WORDS FROM gasolineIt’s June and it’s time for summer! We made it through a mild winter in North Dakota and now we can take off our hoodies and bust open our sleeveless t-shirt drawer. In our last issue we featured a one-of-a-kind barn find that hopefully got you amped up for the riding season. So, what do we have in store for you in this wonderful issue? Funny that you should ask, ‘cause this issue is REAL neat! We will be checking out trillion dollar rooms from across the world, including rooms with pools on top of other pools and waterfalls with mermaids swimming below. Psych! You really think we want to see that sh*t! No! We want to see radical motorcycles, hot babes and more motorcycles! That’s why we ride isn’t it? We ride to be FREE and enjoy life, and that’s what Gasoline Magazine is all about.

For June we will actually be checking out a classic shovelhead that has been popping up in shows around the Dakotas for the last couple years. Then, we will look at a few beers that make our top 10 list to drink when the summer sun is beating down on 130 degree blacktop. Next, flip to the centerfold to check out June’s Gasoline Gal. We also brought back our word find for another issue. Yes! The word find was just something for us to use as a filler last month, but when over 100 people sent ‘em back, we decided to switch it up a bit and add more for you! Instead of cash, we’ll be giving away some Gasoline products! Be sure to check that out, everyone enjoys a great word find. Also in this issue we have an awesome selection of products to scope out and a how-to from our friends at Biltwell.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy this issue of Gasoline Magazine. Once you’re done reading, throw it in your back pocket, jump on the chopper, hit the open road and enjoy the summer! We’ll see you around! If you see us first, make sure to stop us and chit chat, we love meeting our readers and we are always looking for more local bikes to feature as well.

Peace out MF! - Gasoline Mag

Biltwell Kung Fu GripsSo you bought that stock bike and want to customize it a little more, but you don’t know where to start and you don’t have much cash. okay, let’s get down to the basics. First thing you can change are those ugly stock handlebar grips. You know, the ones that don’t feel just right and have that darn badge on them. Who wants to have the badge all over your stuff anyway? Makes it look like you’re another one of those guys who walked into the stealership and bought everything on the parts wall. Lame! Check out what our friends at Biltwell have in stock for you. These are their Kung Fu Grips. You remember riding your BMX bike when you were a kid? We sure do, and that’s why we recommend swapping out your stock grips for some simple and comfortable Kung Fu Grips. They have thick ends, the small flanges are attractive, and the million little rubber fins are comfy.

Fire up your computer, go to www.biltwellinc.com,and order some of these bad boys up.They come in black or natural and are available for 7/8” and 1” bars, plus they’ll only run you $17.99. Turn to page 26 for step by step instructions on how to put the Kung Fu Grips on your bike. “Wow, thanks Gasoline and Biltwell for making my life easier!” That’s what you’ll be saying when you’re done and hittin the streets on your bike.

Baas Metal Craft Alright, now this product you can’t just run to Target and buy. Why? Because this is one-of-a-kind garage art made by a real biker, who fabricates metal into works of art. Meet Kevin Baas, a local biker from the Twin Cities in Minnesota, who teaches kids about working with their hands and creating not just motorcycles, but art out of metal. Kevin has been hitting the custom sign market, and here are a few things he has worked on. You can buy some of these or have some custom stuff made up. Either way, this is some awesome stuff to hang in your garage.

Contact Kevin by visiting him online at www.baasmetalcraft.com or call him at (952) 215-1252

FRC Smokin’ Gun Frame - Sportster™So you bought a Harley-Davidson Sportster this weekend and you realized that you lost it at the bar on Friday night. Every bike looked the same and some guy in sweatpants and a Twins cap jumped on your bike accidentally before he found his own Sportster. Yep, that’s right, some tool has the same bike as you and now you look as dumb as him, what’s a homie to do?

