with Josh Riley and Ali Wells both taking

significant leadership roles in this year’s event. We are very fortunate to have such a talented bunch advocating our

position as industry leaders. Forest Hills, led by PGA General Manager Andy Crowe, were gracious hosts,

providing a venue and setup conducive to success.

Finally, thank you to our sponsors; Event Sponsors - Club Car and M&M Golf Car, Breakfast Sponsors –Titleist/

Chris Hahn and Foot Joy/Mike Govern, Break Sponsors Syngenta/Paul Carlson and Callaway/Davis Kohlberg,

Post-Event Hospitality Sponsors John Deere Landscapes/Doug Harskamp and Erb Equipment/Erik Parker and

finally Nike Golf/Michael Bechert and Kyle Szcesniak. Collectively, their sponsorships generated over $5000 that

will be channeled directly to local organic growth of the game efforts!

The planning process for the Third Annual Gateway Golf Summit is already underway. Please mark your calendars

for Monday, November 9, 2015, if you anticipate attending this informative and worthwhile event.

been supporters of the Foundation since its inception… even co-chairing the PGA REACH Pro Am earlier this

summer. Sue has volunteered her time for the next year and will serve as our Development Director. We could not

be more happy and thankful to have a dedicated and passionate person like Sue on our team. Please join me in

welcoming her.

It is really hard to believe this is already the November newsletter. This year feels like it has

flown by. Even though we are getting towards the end of the year there is still a lot going on with

the assistants of the Gateway Section.

Congratulations go out to Nic Bunning of Greenbriar Hills Country Club and George Schrage of

Quincy Country Club. Both were recently awarded the 2014 Gateway PGA Assistant

Professional of the Year. These are two well deserving individuals and congrats again to them!

The National Assistants Championship just concluded down in Florida and the Gateway

Section was once again well represented. Adam Betz and Brandon Veld both participated in the four day event in

Port St. Lucie. Both players made the 36 hole cut. Adam finished in a tie for 49th with a four day total of 299.

Brandon finished in a tie for 72nd with a four day total of 308.

I want to say thank you to all the PGA Professionals that helped make my first season as the Director of Junior

Golf so successful. The success of the Gateway Junior Tour and growing the game starts with the PGA Profes-

sionals and the clubs that not just host the tour but makes all the juniors feel welcome and want to continue to

play this great game we all love.

We finished the season strong with some great golf and great weather. We had a big field out at Tapawingo with

80 plus players. Thanks Kevin Triefenbach and his staff for providing a great venue for the tournament. We then

traveled out to see Kirk Porter at Bear Creek in Wentzville for the final event of the 2014 season. A great turn out

and nice fall day provided some great competition for the juniors.

I know all clubs have their junior programs and club tournaments but my goal is to make sure that all juniors and

parents know that the Gateway PGA Junior Tour is an option for all, from the beginner to the accomplished jun-

ior looking for great competition. You can click here for more information to share with juniors and the parents.

You can always give them my phone and email also to answer any questions about the tour. I would also like to

let all know that if it works for you and your junior programs I would be glad to come out to your junior kickoff

event next season to answer any questions about playing with the Gateway PGA Junior Tour and what division

would be best for their junior.

I am currently putting together the 2015 Tour Schedule and still need to fill some dates for all of our divisions :

Junior Development Tour, 9 Hole,18 Hole and 2 day Tour Divisions. If you would have the ability and would like

to host one of these tour events Please give me a call at 636-532-3355 x104 or email me at [email protected]

to talk about 2015.

Hope to see everyone on the course soon

Employment “Chips”

Please enjoy this “Gateway Employment

Chips” section of your email newsletter.

Every month I will be adding to the

subjects of these “brief” articles and

hoping to inspire your thought process

regarding your employment and/or your

facility. Please use and expand on the

information to make your employment

more successful!

Continuing on the subject of

resumes and cover letters from

the last Employment Chips…

Resume Openers – Custom-Fit For Each New

Opportunity!

