words from

Gasolinemagazine

It’s here folks. July. That means the chance of getting snow is finally down to about 30% here in North Dakota. Grilling, boating, fishing, drinking beer and sweating your ass off will take up most of your days. Oh, and motorcycle riding. And who could forget about the Mandan 4th of July parade? That’s where you go to see lots of tractors and horses while your kids scramble around grabbing for candy. Oh how we love this time of year! Here at Gasoline we don’t do much boating or fishing. We do however ride motorcycles and drink as many beers as we can to keep cool. That’s not drink and ride at the same time though, of course. Enough of those beers sometimes stirs up some new ideas around here at Gasoline. We’re already brainstorming some ideas for the 2011 season. A bike build may be in the works here at the shop. You’d be able to follow us as we go and maybe even pick up some how-to tips and whatnot. We’ll have to see what our wallet looks like after this summer is over.

We still have two more issues left to put out this summer though, so we can’t relax yet. At the end of this month we will be tagging along on the ND500 road rally that Gasoline is a major sponsor of. Find out more at www.ND500.com. Look for coverage of that event in an upcoming issue.

Then next month, in August, we’ll be busy covering the goings on in Sturgis, SD. Lots of photos to snap, chicks to look at, and of course more beers to drink. If you see us down at the 70th Annual Sturgis Rally make sure to let us know who you are, we always carry free stuff on us down there. We almost forgot, make sure to go to www.hogwildforacure.com to grab a raffle ticket and WIN that Harley we have. All proceeds going to Cystic Fibrosis.

Time to jump on the bikes and hit the open road. Have a great time in July and hope to see you around the state riding the hell out of your motorcycle and enjoy issue no. 6.

Shogun Energy Drink

We’re always dog tired here at Gasoline. Far too many nights of staying up late playing with our electric train sets and working on the magazine wears us out. That means when we’re not taking naps, we’re living on energy drinks. We recently discovered a new energy drink called Shogun. The thing that’s cool about Shogun is that it’s made close to home, in Brookings, SD. Not only are we keeping our eyes peeled, we’re pumping money into the local economy. Win/win. Check out www.shogunenergy.com. or callMcQuade Distributing to get this into your store locally or your local distributor.

Biltwell Inc.Whether you’re building a custom bike and need some trinkets and doodads to finish it, or you’re just bored and want to check out a cool website, we can

point you in the right direction. Check out what the guys over at Biltwell Inc have got going on. Their website has a bunch off cool parts like handlebars

and exhaust builder kits that’ll help you make your bike cooler than your cousin’s. They also have a pretty neat archive of tech articles that’ll get you one step closer to being a master bike mechanic. www.biltwell.com

OTHER

Say this summer you ride your Harley just a little TOO hard one day and happen to hear some fatal noises coming from the engine. Shit. You tow that sucker home and flip open your dusty repair manual. Connecting rods, compression, valves, huh? This is sounding a little over your head. Close that manual, put down the dollar store tool set, and take it to a pro.

There’s a repair shop right here in Mandan you might not know about. It’s just a small shop, but it houses a BIG amount of knowledge, ability, and history. Earlier this year at the young age of 65, John Wolf opened Wolf’s Complete Cycle Repair. After many years of punching the clock for someone else, he decided it was time to work for no one but himself. So far, he has no regrets.

John’s been working on motorcycles since 1959. If you’re a math whiz, you know that’s 51 years. Since helping repair his first bike, a ’36 Knucklehead he purchased for $150 with a connecting rod poking through the engine, John has done it all. Learning as he went, picking knowledge up from others along the way, and good old trial and error has turned John into nothing short of an expert when it comes to Harley-Davidson repair. H-D is the only brand that John works on at Wolf’s Complete Cycle Repair, due partly to the expense of costly specialty tools needed for each particular brand. Really though, what other brand is there, right?

At first glance, John’s shop may seem small, but one look inside will make it pretty clear he means business. Outfitted with a boring bar, milling machine, turning lathe, and numerous other pieces of specialty

engine building equipment, Wolf’s can take care of any engine work you could possibly need. It’s not just engines though that Wolf’s works on. If it’s a Harley and something’s broke, John, with the help of his son Monty, can fix it at a reasonable rate: $45/hr.

So far business has been going so well that John told us he may have plans to add onto the building, add another lift, and perhaps even raise the ceiling to get the bikes up in the air just a little higher. Jobs are already lining up for this winter including a couple knuckleheads and panheads that need some work.

