Wishing all our readers a very happy new

year and may we give individual andcollective expression to our new year

    resolution in addressing the Education

    Challenge. I have a wish-list of interesting

challenges which I am confident that my

colleagues in IL&FS Education will pursue

    with renewed ideation and intellectual

    vigour

The current generation of learners are

'digital natives' as compared to the older

generations of 'digital nomads'. Given this

aptitude and appetite for technology (of

our learners), how we treat ICT in theclassroom deserves more respect than an

accidental integration at best, and a forced

intrusion at its worst. Probably ICT enabled

pedagogy is more a challenge to teachers

than the technology itself . So how do our

teachers navigate shifts in classrooms to

get more out of technology to deepen

insights into Science, research andinnovation at the school level itself? We

also need to design elegant programmes

for knowledge delivery by using shared

resources on the internet or in an off-line

mode, given the present temper of the times

There is a need to create wholesome

models which extend quality education not

just to private school-going learners but to

the marginalised and those studying in

Government schools as well. And while

many initiatives around this objective are

truly exemplary, many times these aresingular achievements on a small scale.

And while these establish good practice

    a n d a r e i n s p i r a t i o n a l , w e n e e d

transformative action which works on a

scale with speed and quality and is outcome

    oriented

IL&FS Education is committed to these areas

of educational improvements through itswork in Government and private schools. We

    are extending school and curriculum

    boundaries through progressive pedagogy,

    community based education, life skills,

    c o m m u n i c a t i v e E n g l i s h , r e a d i n g

    programmes, technology platforms, school

    enrichment programmes and mobile

solutions, impacting 13 million students and

teachers in ~28,000 schools in the country

As long as we all continue to execute our

programmes with fidelity be it in capacity

creation of teachers; defining, achieving andmeasuring quality outcomes; and integrating

the less understood dimension of technology

in the classroom with flair and immediacy, I

am hopeful we will inch closer to improving

    educational standards in our country

A new year, new resolutionsand new hopes...

    K-Class speak

The greatest myth of our times is that technology is communication and the number one benefit of Information Technology is that

it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative, productive, learn things they couldn’t learn earlier, in a

nutshell it is all about potential. K-Yan, The vehicle of Knowledge is a centre for educational innovations and one of the core

technology components of K- Class. This, along with ICT @ Schools is in sync with the 12th Five Year Plan whose objective is to

make quality education available, accessible and affordable to the target population in the age group of 6 to 18 years

K-Yan, is a multipurpose digital teaching-learning device which integrates a capability of a high end computer, projector, built in

Wheeling computer education in rural India

Digital Duniya – Computer Education on Wheels:  CSR initiative of

IL&FS Transportation Network Limited (ITNL), Digital Duniya was

started 4 years back with an aim to introduce digital education to grade

5-8 students in Government schools where computer education was not

accessible. IL&FS Education is implementing this mobile computer lab

programme through 5 buses in Moradabad, Bareilly, Khed Sinnar,

Pune-Sholapur and Jharkhand for ITNL; and is also implementing it

under Oil India Ltd (OIL) CSR in Duliyajaan, Assam through 9 buses

Fun and Learning in Digital Duniya: The curriculum involves learning

through gaming and utility software. Some ideas from Digital Duniya that

other schools could implement are: Tux Paint to explain water cycle,

cycle of ecosystem, geometric shapes etc

    Digital Duniya

Community reciprocating our efforts in Education for greater reach

The community from Dhule District, Maharashtra, have

demonstrated a lesson in ownership of their children's education.

Convinced that technology in education is a catalyst for a positive

impact on their children's learning, 40 villages took the initiative to

collect funds from farmers, teachers and parents for purchasing

K-Yans with multimedia Marathi content. In this way around 50

schools were able to purchase K-Yan with community

participation. Each of the school principals & teachers themselves

have contributed Rs 3000-5000 for this. Education Of ficer at

Dhule Zila Parishad (ZP) for Primary Department Mr Mohan

Desale has been supportive & has contributed Rs 1000/- from his

own pocket to each of the 50 schools. The 1st school to initiate this

was ZP School, Indave where the Principal Mr Gavit & his

teaching staff actually collected Rs 100-200 from ladies workingon farms towards the initiative. A leading institution from Mumbai

has supported a lot of schools with a small percentage of the cost

of digitisation. Dhule is the only district in Maharashtra where 50

ZP Schools were digitised at one go through this initiative of the

Hoping to see a four leaf clover for a good

luck charm? Fibonacci told us several

centuries ago why chances are we won’t  -

the number 4 is not part of the Fibonacci Sequence!

Some ideas that have reframed epistemological

foundations have brought about a transformative

change in the way we view and transact with the physical

world the Fibonacci Sequence is one such idea where

nature and Math, two awe-inspiring worlds of their own,

are mutually complementary. The world loves ideas :

re-hashing existing ideas, dreaming alternative ideas

and innovating around the bigger ideas. The 'idea'

journey in our classrooms can all start with inquiry based

    learning

Exploring the Fibonacci sequence in the environment

    around us - leaves, flowers, fruit, phenomena etc;

    observing, questioning, predicting/hypothesising,

invest igat ing, understanding, explaining and

constructing our own conclusions can help in extending

the appreciation of Math in an intimate way. True to the

inquiry tradition, learning activities linked to the

Fibonacci sequence can be r ich in content,

(mathematical reference in this case) and can integrate

Math with natural Sciences, ICT and arts to name a few,

and projects can be researched and designed by

teachers. Further, it will encourage learner groups to

spread out beyond the classroom; and can provide

suf ficient opportunities to students to work at divergent

levels, given their learning styles and learning levels

Most teachers themselves have not had an experience

of inquiry based learning and so may find the process

restricting initially, but with iterations, training and

research this practice could be mutually rewarding for

    students and teachers

    Fibonacci Rectangles

Complete the Fibonacci sequence below (try to do it without help!):

    0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, __ , __ , __ , __ ,

Let's draw some rectangles using these Fibonacci numbers

The interesting thing about making rectangles like this is that the ratio (the number that shows how the sides relate to each

other) stays the same, no matter how big the rectangle gets. This ratio gives us rectangles we call the “Golden Rectangle”

because they are said to be the most beautiful rectangles to look it. The ratio is called the Golden Ratio