In the last Employment Chips I offered some “bullet

point basics” about resumes and cover letters. You

should understand that these two documents are

marketing pieces for you as a potential candidate for a

new job opportunity. They should be viewed as “living

documents” that you should tailor or “custom-fit” to each

opportunity just like you fit a driver or set of irons to a

player. In this article I am going to address what is

arguably the most important part of your resume…your

resume opener that is in newspaper terms, the

information “above the fold” on page 1. The most readily

viewed and readable part of any document is the top half

of the first page.

Your resume heading should be stylish and include your

pertinent personal information including name, address,

phone number(s) and email. If you are a PGA Member,

displaying the PGA logo is a nice touch. Make sure there

is not too much white space in your heading; I have seen

resumes where the heading took up the top third of the

first page which is too much.

Just below your heading is possibly the most valuable

spot of your resume. Please do not make the mistake of

using a simple “Objective”, especially one that states

your “Objective”! Don’t start out with an “Objective”

like this, Qualified PGA Member seeking to fulfill a

lifelong dream of a head professional position at a fine

club where my expertise and experience will bring

member satisfaction” You are telling the employer what

you want, that is a waste of precious resume real estate.

Ideally you start with some type of “Resume Summary”

or “Career Profile” that is specifically designed

(custom-fit) to that particular job. It will focus on the

areas of your experience, expertise or background that

will hit each employer’s “hot buttons”. These

“hot-buttons” are things of highest importance to that

employer, things they have identified as traits of their

“ideal candidate”. Ask yourself two key questions: What

are the key targeted skills the employer is seeking in this

position, and what are my high-impact accomplishments

in these areas that will catch their attention? The

“Summary” is developed in response to the answers to

these two questions.

You could also provide a “skills” or “accomplishments”

area at the top of your resume, whether you do a bullet

point list or brief paragraph, you must target what is

important to that employer. Tie your background and

experience to what the employer is seeking. The resume

summary and/or the skills area should set the tone for the

rest of the resume. Do not start with a narrative that just

reads like a job description.

To find out an employer’s “hot-buttons” requires

research on your part. Read any published information

about the job (for CareerLinks jobs closely review the

“Priorities and Success Factors”), hit the facility website,

use your professional network to make inquiries

(including the PGA Employment Consultant who worked

the job), if you know someone at the facility or who

previously worked there, contact them. Any way you can

find out more about the job, the facility or the employer

can help you craft your Resume Summary to market you

most effectively for the position.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions

about this information or any other employment related

matters.

Barb Michael is a health and fitness consultant and fitness education sponsor for the Gateway PGA. Her company, Optimal Lifestyles, Inc. provides general fitness, golf-fitness and yoga for golfers. The information provided by Barb is for education purposes and should not replace care or advice of your physician. Please check with your physician if you are beginning an exercise program or suspect you are ill.

Brought To You by Optimal Lifestyles, Inc.

As we transition into colder weather, we tend to slack off on our exercise routines, but it’s important to

keep fitness a top priority. That way we’ve got stamina for winter adventures and we’re ready to start

golf again at the first sign of warm weather here.

Be aware of seasonal weather challenges. We typically think of hydration as a summertime concern,

but hydration is as much a cold weather factor as it is in summer. When we’re cold, we may not feel as

thirsty so it’s important to pay attention to fluid intake. Dehydration can cause individuals to become

susceptible to winter colds and the flu, and it negatively impacts performance, training, and recovery.

Dehydration can occur when we don’t take in enough water to compensate for the water lost during

exercise. How do we know if we’re dehydrated? Thirst is usually an indicator but when

we feel thirsty, we are already on our way to dehydration. Another factor is checking the

color of our urine. If it is pale and plentiful, we are hydrated. If the urine is dark and

scant, we are dehydrated. Other symptoms are irritability, headache, fatigue, dizziness,

loss of coordination and nausea.

Awareness, recognition and education are the way to help prevent hydration during cold

weather training. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends

taking in 5 ounces for every 20 minutes of exercise.

