MAY 20, 2016 Fantastic Fridays Children First, Always… The Bryan Way Source: Orlick, T. (2000). In pursuit of excellence: How to win in sport and life through mental training. Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics. As the school year draws down, we all have many exciting commitments and demands on our time. There’s plenty to be distracted about, and at times it can feel as if we’re flying solo on the things we need to do at work or at home. Really we aren’t flying solo, and there are people and resources who can help, but sometimes it still feels that way. In thinking about my topic this week, I thought about how the lead goose in a flock might feel, flying at the head of a formation. It’s a lot of work, and there is a lot on that bird’s shoulders (or wings, so to speak), but the other geese in the formation honk along and encourage their leader. Then when the time comes for rest and help, that lead bird moves back and lets another come forward to lead. There are no doubt many things you have to tackle and events you need to manage this time of year, but please know that, like a formation of geese, there are many who support you and who can help you when you get tired or need support. It hasn’t been the easiest week in public education. News has been made about schools from Federal and State levels. But there has also been some very positive news, like the board’s approval of our new attendance zone map for 2017-2018. We hired a new director of fine arts for next year (see page 2). We moved forward on several construction projects, and the work already underway is looking great! Through good news and bad, I have always felt your support, and I want each of you to know that you are supported to, by me and by countless others in our wonderful district. With all of the news this week, most good, and some not remotely related to educating children let’s take a lesson from the geese in supporting one another. Let’s fly in formation, encourage each other and step in when we can help someone who needs support. Thank you for serving our children this year, and here’s wishing you a very happy end of the school year. It’s not far away. Have a wonderful weekend, get some rest and as always, remember what is important in life. Flying in Formation
