WHaT aRE anDY’s sKI & RIDE GUIDEs?Welcome to the newest edition of Andy’s Ski and Ride Guides. This guide has been completely rewritten with all the new changes that have happened at Breckenridge. Formally Andy’s Handy Ski Guides, these little booklets open up the world of the Breckenridge Ski Area. You will now know what happens on every run, lift and nook and crannie at Breckenridge. It does not matter how you slide down the hill, whether on skis, snowboard, snowbike, monoski, telemark or whatever, these guides will enhance your day.

If you are new to my guides, the best way to enjoy them is to understand my rating system; it is an international rating system, not a ski area specific system like the green, blue and black rating ski areas we have in place. There is a big difference in the difficulty of a trail such as a double black diamond in West Virginia than at Taos, New Mexico! A green at A-Basin may be a black in Vermont. My system is based on the whole scope of snowriding in the world. Check out my system on the next page. It’s important that you understand my ratings are an average and can be completely different from day to day. Please read and understand my liability statement. Hope you have fun out on the slopes and please check out www.andysskiandrideguides.com for more information on this and other ski areas.

Here at Breckenridge, the trails and lifts are divided into four sections; Peak 7, Peak 8, Peak 9 and Peak 10. Each trail is listed in alphabetical order. The lifts in each section follow that.

Find out where you are in my rating system and you will know where to go to stay in your comfort zone, or to challenge yourself! Remember that conditions change minute to minute and my ratings are a normal average.Check out my website: www.andysskiandrideguides.com

* The descriptions and ratings contained within Andy’s Ski & Ride Guides are based upon average weather and snow conditions. Varied conditions such as new snow, no snow, high winds, poor visibility, etc. can significantly change the character and difficulty of the slope. Skiers and riders are strongly encouraged to evaluate the conditions and determine if the slope is within their skill level. Please ski and ride with care.

anDY’s RaTInG sYsTEM

1-10 The easiest of the greens. Great for learning, perfect for your first day or two but probably boring to even the 2nd day skier or rider.

11-20 A nice, easy cruiser. Perfect for the advanced beginner, or those who desire a nice run without much pitch.

21-30 For those who are making the transition from advanced beginner to intermediate. Contains both advanced beginner and intermediate pitches.

31-40 Solid intermediate run with medium steepness.

41-50 Middle of the road terrain. Intermediates will be challenged, advanced will feel comfortable.

51-60 Tough blues. Maybe a diamond for some pitches but, on average, intermediate stuff.

61-70 Single Diamond terrain. Steeper than the tough blues, but not that hard for advanced intermediates.

71-80 Solid advanced terrain. Advanced Intermediates should think twice.

81-91Steep terrain, any type of snow, moguls, etc. Challenging but not yet extreme. Should be a solid advanced skier.

91-100 Experts only! Seriously. Anything in this category should not be skied or rode by anyone who has any apprehension....

Remember that andy’s Rating is an average and it will vary!

KEY TO UsInG THE GUIDE:

Every trail starts with all these vital numbers for a quick look at what there is to find:(A) Trail Name: I only talk about named trails so you will not

find any “secret stashes” in this guide. But there are plenty of named areas that I talk about...

(B) Rating: See Previous Page(C) Snowmaking: Either yes or no; good to know when low on

snow, especially in the early season(D) Groom: This has three different designations:

Groomed = Groomed almost every day; almost Occs. Groomed = Occasionally groomed; don’t count on it, check grooming report Never Groomed = Never groomed

(E) Color: This is the green, blue, black system that is in place at the ski area. This is ski area specific and only pertains to the trails and areas that Breckenridge has to offer. A blue here may not be the same as a blue elsewhere. (This is why my rating system on the previous page is better than the current rating system we have in place in this country.)

For the advanced, C.J.’s is one of the best that Breckenridge has to offer. You can get here by hiking from the traverse from the T-bar or traversing from the top of the Imperial Express SuperChair. You may still have some hiking from there depending on your traversing skills. Be here first on a powder day and you will most likely never forget this run as the powder shots are steep and long. There may be some rocks exposed depending on wind and snow conditions. Careful here during a blowing stormy day as you may not be able to see very far in this treeless and very high up section. Awesome place for the advanced!

Claimjumper is the far south trail in Peak 7 or the farthest north of the Peak 8 trails. So I included it in both sections. Claimjumper is a wide open blue that is groomed almost every day and is a fun rolling interme-diate run. This is the best way for the snow boarder to get back to Peak 8 as it’s not as much of a traverse as Forget-me-not. Cruising’ fun can be found here.

Art’s Bowle is the northern most flank of Peak 7 bowl and is very steep. Come off a natural spine after going down half of Peak 7 and you’ll get to Art’s Bowle. It’s steep and wide open here with very few trees but some rock outcroppings to be careful of. It ends all too quickly but the few turns here are great and sometimes powder can be found here when other places are tracked up since most drop in earlier. Can get scraped off and icy but not often.

Angels Rest is a great trail over in the Peak 7 Independence lift section that starts off a little steeper but then flattens out to be a groomed cruiser for all but the first day beginner. Some tree islands spice it up but this is truly a green run with a wide open feel and a flat meadow type terrain. They call this a blue because the beginning is a tad steeper.

Lincoln Meadows is a good name for this area as this is a very open and flat meadow for you to work on your turns. It starts off with a little steepness as all the trails over here do, but after that it’s a wide open and not very steep area. Beginners will be challenged at the beginning but will be fine after the first two pitches and will have lots of room to work on the skills necessary to improve.

Lower Forget-Me-Not is one of the ways from the top of the Independence SuperChair to get back to Peak 8. Snowboarders and those who do not like to traverse will not like this and should take Claimjumper instead. This open area can be windblown and have exposed rocks and tree clumps. This is the only way to get to the T-Bar though so if that’s what you need to do, then take this.

Fort Mary B is a tangent off of the bottom of the Pioneer Run in the Peak 7 Independence Lift area. It’s pretty flat and really should be a green but the top getting here is blue so they kept it that way. Wide open and turning to the left, Fort Mary B is a great place to make groomed turns in a very open area. Ends quickly at the bottom of Peak 7.

Jim Morrison would be proud they named a trail after his song. I always start singing this when skiing this steep and ungroomed trail in middle of Peak 7 bowl. This is the end of the ski area in fact and this has a pretty steep pitch to it. Only the advanced and up will enjoy this. Along the rope line there are rock outcropping so be careful when low on snow or when they first open it. It can have rocks throughout the season if it’s windy over here. Ends with some tree glades to play in before hitting the very flat Monte Cristo for the ride to the bottom.

