The Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council (CMSC) is an umbrella

organization comprising 70 ski clubs that reach thousands of skiers

in the Midwest. Its mission is to promote the excitement and camaraderie

of skiing and snowboarding to everyone regardless of ability, age or

economic background.

CMSC member clubs hail from as far west as Nebraska and as far east

as Ohio. Michigan and Wisconsin are on the north, Springfield and

St. Louis on the south. The majority of CMSC clubs is concentrated in

the Chicago metropolitan area. Run by energetic volunteers generous

with their time and talent, the year-round social and ski activities of each

club are limited only by their members’ imagination.

CMSC has a ski club that will suit anyone’s lifestyle, whether a person

is married or single, a single parent or married with children, over 21

or over 70, a novice or expert skier, is physically challenged, has an

unlimited budget or is budget-minded, is active or just enjoys being

around active people.

Formed in 1957 as a non-profit corporation, CMSC in its constitution

provides for an annual election of officers. Each member ski club sends

delegates to the Council’s meetings. CMSC’s magazine, Ski & Ride Club Guide, is published in the spring and fall. Chicago Metropolitan

Ski Council is a charter member of the National Ski Council Federation

representing over one-third of a million skiers in the United States.

The ski clubs of CMSC and the CMSC trips committee do a great job

putting together economical and fun-filled trips for its members. There is

no guarantee that the conditions will be perfect or that you will not do a

face plant or have a yard sale right below the lift with several of your

friends riding above at the exact time. However, it can be guaranteed

that the volunteers who spend the time and effort in planning an event

really want you to have fun, meet new friends and have the opportunity

to get away from the routine of work and home to relax, with all the

logistics taken care of. All you need to do is arrange payment and show

up for the bus/plane with your gear and follow the crowd. Just don’t

follow them over double black diamond cliffs unless you really want to!

WWhat’s up with the coupling of spring and spectacular?“Springtacular,” coined by Becky Kinney of Mt. Bachelor’smarketing team, captures what any West Coast snow enthusiast knows about the high desert climate of theCascade Mountain Range—unmatched spring conditionsinclude a deep snow base and sunny blue skies mixed with surprise powder days.

Want stats? In May, when Mt. Bachelor’s season winds down, the average annual snowfall is 464 inches. On average inApril you can anticipate nine powder days with an averagesnowfall of six inches per day.* Central Oregon is gifted with300 days of sunshine a year.

Andy Goggins, Mt. Bachelor’s marketing director, termsSpringtacular as “the celebration of the world’s best springseason in Oregon’s central Cascades. With one of the longestseasons in North America, extending through Memorial Dayweekend, Mt. Bachelor considers spring its premier season as a multi-sport vacation mecca. In the morning, ski and ridethe highest resort peak in the Cascades, which offers the most spring terrain in the US; in the afternoon, pursue yournext-favorite sport—mountain biking on over 1,000 miles ofsingle track, fishing the Deschutes River, climbing SmithRock, golfing at one of 30 area courses, or sampling craftbeers from the 15 area breweries making Bend ‘Beer CityUSA.’ And shopping is tax-free.”

Mt. Bachelor spring operations offer over 2,000 acres of terrain accessed by three high-speed lifts with 360-degreeskiing/riding from the summit in addition to all five Bachelorparks and a half-pipe. Lifts and lodges in the West Villagebase area open daily from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Northwest Ski Club Council (NWSCC) members keep theirski bags packed and in use well into late spring. NWSCCdelights in stretching out its ski season with an annual Mt. Bachelor BLAST spring trip, a longstanding tradition.

Linda McGavin, longtime NWSCC board member, remarked,"Mt. Bachelor has some of the finest spring skiing I haveencountered in over 40 years of skiing. You start with an awesome 360-degree view from the summit, and you can skidown groomed runs or Cow's Face leading back to the sum-mit chair, or head into the amazing steeps of the Cirque Bowl,or hit the backside for incredible runs down natural valleys ofspring snow that seem to go on forever!"

