Fourth Day Journal August 2019
FROM THE NCA EMMAUS COMMUNITY LAY DIRECTOR
“Open up, heavens, and rain. Clouds, pour out buckets of my goodness!
Loosen up, earth, and bloom salvation; Sprout right living.”
Isaiah 45:8-10
It’s growing season! We have sure seen the clouds open up this year! Have you had some fresh garden vegetables this year? Or do you hide when that neighbor with a handful of garden squash comes knocking at your door? For many years we had such a huge garden that we passed out as much as we could. I’m sure I was that neighbor to some people! I still have that big “Horse” garden tiller, but it’s resting, now that we live in a condo. Often when we pass a large farm, Susan kids me asking if Farmer Mark is back. We do have some tomatoes and peppers and herbs growing in containers on the porch.
Each year in winter I would look through the seed catalogs and look for the right seed to plant. Some of the choices require planting early in the season and starting them indoors, waiting until they are just the right size to go at it on their own. Some could go right into the ground. Preparing the earth and planting the seeds or plants, tending them through their growing season so that each plant has a chance to become just what they looked like in that catalog; Keeping them weed free, watered and fed – were some of my tasks during the year. You don’t know exactly what each will become, some grow well and some may take a few seasons to get themselves started. You just do the best you can and let God do the rest. Isn’t growing our faith just like this? Someone planted, someone watered and tended, someone is watching the harvest!
How about your faith? Is it growing this summer? Are you helping the faith community grow? We have three more weekends to fill to the top this year - a Chrysalis weekend in August, a women’s weekend in September, and at our new location - a men’s weekend in November. Look around the garden you are planted in and see who is ready to experience our weekend encounter. And let’s get those applications in!
We all know this this Emmaus experience works well to feel God’s love and watch how it is growing the church leaders who we share this weekend with! It does seem that many of us have run out of friends to send on our weekends and we need, as a community, to look for additional ways to seek those who we can share this experience with.
Rob Cannon came to me with an idea of having a second Emmaus worship service in a logistically different geographical area from our monthly Ultreya’s in an effort to reignite some of our community that finds it hard to travel south on I-95 on a Friday evening. We are going to explore this idea at our August/ September board meeting and do want your input on this. Please let me or a board member know what you think. A new opportunity to serve! A new opportunity to help pass along the Good News our community has to share and fill these weekends!

FROM THE SPIRITUAL DIRECTOR

The dog days of summer are upon us. Whoa, where did that saying come from. Google tells us that the dog days of summer are the hot, sultry days of summer. They were historically the period following the heliacal rising of the star system Sirius, which Greek and Roman astrology connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck.
As Christians we don’t necessarily follow the stars or worry about being driven by mad dogs and bad luck just because its August. But we certainly have to admit this summer’s heat has certainly cause sudden thunderstorms and a degree of lethargy even in the most heat tolerant of us. These are also days when church and Ultreya attendance tends to drop as people go on vacations, get ready to send their kids off to school, and get that last weekend beach trip in before the school year begins.
And as important as these activities are never forget that your eternal soul still needs care and feeding too. We must remember our daily devotions, our prayer life, our need to worship God even when away from our home. We must remember our need to serve God and others in ministry wherever we might find ourselves these dog days.
As you walk the beach or woodland trails, as you gaze upon summer flowers and unexpected wild life, as you bask in the summer sun, remember the one who provides all of these and so much more. Remember the one who died to give you life. Remember the one whose very Spirit resides within you, guiding you on paths of righteousness for His name sake, empowering you to live your life to glorify God and make His kingdom come.
And when you remember the one who is the author and perfecter of your faith, remember and support the ministries He has called you to. Although there are many worthy ministries to consider I would highlight book bag ministries for those less fortunate than ourselves who cannot even provide simple supplies for their kids to attend school. As we get flooded this August with sales flyers from stores and no-tax days, take a look, pickup a book bag, fill it with paper, pencils, pens, glue all the things a student needs to complete school projects and find a local school or a local church who can deliver these to the needy.
God calls you to worship, to prayer, to study, and to Christian action even in the dog days of summer, even when you are far away from home and home church. Will you listen for the touch of His Spirit in the depth of your soul, will you follow where God leads no matter where you find yourself? Will you be the disciple of Christ God created you to be these dog days of summer.

