DSPL Conference 2018—“Speech, Language and

Communication” – Wednesday 7th

November 2018

We welcomed Emma Reed and Kate Purser, Speech and Language base

leaders and Chaulden and Longdean School, they explained the principles

of the Word Aware Model and a whole school approach to developing

Children’s vocabulary. We also had Dr Weston, a psychologist who talked

about the role of language in raising resilient children. The later part of the

morning was divided into a series of discussion groups to gain feedback

and suggestions into shaping the DSPL future priorities.

To summarise:

Word Aware is a structured whole school approach to promote the

vocabulary development of all children. This approach is full of practical and

inspiring ideas that can be easily applied to develop both spoken and

written vocabulary. The visual and kinetic imagery used to explain language

is particularly useful to help children memorise words. Kate and Emma will

be offering courses to schools and this can take the form of whole day or

twilight sessions. Please see the flyer attached, an additional flyer will be

sent out at a later date with more information including dates, times and

venues.

Kathy Weston inspired us with an engaging and informative talk about how

to raise resilience in children with special educational needs. Examples of

giving children the opportunity to shine, allowing them the space to make

safe mistakes where some of the many messages Kathy was promoting.

Kathy also told us about her radio show on 17th January radio Verulam 8pm

which will be a follow up of the talk about resilience and will allow delegates

to ask further questions.

Feedback from the course was encouraging with 68% of people rating the

course excellent and 32% good.

Changes to SPLD bases

As you may be aware there are some changes and streamlining of the SPLD team. All SpLD bases will be closing in March but some SpLD resource centres are although these have not yet been identified.

The SpLD service is now operating as one team rather than 10 bases, providing a high needs funded offer for named pupils which can be accessed by schools via a service request sent with accompanying background information, please see attached a blank referral form.

The standardised assessments for schools to use with pupils who have SpLD as part of the assess, plan, do, review cycle, will be available for schools on the professionals section of the Herts Local Offer

All requests for DSPL commissioned SpLD training to come via Lynne Williams SPLD team, rather than being negotiated directly with SpLD teachers. There will be a cost for commissioned training going forward – To be determined

As goodwill and to establish joint working with DSPLs, SpLD Teachers will provide one piece of training free early next term based around supporting schools to use the new, consistent assessments. Each school will be able to send one member of staff ( SENCo OR TA) – Details on Page 4.

DSPL8 Training & Courses

Although the courses are free to both schools and parents, they are funded by DSPL.

Recently we have had a number of people not attending courses they have previously

signed up for. Whilst we do understand that unforeseen events do occur, particularly

when either working with, or parenting a child with additional needs. However, please

could we remind people that often the courses we arrange have a waiting list and when

people DNA, not only is this a waste of resource it also prevents another person making

use of the course. If you are no longer able to attend one of our course please contact
