SNOW MACHINE SAFETY COURSEJan. 8 |0900Age: 18 & olderFee: $10 per person | Participants: Max: 20This course was created to promote snow machine safety and responsibility while out on the trail. All classes begin at 9 am. An informative class followed by a hands-on practical on the operation of the machine. Participants will be issued a Snow machine Safety Card at the conclusion of the course. This course is required to rent snow machines from the Outdoor Recreation Center.

COMPEAUS TRAIL SNOWMACHINEJan. 22 | 0800 - 1700Fee: $75 per person, $10 for additional passengerParticipants: Max: 6; Min: 3Join Outdoor Recreation on a snowmachine adventure to Compeaus Trail in the Chena River State Recreation Area. This trail goes low into the valley, and high in the mountains for some great terrain and some even better views! We will provide transportation, snowmachine and helmet. You bring your lunch, snacks, drinks and cold weather clothing. If the temperature drops below -10 degrees we will try to postpone to a warmer date.

MACLAREN RIVER LODGEJan. 14-16 (Must be preregistered) | 0800 - 1700Fee: $329 per person | Participants: Max: 6; Min: 4Outdoor Recreation will be making two holiday runs this year to Maclaren. The first will be for Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend, the second on President’s Day weekend. This is the perfect getaway and a truly Alaskan experience. This program is weather dependent subject to blizzards, white-out conditions and extreme temperatures. Outdoor Recreation will provide transportation, lodging, meals, snow machines and helmets. You Bring Warm boots, cold weather clothing, hand/foot warmers and a good pair of gloves.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!Outdoor Recreation is seeking volunteer instructors/guides for our outdoor programs. This includes our boating, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, X/C ski, fishing, tours, ATV and snow machine trips. Cost of registration includes short lesson and instruction on the trail, ski boots, cross country skis, poles, and transportation. Be sure to bring warm clothing, snacks, and drinks for the trail. If the temperature reaches below -10, we will attempt to postpone to a warmer dates.

WIW: ICE FISHINGJan. 29 | 0800 Age: Open to women of all agesFee: $65 per personParticipants: Max: 9; Min: 3Join the Outdoor Recreation Team for some Women’s Only Ice Fishing in Alaska’s interior lakes. If you are new to ice fishing, then here is your chance to see how it’s done. ORC will provide transportation, rod and reel, bait, ice fishing hut with woodstove, and the know-how to get you started. If the temp drops below -20 degrees, we will attempt to postpone to a warmer day. An Alaska state fishing license is required for this trip.

CREATING THE AURORA (JAN. 13, 20, 27: 1600-1800)We are so lucky here in Alaska-- we have all the beauty of the rainbow (even at night!). Sometimes, though, the clouds and cold prevent us from seeing the beautiful night sky... So, let’s create our own! During the next three weeks we will be working with all sorts of media to create an indoor Alaskan sky for the Library to be displayed throughout the last few weeks of February and then all of March to celebrate nature’s beauty and Alaska’s birthday. This class is adopted from the presentation by Michele Wiener- Davis with the purpose of teaching people how to become solution focused. This class challenges the old saying, “If at first you don’t succeed try, try again.” When you don’t succeed, try something different! Break the cycle and learn how to do what works.

This class helps parents learn a fun, interactive, motivational game to empower and inspire their kids. Parents learn how to enable their children to set clear goals, complete specific tasks, build positive habits, and earn the things they want!

Care Team TrainingPost Library, 0930 – 1130Focuses on the Care Team’s responsibilities and provides guidance on how to handle issues volunteers could face, such as dealing with the reactions from families. This training is recommended for Casualty Assistance Officers, Casualty Notification Officers and Battalion Care Team Volunteers.

Trauma in the UnitPost Library, 1800 – 2000This training is intended to assist unit leadership, FRG Leaders Care Team Members and key volunteers in knowing how to help Soldiers, Families and the unit when different traumatic events occur within the unit.

The focus of this class is on the different ways people express and receive love. The aim of the class is to help spouses understand the different methods of communicating love.

This group discusses stress and relaxation techniques in order to effectively deal with stress. This course is offered in a series of four classes with a certificate awarded upon completion of all sessions. There are relaxation techniques taught in each session. Every WednesdayAnger Management, 1500 - 1630Series of group lessons and discussion on anger origins, understanding anger, characteristics of individuals with anger problems, expressions of anger, causes and solutions, including training for improved communication skills and relaxation methods.

Every Thursday in JanuarySeven Habits of Highly Successful Army Families, 1130-1230So you have 2.5 kids, a home, a dog… and combat boots. HOOAH! Being a member of the Army Family poses a unique set of challenges. This course is based on Stephen R. Covey’s No.1 bestsellers, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families. Topics include: The Basics, Habit One: Being Proactive, Habit Two: Begin with the End in Mind, and Habit Three: Put First Things First; (Habits 4-7 continued in February).