We encourage you to stop by Wolf’s and check out John’s setup sometime. If you’re lucky, while John’s fixing your bike, you might get to hear some stories as he recalls a lifetime of motorcycling. Maybe of how he started North Dakota’s very first motorcycle club, The Wrecking Crew, in 1959. Or perhaps about one of the 30 some years in a row he attended the Sturgis rally starting in 1960, the times he raced in Daytona, his years as a drag racer, or maybe one of the numerous times him and his buddies messed with the local law enforcement back in his younger years. John Wolf is a walking encyclopedia of motorcycle knowledge and stories. We here at Gasoline are honored to call him a friend of ours.

It took only 90 days for two men in a little motorcycle shop to turn a dream into an award winning bobber – the Brasshopper. Black and gold are the colors of their dream. Where other motorcycles would be chrome, the Brasshopper is a golden polished brass.

“I’ve had the idea for a long time; years,” explained Wes Annable about his dream. Annable owns Patriot Custom Cycle of Dickinson, North Dakota. “I wanted to do something out of copper or brass and black.I’d seen a few bikes with one or two brass pieces on them and it looked cool.”

Annable’s ideas evolved over his motorcycle riding life – 24 years of which were in the Army. When he retired, he settled in Dickinson and opened Patriot Custom Cycle in April, 2009.

He says he knew what he wanted on his dream custom bike: rigid frame, Indian Larry gas tank, jockey shift, one brake

control for front and back, and no visible wiring in true bobber style. “We didn’t

want you to see any of the wires,” he says.

Along with fellow motorcycle mechanic Kevin

Wojahn, the two used slack time in December 2009

to turn the concept into a show piece by March, 2010. “We wanted to have it ready for this

spring’s bike show season,” Annable said.

Weeks of late nights were spent building Brasshopper;

the pair of builders say they never lost their motivation.

“If you’re a motorcyclist, you stay motivated,” said Annable.

“We are lucky we have wives who are understanding. They help our shop be what it is.

I told my wife, Lisa, we had to be done by bike show season in March. We met our goal.”

"Brasshopper"

14 Fuel Your Veins. Gasoline

Wojahn is known in the Dakotas as an active supporter of all things motorcycle, from clubs to events, rides, and rallies; he has built a reputation for being a smart motorcycle mechanic. What many people don’t know though is his talent on a metal lathe and mill. His fabrication skills are evident all over the Brasshopper. From the turn signals to the front fender, he fabricated nearly all the pieces in Annable’s shop .

Wojahn came up with the idea for the brass barrels that house the turn signals. “It took me about 5 minutes to come up with the idea and drill it out so the LED light would fit, and then lathe the cuts in to it,” he said.

“I’d say one of the biggest challenges was fabricating the speedo and filler neck into the gas tank,” Wojahn said. Using a 3 ½ gallon Indian Larry tank, the pair designed the speedometer to fit neatly into the tank. It sits in a hollow tube where the speedo wires run up from the bottom of the tank. The challenge was to make sure there were no leaks in the tube at either the bottom, or the top where the gage is set

Annable also wanted to modify the tank neck, to accommodate the brass gas cap. That too, required tight attention to be certain it did not leak.

15www.gasolinemag.com

Annable said, “In the mock-up stage, we shot from the hip a lot. This would go here, this there. A lot of things got changed as we went.”

Since he had in mind what he wanted to achieve, Annable worked with Wojahn through each stage to incorporate, modify, and fabricate his ideas. “We started with the main body pieces,” Annable said. “The Paughco frame was the start. The forks, the fender, and the wheels were all the first stage. Then came the powertrain.”

Brasshopper is powered by a stock Harley-Davidson 80 ci Evolution engine. It’s not yet been put on the Patriot Custom Cycle dyno, but Annable says he's sure the estimated 62 horses and the Ultima 6-speed transmission will send Brasshopper to the front of the... pack.

After the 2010 bike show season, Annable says you’ll see Brasshopper at the rides and rallies around the upper

Midwest. It’s for sale, but after the ride captured in these photos for Gasoline Magazine, he said he is reluctant to sell. “I dunno. I don’t want to sell it. I may sell one of my other bikes before I sell this one. It’s sweet!”

LIVE TO RIDEGasoline Magazine meets up with North Dakota Motorycl Riding Groups and Motorcycle Clubs

By Dan Geiger Photography by Chad Hatzenbuhler

Here we are, back for our next installment in the motorcycle clubs of North Dakota series. This month we are featuring another pretty recognizable motorcycle club around this area: The Freedom Riders MC.

Unless you live under a rock, you've probably heard of the annual Freedom Riders bike show held in Bismarck, an event which the club puts on every year. So that means you already know something about the club without even realizing it. We'd like to give you the chance to learn a little more about the Freedom Riders MC though, and what better way to do that than with a good ol' Q&A session, right kids? Right. To get some answers to our questions we turned to the president of the Freedom Riders, Damian. He was more than willing to answer some of our questions and give us a little insight into the Freedom Riders MC.

