Please help us by getting your dues in on time. It’s your member- ship, Patron and Corporate dues that keep the society alive. For those who have already sent in their memberships, your cards will be in the mail in the next week. We are grateful for your ongoing support of GDJS and hope that you’ll come often to support live jazz, not only at Shield’s but the many venues that we promote. We are constantly amazed at the live jazz events going on that are never advertised in news- papers. We were recently told that we’re the best “clearinghouse” for jazz events in the area. Whatever we are to you, hopefully we help you find the type of jazz you enjoy. We must once again thank our tremendous volunteers, not room for you here, but without you we would be nothing. Battle of the Big Bands Coming to The Crystal Ballroom The Gary Green-felder Orchestra and The Rhythm Society Orchestra are having a BATTLE OF THE BIG BANDS on Saturday, March 5, 2016. This will be held in the gorgeous Crystal Ballroom in the Masonic Temple in Detroit. The winner of the event is determined by applause! Vocalist Paul King and the Rhythm Society Orchestra from De-troit specialize in swing from the mid-1930s through late 1940s. Its sound is influenced by Count Basie and Harry James and has covered the top swing venues throughout the Midwest. The band has been nominated for Detroit Music Awards including Best Big Band/Swing Artists, Outstanding Jazz Vocalist and Outstanding Jazz Instrumentalists. The Gary Greenfelder Orchestra is a well-respected powerhouse swing band that plays a wide array of hits from the 20s to the pres-ent day. Many of its musicians are among the best in the area and

they’ve played a countless number of top venues and events. Dancers of all skill levels are wel-come. Many come just to enjoy the sights and sounds. Dress is semi-formal or vintage attire. General admission begins at 6:30 p.m. with a dance lesson from 7 to 8 p.m. The band will hit the stage at 8:15 p.m. and perform until midnight. There is a cash bar available throughout the evening. Dress is snappy casual to semi-formal; or vintage attire. Tickets are $25 per person in ad-vance or at the door. Add $5 for the optional lesson. Tables of eight may

be reserved in advance at no additional charge. Parking (usually $10/vehicle) is available:

These events pull dancers and non-dancers from all ages together for an incredible evening of music and dance. If you don’t know how to dance, come join the many who do not but love to soak in the sights and sounds of an unforgettable evening. The previous swing dances have brought more than 12,000 people together! Don’t miss this one! n

Kate Patterson – Live and Uncut Vocalist Kate Patterson has a new CD out of an older, but great record-ing, “Live and Uncut.” Recorded live in 2003 on the WDET Ed Love Show, the CD features Kate on vocals, Johnny Trudell on trumpet, Don Mayberry on bass and Chuck Shermetaro on piano. The CD is avail-able through Kate’s concerts, and her husband, James Frederick, JAKA Pro-ductions, P.O. Box 18113 River Rouge Station, Detroit, MI 48218-0113. George “Sax” Benson & Glenn Tucker – Dreamers

This new release, a unique collaboration with George ‘Sax’ Benson on alto and tenor saxophone and Glenn Tucker on piano fea-tures all songs composed by George Benson. It’s George’s first release in over 15 years but the tunes on “Dreamers” date from the 1950s to the present and showcase Benson’s range from blues and swing roots to his more modern jazz compositions, supported by Glenn’s sensitive accompaniments.