Last year marked the inaugural invitation for all National Ski Club members to join the Springtacular extravaganza. The NWSCC annual BLAST was combined with the Mt. Bachelor Springtacular events, thus the “SpringtacularBLAST” was born. All National Ski Club members wereoffered discount lift tickets and lodging for SpringtacularBLAST. Rates were honored a week prior to and a week

Springtacular BLAST turned up the fun dial with a retrotheme and guest appearances from freestyle ski legendsMike Dayton, Tracy Livingston, Dan Herby, Dan Schindler,Thom Brisson, Steve Youngerman and Bob Howard.NWSCC member Lynn Norbury exclaimed, “I watched allthose legends on TV in the ’70s and ’80s and tried to copytheir ballet skiing on 203-cm skis because they made it look so easy and so elegant. I couldn't believe they werestill throwing their best tricks. Amazing. I'mcoming again this year and might even havesome short skis along to try something new.It was a blast to ski with them last year. Weeven did some zip-lining through bumps!"

This year, Mt. Bachelor and NWSCC areextending an invitation for all National SkiClub members to attend the second annualSpringtacular BLAST. Lodging will be offeredat the Four-Diamond Sunriver Resort. TheSpringtacular BLAST will be held Thursdaythrough Sunday, April 25-28. Participants willbe able to ski/ride in the morning and playtheir next-favorite sport in the afternoon.

Sign up by contacting your favorite tour operator or call Mt. Bachelor at 541-693-0957.New this year, three days prior to theSpringtacular BLAST, April 22-24, Mt. Bachelorwill offer a FAM trip for qualified candidates.Participation is limited, so call Mt. BachelorASAP to get on the invite list.

Last year’s theme holds true: “practice yourbackscratcher and pack your one-piece.” Thefreestyle legends look forward to throwing downthe old school moves again and teaching yousome of them. There will be a best retro outfitcontest, an on-mountain BBQ, professionalphotos, and a live-music, footloose-styleSpringtacular BLAST Saturday night party.

NWSCC member Stevie Viaene said, “The2012 Bachelor Blast actually was a blast. We not only had the perfect weather to ski the entire mountain, including that awesomebackside, but we also got to actually ski andhang out with the ‘legends’ - those famousguys from back in the day, and you know, theystill have it going on! It was so much fun to rollout the old neon ski wear and get crazy. Oh,and did I forget to mention the after-party?”

Mark your calendars, keep your ski andboards waxed, pack up your golf clubs,

mountain bike, road bike, kayak, paddleboard, rock-climbinggear, swim suit and hiking shoes. Or you can travel light and rent your equipment once you get there. It’s your turn to play in the NWSCC’s backyard and experience world-famous spring conditions at the Mt. Bachelor SpringtacularBLAST in Central Oregon.

With 12 main ski resorts (actually regions) each consisting ofmany ski areas all on one lift ticket, you would think that therewould be an abundance of ski trip opportunities to be had inthe Dolomites, the Eastern and Central Alps of Italy.

However, it seems like every time a club runs a ski trip there, they go to only two resorts—Cortina or Selve-Wolkenstein inVal Gardena. Why? Maybe it's because they are the biggestand best known resorts in the area. But what about the other10 resorts? The problem, it seems, is that the other resortsare perceived to be too small for one week of skiing, and that they are spread out all over the Dolomites and are notconnected by lifts.

I had been wanting to see and ski these other resorts forsome time to know what they were like, and “because theywere there.” I just didn't know how to do it. Last summer, when I was looking for ideas for a new ski trip for my club, I found a way to ski a number of these resorts on one trip.

While discussing ideas with one of our tour operators, RonBerlind of High Alpine Adventours, he mentioned to me a skiinstructor and guide he had used for skiing around the Sella-Ronda area, Giorgio Peretti. Familiar with the entire Dolomitiarea, he could set up a program, show us how to visit theresorts by bus and guide us around so we wouldn't get lost.

I asked Ron to set up a five-day trip for our group, FleetwindSki Club, using Giorgio as a ski guide, and to arrange theroute and accommodations. After several attempts at variousplans, we settled on a very ambitious program to ski across

the Dolomites from one side to the other (Cortina toObereggen), from resort to resort, and rifugio to rifugio (hut to hut), with small lightweight backpacks holding our clothes, toiletries and other necessities. Our luggage from the previousweek's ski trip would be stored for the five days in Cortinaand delivered to us in Obereggen at the end of our ski journey. From there, we would travel to Munich using a chartered shuttle taxi, spend the overnight at the Holiday InnExpress at the airport and fly home the next day.