Easy! Make it into a hard-tail and swap all your stock stuff to a Flyrite frame. Flyrite has many frames to choose from that all your parts will fit into, and you can spend under a grand to get it. Don’t have a Sportster? Don’t worry, they make hard-tail frames for all types of motorcycles. If you have a Sportster, check out the Smokin’ Gun, it has a 33 degree rake and no stretch in downtubes. The frame is set up for 1986-2003 Sportsters, that excludes rubber mount Sporties.

Visit Flyrite online at www.flyritechoppers.com to check out the Smokin Gun and many other frame options.

TOP 10 BEERS

By Chad Hatzenbuhler and Dan Geiger Photo Credit: Chad Hatzenbuhler

Alright folks we had a brilliant idea to bring you the top ten beers of our

choice. This was a tough one. In order to bring such an exhilarating story to our pages, we had to do a bunch of research. And by research, I mean taste testing. I know, I know. Where do we find the time you ask? It’s tough, but we always allow ourselves a few extra days a month strictly for magazine work! Prior proper planning my friend!

Now these obviously aren’t the best beers as judged by pros, these are the best beers judged by us here at Gasoline. So actually, I guess you could call us pros...err, whatever. These are beers that we think will drink pretty well on a hot day, or at the end of a long day, or in the morning to start the day, depending on who you are.

Some of our go-to beers aren’t super run of the mill, so for this issue we’ll stick with some basics you can probably find at your local watering hole. Next issue we’ll get all high brow and feature some specialty brews for those of you that ride $30,000 bikes and enjoy expensive beer! Yeehaw!

If some of these beers aren’t to your liking, we don’t care! Don’t drink them if you don’t like ‘em! Different strokes for different folks! Just keep in mind, if you don’t like a kind of beer at first, just stick with it. The taste usually improves after the 3rd or 4th one. It’s magic!

TOP 10 BEERS #10 SCHLITZThe Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous. Try one out buddy. It’s back in all its glory. Drinking this will almost do the same for your cool factor as having a tattoo. Chicks will dig it. Dudes drinking Bud Light will look the other way. “When you’re out of Schlitz, you’re out of beer”. Yes you are.

#9 COORS LIGHTIf you’ve gotta drink a light beer, this is what you’ll want to drink instead of Bud Light. It tastes better. The Silver Bullet baby. All the cowboys I know drink this. You know all those John Wayne movies where he ordered a beer at the bar? It was probably Coors Original. His horses always drank Coors Light though.

#8 MGD 64 If you are watching your figure and like beer that tastes like a regular beer that somebody dumped half out and filled it back up with water, this is your beer! If you are trying to show people how well you can hold your liquor, this is your best bet! Just pour it in a frosty mug first so you don’t get made fun of when they see what you’re drinking. Low calories though, ya know?

#7 OLD MILWAUKEEIf this wasn’t the first beer we ever got drunk off of, I don’t know what is! We won’t say where we got it, but I’ll be damned if it doesn’t taste better now than it did back those first times! Your grandpa probably has a case of warm ones out in the shed you could sample!

#6 BLUE MOON BELGIAN WHITEIf you’re a fruity biker, or a chick, you’ll just adore this beer! What a fruitful orange glass of tastiness! Mmmm. If you drive a Ford pickup, you’ve probably never heard of this beer. Try one out one time, at home, not at The Silver Dollar in front of your buddies.

IF YOU’RE UNDER AGE 30 AND DRINK THIS, YOU PROB-ABLY JUST DRINK IT CAUSE IT’S THE HIPSTER THING TO DO. IF YOU’RE OVER 40, YOU’VE PROB-ABLY BEEN DRINKING IT SINCE YOU WERE UNDER 30. IF YOU’RE UNDER 21, DON’T DRINK IT.

Page 11: Gasoline Magazine - Issue No.15

#5 DOS EQUIS AMBERWe don’t always drink beer, but when we do......... This stuff is actually pretty good. The Amber is better than the other plain stuff. Try it out. It’ll make you more interesting.

