Tennis Facilities

The David V. Wise Center (right) features four indoor courts with a medium-pace polyurethane rubber floor. The Wise Center provides a state-of-the-art indoor facility right on campus, as well as a rain site for matches. Other amenities include a 210-meter indoor track; a 6,000 square foot weight room; state-of-the-art nautilus equipment; racquetball courts; an aerobics/dance studio; a pool and diving well; a performance arena used by the basketball and volleyball teams; and an athletic training room.

The Robertson Tennis Complex (below) features 12 lighted courts divided into four banks of three courts, a state-of-the-art sound system and a U.S. Open DecoTurf surface. The new blue and green surface was installed during the summer of 2009.

Named after 1906 alum Andrew Wells Robertson, the state-of-the-art Robertson Athletic & Recreation Complex encompases the home facilities of the baseball, football, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, and tennis teams.

Frank B. Fuhrer Field, located within the 203-acre Robertson Athletic Complex, was completely renovated in 2006. Fuhrer Field features a Field-Turf playing surface (the same surface used by many NFL teams), stadium lighting, full locker rooms, and an eight lane olympic style track.

Originally known as College Field, the complex was named after Andrew Wells Robertson in 1962 to honor the year he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Allegheny Board of Trustees. Robertson purchased additional acreage along Park Ave. to supplement land originally donated in 1910 by John F. Eberhart. (class of 1853). In addition to donating land, Robertson underwrote the cost of developing the athletic field. A beautiful and spacious venue for intercollegiate athletics, Robertson saw that the natural setting was preserved by having shrubbery and trees removed during construction replanted elsewhere on campus.

In addition, Robertson Athletic Complex also includes one of the nation’s finest outdoor track and field facilities; and an NCAA championship-level cross country course. There are also 102 acres of woodlands, a picnic shelter and trails for outdoor recreation.

Certified as a teaching professional by the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) for over 20 years, Allegheny head coach Jared Luteran enters his 13th season at the College and continues his streak of establishing the Gators as an annual contender in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC).

The Allegheny women finished the 2014-15 season with an overall record of 14-6, which tied the 2007-08 team for the most wins in a season under Luteran’s watch. Sun Mo Koo earned All-NCAC Second Team accolades in both singles and doubles for the Gators, with Sloane Prince joining Koo in garnering doubles honors. The duo of Thomas Manning and Tyler Triolo were honored by the NCAC for the men, who finished the season with a record of 12-9 - Luteran’s sixth consecutive with a winning record. Triolo claimed second team accolades in both singles and doubles, while Manning was named honorable mention for singles in addition to his doubles award.

Luteran was named the 2014 NCAC Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year after leading the Gators to a 15-7 record. Under his tutelage, Patrick Cole ’14 became the program’s most successful player upon graduating, leaving Meadville with career singles (83), doubles (78) and combined (161) victories along with single season singles (26), doubles (25) and combined (51) marks. In addition, Cole earned a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and the NCAC Scholar Athlete of the Year Award while additionally earning a No. 10 ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Central Region rankings, a program best.

On the women’s side, the Gators opened the season with their first Nancy J. Heath Invitational title since 2007, upending Baldwin Wallace and Division II opponent Edinboro en route to the team title. The Allegheny women’s tennis squad ended the season 12-8. In total, Luteran coached five student-athletes to seven total All-NCAC honors.

The 2012-13 campaign saw the Allegheny men erupt for a 10-0 mark in dual matches to start the season, setting a new program record and finishing the season ranked No. 18 in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Allegheny women finished fifth in the conference after upending Ohio Wesleyan and Wooster in the 2012-13 NCAC tournament. In total, six Allegheny student-athletes would earn All-NCAC plaudits as three men and three women made the list, including a third All-NCAC First Team selection for rising senior Patrick Cole, who ended the season ranked No. 22 in the region.

During the 2011-12 season, Luteran’s squads saw success both on and off the court. Cole followed up his 2010-11 NCAC Newcomer of the Year award his freshman year with a second All-NCAC first team selection, one of three tennis athletes between the men’s and women’s teams named to All-NCAC squads. In 2010-11, Luteran’s women’s team ended the season with its first ITA regional ranking in program history as they posted a 13-win season en route finishing third in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) tournament, the program’s highest finish since the 1998-99 season. Luteran earned the United State Tennis Association (USTA) Allegheny Mountain District College Coach of the Year Award after the successful 2011 campaign.

In 2006-07, Luteran was named the NCAC men’s co-coach of the year after the Gators finished third in the NCAC Tournament, the squad’s highest finish since the 1994-95 campaign. It was the first time a tennis coach at Allegheny received the top leagues’ coaching award.