The reason I was able to consider such an ambitious programwas that I knew the base core of skiers who would be goingon the trip and their skiing ability. All were advanced skiers

DOLOMITESSKIING ACROSS THE

It’s possible to set up an ambitiousitinerary that allows ski groups to visit

multiple resorts in the Dolomites,Italy’s craggy rooftop.

who had been to Europe on many previous trips and were used to skiingthe very long ski runs there. We marketedthis as a trip for advanced or strong intermediate skiers. Given the programwe had, we could not afford to be waitingfor anyone lagging behind.

The plan worked perfectly. We were able to see and ski seven of the 12resorts, three of them entirely new to us. Mr. Peretti saw to it that we skied justabout all of the ski runs in each of thesenew resorts. We also learned more abouthow to get around the Dolomites andconnect to the other five resorts that wehad not skied. The ski resorts and theskiing were good, the scenery was spec-tacular, the rifugios were very nice (withmodern bathrooms), and the breakfastsand dinners that were included with therifugios were excellent. Giorgio was great.

One advantage of staying in a rifugio on the top of a mountain (besides thebeautiful sunsets) is that you get to makethe first run down the mountain in themorning, if you leave early enough. Theonly thing that did not go as planned was that we were not able to ski on twooff-pistes routes that were planned fortwo separate days due to the lack ofsnow on those particular routes. Thesnow on the marked pistes in everyresort was in very good conditionbecause of the extensive snowmakingand excellent grooming.

Please note that you don't have to be anexpert or advanced skier to do this type oftrip. It can be tailor-made to fit the groups’ability and ambition, from a few short connections and a couple of resorts tomany connections and many resorts. Forexample, you could connect Cortina withthe Civetta area, Cortina with the Sella-Ronda area or the Sella-Ronda area withthe Civetta area, with three days in eachresort, thereby lessening the movingaround and allowing more time to skieach area. Or you could connect Cortina,Civetta and the Sella-Ronda areas withtwo days in each resort; or you could connect........the possibilities are many. All you need is a group of people who get along with each other, are willing tomove around from place to place with aminimum amount of clothes and are looking for an adventure. ❄

OOn January 21, 47 members from 16 CMSC clubs departedChicago for Madonna di Campiglio, Italy. We tried a Saturdaydeparture this year. This helped several in our group, elimi-nating the need to take an extra vacation day on Friday.

We arrived at the Hotel St. Raphael and found a beautifulhotel with Old World charm, located near one of the lifts.

Snow conditions were a concern because Madonna diCampiglio hadn’t seen much snowfall for a long time. But we quickly found that they kept the runs beautifully covered. They not only had state-of-the-art snowmaking and groomingequipment, but their expertise with both exceeded our expectations.

The interconnected ski areas completely surround the picturesque town. From the Pradalago ski lift outside our dining room window we were able to ski all areas and return home without ever having to take a bus. You can alsochoose to use the ski shuttle to start your day at the far endof the ski area or have it pick you up at the end of the dayand bring you home.

The mountains were sprinkled with huts that provided every-thing from cafeteria service to fine dining. The last run of the

day found groups of CMSCers at mountain huts enjoying an end of day beer, wine or a Bombardino – a warm drink made from egg liquor and rum. Many did day trips to Verona and Pinzolo as well as snowshoeing and ice skating. They also used the hotel pool, hot tub and spa. After dinner several groups would stroll thru town, sometimes for thenightlife, sometimes just for the mountain air and the pictur-esque town. Our hotel also provided live music several nights.

After a week in Madonna di Campiglio, 26 of us continued onto Venice. The three-day extension was perfect. Most of usbought the 48-hour boat pass allowing us access to the canalferries across Venice as well as the nearby islands.

