Did You Know

Sister Nepomucene Jaeger, foundress of Sacred Heart Monastery, was 34 years old when she came

to Chicago at her brother’s request.

”Just as Jesus died and has risen again, so through Jesus God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep; and as in Adam all die,

so also Christ will all be brought to life.” (cf 1 Thessalonioans 4:14; 1 Corinthians 15:22)

Rev. Gregor Gorsic, Pastor (815) 886-4165 ext. 317

My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle! Hey! Hey! Cubs in the World Series (so close!! Hey, one can dream, right?!). We might as well say hell has frozen over, the Second Coming of Jesus has begun, and we live in a new heaven and a new earth in the Communion of Saints! Just imagine: finally, after many tortuous decades of hoping and praying, the Chicago Cubs make it to the World Series. Tickets are scarce, but one lucky guy, through a lottery, was fortunate to acquire a single ticket for this momentous event. However, this man lacked any knowledge or insight about the game of baseball. He spent his time gorging on hot dogs and beer, running to concession stands for souvenir caps and pennants. Or while seated, with his binoculars he scanned the press box, the roof-top bleachers, and the skyline of Chicago. He failed to focus on the thrills, excitement, and stimulating action on the field. Alas, he missed the glory of the game. Surveys reveal that some Catholics attending Sunday Mass humbly confess a lack of fundamental understanding of the Liturgy and difficulty in focusing on the beauty of the Mass. Distractions, weariness, and wandering thoughts prevent many from experiencing the spiritual depth, the exciting solemnity, and the inspiring drama of the Sunday celebration. It could be a simple, unrestrained thought about the Sunday dinner or the outcome of the afternoon Bear’s game that can cause minds to drift away from the ardor and devotion evolving before them in the Sanctuary. The Mass is the most amazing way God provides for us to grow in holiness, to become the SAINTS we are called to be. Unlike the ball game, by going to Mass you get free parking, a first-rate “box seat” without an expensive ticket, a special invitation to a sacred Eucharistic meal, and to be present at an epochal “World Series” event, the Sunday Mass. Prayerfully and hopefully, all of us faithful — all of us saints-in-the-making — will make a concerted effort to learn and appreciate a valuable treasure, the very center of Catholic life, the Mass. You know, all saints have a deep love and devotion for Jesus in the Eucharist. Think of St. Padre Pio’s great love of Jesus in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta and her sisters would pray at least two hours a day, and one of her daily prayers before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament she took from Cardinal Newman: “Dear Jesus …stay with me, and then I shall begin to shine as you shine, so to shine as to be a light to others. The light, O Jesus, will be all from you.” She would also repeat this truth: “Holiness is not the luxury of the few, it is a simple duty for each one of us.” What is God’s desire for the world? It is simply this: All Saints, all brothers and sisters! Every year we begin this month of November with the feast of All Saints and All Souls, reminding us of the mutual help we give to one another, even (and especially!) beyond the grave. There are over 10,000 named saints and beati (blessed) declared from the earliest Christian days until today. This figure is based on the Roman Martyrology and also from Orthodox sources, but there is really no definitive “head count.” In other words, God only knows – literally! A recent historical study by journalist, Antonio Socci, discovered that in two thousand years of Christian history thus far, about 70 million faithful have given their lives for the faith, and of these, 45.5 million – fully 65% – were in the last century! Although these faithful have not yet been officially declared “saints” or “Christian martyrs” according to the more narrow and specific sense of the word (that is, with the recognition of the Church’s processes of canonization), we can still say that they stand before the throne of God as witnesses to Christ. Many of us who have survived the 20th century have lived through a time that will be recorded in history as perhaps the most striking in the records of Christian martyrdom. But martyrs aren’t just from the recent past. Still today, the martyrdom of Christians has had no letup, for instance in various parts of the countries of North Korea, Somalia, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Sudan, Iran, Pakistan, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Yemen, Vietnam, Palestinian Territories, China, Jordan, and others, just to name a few of the foremost areas of persecution. We live in a time of great opportunities to become saints, to witness to the Presence of Jesus. May His Presence at the Eucharist strengthen us in our path toward holiness. Yes, it’s true that while every person who is canonized is a saint, not every holy person has been canonized. You have probably known many “saints” in your life, and hopefully you see one-in-the-making every morning when you look into the mirror – yes, we are all called by God to be saints! In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

COULD YOU NOT WATCH ONE HOUR WITH ME?

FIRST FRIDAY November 6 2015

Eucharistic Adoration on Friday, November 6 will begin after the 7:30am Mass and end with Benediction at 2:00pm.

If you are able to commit to one hour a month to adore our Lord in the Holy Eucharist, please call Mary Ann at 815-372-0223 to choose a time (between 8:30am and 2:00pm) and insure that our Lord will not be left alone at any time.

The Altar of the Dead - All Souls’ Day All Souls’ Day is Monday, November 2nd. We will celebrate Mass at 7:00 PM to remember and pray for all the faithful departed. A Litany of names of those who have been buried from St. Andrew the Apostle this past year will be sung as a candle is lit for each soul. All are welcome. At the church entrance is The Book of the Dead. Write the name of your deceased loved ones in the book. Please write the name ONLY ONCE. This book will be place on the altar during the All Souls Mass and through-out the month of November and we will pray for them all. You are invited to bring in a small picture of your deceased love one and place it on the “Altar of the Dead” set up to the left of the sanctuary.

Kudos to our football players who beat St. Mary White in three

overtimes during their last game. This allowed our team to beat St. Mary White again during the playoffs on Saturday. They advanced to the second playoff game on Sunday, but were not able to defeat St. Mary Red. Good effort, Crusaders! Last chance to help our the teachers. Our Sky of Wishes is on the bulletin board in the Administration wing. Whatever cloudyou choose to support will help a teacher purchase needed items for their classroom.

“Students” LOOK FOR THE BLUE BINDER if you are from 5TH grade and up. From now on, students will only be allowed to go out on a route and collect food door to door. Anyone under 18 must have a permission slip to help that are available in the sign-up binder. Students should return forms by Friday, November 20th to the folder on the bulletin board in the Elementary Wing across from the bathrooms, or they may be brought in on November 21st by 10:15am.

Drivers and students going out with drivers, must be there on that day at 10:15am. Please have your driver’s license, information sheet, and proof of insurance readily available. All other helpers should be there by 11:00am for service. Instructions will follow for the area you have signed up to work. Bring a friend to share the fellowship and service of the Lord and His people. Driver info sheets are on the Harvest Saturday bulletin board.

For those of you that live in Carillon, there will be a collection within your own community, and further instructions will be given to you. See Marion Schaeflein.

For further information, please contact Deb Eischen at [email protected] or call Bernadette at the Parish Office (815-886-4165 x303). As always, thank you for your generosity, service, and support.

Thank you, Deb Eischen/Chris Braasch/Denise Armbruster/Kim Hanahan

GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED: Pamela Boll, Christine Voyles, Greta Schwarz, John O’Connell

Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners

Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!

After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