Peak 7 bowl is what advanced skiing or riding is all about. This massive section includes huge and steep snow fields with no trees and some rocks. The deeper the snow the less rocks. You can get here in two ways; hike up from the traverse from the top of the T-bar or traverse from the top of the Imperial Express SuperChair. This is very steep and if you fall you may end up at the bottom if your arresting skills are not up to par. Great place for powder and steep terrain practice. Can get windblown but most of the time this is great for the advanced and up.

From the top of the Independence chair at Peak 7 and on the far north (skier’s left) side is Monte Cristo. This starts off a little steeper and then flattens out for the remainder of the trail. Very wide with a few tree islands, and lots of rolls make this a fun run for most. Practice your turns here as they groom this almost every day, and enjoy the rolls especially if you stick to the left side. It gets really flat at the end except for one very short steep section nearing the view of the chair lift. Fun for all!

Ore Bucket is the hardest area in the Peak 7 lower mountain trails. If you are with your family and bored, tell them you’ll meet them at the bottom of Peak 7 and go here. This is a gladed, never groomed area that has some short steep pitches, lots of trees, powder, moguls and other obstacles to keep you turning. It ends relatively quick though, back on Monte Cristo but it’s a fun alternative to the other easier trails in this section of Breckenridge.

Magic Carpet is one of the steepest sections of Breckenridge and can be found on the far northern side of Peak 7. Typical open bowl stuff here, with a good steep pitch, some rock bands and usually some small moguls. You’ll find great powder here after it snows as long as the snow didn’t slide after the patrol hits this with their avalanche bombs. This can be windblown after a blustery day. The advanced rider or skier will absolutely love this and the strong intermediate will be very challenged. There may be some hiking to get here.

Swan City really could be called Flat City as it is a tangent off of Pioneer that is really flat and easy. Wide open like all the trails in this area, this will be easy for the intermediate. The last pitch before it returns to Pioneer is a little steeper but really short.

Tele is on the south side of Art’s Bowle which is the skier’s left side of Peak 7 bowl. Great steep terrain can be found here as you come over a natural spine. You’ll wish it lasted longer though as this area is just a quick section which ends too soon and gets quite flat. This is a great place for powder. Named after an avy dog..

Wirepatch starts off with a medium steeper pitch for a blue with lots of trees and berms and moguls. This only lasts for a hundred yards and then it’s a flat and wide open meadow that a beginner would enjoy. The top however will be difficult for a beginner and is more for the intermediate. Lot’s of places for a little air here; exciting for those who like that.

Sadie is the middle of Art’s Bowle, an area in the Peak 7 Bowl. Named after an avalanche dog, this is a very steep but short pitch with an open feel to it. Make great steep turns here and you’ll feel the adrenaline pumping! Too bad it’s so short. This is great when there is ample coverage but conversely when low on snow this can have lots of rocks. Careful!

Pioneer is one of the main runs in the Peak 7 area and is a great blue cruiser. From the top of the Independence chair, this starts off a little tighter and steeper but very soon opens up to a wide rolly groomed journey. Midway through there is another steeper pitch. They leave some moguls on the skier’s left side sometimes for those who want to try bumps. This is a great groomed cruiser for most with a fun bunch of rolls and terrain changes. Careful because there may be many people travelling along with you. Make your best turns for the audience riding the chair. Just a fun blue for your skiing and riding pleasure.

The Independence SuperChair is a great quad that is fast and serves a lot of great blue terrain. This is a lot less busy than the other chairs at the bottom of Peaks 8 and 9 and offers a little respite from the masses. This can get busy sometimes, especially in the morning or around lunch time. This is a great area to bring the intermediate as there is great terrain here to work on the skills for advancement. There are easy blues and harder blues to keep you entertained. Take the BreckConnect to get here and get off at the second stop. Or you can ski over from the top any of the chairs on Peak 9 traversing to the skier’s left on Columbine.

InDEpEnDEnCE sUpERCHaIR™ 1320' VERTICal RIsE

Y-chute is the beef of the Peak 7 bowl and is open bowl skiing or riding at it’s best. Of course the more snow the better as there are rock bands that get exposed when low on snow or windy. Nice long and steep turns are found here, and the advanced will be challenged. Access this either halfway down and a traverse from the top of the Imperial Express or hike up; your choice...

Vertigo comes off the beginning of the traverse up from the T-Bar up to the Peak 7 summit. The higher you traverse up, the longer the run. You can also get here by traversing from the top of the Imperial Express SuperChair. The deeper the base the better this trail is as there are plenty of rock outcropping that can pop their evil little heads out when low on snow. It also can get windblown in this area blowing away the good snow. When it’s good though, its real good, especially for the advanced skier or rider. This will be difficult for better intermediates as it’s never groomed and the powder can be difficult because of the wind. Get here on a good day and it’s awesome!

Y-CHUTE

VERTIGO

The BreckConnect is a great lift that goes from the bottom of the Town of Breckenridge and has three stops. The first is the Shock Hill station for those staying at the Shock Hill condos or residences. The next stop is a short fifty foot walk to the Independence SuperChair and Peak 7. The final stop is at the bottom of Peak 8 and all that it has to offer. I park in the Miners or Tailing parking lots (it was $5/10 last year) and it’s an easy way to access the slopes without riding shuttle buses. At the end of the day you can ski right to the car via Four O’Clock and the Skyway Skiway and a small tunnel. Many use this to go to town for lunch or to get to your condo or house.

Boundary Chute is one of the blacks off of the T-bar off to the north. This open area has a varied pitch and lot of little trees, rocks and berms that make this a fun challenge for the advanced intermediate and up. This can get windblown and you’ll want to stay away from here when it’s nasty out, as it is very exposed.

Callie’s is a quick black coming off the top of the Colorado SuperChair and comes around and meets the easier Spruce. This is steeper than most of the trails in this area but still doable for the strong intermediate. This is harder when ungroomed.

Claimjumper is the far south trail in Peak 7 or the Northeast of the Peak 8 trails. So I included it in both sections. Claimjumper is a wide open blue that is groomed almost every day and is a fun rolling intermediate run. This is the best way for the snow boarder to get back to Peak 8 as it’s not as much of a traverse as Forget-me-not. Cruising’ fun can be found here.

Boreas is a tangent off of Rounders that has lots of terrain changes and has some steep areas. The two steeper pitches are narrow and moguled and will be difficult for many. Lots of trees add to the excitement. No grooming machine has ever been here that I know of.

