HydraulicAdjustmentThe hydraulic wedge adjustment package for flat die seat presses hasstall relief capability. While using more of the shut height than the dieseat plate that it replaces, the hydraulic cylinder driven wedge providespositive adjustment The cylinder has a zero leakage piston and specialvalving to lock in the wedge position. The bottom bolster is bolted to thebolster plate that is held down hydraulically by 4 integral cylinders Thisallows quick, simple pushbutton operation for the adjustment The ad-justment position is indicated by a digital display. Positive seals on bothsides of the moving wedge forms a large area that can be pressurizedto free the wedge allowing it to be retracted in the event of a stall.

FORGING PRESSDESIGN FEATURESTO ENHANCEQUALITY ANDPRODUCTION. . .

At Ajax, fresh concepts in forging technologymean production versatility and reliability.Design technology in the die area is aimed atminimizing costly set-up time and enhancingforging productivity Ajax offers a range ofdie height adjustment systems, all with inte-gral wedge locking, for flat and wedge dieseat presses, plus standard knockouts andoptional auxiliary systems to suit nearly anyforging requirement

HYDRAULICCYLINDER

ustmentThe top wedge adjustment allows the top bolster to be adjusted verti-cally by means of a large area steel wedge located on the face of theram. The wedge acts directly between the ram and the top bolster pro-viding up to 1/4" of adjustment The ram mounted adjustment mechan-ism remains relatively free of forging scale. Top adjustment is ideal forautomated transfers where the bottom die height must be fixed. Also,it provides for shut height adjustment in a press with a flat die seat

Air ustmentThe air actuated bottom wedge utilizes a pneumatic impact wrench toprovide the torque necessary to move the bottom wedge. The wrenchdrives a screw backed by a large thrust washer Two pneumatic cylind-ers act to assist the impact wrench in adjusting the wedge position, andthen take up the back lash in the wedge-screw drive after the adjust-ment is complete.

Hydraulic bottom bolster unclamping eliminates the hold down bolts forthe bottom bolster. Hydraulic cylinders acting on the front and rear ofthe bottom bolster hold it securely in place. The front cylinders arelocated below the die seat to allow the operator the maximum work-ing area

The combination of the air actuated bottom wedge and hydraulic bot-tom bolster clamping provides quick, automatic pushbutton adjustmentof the shut height The shut height adjustment position is indicated by adigital display.

FirstStationBilletA variety of first stage billet feeders, either hydraulically or pneumat-ically operated can be provided to move the heated stock through theside window of the forging press in the correct orientation. Flexibilitywithin the feeder mechanism allows the heated stock to be placed atthe first die station either upended or laid flat. The interconnecting tran-sition chute feeding the heated stock to the feeder fingers monitorsover/under temperature and double billet A reject gate is provided toeliminate billets which are not within temperature specification andevens out irregular supply of billets.

Mounted in the side window of the forging press, the unit is fully safetyinterlocked with the press control system. Consequently, it provides areliable and flexible forging aid to ease operator fatigue and increaseproductivity

DigitalBearing temperature monitoring of the five critical bearings (the twopinion shaft bearings, the two eccentric shaft journal bearings and thepitman bushing) is by means of iron-constantan thermocouples utilizingmeter readouts. When an overtemperature condition is sensed, analarm sounds, and further cycling of the press is inhibited.

Electronic load monitoring utilizes bolt-on strain gauge transducers witha digital readout device to continuously monitor the forging loads. When the load exceeds a preset value a warning signal is given (warn-ing light and/or horn). The overload signal can also lock-out additionalcycles of the press.

Flywheel speed monitoring utilizes an electronic tachometer, a mag-netic pickup transducer, and an indicating meter to show the flywheelRPM. The slowdown of flywheel speed during a forging cycle is directlyrelated to energy consumption, and excessive slowdown is detrimentalto the press drive motor. The tachometer can also be used to preventstarting a cycle of the press unless the flywheel speed is above apreset level

The press drive motor ammeter displays the motor current on a con-tinuous basis. This is indicative of the work required for a forging blow. Also, the motor idle current is related to the condition of the press drive. The ammeter can be arranged for checking each leg of the threephase power.

The above monitoring systems can be furnished with strip chartrecorder(s) which give a permanent record of the various conditions.

A self-powered transfer system can be provided on Ajax forgingpresses to automatically advance the forgings between operations.Ruggedly constructed, its innovative design minimizes the number ofmoving parts. It provides six basic cam-operated motions. All operat-ing cams are mounted on a single shaft, eliminating bevel; gears andassociated backlash. The entire working mechanism can be easilyremoved. Safety features include a monitoring system which stopsthe press automatically upon any malfunction.

Ajax forging presses are available with electronic systems capable ofmonitoring virtually any press function. Ajax engineers will design a sys-tem to your specific needs that can maximize up-time by indicating faultlocations or malfunctions without the need to physically inspect themachine. Systems are available to provide visual as well as recordedcapability. Typical monitoring includes flywheel speed, bearing tem-peratures, tonnage or number of cycles at a specific tonnage, partscounting, motor speed and current draw as well as other operatingparameters. This is technology of the future, here today on Ajaxpresses, to help you produce forgings economically.

TimeDelayedRetractionBottomKnockoutsThe standard knockout mechanism provides the desirable mechanicalkick to lift the forging momentarily. The delayed knockout will hold theknockout pins up for a pre-set time and control the rate of fall back. Thisfeature allows the user to match the knockout cycle with operator pro-ficiency, minimizes fatigue and contributes to improved die life. Thissystem also allows for manual operation of the knockout without theneed to re-cycle the press.

AirOperatedKnockoutAn independent totally air operated knockout is also available for thoseforgings which require an extra long knockout stroke. This system isnormally custom designed to meet customer requirements.

SPECIAL BOLSTERS

BolsterwithHydraulicallyUnclampedSub-BolstersBolsters incorporating a hydraulically unclamped sub-bolster pack forquick die change is offered as an alternative to standard Ajax bolsters.

Engineered to offer maximum efficiency and flexibility for maintenancecrews during die changes the bolsters provide the quickest diechangeover time with a minimum amount of physical effort. The sub-bolsters can be inter-engineered with proprietary sub-bolsterremoval packages and incorporates die clamping for circular and rec-tangular multi station dies. The bolster assembly is engineered to workwith complete walking beam automation or first stage feeders and canbe designed to meet an individual customers specific needs.

KNOCKOUT SYSTEMS

MultiplePinBottomKnockoutSpecifically suited for automatic forging applications, this knockoutuses a lift beam that has a parallel motion which produces exactlythe same movement in every ejector pin. Any reasonable number ofejector pins can be provided in the frame along the left to rightpress centerline.
