Our 7 Elect and 13 Candidates are now in the Period of Purification and Enlightenment. Throughout this holy season of Lent special prayers called scrutinies, are
offered at Mass on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent for these 20 people. The prayers call for strengthening in grace, virtue and purification from all past wrongdoings
that may hinder them from experiencing the love of God.
During this period, the reflection on the Scriptures continues; the readings of Lent are chosen with the
themes of continuing conversion in mind. The Church continues the custom of "handing over" to the Elect the Creed (the summary of our faith) and the Lord's Prayer (which represents its practice of continuing prayer after
the command of Jesus who taught us to pray).

Saint of the Week Stewardship of Treasure
St. Katharine Drexel 1858–1955
Feast Day—March 3
The daughter of a wealthy Philadelphia banker, Katharine received marriage proposals but wanted to become a contemplative nun. After inheriting a fortune, she visited the Dakotas and witnessed American Indians’ poverty, subsequently pleading with Pope Leo XIII to send them more missionar-ies. But he and others encouraged her to found a congregation to work among people of color. In 1891, she and thirteen companions became the first Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. For more than forty years, she led the order, using her for-tune to establish numerous missions and schools for Indians and African Americans. Following a major heart attack in 1935, she retired to a life of prayer. Canonized in 2000, she is the patron of home missions.
