There’s a new sheriff in town, well actually, a new police chief. Kevin Maguire is the new director of Simmons

Public Safety. Chief Maguire arrived here mid-October and has made a seamless transition. Prior to Simmons, he was the Director of Public Safety of the Mass

Convention Center Authority (MCCA) for 7.5 years, which consisted of overseeing 4 campuses, 3 in Boston and

1 in Springfield, MA. Before that he spent 4.5 years as the Police Captain at Northeastern University. According to

Maguire his love for urban university policing sparked him to return to a college campus and Simmons seemed to

be the ideal fit. “I love working with students, faculty and staff,” said Maguire. Since his arrival, students are already seen a lighter side of him serving as

judge in RHA’s Simmons Rockstar and Illumination Celebration.

Maguire recognizes that job is

not always fun or popular but he says he wants to figure out ways to make Simmons a more safe and enjoyable

place for all. He is also enthused to continue to harness a working relationship with Residence Life, since much of the work goes hand and hand

with regards to students. “You’re never alone, we work as partners,” says

Maguire. He plans to have training sessions in conjunction with Residence Life that will address potential incidents

and work on the appropriate responses.

When the Chief isn’t working he enjoys spending a considerable amount of time with his family

particularly his two daughters. As much as his daughters share the joy of their father's company, they also enjoy other

perks as well, "I’m the wallet in the ride," Maguire joked. He also enjoys biking, hiking, and physical fitness in general. “I

work out about 5 times a week.” He is also starting to learn photography after recently purchasing a new camera. Maguire is avid Boston sports fan

particularly the Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics.

To those who haven’t gotten the memo: Winter in Boston is cold. Whether it is the blistering winds, the ice that escapes salting, or the slush on street corners, Bostonian Winter will wage war against your body heat. To survive with your ears intact,

sometimes you need a refuge from the elements while putzing around the city. Fear not- there are countless cafés with a mug of coffee waiting for your numb hands.

~Caffe Vittoria, the North End on Hanover Street

http://www.vittoriacaffe.com/

Don’t let the giant cigar outside keep you from the first Italian café in Boston. Inside the gold-paneled interior are the best cream puffs and Grappa you can find in the North End, the hub of the Boston Italian Community. If you’re a cannoli snob, Mike’s

Pastry’s is right next door but you trade the relaxed “I have all day to drink this one cup” atmosphere for a hectic and sparsely seated locale. If you’re in the Vittoria on a weekend evening, be prepared to be serenaded by violins and accordions.

~1369 Coffee House, Central Square by the Central T-stop http://www.1369coffeehouse.com/

While not THE original 1369, the much-more accessible satellite coffeehouse retains

the same hipster vibe as the original in Inman Square. A wide breath of teas, free Wi-Fi, and the ubiquitous collection of free newspapers that you find in any Cambridge joint makes 1369 Coffee House a great place to hide from the cold for several hours.

A solid date location, 1369 also has plenty of accolades for their service and atmosphere.

~L’Aroma, Newbury Street between the Copley and Arlington T-stops http://www.laromacafe.com/

Newbury Street normally has overpriced specialty drinks or extravagant vegan cupcakes, but L’Aroma is decidedly more down to Earth. The sandwiches are fancy but not foreign, the

desserts delicate but not dainty, and the coffee artisanship is no different than you would find in any of the cafés listed here. It’s also close enough to be a great excuse to take your Nutrition reading out of the residence

hall. A brisk stroll along the art galleries and storefront windows should include a rest stop at this smarmy joint.

~Finale, Beacon Street by Coolidge Corner http://

www.finaledesserts.com/

If you haven’t visited a Finale yet (there’s also one in Harvard Square and the Park Plaza), your weekend plans now include a trip to this gourmet dessert restaurant. The one on Beacon Street is right around the corner from the Coolidge Corner Theater-

what better way to end a movie than with a Molten Chocolate Cake and a Tiramisu Martini? Every carefully crafted dessert has suggested wine pairings, and the “kitchen” has a suspended mirror above it so you can watch as the chef toasts your crème

brûlée. Finale also serves upscale dishes for dinner, if you wish to make a night of gustatory delight.

Simmons College Spiritual Lifeby Leigh Viscomi, RD Dix Hall

The Office of Spiritual Life at Simmons College offers a number of

supportive services and wonderful opportunities for involvement on campus as well as in the greater community. With a very

diverse staff, you are sure to find someone who will be able to assist with your individual spiritual needs. Ailene Gerhardt serves as Director of Simmons Hillel, Jen Roy is the

Chaplain to the Catholic Community, Melinda Weekes fills the role of Chaplain to the Protestant Community, and the newest staff

addition is Ola Aljawhary who was selected as the Chaplain to the Muslim Community. These staff members are available for consultation

and support, regardless of whether your need is expressly spiritual.

Additionally, if you are interested in getting involved with spiritual groups on

campus there are a number of established groups to choose from that you can join. Simmons Hillel, Simmons-Wheelock Gospel

Choir, Simmons Islamic Society, Simmons Christian Fellowship, The Catholic Student Association, and FOCUUS (Fellowship of

Campus Unitarian Universalists at Simmons) are all student organizations on campus that always welcome new members! This is a great way to begin learning about a particular faith

or to continue your own faith development with a supportive group of peers right along side you.

There are also many opportunities to participate in service projects on campus and in the surrounding community through the

Office of Spiritual Life. With many ties to local places of worship, chances to volunteer are plentiful. So whether you are a first year student or a senior just hearing about this

department for the first time, take a moment to learn more!

The Campus Activities Board (CAB) members finished up the Fall semester strong, working to pin down dates and details for an exciting line up for spring semester. With all the clubs and organizations on campus you may be asking yourself just which one is CAB? CAB is your source for entrainment on campus; they strive to bring a variety of entertainers and events to campus to fit everyone’s desire. This group started off the year with just 3 returning members and has grown to close to 20 active folks. They have hosted comedic magician Derek Hughes, comedian Tig Notaro, and singer Steve Moakler. Steve’s performance had Quadside overflowing with every seat in the house taken. Just

this last Friday they hosted Five Times August to a packed audience in Quadside Cafe. If you liked that show be ready for the rest of what they have in store for the Spring! Watch out for more musical acts and a comedian or two to round out the lineup. Augustine, Rachel P, Steve Means, and Chris Ayer just to name a few of the amazing performers they brought back from their shopping trip to the NACA Conference where they heard tons of potential acts to bring to campus. If you’ve never heard any of these names before I suggest you set your fingers to the keys and start checking them out online.

In addition to bringing great talent to your campus CAB will also be continuing there monthly Sunday Craft Corners, Theatrical Thursday’s, and Quidditch on the Quad events. One of the other big undertakings of the groups each year is the Simmons Soiree which will be held this year on February 12th at the Top of the Hub. Tickets sold out in just two days!

Keep your eyes on Sharklink for dates, and details for all of these great events! If you want to be the first

in your hallway to learn about all things CAB become a member on Sharklink; and if you want to be a part of these events and get to meet amazing performers they are always looking for new members. If you see a Simmons student in a bright red or yellow t-shirt with the CAB logo be sure to ask them what exciting event is happening that day!

Take a ride this spring with CAB!