#4 COORS ORIGINALMmmmmm, The Banquet Beer. Everyone drinks Coors Light seems like. Some places don’t even have Coors Original. A place without Coors Original is a place you don’t wanna be anyway though, brother. This stuff gives me a booming headache of a hangover the next morning if I get carried away, but I’ll be damned if I don’t look cool drinking it the night before!

#3 PBROh man! Throw me a PBR bra! If you’re under age 30 and drink this, you probably just drink it cause it’s the hipster thing to do. If you’re over 40, you’ve probably been drinking it since you were under 30. If you’re under 21, don’t drink it.

#2 GRAIN BELTGosh fricken darn is this some tasty beer. And it’s brewed right in Minnesooota. The label on the bottle is kinda understated, but it’s what’s inside that counts; just like mom used to tell the fat kid. Drink one of these and tell people how you like to drink local beer. They’ll dig it!

#1 BUDWEISERThe King of Beers. Duh. Nothing shows you’re a man like showing up to a BBQ with a case of Budweisers. Most people will automatically assume you ride a Harley and have a hot girl at home if you order a Budweiser at the tavern.

Bikers and motorcycle fanatics from across North Dakota, surrounding states and Canada have planned for this weekend since the last pat on the back of farewell from last year. If you do not have June 8th thru the 10th off from work - call in sick! This is one weekend you should be hanging with the bikers!

ABATE of North Dakota is a not-for-profit, social membership-driven, organization dedicated to preserving motorcyclists’ freedom of choice and freedom of the road. Our main goal is to promote motorcycle safety, awareness, training and protect the rights of motorcyclists everywhere.

In the early 1970’s, a mandatory helmet use bill was first introduced in North Dakota and that bill brought the motorcycle community together. Easyriders magazine and a few supportive groups formed a new national organization named ABATE, standing for “A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments”. Presently, depending on the state, the letters stand for “American Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education”, or American Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments”. Whatever the name, all ABATE organizations around the country share the same common concerns and goals.

The members of ABATE of North Dakota volunteered countless hours creating a successful grass roots campaign that persuaded the North Dakota legislature to agree that a mandatory helmet use bill was not the answer - Education and Training is. This accomplishment called for a celebration, so, the first ABATE membership appreciation party and fund raiser was born.

Much to our founders surprise, 37 years later, we are still active in promoting motorcycle safety and awareness. The little volunteer appreciation party has grown into ABATE’s yearly fund raiser and celebration of brotherhood. Even if you don’t ride, you will have a great time with plenty of entertainment, games, food, refreshments and, of course,

The ABATE of North Dakota

State Motorcycle Rally is just

fantastic people. The rally is held at the beautiful Menoken Grove, 13 miles east of Bismarck, ND on I-94 - exit 170. ABATE members nation wide and members of SMRO’s (State Motorcycle Rights Organizations) over the age of 21 are considered “Members” so they only pay the $25.00 gate fee for a weekend of fun.

The gates open Friday, June 8th at noon. ABATE Membership/SMRO cards and photo identification are required for entry. All camping is primitive, tents are free and campers pay a $10 fee for the weekend. Three bands will entertain you until the early morning hours both Friday and Saturday. “Battery”, the #1 Metallica Tribute band in the U.S., will headline with Relevant and Twice As Hard rocking you for the weekend.

Saturday at Noon you will want to grab your lawn chair, blanket or a blade of grass to watch the motorcycle challenges and people games for entertainment that is sure to keep you laughing all afternoon. Be sure to bring your camera, you know pictures can say a thousand words and bikers always have a lot to say.

You can come prepared with your own food and beverages or you can ride in with only your smile and the bugs in your teeth, we’ve got you covered with 4 food vendors and a full service bar to keep you happy.

Need some new leather? Another T-shirt? Or some new ink? We have you covered there too.

Rain or shine, this is one biker weekend you will be planning to attend again - even before you leave the Grove.

