SONGKET RESTAURANTBuka Puasa Indulgence

by www.chasingfooddreams.blogspot.com

What a feast for the eyes! A truly lovely evening well spent with a plethora of scrumptious authentic delicacies at Songket Restaurant, Kuala Lumpur.

Songket, my first visit, was still clearly imprinted in my memories with their authentic Malay cuisine. Hence, when an invitation was extended to sample their coming Ramadhan Buffet spread needed no further encouragement as I was happy to return for more lovely spread of their chef’s specialities.

Let me take you down an indulgence path to ‘Buka Puasa’ this coming month at Songket!

Songket Restaurant I 03

Songket Restaurant I 04

A very delectable looking whole Grilled Lamb! Yum… moist and juicy without that gamey smell, I had quite a few pieces of this.

Songket Restaurant I 05

There is a Grill Station loaded with seafood and one can pick up what they like to be grilled. I savored clams, scallops, black pomfret and chicken wings that night. There is also their special sambal sauce to go with the grilled seafood. Make sure to get that sambal to oomph up your seafood!!

Songket Restaurant I 06

I love their Beef Satay the very first time I tried it. This time was no difference; it was very tender and well marinated. Another must-have at Songket.

Songket Restaurant I 07

I hit the appetizers first and indulged in their lovely arrays of Fried Popiah, Cucur Udang, Grilled Otak Otak, and Tauhu Sumbat. There was also Sup Pindang, a lightly spiced seafood soup and the must-have Bubur Lambuk, rice porridge, popular especially during this time.

Songket Restaurant I 08

There was also an array of Ulam-Ulaman begging to me with Pecal and Kerabu Mangga. Ulam was a hit with their sambal. Pecal was a salad of beancurd and blanched raw vegetables dressed in a peanut sauce. Kerabu Mangga is for mango fans with its crunchy and sour flavors.

Songket Restaurant I 09

Keledek Goreng, fried sweet potato and Rojak Buah, fruit salad with spicy shrimp paste gravy was decent.

Songket Restaurant I 10

Pandan Nasi Lemak was lightly hued in pale green with a light aroma of the coconut flavored rice.

If you are not a rice fan, there are always noodles like this Mi Hun Goreng.

Songket Restaurant I 11

Let me raved about their Beef Rendang, if there is one thing the chef here does best, its beef! His beef rending is beautifully braised with loads of spices and the luscious texture makes me eat more rice than usual. Sedapnya...

Big prawns cooked ala Masak Lemak Udang Nanas looked delectable. The mild curry was creamy from the coconut milk and the pineapple added a fruity flavor to the dish.

Daun Keledek Goreng with Ikan Masin was sweet potato leaves stir fried with salted fish. Average for me but still cannot resist the salted fish flavors.

Another nicely executely dish was Sayur Lodeh. I love this dish with Lontong and peanut sauce… drool! The dish was super lovely and I wish there was Lontong as I could steal peanut sauce from the satay! Creamy and the vegetables soaked up the gravy nicely.

Songket Restaurant I 12

Another worthy mentioned dish is Songket’s Mi Rebus. Oh-boy… this noodle with its thick and luscious gravy deserves an out-of-this-world medal! I had two bowls and finished up all the gravy which is so addictively beautiful.

Ayam Masak Merah was gleaming red but it was not spicy at all. Creamy with a nice sweetness, this is perfect for kids.

I like this Sotong Sambal Kicap Istimewa. It was jet black and may not look like a crowd pleaser but it was! Lots of squid pieces fried with onions in a black squid ink sauce was a chef’s specialty.

Songket Restaurant I 13

Let’s hit the dessert table with assorted local Kuih Muihs, Mango Pudding, Sago Gula Melaka and loads of fresh fruits.

Songket Restaurant I 14

Check out the artsy plate of Sago Gula Melaka! It’s so striking and beautifully plated with its contrasting colors.

Buah Kurma is a must-have during Ramadhan to whet the appetite!

Ais Kacang was also present to refresh the palate with the icy delight. The buffet also has drinks like chilled Sirap Bandung, coffee and tea to round off the meal.

