With 55 trails and 11 lifts, Ski Apache is the second largest ski area in New Mexico and is known for its casual and welcoming atmosphere that allows for a fun and relaxing day on the slopes. “Ski Town of the Southwest” Red River has been known as the “Ski Town of the Southwest” for decades, but what makes this place so unique is not the “ski” as much as it is the “town.” Nestled right up against the Red River Ski Area is a place so special that skiers and snowboarders continue to come back year after year, generation after generation. Why? There are a number of reasons, but primarily because Red River is simple.

With two chairlifts that leave from the center of town, you’ll find 75% of the cabins, condos, and lodges are within walking distance of the ski area. No shuttle necessary. The less time you spend trying to find a parking space, the more time you’ll spend on the mountain (but just in case your feet get tired, Red River offers a free trolley to get you from point A to point B). Just imagine pulling in to Red River after a long car trip and never having to get back in the car until it’s time to leave. Once shrouded in secrecy, Pajarito Moun-tain Ski Area will be revealing a lot morethis winter.

Perched on the Pajarito Plateau of the Jemez Mountains, just 35 miles northwest of Santa Fe, the ski area was founded in the 1950s by a few top-secret Los Alamos National Laboratory scientists looking for a way to carve some turns. Trail by trail, lift by lift, these volunteers created one of the most unspoiled ski areas in the state.

This winter, the management at Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort will be handling Pajarito’s mountain operations, and the team is dedicated to expanding the mountain’s hours to include daily opera-

tions. Together, Pajarito and Sipapu also unveiled the New Mexico Power Pass, a unique season pass that offers unlimited skiing at both ski areas plus bonus days at over 20 partner mountains.

Lift lines at Pajarito are non-existent, and the alpine views are exquisite. The Classic runs 7 races over the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in January, which include freestyle & classic skiing, snowshoe and combined events races, with chile ristras awarded to top winners. This family fun weekend also includes a costume contest, a race for novices & kids, chile cook-off, yurt & ski tours, clinics, awards ceremonies with live music, and much more.