Amen is another of the great trails in the 6-Chair area that all will find challenging and many will be over their heads. This steep black has all sorts of different terrain to keep you on your toes. You’ll find moguls, berms, trees and more here with usually pretty good moguls as good bump people enjoy this area. Always good on a powder day...

Adios is a great trail in the 6-Chair area that has great open areas and great tree lines. The pitch is pretty steep and this is a great place for powder for the advanced intermediate and up. You’ll find varied terrain here and it gets flatter as it comes under the chair for the final open, but not as steep, section.

Columbine is the upper traverse that takes you from the top of Peak 8 and either Superchairs over to the T-Bar and beyond. This is very flat except for one pitch near the top of the Rocky Mountain SuperChair. It almost goes uphill at one point so those not great on a snowboard may hate this.

Contest Bowl is the skier’s right flank of Horseshoe Bowl and is steep and a little more technical that Horseshoe Bowl itself. There are several chutes between rock bands and a few trees to keep you on your toes. Not as long as Horseshoe but a tad steeper, this will be very enjoyable to advanced riders. Can get windblown and crusty and the rocks can be more exposed depending on the snow year.

Crescendo is a great blue that wraps around from the top of the Colorado SuperChair and ends at the bottom. It starts out steeper and becomes a pretty consistent blue and then when it goes under the chair it eases up to a green. Can get crowded here.

Dukes is two trails in one. On the skier’s right of the snow guns, it’s usually groomed and has a nice even blue pitch to it. The first pitch is steeper then it flattens out. Usually crowded, you’ll need to watch out for others here. On the left of the snow guns is a gully and it’s a little steeper, and has walls and moguls. Again, watch out when going in or out.

Double Barrel is the farthest right you can go out off the top of 6-Chair. You’ll find lots of varied terrain here most of it easier and not as steep as the others around here. This is more of the way out for many as it goes back all the way to 6-Chair.

Cucumber Bowl is the skier’s left flank of Horseshoe bowl and has a nice steep pitch to it. Too bad it’s not longer. The snow rolls into here on storm and the open shots are wonderful. Head left and get some sparse trees and a couple of hits to jump off. Watch out for the run out to the left as it goes uphill. Great area for finding powder and steeps.

NEVER GROOMEDanDY’s RaTInG71 Frosty’s Freeway is a feeder trail that takes you from the top of Peak 9 down to the bottom of E-Chair. This has some varied terrain and is going to be challenging for the intermediate as you will have berms, trees, ‘hits’, moguls and steeper areas. You can access a few trails off this such as Tiger, Rendezvous, Southern Cross and Lower Psychopath. You can also use this to gain access to Tunnel to take you down towards the bottom.

Four O’Clock starts from the top of Peak 8 at the Vista house and goes all the way to the bottom and the town of Breckenridge. It starts off as a blue but then becomes pretty flat and work road type after that. Beginners won’t like the top but the rest is easy. It is always crowded and you need to watch out for people here. The patrol may be out enforcing speed here also. This is a great way to see lots of rich peoples houses and condos, or maybe to get back to yours if you’re that lucky. Great way to get to the lower pay parking lots, or the BreckConnect Gondola via Skyway Skiway.

Forget-Me-Not is a fun open black to the skier’s left of the T-Bar. You almost get to the footpack up Peak 7 here and many go down here as they don’t want to climb up. You’ll find nice snow here if it has not been windy, and many rolls, small trees, and rocks that keep you on your toes. The last pitch is steeper, so be prepared. Great when not windblown.

East Snowbird is a wide open trail in the 6-Chair area that is probably the easiest in this area. This is not as steep or treed as most of the trails here. It is still advanced terrain here so be careful. Try this one first before venturing to the others to see if you can hang...if so you can graduate up to the others...

Dyersville is one of the two trails in the Rip’s Ride lift learning area that is very flat and would be boring to all but the newest beginners. This is a great place to learn though, as not many others will be whizzing by you in this controlled speed area. This is a great place to teach someone the finer nuances of snow sliding.

Hombre is another of the great advanced trails in the 6-Chair area. Ask a local, and they will tell you this section of Breckenridge is one of the best for the good skier or rider. Hombre specifically has lots of moguls, steeps, drop-offs, rocks and open snow fields to keep you on your toes. This is great for those who like lots of variety and challenge. Watch out for others on the fast run out at the bottom.

Horseshoe Bowl is one of Breckenridge’s crown jewels for the advanced snow rider. This huge playground of steeps, powder and fun is great. You’ll find moguls and drop-offs, small tree glades and large rock piles in this great bowl. Face shot after face shot can be found on a powder day, with an nice semi-steep and consistent pitch. The middle is almost tree free, so watch out when the wind is blowing for vertigo, and also watch out for large rock bands when the snow base is lower. Check out the outer flanks (cucumber and contest bowls) for blown in snow and more snow when this gets skied out. Can get windblown also....

High Anxiety is a multi-pitched run between the two big chairs in the main Peak 8 area. These pitches usually have lots of moguls and offer many different terrain changes. This has a couple short steep pitches but most is just somewhat steep. There are many double fall lines which add to the difficulty.

Goodbye Girl is a steep mogul pitch off of Four O’Clock that goes down towards the midway load of the Peak 8 Superconnect. Make good turns here for the lift riders as you go down this steeper bump run. This faces southeast so it can get great when there is sunshine, and not so great when there is not, especially in the spring.

George’s Thumb is an open section from the top of the Imperial Express SuperChair that heads off to the skier’s left. This has open powder turns with new snow, or usually good hard pack turns as the snow blows in here over the ridge line. This is pretty steep, challenging the advanced intermediate and up. There can be some moguls and also rocks.

NEVER GROOMEDanDY’s RaTInG73 The Lower Boneyard is a short and mildly steep area below the bottom of 6-Chair headed for E-Chair or the traversing Tunnel trail. This has moguls and several different cants and sometimes they groom a stripe or two. This can be a difficult area for intermediates as the terrain is quite varied.

Lobo is another of the great trails in the 6-Chair area that is super for the advanced. You’ll find no snowmaking, usually little crowds, and terrain that is challenging. This is great on a powder day with steep rolling terrain, moguls and ledges; providing the seasoned skier or rider with plenty to enjoy.

Little Johnny is a black run coming off of Columbine that has a very short, steeper black pitch, then a flat section and then it rolls around underneath the Rocky Mountain SuperChair. That pitch has a couple of different fall lines and usually lots of big moguls. This ends quickly though and flattens out for the journey to the bottom.