Summer is here and lets show our love to the youth of our community. High School C-102
weekend is August 15 - 18, 2019. Please help show your love to C-102 team and bugs through
your Agape. Find a team member and pass on the love to them to bring to the mountain. A list of
the team is in the 4th Day Journal this month so you can find someone close to you and spread
the love. If you would like to decorate placemats please contact me and I will make arrange-

COMMUNITY PALANCA
July at our annual BBQ was so fun and spirited! Thanks
to Neal and Jenny and Rob for arrangements of sound and
space and great food/fellowship! NCAE Praise Team led
and will lead again in August. Chrysalis E102 will be on the
weekend with bugs at that same time. Their theme song “Only Jesus” was introduced during the
July Ultreya offertory, and was enthusiastically enjoyed. Prayers and praises for next month's music
and the weekend are appreciated.
Mary, Jesus’ mother, accepted her mission in faith and SANG “My soul magnifies the Lord and my
spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” Humble and willing she responded to the angel’s message with
thanksgiving and praise. She proclaimed His goodness in the face of any fears, and
declared His faithfulness. So many Christian songs lead us into praise and testify our faith.
Let’s keep singing like Mary.

K#8 Sussex 1 State Prison Kairos Team is growing and thriving... Inside Team Members: 37 (largest team ever includes resident servants 'CHAs') (39 Hours Total Training)
First Time Team Members: 11 ~ Support Team Members: 5 ~ Veteran Team Members: 22 Not to mention many additional support volunteers from area church members Disputanta, Trinty UMC. K#8 successfully graduated 28 residents (due to an incident we could not have the full 42) This meant that we had one for one at the tables which was wonderful.
Leaders Weekend Comments:
What a truly blessed experience this was for me to lead the K-8 weekend at Sussex 1 State Prison
in Waverly, VA, April 25-28, 2019. I was truly humbled to have served the Lord this way. His week-
end was a wonderful time for the residents, team, and closing guests! The weekend started off with
many obstacles; we did not receive the full compliment of 42 men on Thursday for various reasons
(Pod in lockdown, poor communication of participant entry list for K-8, etc.). As such, we could not
complete our Thursday program (which carried over to Friday morning). In the end, this worked to
our advantage, as we received more men on Friday morning (by an actual miracle) and now they
could hear the Thursday meditations that were not covered the previous afternoon. We were able
to adjust and continue with all talks and activities for Friday. The weekend was met with many,
many obstacles and challenges such as unscheduled pill calls and meals not showing up when
scheduled. The core leadership team was a true blessing to me with all of the guidance they pro-
vided in making necessary adjustments. The result was completing all activities for the weekend
and graduating 28 men to the Kairos community at Sussex 1. Of note, while we never received all
42 residents for the weekend, the 28 men that participated were there for the entire weekend
(barring the chaos on Thursday). I truly believe that these men were hand-picked by our Lord to
attend K-8. From the start, they were engaged and fully participated. They came with open minds
and hearts and left with the love of Christ in their hearts. Highlights of the Weekend included: Ac-
tive involvement at the Family tables by all family members, several chapel visits where the men
opened their hearts to team and Christ. At Open Mike and at the Closing, there were many positive
testimonies to the power of God's love. I believe as instruments to God's mission for the weekend,
the team to the best of their ability, shared the transforming love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ.
Listen-Listen-Love-Love. We did what we were called to do. On a personal note, this weekend ex-
perience transformed me into a true believer in the Kairos meaning that this is "God's Special
Time." I don't believe there was ever a time on the weekend where we were truly on schedule. Yet,
by the grace of God, everything about this weekend, all talks, all activities, EVERYTHING!!!!, was
completed. This was God's weekend, and I now
understand. All glory, praise, and honor to you my God!!!

