Mardi Gras 2014 It was another splendid Mardi Gras party at the beautiful Concorde Inn Forestré Banquet Center in Rochester Hills. Over 150 enthusiastic party goers celebrated what was undoubtedly the earliest Mardi Gras celebration in the area. The Cakewalkin’ Jass Band of Toledo, featuring Nicole Heitger on vocals played hot jazz and a second line beat for the dancers, and a gourmet New Orleans buffet completed the day.

Again, the volunteers do it all! Many thanks to Rosemary Newton for managing ticket sales, and volunteers Pat Elliott, Ricki Atkinson, Jay Cornett, Carmen Meyers, Suzanna Kain, JoAnn Carlson, Mary Panicacci, Don Goss and of course, Emily Laura. Also thanks to Steve Stolaruk, owner of the venue for donating the use of this beautiful facility. Manager Erin Danis and her staff did an outstanding job of making us feel welcome. We will be back next year, of course. n

GDJS Again Sponsors “Prohibition and All That Jazz” If you missed our luxury coach tour of Detroit Prohibition and All That Jazz, it was so much fun that we’re doing it again. Save the date – Thursday, June 19. The tour will be guided by Linda Yellin of Feet On the Street Tours (www.EnjoyTheD.com). We’ll meet for dinner at 4:30 p.m. at Shield’s of Southfield. Following that, we’ll board our coach for a tour of some of Detroit’s historic jazz sites. Our last trip stopped at the Carr Center for a tour of their facility and learned about their fine Jazz at the Cen-ter concert series. Learn about Detroit’s role in Prohibition, fun facts and stories, visit sites along the River and a former speakeasy. Hear about the Purple Gang and visit important music sites in Detroit. We’ll finish the evening at Bert’s Market Place where Bill Meyer hosts his famous Open Mic Nite with Bill on piano, Gayelynn McKinney on drums and Ralphe Armstrong on bass (approximately 8-11 p.m.). Musicians are invited to bring your instruments. The coach will then return us to Shield’s in Southfield. We’ll provide more information closer to the event. The price of the tour will be $50, plus your dinner at Shield’s and drinks at Bert’s. Shield’s of Southfield, an avid supporter of the GDJS, is also a partner in this event. Your reservation on the tour will include a reservation at Shield’s. We had a waiting list last time so if you are interested, please call our event director, Rosemary Newton, at 248-594-1211 to ensure your place. You can pay your money closer to the date. n

Thinking of You Several GDJS friends and members are going through medical

issues, surgery or treatment of some kind as well. Let’s keep them all in our thoughts and prayers, and send wishes for a speedy recovery: Chuck Moss; Bill Hart; Gabby and Helen Rossolino’s son Gary; Jim Wyse and Kurt Beguhn. Speedy recover to volunteer Carmen Meyers who fell while shoveling her neighbor’s walk and required shoulder and arm surgery. Every healthy day is a blessing!!! n

We are growing, and growing and we hope you have noticed. I would like to thank you for your patience – not many of you complained that there was not a January/February newsletter this year. Those of you who receive the weekly (sometimes daily) jazz-o-grams via e-mail have the best and most up-to-date info available. But our energy has been focused on getting a new web site up and running and there were only so many hours to go around.

The site, which will be up soon, will contain the mission statement and description of the society, schedule of events, Shield’s concert information, GDJS board and volunteer contact page, newsletter archive, information about all of our events (Mardi Gras, annual picnic, Prohibion and All That Jazz), our membership form, information about GDJS “officially-sponsored events” which now include the Terrace Inn Jazz Weekend, the Rec’ Bowl Jazz Series in Mt. Clemens and new this year, the Oakland Literacy Project con-certs. There will be lots of photos, and a “links” page to local and regional jazz clubs, venues, musicians, jazz radio stations, etc. The site will be up soon at www.GreaterDetroitJazzSociety.com It’s long overdue, and will bring a much-needed avenue of communication to our organization.

You might notice the tag line for our logo has expanded to include “Big Band” – it now reads “Dedicated to Promoting Classic Jazz, Big Band, Dixieland and Swing.” We have added this because we do promote many big bands, and realized that we CAN fit a big band into Shield’s (although there were a couple of patrons who thought it was too much, but most thought it fun and exciting). Scott Gwinnell’s Jazz Orchestra, an outstanding big band featuring Paul King on vocals was warmly received, and coming up we have the TnT Big Band featuring vocalist Renee King Jackson. This band played Shield’s on a non-GDJS Saturday and we were asked to hire the band to play for us. The band, formerly known as the Bob Hopkins Band, was the first big band to play at Baker’s for 4-1/2 years. Led by Tony DiMaria and Ted Smith, the band will feature tunes from the Great American Songbook. We hope you’ll join us.

The Big Band name addition also reflects the bigger bands hired by our sponsors such as the Millionaires, Planet D Nonet, Johnny Trudell Big Band and the Gary Greenfelder Orchestra (GGO) schedule to play this summer at the Rec’ Bowl.

Our full-house December 21 concert featuring Metro Jazz Voices – De-troit’s premier 4-part harmony vocal group was a success, both musically and in keeping with the holiday spirit. Not only were we serenaded with jazz and holiday music but our fundraiser for Lighthouse of Oakland County was successful as well. Thanks to your generosity, we made a cash donation in the amount of $200 and a large box containing a combination of 122 new hats, gloves, scarves, socks, a jacket, a friendship bracelet kit and candy. It was warmly received by the Lighthouse organization and we are so proud of you for participating. Thank you!

A final word about dues! This is our fifth year of the same dues policy and it is clearly explained on the dues form. All dues are payable by the end of January each year, unless you joined in the last quarter for the full amount in which case you are good through the end of 2014. If you joined at the picnic for half price, or paid your money before October 2013, your full dues are again payable. If you paid late last year (and many did) it doesn’t count. We are adopting the policy of other jazz clubs and will need to drop members not paying their dues by the end of March 2013. It’s very expen-sive for us to continue to mail to non-paying members, and we hope you’ll understand. MANY thanks to those who have already sent in their dues, and to our many new and existing Patrons without whose support we could not continue. n