The Lake Chutes are some of the most intimidating runs at Breckenridge. After climbing up the 291 stair steps to the ridge line (yes, I counted) go to the skier’s right and you have many choices along a ridge with a cornice. This cornice can build up quite high because of wind and snow conditions. That means your first turn requires a drop off this cornice, and that can be scary for most. The terrain here is steep and rocky with open areas and tight chutes. For most, the first turn will be the toughest, and the steep turns will be great! This is pretty short though, and flattens out to an easier black quickly. Views are the best at Breckenridge.

Imperial Bowl used to be a long climb that rewarded the hardy local with open powder turns. Now, with the Imperial Express SuperChair, we can enjoy this area without the walk. This means many more people will be here to take those great medium steep powder lines, and moguls form after many have gone down. This is still a great place for the advanced intermediate to be over their heads and all others that are better to really enjoy the terrain here.

Northstar is a wide open blue with trees on each side with the last pitch being very flat. They groom this every day so it should be perfect for most who can stop and turn both ways. The only problem is that it’s a very popular run as it’s the most convenient way out from the top of Peak 7 over to Peak 8.

North Bowl is right above the T-Bar and is accessed off of the Imperial Express SuperChair. This is wide open and steep, offering open powder and windblown areas with no trees or anything else; just nice steep skiing or riding. An occasional rock pops up but this is mostly windblown carvable snow, with some moguls every once in a while.

No Name is a great run in the 6-Chair area that gives the advanced skier or boarder ample opportunities for air, face-shots and moguls. The locals love 6-Chair, for it has much of what they want; powder and challenge without the huge crowds.

Middle Snowbird is a great run on a powder day and almost always great for the advanced. If you want variety, including rocks to jump off, moguls, and cants, along with terrain that does not see a snow groomer; this is the place for you. You won’t be alone long though, as the locals consider this their favorite area. Be here early when it snows.

Mach 1 is a ripping black in the Chair 4 area that is steep and wide. This has what the advanced person wants, a consistent fall line and usually good bumps. On a powder day you’ll swallow plenty of snow here! In the spring this can have great slush bumps. But after it freezes it can get dangerous. This goes right below the chair so listen for hoots above you!

Psychopath is a wild ride that starts from the top of 6-Chair and ends all the way at the bottom of E-Chair. The top half of Psychopath is steeper with neat terrain changes and a widely varied pitch. This is always fun for the advanced skier or boarder, with lots of chances to get air, powder and challenging terrain. Then it flattens out and the second half of Psychopath is a natural half-pipe style gully that goes from the bottom of 6-Chair and ends at the bottom of E chair. Come here on a powder day and you will be hooting and hollering! In the springtime, this is solid in the morning, but as things soften up the terrain will get nicer. Expect more moguls in the springtime also.

pTaRMIGan

Ptarmigan is a wide open black off of the T-Bar that can be great or bad depending on wind. This gets windblown and can make it’s snow hard to negotiate; or it can be perfect... Kind of hit or miss here. This is not that steep for a black but has sparse tree, moguls and rolls that keep you on your toes.

Powerline is an easy green under the slow 5-Chair that’s a good place for beginners to work on their stopping and turning skills. This is a little hidden compared to other trails in the area and you should not have fast people whipping by; most of the time..

pOWERlInE

Pika is the easiest of the trails to the north or skier’s left of the T-Bar. But that does not mean it’s easy. The terrain is rolling, and has lots of character. Plus, it’s usually windblown which adds to it’s difficulty. This is a good place to bring the intermediate before bringing them into Horseshoe bowl, as to see if they can handle it. On a powder day this run shines unless it’s really windy...

pIKa

Pathfinder is a traverse type trail that takes you from the top of Peak 8 and the Colorado SuperChair and brings you around to many different choices and eventually ends at Northstar. This will be better than Columbine for the bad traverser unless you need to get to the T-bar.

ROUnDER’s

Rounder’s is the longest trail between The Peak 8 Superchairs. This has a rolling pitch with a couple steeper pitches and usually lots of moguls. This is totally different if they groom it. Personally I think it’s a lot better when groomed as the moguls tend to be non rhythmic as there is a canted face and not good skiers or riders here.

snOW WHITE

Snow White is a huge snowfield that faces southeast that you have to climb to get to from the top of the Imperial SuperChair. Then you traverse past the Lake Chutes to get to Snow White. This is steep at first and only for the advanced and up. You can find great untouched powder here, or if it been a while since new snow; crud or sun baked snow.

sOlITUDE

Solitude is a great bump run in the 6-Chair area. This is pretty steep and usually has big moguls. Great on a powder day, not so good when there hasn’t been any snow lately. You can do this over and over with the not usually crowded 6-Chair...

Rendezvous comes off the middle off Tiger and heads over to Southern Cross. This has a nice black pitch to it and is not as steep as some of the other in this area. It is still a black and will be tough for intermediates. On a powder day, you’ll be impressed with the terrain here and when the springtime bumps come, this is one of the best places to go if you like that sort of thing. But let the snow soften in the spring because it sets up pretty hard each night.

REnDEzVOUs

Quandry is the mountain that some say is the easiest 14er to climb; one of the 54 14,000 footers in Colorado. The trail itself is a super run off 6-Chair that keeps the advanced skier or rider challenged, with terrain that is always changing. Rocks, moguls, and more will keep you happy here. This is especially nice on a powder day but I guarantee that you wont be the only one who knows this!

Springmeier is a wide open blue from the top of Peak 8 that gets groomed every day and intermediates will love it’s consistent pitch. The only drawback is that it’s very crowded. Watch out for the beginner who made the mistake of coming here...

spRInGMEIER

Southern Cross is a great black off of the top of Peak 8 SuperConnect or the Colorado SuperChair. Head to the right off of either and you’ll find this steep and wide trail that is usually loaded with moguls and berms and a nice consistent pitch. The final pitch is steeper and more challenging. This will be very hard for the intermediate but above that it will be a nice test of mogul and steepness skills.

sOUTHERn CROss

Swinger is an easier green coming as one of the options off of Springmeier. This is wide and short and joins up with Crescendo for the flat and crowded trip to the bottom. This is usually groomed and intermediates will have no problems here. Really the only thing is that it’s busy around here so keep your head up looking for the many snow sliders here.

sWInGER

Spruce is a medium blue that has some rolling pitches and a pretty wide feel. It is very busy however, so that feel can be different on crowded days. Keep your eyes open for others and you’ll be fine. Many people like this trail as it’s a fun open blue that you can see the chair; and many feel safer that they are not going in the wrong way if they can follow it.

