From the PresidentWe are heading into a new chili year that includes the 45th Annual Terlingua

International Chili Championship. With our November Trails posting on the Internetbefore TICC, I hope everyone sees this before they leave and is as excited as Iam. If you are reading this after the fact, then hopefully you did not miss any ofthe fun.

In my new role as President of CASI, I am excited to be stepping up, thankfulfor the honor, humbled by your confidence and challenged to be the best that I canbe in leading our Chili Family. Filling the shoes of the many that have served aspresident will be a tall order as they all set the bar so very high. When you see

someone that has served, tell them thanks. My guess is they will be easy to find because most are stillvolunteering.

Overall that’s the great thing about our organization in that it is comprised of doers. Chiliheads as a rulewill jump up and say “Yes, I’ll do it!” My guess is that beyond the 11 current and 3 outgoing directors, wewill have 100, 200, probably more that will volunteer in one capacity or another to make Terlingua the classevent it is. This year, we are going to publish lists of everyone that helped make TICC happen. If youvolunteer, please be sure to get your name on a list. Let us know what you’ve done. It is not an event puton by a few people, but one where many work, so even more can have fun and raise money for many goodcauses. We will publish a list in the December Trails. If you don’t see your name and you volunteered, shoot me an email. We are going to follow up with your name and any others we missed in the JanuaryTrails. It is my opinion that it is far better to thank everyone, even it takes two cracks at it, than to be sowary about missing someone, we thank no one. So, help me out here, let’s all work together and share thecredit.

A big thank you is due to all our sponsors, without whom our event would be far more Spartan and yetfar less beneficial for our charities. The funds you provide are crucial to the year round success of CASIand culminate in Terlingua. We hope all of you can join us. And to our Friends of CASI and Krazy FlatsCharter Members, your participation and funding add the icing to the cake. Thanks! Then we have folks inthe Terlingua area that help us so very much including Kathy Killingsworth and her efforts to secure thewaiver for fires and cooking. Gazpacho chili is just not all it’s cracked up to be. A big thanks to TomWilliams for his work with both securing our beer and wine licenses and our Mass Gathering Permit. Thenas you pass through the gate upon your arrival, thank the Terlingua VFD and EMS for their work both atthe gate and providing medical assistance as needed throughout the week. Many others will be busypreparing the site in advance and helping throughout the week. It truly takes a village to put on our event.

For those that have been chasing points and have secured them, please come to Rancho CASI de losChisos and compete. As always, it should be a great time. Even if you missed getting all your requiredpoints, remember – you are Always Qualified to join us for the fun. For our spectators, you all know abouthaving fun and we thank you for being a part of the event. Your participation as judges in our events ismost appreciated.

With so many activities and so many friends, Terlingua is about the overall experience. It is a time forChiliheads the world over to come for the competition, the excitement and the camaraderie. While only onewill be the new chili champion, opportunities abound throughout the week to win a contest here or theresuch as Sotol Pod,Dominos, BBQ, Wings,Beans and Salsa. Claimsome bragging rights anda few dollars in prizesoffered in many of theseevents.

Bring a friend, a fireextinguisher and even aspace alien, but leaveyour worries behind. It’stime for Chili, Charity andFun.

Ed BlairCASI President

Reflections fromthe ED

The new Chili Year (2011-2012) is well underway. With the New Year, there is a new Rulebook. It isavailable in the Resource Center and can be downloadedand printed. Those Great Peppers and Regional Refereesthat attended TICC and registered as such, each receiveda printed copy of this book.

Please review the new book and make sure that youare familiar with the changes. If this is your first year as

a Great Pepper, a Regional Referee, or an Area Referee, be sure that you have readthe new Rulebook and have it on hand at your chili cookoff. You should have oneavailable to you at every cookoff that you are the responsible referee. It is alwayswise to carry it with you as you attend various cookoffs. As a Regional Referee, itis your responsibility to ensure that all of your Area Referees or anybody that youappoint to cover a cookoff is well versed with the rules and their responsibility.

At each of your Pod meetings, spend some time reviewing areas of theRulebook. This makes sure that your members are familiar with the current rules.Use your Pod meetings as educational meetings as well as your business meetings. If you or your members have a previous edition of this book, please be sure toreplace it.

Do you need a CIS log in? If so, please be sure to send your request to me [email protected]. You CASI membership must be current in order to havea valid log in.