When I was asked to be a Rectora (“R”) in 2019, it was humbling,
exciting, amazing, terrifying, wonderful, and worrisome – my emotions
were all over the place. You see, I am one of the few people, probably
one hundredth of one percent, who didn’t have the “Emmaus
Experience” on her Emmaus weekend (E-78, more than 21 years ago).
And it took everything within me to overcome my fear to actually
serve on an Emmaus team. But I did, and throughout my teaming
experiences, I have found wonderful Spirit-filled women (and men who have served as Spiritual Directors)
who turned Emmaus into an amazing blessing rather than an intense disappointment.
So, here I am, the R for E-190, something that I never thought would happen. The theme of E-190 is “Our
God is Greater” with our Scripture verse being I John 4:4: “He who is in me is greater than he who is in the
world.” And keeping with the “He is Greater” theme, we are using “Greater” by MercyMe as our theme
song (makes the weekend easy to remember – plus it has a good beat and you can dance to it).
In thinking about what I wanted to do for E-190, it made me think about the people in my life and how I
celebrate who they are and what they mean to me. I have a thing that I do where I pray for people during
the month of their birthdays. I have a calendar that I use to track their special days, and when those days
roll around, I am praying for them, specifically praying for them, during that special time. And one of the
things that everyone has in common is that we are all dealing with “stuff”. Some of us are dealing with
health issues, and some of us are dealing with financial issues. Some of us have family issues – caring for
elderly parents or dealing with children who have problems with which they are struggling. Some of us
have job issues (that would be me), and some of us even have church issues (sometimes Christian people
can be very Un-Christian). So even though I may be praying about something different for each person, the
one thing that we all have in common is that we all have something that wears us down, hurts our hearts,
brings us low, many times causing us to struggle to keep the faith. Those are the things I get asked to pray
for the most. As a result, on E-190, the message that I want to send, that I want the pilgrims (and team) of
E-190 to remember, that I want you to remember is that no matter what Satan throws at you, no matter what
you are facing in this life, “Our God is Greater” than anything. ANYTHING.
One of the lines in “Greater” reads “Bring your doubts and bring your fears. Bring your hurt and bring
your tears. There’ll be no condemnation here. You are holy, righteous and redeemed.” Yes, we will go
through the difficult times in this life. There will be days where we struggle to get through them. But Jesus
is there, walking that road with us – loving us, strengthening us, encouraging us, and telling us that we are
ok and that He loves us just the way God created us to be – despite those voices that tell us otherwise.
Whatever my thing is – whatever your thing is. Our God is Greater. Woo Hoo! De Colores,

4th Day Testimony—Stan and Gloria Esterline Stan and I have been involved with the NCA Emmaus community for quite a number of years.
Stan’s walk was E 57 and my walk was E 60. I can truthfully say that Emmaus has changed our
Christian walk completely. Stan and I were both brought up in the parsonage. Both of our fathers
were ministers and that said, we were regular church attenders since childhood. We both accepted
Christ as young children and lived our lives accordingly. We loved our Lord and savior and followed
closely to Him. We both encountered Christ on the Walk to Emmaus in a powerful way and I can
honestly say that every aspect of our lives has been changed. Our daily Christian walk became a
victorious one. We began to look at the world through “rainbow” tinted lenses (so to speak).
Emmaus gave us freedom to be joyful and exuberant in our daily walk with Christ. Emmaus gave us
the power to let go of the past and walk triumphantly in to the future. Emmaus gave us the ability to
speak into the lives of hurting individuals and to really empathize with their pain. Emmaus gave us
opportunities to grow and to become leaders, not just in the Emmaus community, but in our church.
It taught us how to “love like Jesus” . It gave us the joy of sending each of our 3 children to
Chrysalis where they bonded with other young folks who loved the Lord.
All that being said, we have had trials during the years we have been associated with the Emmaus
community. Stan lost both his parents, I lost my dad and brother. But the most devastating loss
was the loss of our precious daughter, Karen (C27 Butterfly) , due to a tragic accident. And shortly
after that, the diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease for Stan. There have been some very dark
moments in our years where we called out to God and he sent loving Emmaus folks just when we
needed them the most. They were there the night of Karen’s death holding our hands and loving us.
Our Christian family surrounded us during the dark days, weeks, and months following Karen’s
death. They prayed for us and held us up in prayer. They extended to Stan words of
encouragement during his early days of PD and depression. They helped to revive his spirit and
boost his confidence in himself enabling him to return to the work he loved so much, counseling
and mentoring others.
Stan and I have served on countless Emmaus teams, Chrysalis teams, served on the board and
leadership positions. A few years ago we joined with the leaders of our community when we be-
came an independent community called NCA Emmaus, and helped to rewrite all of the
documents we use today. This community has been our
family and has walked with us on our journey of life. We can
never begin to describe the impact Emmaus has made in our
lives, but it has been tremendous. To each of you we say
“De Colores!!!
May your life be filled with the colors of God’s love.”

stand the role of a board member is to :-
A. Uphold the integrity of the Chrysalis mission as stated in Article II, by providing overall policy di-
rection on issues affecting the Community.
B. Provide the foundation for holding Chrysalis three-day events, training future Community and
Weekend leaders, and coordinating follow-up needs.
C. Keep the Chrysalis community connected to the local churches, schools, and campus ministries.
D. Act as principal spokespersons for the Community.
E. Encourage and facilitate cooperation between the NCA Chrysalis and Emmaus communities.
F. Represent NCA Chrysalis in any legal matters.
In addition to accepting these responsibilities you should also be prepared to commit to attending
the monthly board meetings. Board meetings are held on the second Monday of every month at
7pm at Old Bridge UMC. We have done a complete overhaul of the Chrysalis by-laws - 35
changes. The usual procedure for voting on by-law changes assumes a minor change (maybe 1 or
2 by-laws). We are changing the procedure for the community vote on by-law changes as an indi-
vidual vote on each of the 35 changes would be time consuming at an Ultreya. There will be a url
posted for the changes before the July Ultreya (after the Chrysalis board has approved the chang-
es). We will also provide paper copies. You will be able to vote on each change via the url or via
paper. The results will be announced at the August Ultreya.