We broke into groups for the boat trip on the Grand Canaland toured the Basilica de San Marco, Doge’s Palace, RialtoBridge, Piazza San Marco and more. Hot chocolate hit thespot at Harry’s Bar. We visited the islands of Murano for itsglass, Cimitero for its interesting cemetery and Burano for its lace.

We plan to ski St. Anton, Austria with an extension to Vienna in January 2013. To join us, see our website atwww.skicmsc.com, click on CMSC Events; or call Randy Baustert at 847-622-3968. ❄

IIn one of the farthest regions to the north, in the UpperPeninsula of Michigan, sits Marquette Mountain, a popularwinter sports destination for skiers and boarders from all overthe Midwest. Opened in 1957, Marquette Mountain—calledCliffs Ridge at the time—quickly became a hotspot for wintersports advocates, and it maintains that image to this day.

The city of Marquette, Michigan, and the region surroundingit, is a well-known ski town with avid athletes who live by thelocal motto “Don’t hibernate, participate.” Marquette Mountainis their playground. Located just two miles south of the cityon County Road 553, the ski hill is a true gem nestled closeto the banks of Lake Superior, which is visible to the northand northeast from the top of the mountain.

Marquette Mountain offers skiers and boarders a wide rangeof terrains to enjoy. No matter what skill level a person is at,the mountain provides something for everyone, with easy, moderate and difficult runs to satisfy the beginner and theexpert. With a top elevation of 1,357 feet and a vertical of600 feet, it is one of the Midwest’s highest mountains andone of the most challenging in both Michigan and Wisconsin. It features 25 runs, three chairlifts and one paddle tow, 169skiable acres and an average of 135 ski days per season—not to mention over 200 inches of snowfall annually. Forthose looking to practice their ski jumps and boarding tricks,Marquette Mountain provides three terrain parks with hits, rails and trails for all skill levels. In the coming season,Marquette Mountain expands its backcountry runs, addingseven new trailheads.

The mountain caters to the local community as well as families and even business travelers. Its diverse terrain isideal for the students attending Northern Michigan Universitywho can hop over to enjoy a few runs between classes; orfor families who appreciate its convenience and make weeklyor even daily trips to the slopes; or for those who only have acouple hours to spare after work or during a business trip toMarquette who would like to take part in some night skiing.

One of the most appealing aspects of Marquette Mountain isits accessibility, not just in terms of location but also in termsof instruction. Many visitors to the mountain have never skiedor snowboarded before, or are still learning the ins and outsof the sport. Marquette Mountain offers private ski and snowboard lessons for any age and ability, Monday throughThursday from noon to 3 p.m., and Friday through Sunday,10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Lessons cost $30 per hour; $20 for anextra student or extra hour.) Group lessons are available for$10 per person at 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. Friday through Sunday. The mountain also featuresski schools for kids of all ages, a convenient resource for parents who want to enjoy the slopes while their childrenlearn the basics of skiing and riding.

On top of its elite skiing and boarding options, MarquetteMountain hosts a number of events year round to keep people entertained both on and off the slopes. A number ofclubs, including Marquette’s own race program, hold alpinerace events at the mountain, as well as NASTAR competitions. This year, Marquette Mountain added a few more events, including two rail jams under nightclub-style dance lights—similar to what is done at the X-Games—and a Snow Daysfall festival taking place on Nov. 10.

Another reason for the mountain’s success is its affordable prices. Thecost of lift tickets, lessons, lodging andfood is all family-friendly, making it easyfor groups to take frequent ski trips toMarquette. While there is no lodging on site, there are plenty of nearbyaccommodations located about twomiles away. As far as food, MarquetteMountain has three options for a quicklunch or a après-ski drink: The WhiteWater Cafe, which is now offering a fullsit-down expanded menu; the T Bar,which serves up daily drink specials;and the Back Door fire pit, locatedhalfway down Snowfield trail.

Marquette Mountain’s amenities make it a true oasis, a refuge for locals andthose visiting from larger metro areas.Perhaps it’s the diverse terrain, or the large quantities of snow, or the wel-coming environment, or a combinationthat keeps people coming back everyyear. No matter what the reason, skiers and boarders alike have found a home at Marquette Mountain. (marquettemountain.com) ❄