Do you check the CASI blog each weekday? It gives you the latestinformation concerning current CASI information. It is called ED Reflections. Ifyou have information that you want to share with the membership, please send it tome to be posted.

See you in Terlingua!!!

CASI Membership(With a Little Chili History)

At the Great Peppers Meeting in Kerrville, TX this yearCASI Membership Chair Darin Jester reported that atthis time, CASI membership was down from 2010 byabout 340 members. After the meeting adjourned for

lunch, I heard a lot of discussion among those present, about CASI membership.I then recalled another time when a similar thing happened.

The time was 1993, at the Great Peppers meeting in Tucson, AZ when thenCASI Membership Chair, Mike Strack, reported that membership was downthat year by 321 members from 1992. This bombshell also created muchdiscussion, as this number was a good percentage of then CASI members. TheBOD acted quickly to start a membership drive. They did this by challengingthe Pods as to which Pod could sign up the most new and renewals members byFriday of that week of TICC. Robert Bell, CASI President, offered a prize of acase of Cuervo Gold and 10 lbs of limes to the Pod or person who accomplishedthis. I don’t know if it’s a matter of record, but Top of Texas Pod won thecontest, and their top salesman was Gene Shouse, Irving, TX. (Least we forget, this is the same Gene Shouse who, in 1994, donated, delivered to the site atRancho CASI, and supervised the installation of; the commercial flag pole thatflies our flag by the Stage area). I digress. I cannot remember the exactnumber of members signed up by Pods that year but it was close to 250 and inearly 1994, membership reached 900 for the first time.

Would CASI membership have survived and increased without the drive? Most probably, as Mike reported that by Oct 10th, 1993, 195 members hadjoined or renewed and the Pods had accounted for 60 of those. The thing wasour drive brought attention to the Chili Appreciation Society, International at ourChampionship cook off site. A slew of new members and renewals wereobtained there. Which brings me to this.

Shouldn’t we take advantage of what we learned in ‘93 by opening a ChiliAppreciation Society International membership booth at our cook off site atRancho CASI? After all, interest in CASI is at an all time high for the year as

we compete to crown oneof the best Chili Cooks inthe world. We havealmost a captive audiencewho has an interest in theoutcome. Let us also letthem know that CASIalso has an interest in theaudience by offering themthe opportunity to join usas members. The boothmight also take over thesales of decals andbumper stickers. All itwill take is a booth and afew volunteers. Howabout it?

(A special thanks toBruce Stewart, Hurst, TXfor helping remember thepast.)

NOVEMBERCELEBRATION

By the time most of you receive this, the 45th

Terlingua International Chili Championship will becelebrating in the Chihauhuan Desert. However, forthose of you that get the electronic version, there is stilltime to coax you to participate. You have waited allyear for the trip, so it is time to PARTAKE.

This year will be a record year for sponsor participation in the parties, judging and entertainment venues. We now have five full days of fun andcompetition kicking off Tuesday November 1. Every event is underwritten inone way or another by our great group of sponsors. They not only provide cashincentives and product to sample, but most of them make the trip to spend timewith us. The CASI welcome is warm and friendly. It brings out the love thatchili heads have for this unconventional hobby. Why cook in the kitchen whenyou can drive hundreds of miles to the beginning or end of nowhere to partywith thousands of like minded fanatics? This year and next, we are makingmany additions to our facilities at Rancho CASI de los Chisos to accommodateour growth. Our 50th anniversary is just over the horizon. I promise you it will bevery special.

I hope you will join us. Be safe in your travels. Thank a sponsor. And, if youare competing, the best of luck! If you need anything, I will be the nerdy lookingguy with the radio.

Thank you for your support.

Free Quarter Page Adto CASI Pods, State, Regional and

International OpensAs a CASI Pod you are required to put on a pod cookoff once a year. To help

you advertise your pod cookoff we allow each pod to place one quarter page ad inthe Terlingua Trails, each year, free of charge. This ad should run the month beforeyour cookoff occurs. Should you decide that you need an ad larger than a quarterpage we will simply bill you for the difference in price. This ad should not beconfused with the article advertising your cookoff in the "Cooking with CASICalendar" section in the Terlingua Trails. That article will start to run as soon as yourequest your cookoff packet and will run until your cookoff occurs.
