    PROTOTYPES

Reducing Video Game Consumption on kids and Parental Awareness

  • As excess in video game consumption fall into critical domains, what can we do to create awareness

in parents on kids video game consumption or reduce game play? It seems very hard to separate kids

from electronic devices specially video games.

  • RESEARCHAccording to a new study kids 5 to 12 years of age give more than 8 hours a day to an electronic device (a workday) 1 1

Contributing to poor health, 2 There are two main causes for this obesity epidemic:1. Poor eating habits2. Lack of physical activity, which may be closely tied to kids' amount of media consumption

Parental limitations: Only three out of 10 young people have parent-enforced limitations on video game and Internet use.

  • ITERATION 1.2Torture chair, has 4 different sides to it; one side had acrylic rods in different heights so it would be

very uncomfortable, one side having a push sensor that when sat on it would start a heating pad and

release unbearable heat, another side having a plastic sheet in which inside consisted in different sizes

of acrylic balls, and form of rocks, that moves when sat on, and the last side being sticky so when sat

    on you could not move.

  • PRECEDENTS 1.2DUNNE AND RABY

Dunne & Raby use design as a medium to stimulate discussion and debate amongst designers, industry and the public about the social, cultural and ethical implications of existing and emerging technologies.

The em-muzzle connects the highly sensitive part of a dog's brain concerned with processing smell to an antenna for sensing electromagnetic fields. The kevlar mask blocks the eyes and ears of the dog so that it can guide its handler to an electronically unmonitored zone.

Robot 1: it needs to avoid strong electromagnetic fields as these might cause it to malfunction. Every time a TV or radio is switched on, or a mobile phone is activated it moves itself to the electromagnetically quietest part of the room. As it is ring shaped, the owner could, if they liked, place their chair in its centre, or stand there and enjoy the fact that this is a good space to be in.

Object for LonelyMen 2001 Video shot on DVCAM

Object for Lonely Men tells the story of a man so obsessed with Godards Breathless that he designs and builds a tray which reflects the physical language of the film. The tray is made from a single sheet of vacuum formed plastic and has recesses which house the objects that the man interacts with. The objects include a mannequin head which resembles Jean Seberg (the female lead), a gun, hat, telephone, Herald Tribune newspaper, sunglasses, ashtray, steering wheel, rear view mirror and a pack of Gitanes non-filtered cigarettes. The tray serves as an outlet for the mans desires; it allows him to directly channel the influence of the movie on his fantasies into physical action.

Noam Torans work involves the creation of intricate narratives developed as a means to reflect upon the interrelations of cinema, history, mass culture, and individual and collective psychology. The works are most often exhibited as sculptures, films and installations.