TWIsTER

Twister is a short and fun green for the beginner that doesn’t want much of a challenge. The ski school uses this a lot so you’ll see lots of serpentine snakes of lessons. This is flat and wide and has lots of room to work on your turns. Hopefully you’ll learn fast enough to get to more exciting and longer terrain.

VERTIGO

Tunnel is the trail between the bottom of the E-Chair and the midway load of the Peak 8 Superconnect. This is relatively flat and can get a tad crowded as people come off multiple trails onto this.

TUnnEl

Too Much is a great trail in the 6-Chair area that has lots of different terrain including bumps, trees and open powder fields. The intermediate will be over the head here so keep it for the advanced and up. Locals love it here so get here early to be rewarded.

TOO MUCH

Tiger is a wide open black coming off the top of the Peak 8 Superconnect chair. Always full of moguls, this bump run can be seen by the chair so make the riders happy by ripping a good line! This has a left hand cant to it which makes for some unrhythmic moguls sometimes. On a powder day this is great for those who like bumps and faceshots. Watch out in the springtime as this gets lots of sun; hard in the morning and soft in the afternoon...

WHalE’s TaIl

Whale’s Tail is a huge open area from the top of the Imperial Express chair that heads down to the Peak 7 bowl area. This large expanse of open powder fields offers the powder skier or rider many lines of long and somewhat steep terrain. There are several fall lines and this can have some moguls. This gets a lot of wind so it can be windswept for sure. This can be great because the wind will dump snow in from the other side and this can be velvety good! Watch out for vertigo on a snowy day though, since there are no trees or other objects to give you reference. Great for powder turns during or after a good snow for the advanced skier or rider.

WHITE CROWn

White Crown is a wide open area to the skier’s left of the T-Bar that has a consistent pitch and some fun terrain for the upper intermediate and up. There are tree islands and berms for air, and an open type feel. Sometimes you need to watch here as it’s so open the wind can mess with the terrain. Most of the time it’s a fun black that’s not too difficult for most.

West Snowbird is a great advanced trail that varies in its conditions and terrain. Off the top of 6-Chair, this area has a wide open feel with lots of trees, moguls, berms and rolls that make this a fun run. On a powder day, you’ll find some of the best open terrain for getting a myriad of face-shots, but conversely, on low snow years, this can get a little nasty. Let things soften up before coming here in the spring. Most of the time this is epic Breckenridge skiing or snowboarding. Lots of locals like this area, so it can get crowded and skied off fast. Get here early on a powder day.

WEsT snOWbIRD

Way out is in the 6-Chair area and has lots of personality. It has open fields, moguls, trees and lots of terrain changes to keep you on your toes. The locals love it over here, and you’ll find great powder shots in the morning of a powder day. This gets tracked out fast but can be still worth it later in the day. Some people will come through here after doing Snow White (a hike to area from the top of the Imperial Express SuperChair).

6-Chair is the Breckenridge locals favorite, and it has some great terrain for the advanced skier or rider. The chair itself is a slow two-person lift, but most of the time you enjoy the rest to catch your breath from the advanced terrain below. Lots of different type of terrain can be found here, including powder, crud, moguls, berms, jumps, trees gullies and more. This is where you bring the person that wants a non-groomed experience. During a snowstorm, 6-Chair can get a little windy up top, but when you get into the trees it’s less exposed and warmer. 6-Chair is definitely one of the best places at Breckenridge for the advanced.

5-Chair is a two person center pole chair that does not go very fast. This goes from the bottom of Peak 8 to the middle of the Four O’Clock ski run. From here you can get to some nice greens on Peak 8, traverse over to the bottom of Peak 9 or get to one of the large terrain parks/half pipe in this area. The latter is why this gets the most use. Most of the time I’d rather take the Colorado SuperChair to get a longer run in a shorter time but that can be busy. This is a better way to get to the Four O’clock run at the end of the day or when the weather is not cooperating at the top.

Rip’s Ride is a great place to bring the beginner to work on the very basic skills necessary to advance up to harder terrain. This slow two-person chair on Peak 8 is perfect for the beginner that wants to stay away from the much congested area on Peak 9 where all the beginner trails are located. Peak 9 is a madhouse and can be intimidating to the first or second day beginner. Bring them here to teach them turning and stopping skills, and they will progress faster because they are not worried about being run into. This is not to say that this doesn’t get crowded, but it seems to be less crowded. You don’t have the advanced skiers and riders in this area because there is absolutely no reason for them to be here.

The Rocky Mountain SuperChair is one of the two quads at the bottom of Peak 8. This gives you easy access to most of the northern Peak 8 trails, the T-Bar and gets you to the middle of Peak 7 via Columbine. This can get busy but it’s a high-speed quad that moves people out quickly. You have many choices below this chair, from easy blacks to hard and medium blues. The beginner probably should stay away from here.

The Peak 8 SuperConnect is a great four person high speed quad that moves you around the mountain in a much more efficient manner than in the past. You don’t have to go down to the busy bottom of Peak 9 to take a chair to traverse over to Peak 8. This takes you right to the top of Peak 8. In the past it was a pain to move around between peaks but this has solved that problem. You can access all that Peak 8 has to offer from here as well as get to Peak 7, or 6-Chair to get you to the Imperial Express SuperChair. The T-bar has some of the best advanced terrain at Breckenridge off of it. There are no greens and blues so obviously you should be an advanced intermediate and up. This is one way to access the Imperial Express SuperChair or some of the many Breckenridge bowls. Two people at a time, this old time t-bar is hard for some that are not used to this type of lift. There are a couple of hard parts too, especially the last pitch which is fairly steep. You’ll find many of the locals here on a powder day because of the many different lines to be had off this. Don’t sit on it, let it pull you up... If two of you are fighting it, lean in not out and you’ll be fine...

Briar Rose is another of the Breckenridge Peak 9 cruisers that is wide and groomed and enjoyable for most intermediates and up. You’ll find a fun pitch here, and although usually crowded, it is open enough to share with others. This has lots of terrain and is a great run to work on the skills to make you better. Ends towards the bottom of Peak 10.

Broadway is a hike to trail from the top of the Mercury SuperChair that rewards your effort with powder and a steep gully like pitch. This is the widest of the trails in this area and most don’t get back here so you should have nice powder turns. I think most can get here in less than twenty minutes depending on your fitness. After the open part there are some trees with steeper pitches and then flat tight trees. Please bring a partner when doing this area.

Bonanza is your typical Breckenridge blue run with a wide open feel and a nice intermediate pitch. Even early intermediates will enjoy this groomed daily pitch, with gentle rolls and lots of room to turn. This can get very crowded though, so watch out for others and be consistent in your actions. Practice your skills here so you can venture beyond this crowded area.