2019-2021 Candidates for the Chrysalis Board
My name is Dan Hughes. I joined this community in 1996 when I walked on E75. The journey here has been spiritually amazing. God has led me to team once on Emmaus and 8 times over the years, most recently on C-101 as the Adult Head Cha. I have served both the high school youth and young adults on their trips to the mountain. I also was blessed and humbled to serve on the 2016-2018 Chrysalis board and saw how important it is to the efficient execution of the mission and work our wonderful community does. My heart lies with the young people the community serves and as such I feel called to serve again on the Chrysalis board because I want to continue to make the organization
stronger as we go about the mission of nourishing the youth and young adults spiritually. It is a critical time in their lives and what we do as a Chrysalis community matters, it makes a difference in their future. I would like to thank all of you for your consideration and for the great work you do in this community.
My name is ReAnn Newberry. I have been a part of the Chrysalis/Emmaus community for 10+ years now, walking as a sophomore in high school. I wasn't your typical Chrysalis case, I didn't "get it" when I walked. I loved the people that walked with me and the friends I had made but the experience itself, was just eh. A year later I found myself teaming with a bunch of people I walked with, and I guess that's when you could say I got it. It was in serving others and seeing God move in the people attending that I understood what Chrysalis was about and since then, for the most part, I have been actively teaming. As I have gotten older, and a little wiser. I started to form a passion for youth and young adults, especially in helping them understand
their worth, probably why I am now stuck with the Single Life talk forever. One thing I noticed in our community is that we struggle to nurture our butterflies, we send them to the mountain, they walk, and then I feel as if there is no follow up. Which leads to why I accepted a chance to run for the board. I want to help shape the future of our Chrysalis community, I want to see how we can better collaborate with the Emmaus community, and hopefully unify us as one. Mainly I want to help grow the community for it to be a strong and thriving place for Christian youth and young adults to have a safe place to attend and meet other Christian people to form relationships and find mentors.
My name is Allison Rock. I would welcome any opportunity to help the Chrysalis
program grow. It's not about me, it's about how I've seen Chrysalis open hearts,
help grow relationships with God and begin healing in kids/young adults.

My name is Bryson Frankfort. I’m a rising junior in high school. I currently work as a lifeguard at a YMCA. I am planning on finishing my last two years of high school at Germanna community college as part of a joint enrollment program. I walked Chrysalis 99 and have absolutely been in love with the community since. This community, the teams, the weekend, the people, everything, is a place that I can be myself, and feel loved and accepted. I’m currently teaming for C-102. I want to be a part of the board because I would love to help out the community in guiding it to be the best it can be, and helping it stay as a place where people feel loved and accepted just like me.
My name is Matthew Lehmer, I worship at Gateway Community Church, I walked on C-90 and sat at the table of The Exemplary Individuals Who Strongly Believe In Jesus Christ God And Pizza. My Chrysalis experience was a life changer because before I walked I was in a terrible and dark place of my life. Depression took over my life and I was lost in my faith. Then God showed up for me during the walk and continues to work in my life. I want to serve on the board because Chrysalis has been neglected the past and want to help it grow. Chrysalis is just as important as Emmaus, Kairos, or any kind of organization dedicated to serving others and Christ.
My name is Kelly Boden. I walked E164. After that, I have teamed Emmaus once and Chrysalis three times. I am currently teaming for E190. I am the Age Level and Family Chairman of Prince of peace of UMC. I live in Manassas with my husband and have two wonderful children. When God was calling me to serve, I was approached to come be a part of the Chrysalis board and I believe that is what God is calling me to do right now.
My name is Kayleigh Sullivan. I’ve on the board for the last two year and would love
to continue serving the Chrysalis community. We are making a lot of improvements
and would like to see them through.
My name is Katie Rowe. I have been a part of the Chrysalis community for awhile. I
look forward to helping shape the Chrysalis community.

C102 is excited to be heading to the mountain this month!
Our weekend dates are August 15th-18th. We currently have
13 bugs. Our theme is His Everlasting Legacy, our verse is
Deuteronomy 6:5-7 and our song is Only Jesus! We hope to see
the community for our serenade Saturday August 17th. Community
arrives at 8:15PM and Serenade is set to begin at 8:30PM! Please
help us show these bugs the love! We covet your prayers from now
until we return home from the mountain!