LIVE TO RIDEGasoline Magazine meets up with North Dakota Motorycl Riding Groups and Motorcycle Clubs

By Dan Geiger Photography by Chad Hatzenbuhler

Gasoline: History of the Club? Freedom Riders: The Freedom Riders Motorcycle Club has been in existence for 33 years. It was originally formed as a back up support for ABATE and for a bunch of men to enjoy life on their bikes and as a family. Date the Club Started? 1976

Who Started the Club? There were about 15 men that started the Freedom Riders, we currently have 3 charter members that are still active in the club: Popeye, Cash and Gentle Ben.

How Many Members? We currently have 40 members and 1 prospect.

What does it take to be a member? Join in on any of the rides that the club hosts and...

26 Fuel Your Veins. Gasoline

hang around the club. One thing that we always stress is that we are looking for quality and not quantity, we want to have men in the club that have heart and will stand by their brothers through thick and thin.

How Many Chapters? We are the only chapter with our patch, there are many Freedom Riders clubs around the world but we are not affiliated with any other club

Idols of Brotherhood? The idols that we have in our club would be each other and the men who started this prideful club.

What does the Club mean to it's members? The club stands for unity, respect, and also devotion to family and friends.

Any Traditions? We have many traditions but none that I can share. Charities, why and what do you do for them? During the annual Freedom Riders bike show we have an auction that raises money for the Disabled American Vets, all the proceeds stay in our community. Over the last 4 years we have donated 60,000 to the DAV. We also have a run called Jan’s run. Jan was the wife of our club brother (Fridge) who passed away from cancer and every year we remember her by having a run to raise money for a

person in the community or a friend of the club who has been stricken by this horrible disease.

How do you help the community? The club is very giving when we can be, most of the time we find that the giving of our time can be more helpful and rewarding than giving money to an organization, the club has been involved with benefit breakfasts where we cook. We have also been involved in funerals of fallen friends and family or citizens of the general public who believed in the cause. We have stood tall with the American flag flying when our military men and women come home.

How did your club get their Patch? History Behind it? What does it mean to you? What do the colors mean? The patch was created 34 years ago and has never been altered; it stands for riding free down the road with the wind all around you. The colors yellow and black are a strong tradition for the Freedom Riders and always will be.

27www.gasolinemag.com

28 Fuel Your Veins. Gasoline

What is your biggest motorcycle run? The biggest run we have is the Pre-Sturgis run, it is always held on the last Saturday of July, hence the name. We average from 100 to 200 riders depending on the weather.

Any tips for riders out there? I have many tips for the new riders on the road, always be aware of your surroundings, even though you have a green light and the right of way, the cars around you do not see you and you always have to be prepared for them to do something stupid. Don’t hot shot around town, we are no longer in the day and age where it is ok to rap your pipes around town, cops are cracking down on this quick. We ride in a helmet free state and to keep it that way we all have to take responsibility for how we ride and be sensible.

Why be in a motorcycle club? Great Question, if your heart is telling you that you want to ride and you want to be a part of something special, take a look around and see what club is the best fit for you, where your heart leads you is who you should hang around and be a part of. One statement that I want to make is that before you get the idea in your head to start your own club, take a look around, there are plenty of clubs in this state (almost to many) that are great clubs to be a part of, it is hard to get respect from the clubs that have been around this state for years when it has not been earned. To just throw a patch on your back is not going to earn you respect. Take the time to find out about the clubs in your area along with their traditions and brotherhood, trust me prospecting is not the end of the world and I have found that some of my best memories are from when I prospected.

With the 3rd season of the hit TV SHOW Sons of Anarchy, what are your thoughts about the show? I like the show but it is not realistic for our part of the world in ND.

Any requirements to be in the club? You must be 21 years old and you must own and ride a motorcycle and it does not have to be a Harley. Most important is you must have heart.

Do you believe the stereotype that is put on Motorcycle Clubs? (ex. Outlaws, Bad People, Killers, etc.) Of course not, those times have changed, you see some of the toughest sons of a bitches around helping people every day, giving toys to kids, helping the elderly and donating their time. Now does that mean you should walk up to a biker and mess with him and give him a bad time? Word to the wise, only if you want the crap kicked out of you.

Oldest member of the club? I believe it is 60.

Goals in the future? Our goals are to some day build a bigger club house.

Youngest member of the club? We have two that are 30 years old.

Any Stories on the road? So many stories of the road but as the saying goes: what happens on the road stays on the road.

