family • Welcome 03

Welcome to the

familyHello and welcome to the

first edition of Bolton School’s family Magazine, a brand new publication for parents, carers, grandparents, former pupils and friends of the School across the North-West.

Each edition will bring you a lively mix of parenting news, school information, luxury lifestyle features, a food and drinks section, competitions/offers, business, motoring, entertainment and travel.

Produced by a publishing consortium, which specialises in school publications, Family Magazine is distributed via schoolbags directly to parents.

And for our readers outside of the school - you will find thousands of magazines dotted around your favourite destination points - and through doors in selected areas.

2015 marks the centenary of girls and boys coming together to form the Bolton School Foundation sited on Chorley New Road. You can read more about this on page 34.

Our cover story in this issue features dressage star Lauren O’Hagan who recently returned to her native North-West to both teach and compete. Lauren is a rising star on the equestrian scene with an eye on the next Olympics.

Our other leading lady is former Bolton School pupil Janette McCormick who explains how she juggles life as a police chief, wife and mum. (page 35).

And on page 5 you will find a message for Spring from Heads Philip Britton and Sue Hincks.

In the food and drink section we interview wine buff Oz Clarke and television’s Hairy Bikers - who share some great tips for getting the best out of shopping at farmers’ markets.

We have some super seasonal recipes - matched with the perfect wines by Bolton connoisseurs T. Wright Wine.

We hope you will embrace this magazine as your own and feel free to call or email (details on this page) with any suggestions, comments or story ideas.

This magazine is made possible because of the high quality businesses you will see advertised inside. So please do check out their exclusive offers.

We hope you enjoy the first edition and we will be back again later in the year with more interviews, what’s on guides, recipes, competitions and news.

See you soon!

We are delighted to introduce family, a new magazine that stretches out beyond the Bolton School community to families right across the region. It is a publication which hopefully includes something for everyone.

This year and next promise to be momentous years for us as we celebrate 100 years of the Bolton School Foundation and, next year, 500 years of education in Bolton. We are very proud that earlier versions of the School have been offering education in Bolton since at least 1516.

Bolton School provides an exceptional environment for a

young person to study in and exam results regularly mean we are ranked in the top 100 schools nationally.

Some children start their educational journey early with us in our Nursery or Nursery Class for 3 and 4 Year Olds, whilst many others join the Reception Class in our co-educational Infant School. From Year 3 (age 7) upwards

girls and boys are educated in single-sex settings in our Junior and Senior Schools with Sixth Forms. Our pupils enjoy the “best of both worlds;” single-sex teaching where they can focus wholly on their studies as well as lots of opportunities for girls and boys to work together in dramatic productions, charitable activities and in music, no better example of which is our forthcoming Gala Concert at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. This promises to be a spectacular event and will combine the musical talents of girls and boys from our Senior, Junior and Infant Schools and the newly formed ‘Friends of Bolton School Choir’.

The best way to truly appreciate our School is to visit us and a number of open events are coming up. These include an open afternoon on 23 April from 4.30pm-6.30pm when you and your child can visit our Infant and Junior Schools; an Open Doors and Taster Lessons’ morning for Year 4 and 5 children (and parents) interested in our Senior Schools on Friday 12 June from 10.45am-12.30pm;

and a Discovery Day for Year 5 Girls on Thursday 2 July from 4.30pm-5.45pm.

Of course, parents and their children are always very welcome to tour the School during term-time when they can get a feel for the industrious but friendly atmosphere that can be found throughout our campus.

Further details about arranging a visit and about the School can be requested from 01204 840201 and found at: www.boltonschool.org

Happy reading!

EXPLORA THE FLORATOP FIVE WEDDING FLOWERS FOR SPRING BRIDES

Summer may be the most popular time of year to get married in the UK – but Spring provides a beautiful variety in terms of colour schemes and flowers for brides to choose from.

These trends work just as well in the home – creating a feeling of spring in every room. Here are the top favourite flower choices for the season…

Lilac Lilac makes a wonderful spring

wedding flower, not only because of its tiny, delicate clustered flower heads and wonderful scent, but because it also means ‘first emotions of love’, bringing a touch of romantic symbolism to designs. From deep purpley blues, through to soft lilacs, pinks and white, it comes in a variety of gorgeous shades that can work in many colour schemes.

Clematis A spring-flowering climber, clematis

is perfect for candelabra and garland designs and also looks lovely in trailing bouquets and loose, wild designs. Clematis flowers come in a variety of blues, purples and pinks and there is even a large-flowered, white cultivar called ‘Wedding Day’, which has a plain green band on each petal and striking dark pink anthers.