Luteran wasted no time in making an impact at Allegheny. In his first season as the head coach of the Gators in 2002, Luteran led the men’s team to 11 wins and an improbable upset of top-seed Denison University in the opening round of the NCAC Tournament—the first and only time in the conference’s history the fourth seed upset the top seeded team. Allegheny finished fourth in the league that season, followed by a fifth-place finish in 2005, a fourth-place finish in 2006, and a third-place finish in 2007.

Luteran’s squads excel in the classroom as well as they do on the court. During his tenure at Allegheny, he has coached 28 individuals (16 men and 12 women) that have received ITA All-Academic recognition including six men and five women that received the honor multiple times. Three different men made the prestigious academic team all four years on campus. Additionally, the women’s program was declared an All-Academic Team by the ITA in 2006 and 2010. Both the men’s and women’s teams were honored by the ITA for the 2011-12 year, with the men tacking on an additional honor during the 2012-13 campaign.

A proponent of community service, Luteran has also helped the men’s and women’s squads rack up over 3,000 hours of community service over the past 12 years. Luteran additionally earned the 2010 ITA/USTA Campus

and Community Outreach Award for the Middle States Section for community service aimed to benefit the Meadville area.

Prior to arriving in Meadville, Luteran served as the head men’s tennis coach for four seasons at his alma mater, West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC). In his first season with the Bobcats, he led the team to the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) title for the first time in 19 years.

Overall, he guided the squad to a record of 40-15, including two undefeated seasons and a top-40 ranking in NCAA Division II. Luteran was twice honored as the coach of the year in the WVIAC, and he led Wesleyan to the National Tournament for the first time in school history in his time at WVWC.

He also coached the women’s tennis team at WVWC for one year, leading the Bobcats to an 11-5 mark and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. Luteran trained as a player and as a coach under the guidance of Carlos Goffi, former coach of John and Patrick McEnroe and author of “Tournament Tough”.

Luteran graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan in 1998 with a degree in public relations and won three conference titles with the Bobcat tennis team, two in doubles and one as a singles player. He also served as captain his senior year. In addition to coaching, he has served on the national ranking and awards committees for the NCAA and ITA, also leading physical education and outdoor adventure classes.

Luteran currently resides in Meadville with his wife Emily and their two children, son Lucas and daughter Ava.

Coach Luteran picks up 300th Career WinIn his 12th season as head coach of the Allegheny men’s and women’s tennis programs, Jared Luteran picked up his 300th career win on April 17th vs The College of Wooster. The men’s 6-3 win, coupled with the women’s 8-1 victory over the Wooster Fighting Scots gave coach Luteran his career milestone. Luteran began his coaching career by spending four seasons at his alma mater, West Virginia Wesleyan, where his men’s and women’s teams went a combined 51-20. After his 12th season at the helm of the Gator men’s and women’s programs, Luteran is a combined 253-244. In 2007, Luteran won NCAC Co-Coach of the Year for his performance with the Gator men. More recently, Luteran won NCAC Coach of the Year in 2014 after coaching the men to a 15-7 record. During the 2013-14 season, Luteran led the Gator’s to a program high No. 16 ranking from the intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)Division III Central Region rankings.

Gators Earn All-Academic Honors from ITAEight members of the current Allegheny tennis program earned Scholar Athlete recognition by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in mid-July. Five members of the men’s program, seniors Daniel Conroy, Alexander Hurtuk and Samuel Stephenson along with juniors Samarth Gopal and Tyler Triolo earned the honor, while juniors Andrea Brush and Abby Lange as well as sophomore Michaela Thompson of the women’s program were also named ITA Scholar Athletes. Hurtuk picked up his fourth consecutive scholar athlete award, while Triolo picked up his second consecutive award. The remaining men were all first-time recipients. On the women’s side, Brush was awarded her third consecutive scholar athlete award, while Lange and Thompson both picked up their second consecutive awards. For a student-athlete to earn ITA Scholar Athlete status, a player must meet incredibly stringent criteria, including a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale). In addition to the individual awards, the Allegheny women’s tennis squad earned All-Academic Team recogition from the ITA by achieving a team grade point average over 3.20 for the 2014-15 academic year. In addition, the women’s team was awarded with the 2015 William Crawford Team Academic Merit Award for having the highest grade point average for all sports.

Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania -- Allegheny College, Denison University, DePauw University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster -- the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academicstandards.

Significantly, all 10 NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 276 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored.

A member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 22 sports: 11 for men and 11 for women. The 11 women’s sports are the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart.

The goals of the conference express the best aspirations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. Intercollegiate athletics can and should complement academic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have taken an active role in the governance of the conference.

Thirty-eight teams from 21 North Coast sports were represented in NCAA post-season competition during the 2008-09 academic year. The NCAC added two more NCAA Division III swimming championships as Kenyon claimed the men’s and women’s titles. The conference has accumulated 60 national championships since its inception in 1984-85. In the past academic year, 133 NCAA All-America or ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America certificates were distributed to student-athletes from North Coast schools.

The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.