Following are two cold weather factors to consider:

In cold weather, you can still lose water even if you don’t sweat. The steam escaping

from your mouth is water vapor and it can contribute to dehydration if you’re exercising outside or in

frigid temperatures.

Extra clothing can cause our bodies to work harder in cold weather and therefore, need more hydration.

Also be aware that caffeine is a diuretic and pulls water out of your body. Fruits, vegetables and soups

are natural source of water. Drink before and after exercise. Proper hydration in winter can keep our

muscles and bodies performing at their optimal level.

Scott Bess of

Columbia, MO,

hit his shot to

5'5" to win the

Inaugural TNT

Shootout at Bel-

lerive CC. 27

Gateway PGA

Pros were lined

up all with a sin-

gle shot at a hole

140 yards in distance. The closest of those wins a

new customized Yamaha Golf Car compliments of

TNT Golf Car & Motorsports. Terry Traeder, Jason

Traeder, & Chris Hempen, all of TNT, made this

season long event a reality. Look for Scott's new

ride next season if he chooses to use it at our 2015

Majors.

Brian Fogt & JC Anderson teamed up again at the

annual TaylorMade Lake Team Event to win their

4th title in the past 7 years. After wins in 2008,

2010, and 2011, the duo got off to a fast start in the

4-Ball portion at Porto Cima and never looked back

on their way to a 4-stroke victory. With the low

score of 65, 7-under par, at Porto Cima, they backed

it up with a 10-under par 61 in the Scramble at Old

Kinderhook and a 6-under par 66 at Osage National

in the Chapman Alternate Shot to finish the 54 hole

event at 23-under par. Three teams tied for 2nd at

19-under par. They were Dan Frost & Adam Hoff-

man, Steve Lotz & Bob Gaus, and Darin Fisher &

Chris Black. Frost & Hoffman tied for low in the 4-

Ball and also had the low score in the Champman

shooting an 8-under par 64. Fisher & Black, both

from the Iowa PGA, also tied for low in the 4-Ball

competition. Defending Champions Bryan Daniels

& John Sparks were low in the Scramble with a 12-

under par 59 at Old Kinderhook. Special Thanks to

Dan Gillham of TaylorMade for his support of the

event. The 2015 Lake Team Event will be held

October 19-21st, 2015.

52 incredible years. Dogwood Hills Golf Resort

has dedicated itself to providing exceptional per-

sonal care to our customers and would like to thank

everyone that has had a chance to become part of

the history that has made this property so loved.

Gary Mitchell, a partner of 34 years says “I have

made many special memories and relationships

during my history with Dogwood Hills and I would

like to send a sincere thank you to those who were

a part of those special moments. I will never forget

but I think our future plans for Dogwood will con-

tinue this great tradition.” The closing schedule for

Dogwood Hills is as follows: Mitch and Duffs

Restaurant closed November 2nd, Dogwood Hills

Hotel will be closing on November 8th, and the

Golf Course will be closing as of November 16th,

2014. While Dogwood is closing the majority of

the facility, we are pleased to offer our Practice Fa-

cility and Driving Range which will continue to be

open to the public. Melissa Hunter, Dogwood Hills

General Manager said, “Throughout the years, it

has been our dedicated staff responsible for such a

friendly atmosphere that our customers look for-

ward to each time they visit. We have been so for-

tunate to have such an incredible staff committed to

making our customers at home.” Over the years,

Dogwood Hills has been the largest golf package

provider at the Lake of Ozarks. “As our customers

are very important to us, it is essential that we

make sure they have a smooth transition to other

facilities in the Lake Area. It is our goal to work

with the Lake of Ozarks Golf Council to accommo-

date their specific needs, and relocate them to other

Lake Gol Courses and Lodging Facilities,” says

Melissa Hunter. The Lake of Ozarsk Golf Council

is an organization with members of ten local lodg-

ing facilities and thirteen golf courses devoted to

promoting golf, memberships, and golf packages

for the Lake of Ozarks.
