Dear Brothers and Sisters:

Happy Second Week of Lent! The journey has well begun. Where are you in your Lenten celebration? Having trouble and need a kick start? Why not visit our website and take part in one of the many opportunities we have listed there that you can do safely in your own home and at your leisure? Come participate in the Stations of the

Cross or spend some quiet time in front of the Blessed Sacrament. Whatever suits you, please take the advantage of this Lenten Tide to do something for yourself and deepen your relationship with the God who loves you so deeply.

Our readings this weekend are very rich. I particularly love the second reading from St. Paul to the Romans. It is one of my favorite pieces of scripture. Paul starts this selection by asking a very profound question: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” He goes on to make his case in very lawyerly style and concludes that there is

nothing that can separate us from God’s love. To me that is a very profound thought. NOTHING can separate us from God’s love. There is, however a subtext to that verse that we have to acknowledge and this is that while Paul goes to great length to tell us how no other creature, visible or invisible, can separate us from God’s Love,

we ourselves can. For as much as God’s love is a gift freely given, it is never forced upon us. It’s a gift we must choose to receive and be part of.

Today in our Gospel as Jesus is transfigured before the apostles, as a divine voice is heard, “This is my beloved Son, Listen to him.” God has shown us the depth of his love for us by the very offering of this same beloved Son

on the Cross. This shows us the length to which God will go to ensure that we know his generosity and self-sacrifice. That he would not even spare his “beloved Son”, for our sake.

SO, how do we respond to this gesture? How do I respond to a love that is so gratuitous and overwhelming?

Isn’t that the question that we take up this Lent? Over the next few weeks I encourage you to reflect on these questions. How am I open to God’s love? Is there a part of my life I am afraid to share with God for fear that he

will reject me? What ways am I failing to say “thank you” with the sacrifices of my life to God who gave all for me?

Peace,

Fr. Steve

Lent

Rules for Fast and Abstinence Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days fast and abstinence. Fast means that those between the ages of 18 and 59 limit themselves to one full meal and eat nothing between meals. The other meals on a fast day are light meals. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. Those 14 years of age and older are to abstain from meat.

Stations of the Cross with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament

Join us for the Stations of the Cross on each of the following Fridays: March 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th at 9:30AM (following the 9:00AM Mass). You can also share in the Stations on Friday evenings at the Eucharistic Adoration Hour (7:00-8:00 PM) in the Convent Chapel (Stations begin at 7:30PM) or Wednesdays at 12:30PM at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs.

Children’s Stations of the Cross As we did last year, a Children’s Stations of the Cross will recorded and made available to the parish via our website.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation Celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation provides us with an encounter with our Compassionate God. Lent is an especially opportune time to experience God’s mercy in this sacramental way. The parish offers weekly celebrations of the sacrament on Saturday (except on Holy Saturday, April 3rd) from 4:00PM to 4:45PM. Additional times for Sacrament of Reconciliation will be announced soon.

Almsgiving One of the Lenten sacrifices is Almsgiving. As a parish pledged to stewardship, we share our resources with those less fortunate than we. During this season of sacrifice we will send a donation of $1,500 ($300 a week from our weekly Lenten collections) to various groups that need our support. The names of the organizations will be placed in the bulletin in the event that you might want to send a personal donation as well.
