Father Burbeck will celebrate Mass before Adoration on Thursday. Cookies: Our very own Brownie Scout, Olivia Stidd, will be selling Girl Scout cookies after all masses the weekend of Feb. 21st. Cookies are $4.00 per box & this year we have gluten free cookies also. Your support of Girl Scout Troop 4305 is appreciated.

Help fight hunger by participating in the 40 Cans for Lent drive sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. While we appreciate that you donate nonperishable foods on a regular basis, what better way to celebrate the Year of Mercy than to give the equivalent of a can of food for each of the 40 days of Lent. All donated items are taken to the Wallace food pantry for distribution as needed. The Knights of Columbus Annual State Raffle for a 7 night trip to Alaska or a 7 night Caribbean Cruise or 5 cash prizes, will be held in May. Tickets for a chance to win can be obtained from any Knight. They cost $5 each. You cannot win if you do not purchase a ticket. This is an important part of our local fundraising as 50% of sales are retained in our local Council.

Did you Know??? Fear of the Lord During Lent and at other times of the liturgical year,

we read or listen to scripture that tells us to “fear the Lord.” We are told that “fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” and “happy are those who fear the Lord, who walk in the ways of God.” What does this word “fear” mean; and what does it mean to “fear the Lord?” The word “fear” in regard to the phrase “fear of the Lord” is not to be taken in the sense that common usage gives it. While scripture does tell us to “serve the Lord with fear...lest you perish from the way,” most often, when scripture speaks of “fear of the Lord” it means a kind of marveling and reverential fear. To “fear God” is to have profound reverence for God. Perhaps the words “awe” or “wonder” rather than “fear” would say it better for us. A healthy “fear of the Lord” is a gift of the Holy Spirit, since it enables one to acknowledge God's greatness. To “fear the Lord” is to dread offending God who is the source of all goodness and love. A proper “fear of the Lord” involves a fear of being separated from God by our sins, which result in the loss of sanctifying grace. The Bible tells us that “fear of the Lord” is man's glory, bringing forth “a fountain of life” and a “paradise of blessings.” The Bible also tells us that, “wealth and vigor build up confidence, but better still is fear of God. Fear of the Lord leaves nothing wanting; those who have it need seek no other support.”

Did You Know that students who attend a public school, and meet the eligibility requirements, may receive up to $4,200 to attend a non-public

school. This gives our parish members the opportunity to choose the school that best fits the needs of their child. This may provide the opportunity a student to attend a Catholic School near you. Funds remain available for this school year, 2015-2016. Soon the application process will begin for the 2016-2017 school year. The North Carolina Opportunity Scholarships will allow more students to find an educational foundation or scholarship and discipleship in a Catholic school. To apply for an Opportunity Scholarship, contact http://www.ncseaa.edu/K-12Grants.htm . The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They "are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs" (USCCA). They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life.

Two of the seven Corporal Works of Mercy are listed below. After each work of mercy there are also suggestions and words of advice for living them out in our daily lives. Have your own suggestions? Let us know @USCCB and use the hashtag #mercyinmotion. Feed the hungry- There are many people in this world who go without food. When so much of our food goes to waste, consider how good stewardship practices of your own food habits can benefit others who do not have those same resources.

1. Having delicious food at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner? Donate to a Thanksgiving or Christmas food drive so everyone can have something to eat.

2. Research, identify and contribute financially to organizations that serve the hungry.

3. The next time you make a recipe that can be easily frozen, make a double batch and donate one to your local food pantry or soup kitchen.

4. Try not to purchase more food than you are able to eat. If you notice that you end up throwing groceries away each week, purchasing less groceries would eliminate waste and allow you to donate the savings to those in need.

Give Drink to the thirsty- Many of our brothers and sisters in Christ do not have access to clean water and suffer from the lack of this basic necessity. We should support the efforts of those working towards greater accessibility of this essential resource.

1. We take it for granted that we have access to clean water. Donate. . . to help build wells for water for those in need

2. Organize a group of children involved on a sports team (e.g. soccer) or a summer camp. Invite them to collect bottled water to distribute at a shelter for families. If parents can be involved, ask them to accompany their children in delivering the water to the families.

3. Do the same for youth and young adult groups. 4. Make an effort not to waste water. Remembering

to turn off the water faucet when you are brushing your teeth or washing dishes can help, especially in regions suffering from drought.
