Help With Jazz

The Greater Detroit Jazz Society promotes jazz education for students of all ages! We are proud to promote a workshop developed by Scott Gwinnell – award-winning pianist, composer, lecturer, instructor of jazz piano and director of the Oakland University Jazz Singers, director of Vo-cal Jazz Education at the Music Hall, and director of the Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra. The week-long, 9th annual Metro-Detroit Jazz Workshop is a fun, educational way to spend a week celebrating jazz and exploring your creativity. Located at the midtown Michigan St. U Detroit Bldg, 10am-5pm, MDJW is for beginners to advanced students of every age and every instrument (including vocalists). Instructed by top college jazz studies instructors and musicians, students choose classes and clinics accord-ing to their taste and level, and play in combos which will perform for family and friends at the end of the week at Detroit’s famous Cliff Bells Jazz Club. It is only $50 to save your spot, and tuition isn’t due until the workshop on July 10-14. Enrolling only takes minutes on the website at www.helpwithjazz.com. n

Bells as a labor of love. They are dedicated to playing great music and of late, focused on the works of recently-deceased jazz piano virtuoso, Mulgrew Miller. Leader Scott Gwinnell has been writing arrangements based on his music for the last 6 months, and wants to record it to present to you. They need your help to make it happen. Recording costs are very expensive for 17 musicians and it has been 10 years since their last record. Vocalist Emma Aboukasm will join the orchestra at Shield’s and perform on the recording also.

Although Shield’s jazz is normally held on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month, this is not a part of the “Jazz at Shield’s” concert series. We hope you can come out to hear a preview of some of the music that they will record, and contribute a few dollars to support making this record. Please support the arts in Detroit and all of the great jazz musicians who bring music to you. Thank you for your support. n
