The Pastor’s Desk Rev. Justin Terrell, Pastor ▪ [email protected]

One of the great things about going to college in Knoxville, TN, was being in such close proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains. With Gatlinburg only a forty-five minute drive from campus, it made for convenient trips to see the beautiful scenery and wildlife. One summer, while I was taking summer classes, I decided to go on a hike in the mountains. I made my way to a trail that led to the Chimney Tops. The Chimney Tops trail is only two miles long–but a very steep and rugged two miles. After 3 hours of hiking, I finally made it to the peak, which required climbing the last fifty yards on my hands and knees. The view from the top was breathtaking. It was worth every ounce of sweat and pain from the hike. The Christian life is like a journey to the top of a great mountain. From the time we are born again by placing our trust in Christ to the time we are glorified in heaven, we are climbing toward God in holiness and spiritual maturity. The climb is not always easy or predictable, but once we reach heaven it will be totally worth it. However, there are many times in our lives that we feel as if we have reached the peak before we get to heaven. Many seasoned believers get the idea that after years of church attendance, Bible study, and Christian service, they no longer have anymore climbing to do. While all believers should feel a sense of growth and maturity over the years, the Bible teaches that none of us have come close to being finished with our journey until we have reached heaven. Until we get to heaven, there is much more to learn about God, the Christian life, and our mission. This is why it is important that we keep climbing toward the peak of maturity and holiness–regardless of how many years we have been saved. Paul states that our goal as believers should be, "until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of

God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ" (Eph. 4:13). In other words, we have not reached the peak of Christian maturity until we are exactly the same as the Lord Jesus Christ. All of us have a lot of mountain left to climb. In order to help us climb toward the peak of spiritual maturity, we are starting our Life Group ministry again this fall. As many of you may know, we will offer 4-6 adult discipleship studies on Wednesday evenings. These studies last between 7-10 weeks and usually contain 10-15 people in each group. Along with attending a Sunday School class, these studies will help you learn deeper truths about God through His word and motivate you to live out your Christian faith with courage each day. We also have Souled Out and Kids For Christ – both being discipleship events for our students and children. It is my prayer that you will involve your family on Wednesday evenings this fall and climb toward the peak of holiness and spiritual maturity in Christ!

Music Ministry Donny Thomas, Interim Worship Pastor ▪ [email protected]

Greetings church family. August is upon us and it is time to get geared up for the Fall. Are you ready for some cooler temperatures? Remember that life groups will be starting soon, and for the first time, choir will be a life group you can choose. As we continue preparing our hearts and minds for worship, we will also be preparing ourselves as ministers of the Gospel. God uses a variety of ways to reach the lost and minister to his people. Starting in August, come join us at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday nights in the choir room (changes to 6:00 p.m. on August 22) and see what God can do with a willing heart. Through His Faithfulness,

THE PURSUIT! Centrifuge was an amazing time and life changing week… God broke down hearts and walls to work in the students in such a way that words can’t describe. My prayer is that now they continue applying what they learned at Centrifuge in their life and daily walk. At Centrifuge they learned about pursuing God daily and allowing God to pursue them. Please continue to pray for all of our students,

pray that they continue walking towards the cross and keep Jesus the priority of their lives!

Prayer Walking Local Schools in August

Our Associational WMU is encouraging each church in our Association to participate in “Prayer Walking” the local schools prior to the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. Prayer Walking is defined as “praying on-site with insight.” Our Fairburn First Baptist Church WMU/WOM would like to encourage each of our organizations, i.e., Brotherhood, Youth, Women’s Ministry, and others to walk with us or to select a date and time for your organization to Prayer Walk together.

The following guidelines are recommended for your consideration: Contact the principal of the school to let him/her know you will be praying

for his/her school. Let him/her know the specific date of your prayer walk, and ask if he/she has specific prayer requests. It might be helpful to gather information about the school, i.e., number of students and teachers, staff and administrators.

Go to the actual location of the school for which you are praying. Pray conversationally with your eyes open as you walk. Plan to allow at least one hour for your prayer walk. Include scripture in your prayers and allow times of silence for God to

speak.

Below is a list of those to pray for, followed by accompanying Bible verses: Pray for the administrators, teachers and students. Acts 1:8 Pray for all who walk the school halls. Pray that they treat each other with

respect and dignity, valuing each other’s giftedness and talents. Galatians 5:22-23

Pray for students who might feel bullied or threatened. Pray that they find strength and the voice to tell an adult what is happening. Joshua 1:9

Pray that each child would be covered with God’s protection. Pray that they will be safe from physical, intellectual, spiritual, sexual, and emotional harm. John 17:15

Pray for the peaceful environment of each classroom, and that they will be free from fear and chaos. Psalm 34:14

Pray for teachers to impart knowledge, information and wisdom. Pray each teacher will know how to meet the many needs of their students. Proverbs 19:20

Pray for the administrators as they make decisions that could have life-changing consequences. Pray that they have discernment and strength to be fair to everyone. Psalm 106:3

Pray for students who are Christian. Pray that they will be bold and courageous and will stand up for God. I Peter 3:15

Pray specifically for the Principal, other administrators, office staff, cafeteria staff, custodial staff, bus drivers, coaches, teachers and students. Pray that God’s Light will shine brightly on them this year. Isaiah 9:2

After your prayer walking event, we would like to know how it went and how many from your organization participated. Would you please let Jo Croom know the name of the school and number from your organization who participated in this event.

Prayer is powerful. Thank you for the difference your prayers will make in the schools in the Fairburn area.

A Letter From Barbara Curnutt Executive Director, GA WMU & WEM

For a number of years, the women of Georgia have been called to pray through our Hearts Called to Pray emphasis for the unreached people of Tibet, the Southern Rim, and Northern Africa & the Middle East. As a result of many women praying faithfully each month for specific requests from workers on the field, we are witnessing God's power being unleashed among the nations.

This past year God led us to develop a prayer initiative that not only provides specific prayer requests but also equips and encourages a more effective praying life for all women. One in Prayer is the new Georgia WMU&WEM web-based prayer initiative providing a monthly prayer focus, thoughts, resources, and prayer requests. A weekly reminder, devotion and prayer is sent every Monday morning to all who subscribe to the new website oneinprayer.net. Each Wednesday there are updates to 'Listening and Responding to God,' which give us insight to knowing God better as we learn His many names and attributes.

Oswald Chambers says: 'Prayer does not fit us for the greater work, prayer is the greater work.' We believe God has called Georgia women to this greater work of prayer and invite you to join us by subscribing today to oneinprayer.net. Please select any of the menu options to view the subscribe feature.
