To mark their arrival the Institute of Engineering and Technology came into school to run the Faraday Microchip Challenge for a number of our Year 7 students who were joined by a group from The Beacon School. Their task was to invent a device which could improve people’s lives, with coding as its central function. Their inventions ranged from a sensor for epileptics, a tracker to locate a pet cat, a device which would alert homeowners to potential fire risks and a temperature sensor to alert sunbathers to damage to their skin. It was a pleasure to attend their pitches to the IET facilitator who commented on how innovative and focused the students were. We also lose Mrs MacLean who is our Head of Psychology and Deputy Head of Sixth Form and Mrs Thompson, who has contributed to all aspects of our administrative team for the last 10 years. We wish all our departing colleagues very well for the future and thank them for all they have contributed to Rosebery. Thank you for all your support over the last half term. Have a very good week. Dear Parent/Carer

Re: Peer Learning Pilot Scheme

Rosebery School is offering a new scheme, led by Sixth Form students, who would like to support

some of our younger students with their school work or past exam papers in a variety of

curriculum core subjects. In return, the Sixth Formers will gain valuable work experience,

employability skills and evidence, which they can then use when writing their UCAS Personal

Statements. Sessions will take place in school at the end of the day from 3.15pm – 4.15pm.

There will be a small charge to register for access to the Peer Learning Scheme and for

administration. Once registered, Rosebery will match an appropriate Sixth Former to your child

and you will be allowed access to her school email to make appointments. Due to data

protection, no personal details will be shared.

If you would like your child to benefit from this scheme, please contact me at the email address

below. We will then register you and prepare a contract to confirm your agreement to your

child’s enrolment on the scheme.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Y7-10 English Exams Summer 2016

Year Date Details Recommended revision resources/activities

7 w/c 20th June Students will write an analytical essay focused on a piece of literary non-fiction. Assessed for Reading and Writing

Students will be allowed to bring a planning sheet into the exam so this must be fully completed. It may also be helpful for students to read some additional non-fiction for practice, such as newspaper articles.

8 w/c 13th June Students will be tested in both Reading and Writing. Although the test references Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, it does not rely on students’ knowledge of the Tales.

Students should already be reading for pleasure but this should be increased either in terms of frequency or by the selection of more challenging texts. Students may also benefit from reading non-fiction texts in which writers present a particular point of view, such as in a newspaper editorial piece.

9 w/c 27th June Students will write an analytical essay comparing two poems from WWI: a `named poem’ and another of their choice. This test replicates the format of GCSE Literature paper 2: students will be given a copy of the named poem but must select and refer to a second poem from memory. Assessed for Reading and Writing.

Students will be expected to reference the poetry that they have studied and should revise both key quotations and context. Wider reading of any conflict poetry could also be used to extend their responses.

10 Date tbc but likely to be w/c 27th June

Students will complete the majority of a Lit paper 2: poetry anthology and `An Inspector Calls’.

Students have studied both texts and should undertake exam revision using resources such as Litcharts or BBC Bitesize. To assist students with their preparation of `An Inspector Calls’, they are encouraged to focus their revision on two specific topics: Sheila Birling and the theme of Responsibility.

Year 9 Trip to a local Care Home

Students in 9RX ventured out of school on

Wednesday 18 May to meet the residents at

Epsom Lodge Care Home. The girls spent

the afternoon at the home, sharing an

insight into life at Rosebery and, in return,

hearing everything from stories about the

Second World War, to the trick to

maintaining a fifty-year marriage (and

counting!).

Many thanks go to Charlotte Middleton and

her family for welcoming the girls so

warmly. 9RX are already planning when

they might return the favour, by inviting the

residents to Rosebery for coffee – and more

stories!

I am very proud of the students who

behaved impeccably.

Mr Styles

Rosebery Gymnast Tipped for Top!

The PE Department are very proud of

Sophie Scott (pictured) as she made

the papers last week. Sophie is

tipped to be a top British gymnast

and her recent success at the Artistic

British Gymnastics Championships,

where she took the Gold medal, has

put her firmly on track for the

Olympic squad!

Congratulations Sophie, Mrs South

Rosebery Summer Jazz Concert 2016

The annual Summer Jazz Concert took place on Saturday 14 May in the School canteen. It featured Big Band, the Brass

Ensemble, Broadway Band and Rosebery Singers, as well as the Aberdour School Band, who also played with the Big

Band for the third year.

The evening featured many pieces by the Big Band, including Forget You, I Want You Back, and Uptown Funk. Tillie

Yorke played I Will Always Love You on the saxophone and there were first performances of GCSE blues compositions

by Alice Mills and Ruby Waters.

The Rosebery Singers performed Puttin on the Ritz, Blackbird and Fly Me To the Moon, The Octet Crazy Little Thing

and Reet Petite, the Saxophone Quartet played the theme from the Pink Panther and the new Trombone Quartet

played I’ve Got Rhythm.

Thanks to Mr Eaglestone for preparing the brass groups, to Mr Musser for accompanying the Rosebery Singers,

Mrs Dilnot, who accompanied Big Band, and, of course, special thanks to Mr Valenti for organising the evening, and

directing Big Band, Broadway Band, Octet and Saxophone Quartet.

Congratulations to Anna Williamson, who was awarded the cup for Jazz Musician of the Year 2016.

Careers – ‘What’s My Line’? Are there any more parents out there who would like to take part in a Year 10 ‘What’s My Line’ careers activity on the morning of Tuesday 12 July 2016 in school between 9am - midday? So far we have a Nurse, Beautician and two Engineers. Parents willing to take part will be asked to bring in three props or tools of your trade to prompt the students to ask a series of questions to try and guess your job. Parents can award points to students who ask the best questions or who make the fastest or most accurate guess, which would give the activity a competitive edge. In the past, this has been a fun and engaging careers event which allows students to learn about a range of different career options in an informative way and also to build the students’ confidence and communication skills by asking questions. If any parent would like to take part, please email Mrs Keaveney - [email protected].

Atkins will be running an IET Open House Event for students, parents and teachers. The purpose of the event is to provide a brief insight in the world of engineers and environmental scientists. They will aim to answer questions on how they got into their careers and what they do on a daily basis.

The event will be held at: Woodcote Grove, Epsom (5 – 6 pm, with arrival refreshments from 4.30 pm) on Friday 29 July 2016.

The event is free of charge, however spaces are limited and will need to be booked. These are available at: http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/iet-open-house-2016-atkins-epsom-tickets-25597663300