PRE STURGIS ROUTESBy Scooter Pursley Photography By Dan Geiger, Chad Hatzenbuhler and Scooter Pursley Part of the fun of going to the Black Hills Rally in Sturgis is getting there. It’s stopping in Belfield, Bowman or Flasher in North Dakota or Lemmon, S.D., to stretch the legs; it’s the sculptures along the Enchanted Highway between Gladstone, N.D. and Regent; it’s pulling off for a snack in tiny Reva, S.D. just because it’s there, whether you need gas or not; it’s the rugged look of the Custer National Forest between Newell, S.D. and Reva; it’s Castle Rock Butte, White Butte, Rainy Butte and Bear Butte. Some prefer to load a bike into the trailer and unload at the motel on arrival in the Hills. There’s nothing wrong with that, if that’s how you roll. After all, Sturgis is as much about being there as getting there. Personally, I prefer to chase the sun from Bismarck to Sturgis on the bike, getting a feel for the real road trip, then dragging butt back home a few days later. When you point the bike west, you don’t know what you might run into. There’s excitement to that unknown. But it’s safe to say at some point you will see deer, antelope (lots in South Dakota), bugs on the windshield (especially in North Dakota) and thunderstorm (daily somewhere in the Hills). You might feel like you’ve been through the ringer when you cover the 300 or so miles

33www.gasolinemag.com

between Bismarck-Mandan and Sturgis. But that will help you sleep better – if you plan to sleep – when you get to Sturgis. So what’s the best route to take between central North Dakota and the Black Hills in early August? There is no right answer, of course. Most highways are in great condition and it seems like construction projects in western South Dakota go on hiatus during the rally. Traffic is light and it’s a straight shot to Belle Fourche, Bear Butte, Sturgis and Newell. SOME ROUTES TO CONSIDER WIDE OPEN ROUTE...

Since everyone obeys the speed limit (right?), this might be the quickest route with 120 miles of interstate from Bismarck to Belfield. Highway 85 from Belfield through Bowman takes riders past White Butte, the highest point in North Dakota and through some wide open country. You can stay on 85 into Belle Fourche and Spearfish, or take a “shortcut” as it’s called to Newell. About 60 miles after crossing the state line, you come to 168, about a five-mile jaunt to Highway 79 down to Newell. I recommend stopping near the high point at Castle Rock Butte and looking around you in every direction to get a feel of what being alone is really about. You will feel alone. Because you are alone.

34 Fuel Your Veins. Gasoline

Taking this route through Newell will bring you into Sturgis past Bear Butte, Broken Spoke Saloon, Full Throttle Saloon and into Sturgis from the east. Staying on 85 through Belle Fourche brings you in from the west. ENCHANTED HIGHWAY ROUTE... Consider this route if you’re just taking in sights between here and there. Get off I-94 at Gladstone (Exit 72 at Geese in Flight). For the next 30 miles, you’ll come across large metal sculptures and wind up in Regent, where designer Gary Greff is planning to build the world’s largest motorcycle. Greff will be in Sturgis raffling off a Harley-Davidson Deuce to raise money for the project. From Regent, take highways 21 to 22, south past Reeder into South Dakota where it becomes 79. Next stop: Reva. I don’t really know if there ever once was anything more in Reva, but there’s not much there now. A house, a store and, most importantly for bikers, gas in the middle of nowhere – providing you get there at a reasonable time. The store there is very accommodating to bikers. It is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. (or later if traffic is heavy) during rally week. Normally, it’s open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. It’s a nice place to take a break before your last stretch into the Hills. The ride from Reva to Newell is two parts; the first 10 to 15 miles south through beautiful country that looks out of place. Sweeping turns through evergreen-covered hills give way to the vast open prairie for the last 50 miles into Newell and Sturgis. THE 180 TO 200 ROUTE... This route is about 180 miles to the point where it hooks up with South Dakota Highway 200 in Faith, then take your choice of the final leg into Sturgis. Head south on Highway 6 out of Mandan and along Highway 21 to New Leipzig. Hop on ND 49 to South Dakota and over to Lemmon, where you have to go downtown to see these funky Petrified Wood Park and its weird designs. From there, it’s a straight shot down SD 73 to Faith, where you’ll have two options for your final run into Sturgis. Option one is to take SD 200 west, again into Newell. Option two is to stay on 73 south to Howes corner and into Sturgis on SD 34. This is the more scenic of the two routes and brings you into Sturgis past Buffalo Chip Campground and Full Throttle Saloon. You can’t go wrong with whatever route you choose to take to the rally. Plan ahead for fuel stops and breaks and you’ll have the ride of your life. We will see you down there in a few weeks and pick up issue no. 7 before you head down or grab one at many locations in Sturgis, SD and along the way.
