FACILITY FOCUS

People wait for it all year long; the smell of sunscreen, the warmth of the sun and long days filled with fun in the sun. Memorial Day weekend marks the “unofficial” start of summer for most people which means barbecues, outside adventures and finding the easiest way to cool off. For the Fort Gordon community, this means heading to Courtyard Outdoor Pool.

The Courtyard Outdoor Pool – located next to Teresa’s Mexican Restaurant – is a multi-million dollar facility that provides fun for all ages. The facility received a dramatic and necessary face-lift nearly three years ago. The once “L-shaped” pool has been transformed into a state-of-the-art facility that includes two 1 meter diving boards, beach front entry, an exciting slide that turns a full three times, and a baby pool. The park also includes a new patron favorite, a 20 feature splash park that may not have any standing water but will help keep you cool on the hottest of days. Another

new feature is the Tiki Hut Snack Bar which has a variety of food items for purchase such as hot dogs, pretzels, nachos, and ice cream.

The outdoor pool is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. The pool is closed every Wednesday for pool maintenance and is open to all active duty military, family members, DOD civilians and contractors to enjoy. All guests must show a valid ID to enter.

The new design of the pool and the creativity of the Aquatics team has allowed for new and exciting programming. The Aquatics Program has added two new programs to

their calendar; Splish Splash Story Time and Dive-In Movie Night. Splish Splash Story Time is a special event held in conjunction with Woodworth Consolidated Library. Geared towards kids six years of age and under, the Aquatics team presents a story and water safety presentation before releasing the kids to the real fun- uninterrupted play time in the spray park! Also added to the summer programming is the very popular Dive-In Movie Nights. Patrons are invited to bring their floaties and rafts to enjoy a family friendly movie – right from the pool! The Dive-In Movies are very popular since it puts a unique twist on something people do all the time – watch movies! “We wait until the sun goes down and our guests can watch the movies right from the pool,” Jessica Todd, Manager of the Courtyard Outdoor Pool, explained.

The Courtyard Outdoor Pool is available for rentals for birthday parties and other gatherings. Guests can reserve a tent during

the facility’s operational hours for $15 per hour, plus the cost of swimmers, or they can reserve the entire park after hours for $150 for a minimum of two hours. Either option for rental offers a great opportunity for any size group.

Fun in the sun isn’t all the Aquatics team does. Their biggest focus, which occurs all year long, is water safety and they offer several programs and services to support this. “Swimming can be and is a lot of fun, however it creates serious risks that people need to be aware of and prepared for,” stated Todd. The Aquatics Team provides American Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructors that teach classes for all age groups and swimming abilities. Group and private lessons for both adults and children are offered as well. “Our instructors work with people of all ages and abilities. They are professional and knowledgeable and have a lot of pride in what they do. It shows too by the amounts of repeat students

and new students who come in from word-of-mouth”, Todd went on to say.

The Aquatics team also works with military organizations on Fort Gordon to help facilitate, schedule and train soldiers in their water safety needs. The most common course the team helps with is Combat Water Survival (better known as drown proofing). Participants of these courses are taught life saving skills should they ever be in danger of them. During the course, individuals practice using their uniforms as floatation devices, treading water, and removing their equipment to save themselves.

“We have an incredible team,” Todd boasted. “With the amount of programs, classes and services that we offer, it wouldn’t be possible without a professional, versatile, and highly trained team. We are able to offer quality programs and outstanding customer service thanks to them.“