American is the widest trail at Breckenridge and a great cruiser that will make the intermediate and up very happy. This starts at the top of the Beaver Run SuperChair and it has a great wide open feel. Sometimes they leave bumps on the side but most of the time the middle is groomed nice. Don’t go so fast that you are out of control, but you can let it rip here, within reason... The patrol will “pull you over” if you are going too fast as this is usually pretty crowded. The pitch itself is nice and consistent until it flattens at the end and cuts over on to the easy Lower American trail for the trip to the bottom.

Frontier is a easy green and less crowded than many of the other greens in this area. This is found off of Red Rover and is wide and flat and a great place to practice your turns and stops. This rejoins Silverthorne for the last pitch to the bottom.

FROnTIER

This is one of the most famous of Breckenridges ski trails and one of the best names. This is difficult but not as hard as the name would have you believe. This is a funnel type of trail that is steep and has several fall lines. There are many moguls, which is good if you fall, as they will slow your fall! This can be very intimidating for the early advanced skier or rider but when there is good snow here (often) this can be a fun test of your skills. Keep turning and you’ll be fine if you do have the skills.

DEVIl’s CROTCH

Crosscut is exactly what it sounds like. It takes you from the top of 5-Chair, joins Four O’Clock for a narrow but flat ride down to the middle of the Snowflake lift. Then Crosscut bears right to go to the bottom of the C Chair. Watch out for beginners!

CROssCUT

Columbia’s difficulty is from the crowds not the pitch. This is a great intermediate area that is usually groomed and fairly wide open. But since the two Superchairs are on either side, you will find many people skiing and riding here. You must enjoy this trail with your head up looking for others. Try to be consistent so others won’t run into you...

COlUMbIa

Cashier is another of the many Peak 9 blue cruisers that make Breckenridge a very popular place. They groom this every night so you can have a fresh carpet of groomed snow every day. You’ll find lots of people here though, so be careful of others. This trail has many intersections with people coming from all ways, so keep your head up!

Lower American is a pretty flat traverse that take you from the bottom of American, and takes you across most of Peak 9 to the Silverthorne trail. This is very flat so you’ll need to keep your speed if you want to make it without poling or taking a foot out... But be careful because you cut across many trails with fast people coming down, beginners everywhere and general chaos on a crowded day!

lOWER aMERICan

Little Burn is a short tangent off the top of E-Chair that is flat with a few trees. A good warm-up pitch but it ends very quick onto the more difficult runs off the E-Chair. The intermediate could handle this but would be over their head if continuing on. Bear right to get back to more manageable stuff.

lITTlE bURn

Kings Way is just a cut though trail that brings you from Silverthorne over to the bottom of Bonanza so you can get up the Beaver Run SuperChair. Not really a trail, it’s a cut over but the marketing department can count this as another trail.

KInG’s WaY

Inferno is a very steep and not very wide chute that requires the advanced skier or rider to be able to control speed while making frequent turns getting around this tricky pitch. Trees and weird cants make the moguls less rhythmic, but at least they are they to slow you down. If you have bad habits, they will shine here. Conquer this and you can handle almost anything Breckenridge can throw at you. This can get tough on a spring day after a warm one the day before. Watch for thin snow at the top...

InFERnO

For word buffs this is a great double entendre. Hades (next to Devil Crotch) means god of the underworld but also is the incline of a mine shaft. The trail itself is devilishly steep that will challenge almost anyone. This is located in the hidden and difficult E-Chair area. You’ll find many moguls, different pitches and steep terrain. Great for the advanced and up who want to get the heart beating. Super when first on a powder day, but conversely this can be treacherous when low on snow or in the spring after a sunny day has beat down on this trail.

Peerless is a ripping blue trail that is almost always bumped up with huge moguls and some very large man-made jumps. This is because most of the mogul contests, including the World Cup, pro events and amateur bump series are held here. Warren Miller shot a great bump scene here in the movie, SnowRiders.™ The bumps are usually very good since all the good mogul people come here, and there is usually a “zipper line” or two right down the fall line. Throw some hospital air off the huge jumps and you’ll be a hero; or taken down in a sled!

Mine Shaft is a steep and moguled trail that can be very fun if you like that kind of trail, or very dangerous depending on the conditions. This is located off the top of Peak 9. When it just snowed and you’re one of the first, you will get a great steep pitch and many face shots. But it deteriorates as the day goes on and gets harder. If it was hot yesterday and got cold at night (frequently in the spring) this can get rock hard and treacherous. Most of the time this is fun for the advanced bumper.

Lower Sawmill goes from the bottom of the C Chair and brings you over to the bottom of the Beaver Run SuperChair. You can also access the Snowflake run from here to take you to many condos and the bottom of the Snowflake lift. This is very flat and boring and sometimes even goes uphill. You will need to keep your speed here, use your poles or unstrap if you are a snow boarder. This is more of a feeder than a ski run.

Lower Lehman is a flat trail that is the farthest south green on Peak 9. This starts from the bottom of the Falcon SuperChair about halfway down Peak 9. This is very easy and flat and is a great place to work on your stopping and turning skills. I like this better than many of the other trails in the area as it’s kind of hidden compared to many of the others. There will be less people on this trail which makes the apprehensive beginner feel more at home. This ends at the pretty crowded QuickSilver Super6.

Sawmill is a very flat traverse from the midway load of the Peak 8 SuperConnect. This goes to the bottom of C Chair and continues on to Lower Sawmill to the bottom of the Beaver Run SuperChair. This is very easy and is more of a connector than a trail. This follows the valley bottom between Peak 8 and Peak 9. Many trails feed out on this traverse so you won’t be alone in most cases. The section from the bottom of C Chair is almost uphill so keep your speed while watching out for others.

saTan’s

Satan’s is another trail in the “hellish” area off the top of Peak 9. You’ll find steep and narrow chutes, all of which usually have big moguls. It’s good there are moguls though, as they will slow you down during a big free fall if you mess up! You’ll need to make many turns here, controlling your speed or it will be a painful trip down to the bottom. The spring is usually a great time to come here when everything has softened up.

RED ROVER

Red Rover is basically a traverse from the bottom of Peak 9 over to the Beaver Run SuperChair. This is very flat and more of a way to get from here to there than a trail. Be careful though, because this area has many beginners just learning the finer basics and are scared of anyone going fast. Also, because this traverses Silverthorne, El Dorado Terrain Park and eventually joins the masses on the trip to the bottom, you’ll encounter many people wanting to run into you.

