The 2010 season will be the seventh for Val Verhunce since starting the Sonoma State men’s golf program in 2004. He has been head coach of the women’s team as well since its incep-tion three years ago.

With their second straight CCAA championship and the NCAA Division II national champion-ship, Verhunce’s 2009 season was one for the ages. He became just the third coach in So-noma State history to win a national championship, joining Peter Reynaud (women’s soccer, 1990) and Marcus Ziemer (men’s soccer, 2002).

In addition to all of the honors on the men’s side, the women’s squad had a tremendous sea-son, spending most of the year ranked among the nation’s top 20 teams. They won their first tournament and collected their first All-American (Brittany Carrera), all in just their second season of existence.

The 2008 CCAA and West Region Coach of the Year, Verhunce wasted little time turning Sonoma State golf into a national power. The squad made the regionals in its third year, won the region in its fifth season, and the national title in its sixth, cap-ping off an unprecedented rise to the top of the sport.

Perennially ranked among the top five teams in the nation, Sonoma State has already had three players earn a total of seven All-American honors since 2006 and Jarin Todd, a senior on the 2009 national champion team, is a two-time Jack Nicklaus Award winner as the national player of the year.

A PGA Professional with over 25 years of experience and a Class “A” member of the Professional Golfers Association of Ameri-ca, Verhunce has supported golfers in realizing their goals along in addition to providing them with a high level of motivation.

The former men’s head golf coach at St. Vincent’s High School in Petaluma, Verhunce, a proven team player and leader is cur-rently operating at Adobe Creek CC, and Peacock Gap. Verhunce is the owner and director of instruction for the Val Verhunce Golf Improvement Centers. Prior to that, he was the director of instruction at Rooster Run.

An active player in the NCPGA Section and various Pro-Am’s, and a winner of several NCPGA sanctioned events, Verhunce was a collegiate golfer at Texas Wesleyan University and the University of South Florida. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Marketing and currently lives in Santa Rosa with his wife and two kids.

SANTA ROSA, Calif- The Chico State men’s golf team got a little revenge on Sonoma State on Tuesday afternoon by winning the SSU Invita-tional. You see, it was just a week ago that the Seawolves beat Chico at their own tournament, the InterWest Chico Classic. Tuesday’s victory was the second consecutive SSU Invite title for the ninth-ranked Wildcats.

Kevin Horan took individual medalist honors with a 66-70-70—206, holding off Ian Gilley of Rollins College (69-70-68—207) and Jarin Todd of Sonoma State (69-67-72—208).

Chico State edged second-ranked Sonoma State by 14 strokes after shooting a four-under 284 in round three. The Wildcats turned in the best round of the tournament in Round One on Monday, a 15-under 273.

Sonoma State closed out the tournament with a solid 289 to finish at 852. Todd, Keith Rodri-guez, and Ryan Carter all carded even-par 72s on Tuesday.

Despite not getting the win, the Seawolves keep alive their streak of champion or runner-up finishes.

TURLOCK, Calif- Without the services of two-time defending national player of the year Jarin Todd, who fell ill on Monday night, the Sonoma State men’s golf team finished fourth at the Hanny Stan-islaus Invitational in Turlock. Ryan Carter led the Seawolves with a strong fifth place finish on a day where scores were much higher than on Monday.

Todd left Monday’s play in fifth place overall after firing consecutive 71’s. Unable to play on Tuesday, the Seawolves had no room for error and they were stuck with a 75 (Carter) and three 79’s. Those 79’s don’t sound so bad when you consider that just six of the 79 golfers competing on Tuesday shot under 75.

Following Carter’s fifth place finish (74-69-75--218), the Seawolves got a 16th place showing from Tyler Schmuckle (73-74-79--226). Patrick Bauer (78-71-79--228) in 22nd and Jeremy Wen-delken (78-78-79--235) in 36th rounded out the Seawolves’ four finishers.

BLAINE, Wash- In a comeback of monumental proportions, the Sonoma State men’s golf team came from nine strokes back in the final round to win the 2009 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf National Championship on Friday at Loomis Trail Golf Course in Blaine, Washington. It is the third national championship in the history of the school and the first for the men’s golf program.

After an incredible comeback effort on the back nine (Sonoma gained seven strokes on San Bernardino), the Seawolves finally drew even with the Coyotes on the final hole when Patrick Bauer’s bogey bested a double-bogey by CSUSB’s Gene Webster. The ending could not have been scripted better as the Seawolves and Coyotes were paired together and all eyes were on Bauer and Webster down the stretch.

Sonoma would then edge San Bernardino 16-17 on the playoff hole to emerge with the trophy. The Seawolves got four pars and one bogey while the Coyotes carded three pars and two bogeys. The team playoff was played on the 18th hole.

Said head coach Val Verhunce, “I tried to keep it really simple and told them that no matter the outcome, I just wanted them to do their best. That was all I could ask.”

The Seawolves entered Friday nine strokes back and were still in fourth place midway through the round. Verhunce said he didn’t really feel like the team was in contention until the 12th round of the day.

For the third time in the tournament’s four rounds, sophomore Patrick Bauer led the way. The Colfax native finished third individually with a score of 71-72-76-71--290. Two-time national player of the year Jarin Todd finished 12th at 72-76-73-73--294. Jarin’s brother, Janssen Todd was 29th at 76-75-75-73--299. Spencer Shishido (37th, 74-76-77-74--301) and Ryan Carter (55th, 76-73-75-82--306) rounded out the Seawolves’ efforts.

Founded in 2004, the Sonoma State men’s golf team is in just its sixth season. The squad finished 13th at the national championship in 2007 and 16th in 2008. The Seawolves won CCAA titles in 2008 and 2009 and a west region title in 2008.

The Seawolves become the first CCAA institution to win the NCAA Division II men’s golf national championship since Cal State Northridge in 1974 and just the fourth all-time. It is the first win by a California school since UC Davis in 1979. It is also the first time that CCAA schools have finished 1-2 in the national championship tournament.

Sonoma State previously captured national championships in women’s soccer (1990) and men’s soccer (2002).

Gavin Smith of Indiana (PA) won individual medalist honors, winning a playoff hole against Kelbi Lee of Ferris.

The CALIFORNIA COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION has been one of the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938.

The 11-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. Addition-ally, California State University, Monterey Bay has begun its provisional status as a CCAA member. In 2006, Humboldt State departed from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and joined the CCAA

These institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s CCAA-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition.

CCAA members have won 148 NCAA Championships (100 men, 47 women) which is far and away the most of any Division II conference.

The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 68 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University.
