Elks (continued)

On September 26th, the Plymouth Ann Arbor Elks Lodge 325 will be featuring one of Sean’s Rising Stars, vibraphonist Peyton Miller! Who is Peyton Miller? Peyton comes from a different background than many of the other Rising Stars who join him in jam sessions and music classes. Eighteen-year-old Peyton lives in Rochester, Michigan and is home schooled, go-ing into his senior year. When he was asked how he got started in music, he said that he learned piano at 6-years-old and was being trained classically. He kept feeling there was more to learn and he wanted to expand his talents so he turned to drums. At twelve he attended a Percussion Clinic at Oakland University where he met Sean Dobbins. He learned quickly that he wanted to pursue jazz and to push himself to learn more and aspire to be the very best that he could be. He says that Sean is like a second father to him.

People who have heard Peyton Miller play are blown away by his performance. His email address is “stickmanfrenzy” and that is an apt moniker for him. His energy, exuberance, and originality are better than most famous vibraphonists. He seems much more seasoned and mature than his 18 years. So please come out and see Peyton Miller, along with Sean Dobbins on drums, Corey Kendrick on keys, and Jeff Pedraz on bass.

Jazz @ The Elks program was started in 2010 by Elk Byron Taylor who was retired from his positions at the Detroit Federation of Musicians. His love for jazz and his desire to help out the Elks financially sparked the program. With his many contacts from the union and with the help of Paul Hunt and Johnny Trudell, he planted the seed and now in its eighth year, audiences have enjoyed all periods of jazz for all tastes. Byron passed away in September 2011 and the Elks is proud to carry on the great program Byron started. The entertainment at the Elks has added another venue called Blues @ The Elks which has also become very successful. Jazz@The Elks happens on the last Tuesday of the month from 7-9:30 p.m. There is a $10 donation at the door which includes hors d’oeuvres. Blues@The Elks happens on the second Tuesday of the month in partnership with the Detroit Blues Society (www.DetroitBluesSociety.org). Time is 7-10 p.m. There is a $5 donation at the door and bring your dancing shoes.

GDJS Makes Donation To “Best Friends” Animal Rescue following Hurricane Harvey

At our last Jazz at Shield’s concert, fans of Girl Power do-nated $450 which has been sent to the “Best Friends” Animal Society for rescuing companion animals in need as a result of Hurricane Harvey. For over 30 years, Best Friends has been run-ning the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary, and building effective programs that reduce the number of animals entering shelters. They have been instrumental in the aftermath of the hurricane in assisting local shelter pets to be moved to northern areas to ensure that Texas and Louisiana pets had more room. THANK YOU to our GDJS members for your generosity in helping pre-cious pets that so desperately in need of help at this time. You are the best! n
