With changing the names of the gyms to fitness centers in 2014, also came changes in the facilities as a whole. The goal of our fitness centers has always been to maintain recruitment, retention and resiliency of the service members; keeping them mission ready. Now we have the opportunity to keep their work outs fun while creating a safe environment. And if you think the fitness centers and their services are only geared toward the service members, think again! We want to ensure we have programs for all of our community, including family members, veterans and retirees. All you need is an ID card and your access is granted to these ultramodern facilities. You can even bring up to two friends per ID for the experience!

Victory Fitness Center (formerly known as Gym #3), Gordon Fitness Center (formerly known as Gym #4), Cyber Fitness Center (formerly known as Gym #5) and Warrior Fitness Center (formerly known as Gym #6) have all been kind to the idea of keeping fitness fun and free. Our Fitness Director, Randy Taylor, has a staff of managers to ensure the fitness centers stay fresh with ideas and are properly ran. Victory’s manager is Ms. Lula Ray, Gordon’s manager is Mr. Brian Steele, Cyber’s manager is Ms. Crystal Langston and the manager for Warrior is Mr. John Graham. All managers are well equipped with certification in personal training and/

or equipment to give instruction on how to properly utilize equipment and exercise. We’ve recently brought on Josh Woody, our Fitness Coordinator, to run programs that we now offer for free. Be sure to join us for the Lunchtime Express Workout and much more.

Each of the fitness centers offer saunas, locker rooms with changing areas, showers and lockers to store items on a daily basis and at least one room with free weights and cardio equipment. However, some fitness centers have amenities the others don’t. Each facility is geared toward a certain type of fitness. Depending on the type of work out you are looking for will depend on the fitness center you should visit. Keep reading to see the amenities each facility offers!

Victory has a strength room, cardiovascular room, weight room, racquetball court, and equipment that can be issued for use. The basketball/volleyball floor has been converted to house equipment to conduct Cross Fit and Combative Instruction. A Java Fit has been added to the facility and will soon be expanding and changing the Café name to Victory Lift-A-Latte is in the near future.

Gordon has a racquetball court, free weights and strength room, cardiovascular equipment, an aerobics room, nautilus

room, spinning room and massage therapy rooms with certified masseuses. Gordon also recently updated the menu of Java Fit and will be changing its name to Lift-A-Latte in October of this year. Java Fit offers a vast menu of energy food, protein drinks and much more. Gymdog Fitness takes care of the many group fitness instruction classes while personal trainers are offered through Trainers-2-Go.

Cyber and Warrior have a weight room, which consists of strength and free weights, cardiovascular, basketball court,

volleyball court, an equipment issue room and racquetball courts. They both have gymnasium floors and fitness areas. This is the place to be when you are looking for a pickup game of basketball!

Ultimately, there will be more changes as time goes on. If you have an idea or suggestion of something you would like to see at one of the fitness centers, please don’t hesitate to contact Randy Taylor via email at [email protected]. Also, don’t forget to leave a NICE comment at www.fortgordon.com.

SCHOOL SAVINGSAs summer begins many of us want to forget about school and think of the fun we will have with friends and family! We do this by going to the beach, hanging out at the pool, and seeing movies. But for many of us, school is still on our brains. Specifically, college – that monstrous beast that we must prepare for. For four summers we think about where to go, how to get there, and the biggest question: HOW TO PAY FOR IT.

When looking at the dramatic rise in college tuition and fees, they have increased 1,120 percent since records began in 1978, (it was $ 2,587 per year) with college on average now costing $53,138 a year, according to Bloomberg. With such a hefty price tag, many of us teens begin to think about financial aid and student loans. To reduce these loans, which according to US News can be an average of $30,000, we can do a couple of things over the summer: SAVE and GET A SUMMER JOB!

How much you save is dependent on the amount of effort put into it. Saving could be from just saving a nickel a day to more than ten dollars. Though it seems crazy to save over the summer and sounds super hard; the reality of the situation is that it is quite easy. For example, let’s say you eat a Big Mac meal from McDonald’s daily. If it cost about $5.99, over three months you could save approximately $551.08. That is how simple saving is; by taking away something as simple as a fast food restaurant meal for three months, you could get yourself a tidy sum.

If saving is not your forte, than maybe consider getting a summer job. Though many of us would not think of working during summer, it is a great way to earn money. Jobs could consist of being an employee at a local ice cream shop, restaurant, or even at the pool as a lifeguard. What is great about a summer job is that you get work experience without having to deal with all the pressures of school and can usually structure your schedule so that you can have free time to do summer activities. The advantage to a summer job is not having to remove anything from your everyday activities to save money. You can get a lifeguard job at your local pool. Work Monday through Friday at $10.25 an hour, 6 hours a day. You would make approximately $307.50 a week. If you saved ten percent each week for 12 weeks, by the end of the summer you would have approximately $369.00 of the $3690 you’ve made total.

Whatever you decide to do this summer, I would recommend doing one of the two things above; so when school does start again you have your own money to put toward college, a trade school or whatever you decide. Most importantly, be sure to have fun this summer!

This year’s School-Age Services (SAS) Summer Camp will run differently than in the past. This year camp activities will take place from 9am-4pm. During that time the children will be in groups of 30 and will be with assigned staff. These groups will have activities, field trips and more together from 9am-4pm. During lunch time, from 5:15-9am and from 4-6pm, children will enjoy open activities. During these time frames, the children won’t be in set groups.

CYSS Family Child Care (FCC) offers both on- and off-post care for your child. This home setting care is beneficial to families. FCC providers are certified and qualified to care for your child. The providers receive the same training as center-based providers and attend additional training as mandated by the state. FCC offers a wide range of hours to include 24-hour care for parents with extended work schedules. FCC has a smaller setting environment and the providers live in your community. Please contact the Fort Gordon Family Child Care office today at 706-791-4440/3993, and let us start you on the path to great child care!

Those interested in becoming a FCC Provider can attend orientation on Thursdays at 1:30pm at the Parent Central Services conference room, Bldg. 44401.

The Before & After School Program is back – starting August 5th. Check to see if your school is one of the schools we provide transportation to. Transportation to and from school is included in the Before & After School prices.

REVIEW - Fort Gordon Run Series

The 8th annual Fort Gordon Marine Mud Challenge held May 16, 2015 may not have been the tidiest event, but it continues to draw a growing number of fans. The event had about 6,000 attendees and 2,000 participants, which included about 400 children. It’s always a great family event, consisting of 30 obstacles over 5 miles for the adult course and 10 obstacles over a mile for the children’s course. Hope to see you next year.
