4 November 2016 Messages from the Headteacher Dear Parent/Carers Welcome back - It has been an excellent start to the new half term beginning with school masses on Tuesday for All Saints Day. Fr Pat reminded us in his sermon about what great heroes the saints are for us all and how we should continue to be inspired by their example of service and sacrifice. This week it has also been a real pleasure to attend many of the year group celebration assemblies that have recognised the achievements of students in the first half term. Well done to all those students who achieved awards and I hope that many more students will be recognised for outstanding efforts in all areas of school life at the end of this half term. On Wednesday afternoon I attended a meeting for all the secondary catholic Headteachers in the Diocese at Newman University. At the meeting three of our Year 12 students, Lily White (12CHG), Ellie Douglas(12THN) and Niamh Kinsel- la (12THN) gave an excellent presentation about the leadership programme they had completed during half term at Alton Castle. A full report will be in the newsletter next week. On Thursday we were delighted to welcome Year 10 and 11 students from other local Catholic schools to participate in the Key Stage 4 Mathematics Challenge. As expected there was an incredibly high standard of competition with 8 teams competing from St Thomas Aquinas, St Peter’s, St Pauls' Girls, Holy Trinity, Cardinal Wiseman, Cardinal Newman and Bishop Walsh. Unfortunately we didn’t win on this occasion but well done to all the students who participated and many thanks to Mr Owen who organised the event. Following the success of the High Altitude Weather Balloon that students from Science Club launched last term the students were invited to the Schools Space Science Conference in York by the UK Space Agency. On Friday Mr Tomlin and Mr Bowen took six students to the conference where they had the amazing opportunity to discuss their Weather Balloon with the astronaut Mr Tim Peake. Coventry Peace Festival 2016

Introduction from the Lord Mayor of Coventry

What a wonderful reason for a city to come together and celebrate. I can’t think of a more worthy cause.

In Coventry we are very proud to be a multicultural city where people of all faiths and backgrounds live together

happily as one community. And we are known around the world as a symbol of peace and reconciliation, working

to bring countries together, end conflict and foster forgiveness. It is a message we have been spreading since the

Second World War – just hours after our city was devastated in the Blitz.

Unfortunately, it is work that is needed as much today as it was 76 years ago and Coventry has a vital role to

play. Already this year we have welcomed Terry Waite to our city for the first Coventry Peace Day and stood in

unity with the people of Japan on Hiroshima Day. In November we host our second RISING Global Peace Forum, where leading figures from across

the world and those who have suffered through war and violence will come together in an event inspired and supported by Archbishop Desmond

Tutu. We have opened our doors to Syrian refugees and invited them to make their new home in our city and people from countries around the

world have visited our magnificent Cathedral and Cathedral Ruins to pray for a more peaceful world.

The Coventry Peace Festival is a wonderful event and goes from strength to strength. This year, once again, we have a varied programme of events,

exhibitions and concerts, including Michael Morpurgo OBE, the author of War Horse and many other best-sellers, speaking at the Lord Mayor’s

Annual Peace Lecture in St Mary’s Guildhall. The Peace Walk promises to be as popular as ever and our St Michael’s Singers will be presenting “The

Armed Man – A Mass for Peace” in Coventry Cathedral.

There are too many events to mention them all but I would like to thank all those who have played a part in helping to stage such a wonderful

festival. I look forward to attending as many events as possible and I would urge everyone to do the same.

Best wishes,

Cllr Lindsley Harvard

Lord Mayor of the City of Coventry

Shoe Box Appeal 2016 - Final Reminder

Last year we had a very successful Shoe Box Appeal with winning tutor groups collecting 16 and the school overall

collecting 188 boxes. This year we would love to beat it! The Shoe Box Appeal sends shoe boxes filled with gifts to

children in countries who have suffered extreme poverty or war. This could be the only gift they get in their lives.

This year we want to make it bigger and better. Our aim is for each tutor group to produce a minimum of 4 shoe boxes;

preferably for teenage girls and boys. This age group receive the lowest number of shoe boxes and yet there are so many teenagers who need them.

You are welcome to give additional boxes.

Students are asked to bring in items to fill these wonderful shoes boxes. The most important items are:

Toothbrush and toothpaste

Soap

Sponge or flannel

Comb or brush

Exercise books and pens or pencils

Further information can be found at: https://www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/

All boxes need to be filled and decorated by Monday 7 November 2016.

Thank you for your support for this wonderful cause.

Mrs L Foulger, Shoe Box Appeal Co-ordinator

Year 8 Football vs Bishop Ullathorne

Thursday 20 October 2016

Cardinal Newman started the match off slowly with Ullathorne controlling the game. However a good pass saw Ciaran Whelan

through on goal. He passed it around the keeper and Newman went 1-0 up. Following the goal Newman had full control of the game and a good

cross from Alex Davies saw Lorcan Hobbs smashing the ball into the bottom corner making it 2-0. Newman didn’t stop there as Emmanuel

Igboekwu scored two goals.

After half time Ullathorne kept fighting, bringing the score back to 5-5 but Alex Davies crushed their hopes as it finished 6-5.

Year 8 Football Team

Year 7 Netball Team

The Year 7 netball team meet to train every Wednesday after school between 3:10 - 4:30.

At the moment there are 14 regular netballers. As there are only 7 players allowed on the court, we hope to have

an A team and B team that will participate in matches and competitions with other local secondary schools. Our

team is committed and enthusiastic and we hope for many successes this year.

Netball is fun; we use balance, co-ordination, team work and agility. At the same time it develops our fitness level. In our training sessions we are

learning and improving important netball skills such as; ball handling skills, offensive and defence skills and goal shooting.

We enjoy the fact that netball is an active, non – contact competitive sport and by working together in our teams we hope to be taught and develop

skills we need now and in later life.

The Year 7 netball team are ready for the challenges of the year ahead.

Rhianna O’Connor 7KWD - Year 7 Netball Team Captain

Book of Remembrance

During the Month of November there will be a Book of

Remembrance in the Chapel. Please visit the chapel to

add the names of those who have gone to their eternal

rest. They will be remembered during the weekly Mass

in the Chapel throughout November.

Holy Day of All Saints

As a whole school we celebrated the holy day of All

Saints. We spent time in prayer reflecting upon the

prayerful bond that we have with those in heaven. Fr

Pat taught us about what it means to be a Saint - to be

a hero within our Church. It was a reflective

celebration of the Liturgy which gave students and staff

the chance to reflect upon their lives and roles with the Church and how

they can too lead holy lives."
