A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ISAIAH CHAPTER 55: BEGINNING AT THE 10TH VERSE: (Pew Bible page 598) For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress; instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle; and it shall be to the Lord for a memorial, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

HEAR THE WORD OF THE LORD THANKS BE TO GOD

PSALM 92.1-4, 12-15 (A Prayer Book for Australia page 3 We say alternate verses

How good to give thanks to the Lord: and to sing praises to your name, O Most High, To declare your love in the morning: and at night to sing of your faithfulness, Upon the lute, upon the lute of ten strings: and to the melody of the lyre. For in all you have done, O Lord, you have made me glad: I will sing for joy because of the works of your hands. The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: they shall spread abroad like a cedar in Lebanon. For they are planted in the house of the Lord: and flourish in the courts of our God. In old age they shall be full of sap: they shall be sturdy and laden with branches; And they will say that the Lord is just: the Lord my rock, in whom is no unrighteousness.

Lenten Taizé - Catholic Church Maleny

Wednesday 27th March 7:00pm

The Taizé Prayer service has ecumenical origins in France. Its short mantra-like

songs create a relaxing style of prayer well suited to Lent. The simplicity and

repetition become a way of listening to God in a church dimly lit with

candle light. Come along with other Christians to the Catholic Church in Maleny

on Wednesday evening 27th March at 7 pm to experience a Lenten Taizé service.

A READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS CHAPTER 15: BEGINNING AT THE 51ST VERSE: (Pew Bible page 936)

Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labour is not in vain.

HEAR THE WORD OF THE LORD THANKS BE TO GOD

THE GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE CHAPTER 6: BEGINNING AT THE 39TH VERSE: (Pew Bible page 838)

Jesus also told the disciples a parable: “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully qualified will be like the teacher. Why do you see the speck in your neighbour’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbour, ‘Friend, let me take out the speck in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbour’s eye. “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; for each tree is known by its own fruit. Figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of the evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks. “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I tell you? I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house.”

Rev’d Derek Barrett’s Commentary on the Readings: Transfiguration

Psalm 99

The theme for today’s Eucharist is the Transfiguration of Our Lord. The reading from Exodus concerns itself with Moses coming down from the mountain top with the two tablets of the covenant with a face radiant with Divine Glory. Today’s psalm has been chosen because it reflects the ancient belief in the otherness and holiness of the Lord of Heaven and Earth. “Holy is He” is the refrain of both verse 3 and verse 5. “Holy is the Lord our God” is in verse 5. It is not a pointless repetition but one of emphasis and a powerful means of fastening this concept so that it becomes firmly fixed in the mind. Bp. Reginald Heber (1783-1826) used this literary device for his famous hymn, Holy, Holy, Holy, for these three words are the beginning of all four verses, and it is the third verse which is being considered in our thinking, reading, singing, praying and preaching today: Holy, Holy, Holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see, Only Thou art Holy, there is none beside Thee, Perfect in power, in love, and purity. 2 Corinthians 3 – 4

Judaism concentrated on what Moses brought down from the Mountain summarised by what was contained in “The Decalogue”, the ten commandments engraved in solid stone. The words we are hearing in today’s epistle were written about 54 years after Our Lord was born, therefore only 20 or so years after His death and resurrection. So these are very early days in the mission field and there were no “scriptures” as we know them today. Errors were bound to arise and the leaders of the infant church were bound to make mistakes in need of correction. There are no “Ten Commandments” for the followers of Jesus except that which can be written “in the heart”, and this must have been totally galling for the Christian teachers who had first been Jews. Paul knows that the “Law” was preparatory and transient (veiled). It throws light on the One who was to come. Jesus has given a new commandment (singular): You are to love, for God is love (unveiled). Paul is reminding us that the “Law” kills. Jesus gives life. Luke 9

Irenaeus wrote, “The glory of God is the living person, and the life of people is the vision of God”. The account of the transfiguration (metamorphosis) is in the first three gospel and the prologue of the fourth gospel ends with the words, “The Word was made flesh and lived among us, and we beheld His glory.” Which prompted a more recent commentator to conclude: “The transfiguration is the revelation of the potential spirituality of the earthly life in the highest outward form…..here, the Lord as Son of Man, gives the measure of the capacity of humanity, and shows that to which He leads those who are united with Him” (Bp. Westcott). It has been rightly noted that St. Luke is the evangelist of prayer, for only Luke records that the transformation took place while Jesus was praying on the mountain top. At the conclusion of the vision the voice of God was heard, “Listen to Him”. Jesus had perhaps already heard another voice, the voice of a father of an epileptic boy at the foot of the mountain!

ABM Pew Reflections - Eighth Sunday After Epiphany Today Jesus tells a parable about those who build their house on rock, and those who build it on soft soil. As the hymn-writer wrote, ‘Christ is made the sure foundation.’ During the upcoming season of Lent we can strengthen our faith by looking to Jesus – spending more time with him in prayer, worship and Scripture reading.

Pray that we might unveil our hearts to God further and allow him to move and change us more deeply.

Give thanks for the work and witness of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente, the Philippine Independent Church.

Compassion Quote of the Week

“Let us not underestimate how hard it is to be compassionate. Compassion is hard because it requires the inner disposition to go with others to place where they are weak, vulnerable, lonely, and broken. But this is not our spontaneous response to suffering. What we desire most is to do away with suffering by fleeing from it or finding a quick cure for it.” Henri Nouwen