Sizzler is a quick black coming off the top of Peak 9 and is an alternative to the boring Upper Lehman for the better skier or rider. The intermediate and up should be able to handle the many moguls and fun rolls that make Sizzler interesting. This is especially fun on a powder day, but then again, what isn’t? I know there are some of you out there that don’t love powder but you will when you get better.

snOWFlaKE

Snowflake is a trail that takes you from the very flat Sawmill down to the bottom of the Snowflake lift. You can access many condos and residences in this area and you can avoid the bottom of Peak 8 when crowded to get you over to Peak 9. This is a nice green with lots of open flat pitches that are great for the beginner to work on turning and stopping.

Silverthorne is a long and flat trail that runs basically from the bottom of Peak 10 to the bottom of Peak 9. Since all trails from the skier’s left of the Falcon SuperChair and all trails to the skier’s right of the Beaver Run SuperChair all filter down to Silverthorne, this can become very crowded. The trail itself is flat and easy and a great place to learn but because it’s so busy, this can be a hindrance to learning. It is so flat that it’s hard to get too much speed though which keeps the danger factor down.

sIlVERTHORnE

Shock is a quick steeper pitch off of Volunteer that takes you over to the midway load of the Peak 8 SuperConnect lift. This has a consistent black pitch and sometimes has many moguls on it. They do groom this every so often, making it a lot easier to negotiate than when it’s fistfuls of bumps. This can also take you to Sawmill, down to the bottom of Peak 9. Fun on powder days, but not when there is no new snow.

NEVER GROOMEDanDY’s RaTInG83 Tom’s Baby is the farthest left of the trails at E-Chair and is steep and challenging. Intermediates will get their butt kicked here, while the advanced will enjoy the challenge. Big moguls, steep pitches and various snow conditions keep this run difficult. Great when first on a powder day, and also good when it softens up in the spring. This can get difficult when those parameters aren’t met. When this gets icy or refreezes in the spring, this can be very difficult.

TOM’s babY

The Back 9 requires at least a ten minute walk from the top of The Mercury SuperChair and is a big open field of snow above the Windows. This has nothing to do with the back 9 at Breckenridge’s Jack Nicklaus Golf Course, which is the states second most difficult. This is difficult because you are tired after the hike but it’s open and has nice lines, especially on a powder day. When you get to the Windows though, it gets tighter and harder.

Sundown Access is a option off of Peerless that gets you over to the Beaver Run SuperChair or the Village. If you continue on Peerless it takes you to the Midway load of the Snowflake chair or the super flat Lower Sawmill to the bottom as an option also.

sUnDOWn aCCEss

Sundown starts as a nice, wide open blue that crosses under the Beaver Run SuperChair. The pitch is nice for the intermediate and the advanced beginner will be challenged. Then, unfortunately the pitch disappears and is pretty much flat and very green. This continues to the bottom while joining many other trails which means this can be quite busy. Be careful of the many beginners here and you’ll be fine.

Volunteer is a nice blue off the top of Peak 9 that winds around and is a nice test for the intermediate. When groomed this is a great cruiser and when not groomed in a while this can get some weird bumps. For a challenge, take the short Shock off of this to see if you can handle black terrain. It’s short enough that if you’re over your head, it ends quickly.

Upper Lehman is an easy and long blue coming off the Mercury SuperChair on the skier’s right flank of Peak 9. This is wide open and is a pretty easy cruiser when it’s groomed. It can get some moguls on powder days, but most of the time it’s nicely groomed. This runs into Lehman for a long and flat trip to the bottom with stops at the bottom of Peak 10 and then all the way at the bottom of Peak 9.

Twin Chutes is a great area that requires a long hike to get to. Some might be able to make it here in 15 minutes but some might take a whole lot longer than that. Access the gate that takes you here from the top of the Mercury SuperChair. After hiking past the Windows, the Back 9 and Broadway, you’ll be at the top of the climb. Look to the skier’s left and you’ll see the Twin Chutes. The right one is more of gully type and the left one is more open. Both are wide and not that steep but definitely have a back country feel. You’ll most likely be rewarded for your efforts with untouched powder stashes and great fun. Warning: The woods after are pretty tight.

O.K. that’s not true but it’s a short lift made for the beginner who wants to practice turning and stopping and wants to avoid the crowded mess at the bottom. Most will get bored of this quickly but this is a good place to bring the apprehensive beginner.

The Beaver Run SuperChair is a very crowded four person chair that bring you from the bottom of Peak 9 to near the top in just 9 minutes. The Mercury SuperChair is a high speed quad designed to ease some of the crowding in the Peak 9 area. The bottom of Peak 9 is very flat and very crowded on most days, so this give you another alternative than going all the way down. From the top of Peak 9 where this goes, you have a myriad of choices, mostly blues and blacks and some hikable terrain.

This also has a midway load which helps in getting you up without having to go down a huge boring connector trail. The unique construction is also interesting for those with engineering skills.

This is a short learning area mostly for ski school but open to the public. This is for the second day beginner working on skills, probably boring to most because it’s so short.

E-Chair is a great two person lift for the advanced that takes you to a section of the mountain that is very difficult. Or it can take you to many of the fun blues on Peak 9. This chair is not very fast and some times the lines can get long, yet, sometimes there are no lines at all. People coming off some of the others chairs in this area get filtered down here so that’s why it gets busy. You can do the thigh burning trails below this chair over and over, which will make your day short-er because there are many steeps and bumps here. This is great for the advanced on a powder day! Careful as these trails change a lot with the freeze thaw of the springtime or when low on new snow.

The QuickSilver Super6 is a double loading six person high speed lift that starts at the bottom of Peak 9, where the Maggie Restaurant and the Village at Breckenridge is located, and takes you up midway on Peak 9. This is great for beginners and intermediates and gives all others access to the other lifts to take you up the mountain. This is always crowded but the double loading lift eases some of that. This really doesn’t take you that far up and can be quite congested so I think as your ability progresses, you should head out elsewhere. Great for the beginner to keep working on those skills necessary to go beyond.

This is a super short carpet ride that is for the first day beginner looking to get up the hill about 100 yards (not even) and it’s so flat you can hardly get any speed. This is more for the first hour beginner as most will graduate up from here very quickly.