If you ever get a chance to meet Dan Guenzi, take 20 minutes out of your day and sit back and listen to his stories. Dan is a bike and gun builder out of Glendive, MT.

I met him last year at the Bismarck Freedom Riders Bike Show and hit it off right away...

In 2011 Dan brought one of his builds that every biker should appreciate. After seeing it in the show I knew we needed to shoot some photos to show you, the viewer, this ride.

Dan was planning on building his own bike and ordered up a Paugcho rigid frame with a 34 degree rake and 0 stretch. A day before the frame was to come in, Dan’s shop burnt down and suddenly he had more important things to worry about, not to mention no place to build the bike. Instead of throwing his frame in the corner he brought his frame, along with a new bike table over to his friend CJ’s shop. “CJ suggested we build him a chopper, and when I say WE I mean it would be me building the bike and CJ watching me build,” said Dan jokingly. CJ had plans for a bike and had just purchased a shovelhead off eBay that would work perfectly with

Page 21: Gasoline Magazine - Issue No.15

No. 21www.gasolinemag.com

the frame that had just landed in his shop. Dan agreed to the build, and since he already had a few bikes and CJ actually had a plan, it would be a fun build.

Right from the start, the eBay motor had troubles, but with a little head work everything was cleared up. The transmission was built by a Rambler MC brother “One Eye” who lives out in California. (Side note: Dan is with the Ramblers Motorcycle Club in Ray, ND.) One Eye built this transmission in his shop just for CJ’s bike and after a few weeks it was shipped from California and delivered to Montana. One Eye builds many transmissions for bike builders in California and is well known for his reliable and durable products. Now that they had the motor and transmission, Dan and CJ grabbed other parts to finish this old school bike. The bike was an easy build, only taking 4 months for Dan and CJ. Dan ran into

Page 22: Gasoline Magazine - Issue No.15

Fuel Your Veins.™No. 22

a few problems with the electronic ignition; with Dan being color blind he had his 9 year old grandson Zak help him with the ignition. After some troubleshooting with a few buddies and Zak, the ignition issues were solved and it was running like a champ. The bike still has low mileage, but with summer being around the corner Dan plans on taking the bike on a few trips. “Hopefully CJ won’t see it missing out of his garage,” chuckled Dan.

This month we bring you a tech story from Biltwell. The last month has been super busy at Scooter Shak and Nate Rogers is swamped with work and working on a killer tech story for next issue.

How to install Biltwell Kung Fu Grips: Putting grips on your motorcycle is pretty easy, we’ll show you how. You’ll need an aftermarket throttle tube and of course, we recommend our billet aluminum Whiskey Throttle tube.

STEP 1: Remove the old grip on the left side of handlebars and clean the throttle tube and the exposed bar end with contact cleaner to remove all grease, glue and other residue. STEP 2: Spray a light coating of aerosol glue into the grip for the left handlebar. The grip for the left handlebar will always have

TECH corner

Page 27: Gasoline Magazine - Issue No.15

No. 27www.gasolinemag.com

a smaller hole than the throttle grip. Super 77 adhesive by 3M works great with Biltwell Kung Fu grips. Drain the overspray into a disposable towel before sliding the grip onto the handlebar. STEP 3: Quickly push and twist the grip firmly onto the handlebar, making sure the inside end butts tightly to the end of the handlebar. Do not beat the grip onto the bar with a hammer. Doing so will turn the bar end into a cookie cutter and puncture the Kung Fu grip end.

STEP 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the throttle side, making sure to use the grip with the larger of the two holes. If the throttle tube on your motorcycle is open-ended, we strongly recommend NOT USING GLUE to install your grips. Glue residue can and will get between your throttle tube and handlebar, resulting in sticky and potentially dangerous throttle performance.

FINISHING UP: Wipe off any glue residue that may have accumulated on the grip flange with a lint-free disposable towel. Do not use strong petroleum-based chemicals like brake cleaner or carb cleaner to clean up after installation, as these fluids can melt the soft rubber material of your new grips.
