LIONEL DELUYinterview by : carLotta buoSi

Lionel Deluy, a french fashion photographer tends to shoots less fashion today but not by choice, he still really loves it and understands it. instinctive and fast, taking the camera off Lionel would be like cutting a piece of him away , as he lives and breaths with his camera. He was born and grew up in a very small village in the South of france. now based in La, he believes in bringing out everyones’ inner beauty with his photography and he still dreams about his ideal fashion sho ot because despite having achieved his goals, he still wants to grow and see what life brings him. Life can be unexpected, like when he landed in L.a. on his way to brazil and never left. as he would say: c’eSt La vie!

How did Lionel Deluy became Lionel Deluy?the way to become a photographer is to be an assistant. i started in a studio in Paris that gathered quite a few important photographers. everyone was there, it was the right place to be as you could meet the right people. after nine years in Paris and after getting my first publications i decided to leave Paris for Mexico and that was the best experience ever:

after that what happened?i worked a lot while i was in Mexico, i did the first three covers of Harper’s bazar then they opened and i also worked for elle, vogue, but then it became dangerous and i decided to leave again. i was going to brazil but the plane landed in La, where i was going to see a friend. now it has been twenty years since i came, i never to ok that flight for San Paulo.

at the beginning there was nothing for fashion here, everything was in Paris or Milano, but then ten years ago magazines started not to have models on the cover anymore but celebrities.

you’ve been photographing many of them such as nicole kidman, Dita von tees, Hugh Hepfner: what is in your opinion the difference between a celebrity and a model when you photograph them?Sure it is a really different approach but in the end it’s photography.” and i love to photograph Model and celebrity.. a celebrity on the other hand is someone who has more power on their shoulders, someone who is usually smart because making it in Hollywo od is difficult. also, when you sho ot a celebrity is very different from a model: you have the manager and Prs and agents behind you telling you what you can and cannot do, if you are not a strong photographer you cannot do anything.

if you have an established name as a photographer it is easier as they trust you more, but at the beginning it was a fight every time.

would you define yourself a fashion photographer?i am a fashion photographer who doesn’t sho ot fashion anymore (laugh). but my way is really fashion, because i do understand it: clothes, hair, make up are my element.

So, between two girls: one extremely beautiful but plain and another one less gorgeous but more interesting, which one would you cho ose?i would go for the beautiful one (laugh)! i don’t care if she is stupid, but if it was a go od casting in Paris or Milan, then i would defiantly bo ok the interesting beautiful one. if it was just between two girls i would go for the stupid one because i know doing so i would have a nice picture. at the end of the day it’s all about the picture and if something goes wrong they are not going to give the girl the fault: it’s always the photographer’s fault.

in your fashion images there’s always a lot of space left to the landscape. How do you cho ose these settings? i sho ot really fast, the composition of my images just comes: i see a place i like, i sho ot there and i’m not lo oking far into planning, i’m much more instinctive.

there’s many places that have inspired me, my dream would be to rent a bus, have two girls and my team with me and just drive for a week around uSa, go to the desert, in utah and photograph. i would call this the road trip.

Let’s talk about your portraits: many of them, especially the ones of celebrities, appear very natural, almost as you shot a moment in between two poses. Do you aim to make the personality of the people you sho ot shine through your photographs?i love to do portraits of celebrities. what i usually do is putting two seats at the same height and sit very close to them, lo oking at them in the eyes. there needs to be a communication, you need to grab something from inside, something real. i speak with them and while i speak i sho ot: every person has a beauty inside and that’s what i try to portray.