They don’t groom this every day but they do groom it a lot. This is one of the places they run bigger races so sometimes it’s closed to the public. The Burn is one of Breckenridge’s best tree glades. Located on Peak 10, this faces a tad north so it holds snow better than elsewhere. Moguls and trees, with a steep advanced pitch can be found here. Dark Rider is an area in the south Peak 10 trails that faces south and has lots of bumps. Hopefully they are soft because there is new snow or the sun is hitting it. When either of those two factors are not the case you may find icy or very hard moguls. There is no easy way out and this is pretty steep. Only the advanced and up will enjoy it here but as all the trails in this area end up on Flapjack, speed is your friend in the end. Careful though!

Doublejack is a super wide trail in the Peak 10 area that offers the advanced intermediate and up a great cruiser. You can make many runs in a row here since this is directly off the Falcon SuperChair. This ego boosting pitch is pretty consistent all the way down and the parallel skier or good snow boarder will be smiling from ear to ear when this is groomed. Those who like powder will be getting big face shots on a powder day. This is a great run and not as crowded as many on peak 9. That is not to say this doesn’t get crowded though, as this is probably the busiest of the Peak 10 trails.

Crystal is one of the main runs in the Peak 10 area and runs almost entirely under the Falcon SuperChair. It has a nice consistent blue/black pitch with a mellow start but then the same pitch almost until the end. This is great when it’s not crowded but sometimes this can be very busy. They let some bumps form on the sides so you can dip in and out of them. When not crowded this is great and can be done repeatedly with the fast quad. Careful of fences and other man made objects that can be in the way and watch out for others when busy (actually always).

Corsair is a great long bump run off of the top of Peak 10, which usually has big moguls at the beginning that gradually get bigger as it gets steeper. You can do many laps in this area with the less crowded Falcon SuperChair coupling Corsair with the usually groomed Upper Lehman. This will certainly shorten your day unless you are an accomplished mogul skier or rider as this is pretty long and challenging for a mogul run.

Elan is a quick and steep black and is the pitch off of the middle of Trinity. This is short and takes you over to the flat Flapjack. Most will forgo this quick and difficult trail as it brings you the wrong way so this is why the snow can be better here.

Flapjack is the run out and traverse back to the Falcon SuperChair. It is so flat that there are parts that are uphill. Skiers will have to pole hard and most snow boarders with have to take a foot out. Keep your speed as you hit this trail to try to shorten the walk. But be careful of others when going fast.

Grits is a fun and short tangent off of Crystal in the Peak 10 area. This is usually littered with moguls and sometimes they have a great rhythm. Sometimes they don’t. It’s short enough though that you’ll get out of there quick if they are bad. It’s a little steeper than Crystal so keep that in mind. Ends quickly on Lehman near the Falcon SuperChair.

Quiver has a great steep pitch to it and most of the time fairly good moguls. It faces south so the sun helps soften it up but that also can make it hard and icy. Powder days are when it’s best. This is super short though and one retraction is the fact that at the end you have to go fast to help shorten the super flat Flapjack. Obviously snow boarders are not going to like the run out. Fun run and worth it but not always.

Mustang is a fun steeper pitch usually riddled with moguls far on the rope line of Peak 10. This has a steep pitch to it and will get the adrenaline flowing. This is pretty quick though, and there is a long run out that gets incredibly flat... watch out snow boarders! Careful as this faces south and can get icy in the spring or when there has been a warm up period. There are some forest boundary gates here but you should only go out there if you’re 100% percent sure you know what you are doing, have avalanche safety gear and knowledge how to use them. If your unprepared I would not suggest it at all.

TRInITY

The Falcon SuperChair is a great quad that brings you from the bottom of Peak 10 right back to the top of Peak 10. This is a very fast chair and the lines are usually not that bad. Sometimes, but not all the time! One can get a lot of vertical here, very fast. This is for the solid intermediate and up. There are long, wide cruisers here, and many challenging bump areas. Powder is found off to the south almost always and there are great tree sections also. Consult the rest of this guide for specifics on each trail, as there are lots of different terrain choices here.

Trinity is the easier run out from the southern Peak 10 trails that takes you traversing from the far rope line back to Flapjack to get back to the bottom of Peak 10. There are small steeper sections and moguls and even some air possibilities in this easier (as opposed to Elan) way out of Peak 10 south side trails.

Spitfire is a great bump run that gets progressively steeper the farther you go. This makes the moguls get bigger and bigger. Most of the time the lines are pretty good with quality mogul people coming through here making good rhythmic lines. Sometimes this can get very solid, especially in the spring when the freeze-thaw process is in full effect. The trees in this area are great for the expert.

TREE lInEsThere are many great tree lines in Breckenridge. Please note that tree skiing is very dangerous and should not be attempted by those who are not good enough. You should be an advanced intermediate or above, and have good confidence. You should always ski or board with a partner.

1. THE BURN: RATING: 89 The Burn has some great tree lines that will keep the advanced skier

or boarder happy, especially on a powder day. Coming off the top of Peak 10, The Burn has both tight lines and more open lines in the middle. Depending on your proficiency, you will enjoy the nice consistent pitch and the open tree lines. When there hasn’t been a lot of snow lately, this can get hard and dangerous so be aware! This happens in the spring when it gets hot and then cold at night.

2. NO NAME: RATING: 72 No Name has some nice open trees as well as some tighter lines that

the advanced person will enjoy. If it’s too much, you can always go back to the more open parts of this trail. On a powder day, these are great, but you should know that you won’t be the only one who knows this.

3. ORE BUCKET: RATING: 83 These are not very steep, but there are many trees with nice and

easy lines for the advanced intermediate and up. This area is not very busy so the snow usually stays very nice in this section. There are many small trees in this area, so the beginner tree person might feel more comfortable here.

4. PTARMIGAN: RATING: 69 Ptarmigan has lots of little tree shots that will be good for the

advanced intermediate and up to get the feel for getting near trees but not in a forest. There really aren’t many trees in this area, but as I said, this is a good place to teach varied terrain with small tree pockets you can go in and out of.

HInTs On GETTInG aROUnD1. Always take the singles’ line if available. You ride to the ski area

together, you eat together, you live together, why ride the lift together? Meeting other people doing the sport you both love makes for a fun and different chair ride. Singles’ lines are great.

2. When busy, stay away from the bottom of Peak 8 and Peak 9. Stay at any of the other chairs and do the runs off it repeatedly. The thing about Breck is that there are many traverses that can be a pain, and time consuming. You should find a section and spend a couple of hours there.

3. Do not eat lunch between 11:00am and 1:00pm, when everyone else is. Go skiing during that time and find shorter lift lines.

4. When is the best month to ski Breckenridge? Come in the springtime after March. April is the best month since the crowds are extremely light, the mountain is 100 percent open and the weather is amazing.