After our lovely meal, the Cultural Performance show came on around 9pm. I have to admit, the costumes look amazing gorgeous! I kept eyeing the jewelry worn by the dancers which was great pieces of intricate designs. The show managed to mesmerized the entire guest that night with their combination of Malay, Chinese, Indian and even local Orang Asli dance!

Overall, I have to say I was impressed with Chef Zamri’s dishes. His dishes are consistently scrumptious and he managed to capture the aura of traditional Malay cuisine well! Notable dishes are Mi Rebus, Beef Rendang, Satay and Sayur Lodeh. The price for the buffet is considered a great deal with the gorgeous ambience and dance performance with the sumptuous food offered at Songket.

SUPER KITCHENBreathe Fire with Chilly Pan Mee

I have officially stayed in KL for 2 whole years and one thing has never changed – my love for Chilli Pan Mee. Thick or thin strands of handmade flour noodles, topped with crispy anchovies, minced pork, shallots and a perfectly poached egg, ready to be mixed with spicy chilli flakes according to your desire. What’s not to like? Did I say like? I meant Love! The thing about chilli pan mee is that you can customize the spiciness according to your comfort level, but for me, I’d say shoot for the moon. It is not chilli pan mee until you start breathing fire.

In Super Kitchen, every table is equipped with a bowl of fried chillies – dark red, shiny and with an unmistakable fragrance. You can only find this here.

How you eat Chilli Pan Mee is entirely up to you. 1 spoon, 2 spoons or 4 spoons of chilli flakes, you ask? If you have low tolerance for spiciness, I’d suggest you to try with 1 spoon first. Mix everything up well, poke the egg yolk, cover every strand of noodle with chilli and then savour it. These chilli flakes might not look very spicy but my goodness, they are fiery hot! We tried with 2 big spoonfuls and our lips were burning halfway through our bowl. Not to mention beads of perspiration started forming on our forehead, our eyes became watery and our stomachs felt the spicy heat. Definitely not for the faint-hearted.

Also, you might just want to know that the next morning after, there will be some ‘consequences’ if you have a weak stomach, like me. How do you like the idea of getting to know your toilet better? :P Still, all things considered, I love my chilli pan mee.

This shop doesn’t only sell chilli pan mee. If you prefer something soupy especially on a cold and rainy night, perhaps the Curry Pan Mee would be a good choice. The curry was aromatic, thick and coconuty but not as spicy as the chilli pan mee, fret not. This bowl also came with a generous amount of beancurd, fish malls, meat balls, cockles and beansprouts.

Or if you have absolutely no tolerance for spicy food at all, then you can go for the Traditional Pan Mee (RM5.50), although I think it pales in comparison to chilli pan mee. On the bright side, this comes with a whole poached egg as well, together with plenty of sweet leaves and mushrooms.

My second best choice would be the Fish Head Noodles. During my first visit here, I was skeptical about having fish head noodles in a chilli pan mee restaurant. But never judge too soon, for their fish head soup was extremely tasty and hearty. The broth had the sweetness from the fish head, with a hint of milk to mask out the fishy smell. I could go on and on slurping the soup!

For something to munch on, the Fried Fish Fillet would be good choice. Crispy and piping hot, be careful not to burn your tongue with these! Dip them in the Thai style chilli sauce for that spicy touch.

The Thai Style Bean curd was served in a such a grand presentation that it was almost too pretty to ruin it. The bean curd was topped with a generous layer of crushed nuts, sesame seeds and cucumber slices, rendering this dish a very crunchy one. The beancurd on its own was bland but take it with the spicy and sour Thai sauce and a dollop of nuts to make it delectable.

Thai Style Bean curd (RM6 / RM10) Vegetables (RM6 / RM10)

Last but not least, some veggies and Meat Balls to complete the ensemble. These meat balls were sizable and very bouncy, surrounded by slices of fu zhuk (bean curd sheets) and sweet leaves, making this a complete meal on its own.

If you’re in a bad day, have the chilli pan mee with plenty of chilli flakes. I assure that you’ll forget your sorrows, if only for that few minutes while you’re breathing fire.