Viburnum opulusAlso knows at the Guelder rose,

this flowering shrub is a hugely versatile material for floral designs. Its bright, lime green colour adds pops of brightness and interest and it works well with most other flowers for weddings. Its large size and round form also make it a particularly good filler and addition to large scale displays like pedestals, pots and urns. It looks especially lovely with pale pinks, peaches or purple, or in a fresh, simple colour scheme of green and white.

RanunculusA bit like mini peonies, this extremely

delicate, round, multi-petal flower is great for romantic wedding designs and has become particularly popular in recent years. From the purist white and palest of pinks, to bright yellows, oranges, red and even deep burgundy, they come in many different colours and are at their best from January, with the main season usually ending around May/June. Ranunculus look fabulous by themselves, but work equally well with a variety of other spring flowers too.

TulipsIt’s always great to use seasonal

blooms, as when flowers are at their best, they’re usually at their cheapest too, and tulips are in abundance at this time of year. While soft pink and nude tones are popular colours for wedding flowers, spring is a great time to mirror nature and bring some bold pops of colour to designs. Tulips are the perfect flower for this and their simple, elegant lines mean they can be used to create a variety of styles.

Gem DetectiveInternational expert shares her pearls of wisdom

for spotting ‘man made’ gemsBy ANTOINETTE MATLINS P.G

‘THE 4 C’S’ – COLOUR, CUT, CLARITY AND CARATThe criteria for diamond grading, most respected worldwide, were developed by the Gemological

Institute of America (the GIA). You can also visit reputable diamond experts for a trustworthy appraisal.

In today’s gem market one must contend with more gemstone materials than

ever before.

Not only old-type synthetics, which are relatively easy to

identify, but new ones spawned by modern, sophisticated technology

that are extremely difficult to distinguish from their natural

counterparts.

Mother Nature has further compounded the difficulties by creating coloured stones that

closely resemble one another so look-alikes abound - tanzanite

can look like sapphire, tsavorite (a green variety of garnet) can look like emerald, red spinel can look

like ruby - and so on.

Recently, in one of my classes, a student learned how costly

incorrect identification can be when she purchased a ruby

necklace at an auction in the US.

It had ‘laboratory report’ and ‘appraisal’ from a legitimate-

sounding company. This should have been the first

red flag. GIA (www.gia.edu) for example, issues lab reports but does not provide any valuation.

The appraisal identified the centre stone as a genuine ruby, valuing it at £14,250 – and she

won it for £6,500!All was well . . . until about a

year later, when she joined one of my classes to find out what she

really had.

I removed the ‘ruby’ after five hours sitting in lemon juice. The class gasped to see the acid from something as simple as the lemon

juice to reveal lead glass.

Luckily, these days, with minimal effort and a nominal investment in several instruments, almost

anyone can venture into the world of gemology.

Sometimes just a basic knowledge of how to use a simple

instrument is all that is needed to avoid an expensive mistake or

recognise a profitable opportunity.

Gem Identification, 5th edition, by Antoinette is available from: www.gazellebookservices.co.uk

ColourThe colour of a diamond refers to the relative amount

of yellow, brown or grey body that a stone possesses. The G.I.A. scale starts at “D” and goes through “Z”, with “D” being void of any colour, and “Z” having a light yellow, brown or grey colour.

CutThe quality of a diamond’s cut makes all the difference

in how the stone appears. A poorly cut “D” stone can look dead and lifeless, whereas an ideally proportioned diamond of much lower colour and clarity will appear radiant and dazzling. So, why aren’t all diamonds ideally proportioned? The answer is quite simple. Diamonds are sold by weight.

Stones cut to ideal proportions waste more of the diamond crystal; therefore weigh less than stones that are cut to maximize weight.

ClarityPractically all diamonds contain naturally occurring

internal characteristics called inclusions. Clarity is determined using 10X magnification. By definition, if something is not visible at 10X, it does not affect the clarity.

Carat WeightCarat is a unit of weight, not size. There are 5 carats in a

gram. The weight of a diamond is measured in carats. A carat is divided into 100 parts, called points.

The Frame Game ARE YOU WEARING THE RIGHT SPECS FOR YOUR FACE SHAPE?

As the geek-chic craze proved spectacles are as much a trend accessory as an everyday necessity for fashion fans today.

Formula 1’s star Lewis Hamilton’s rocked in his wayfarer-inspired specs, which he wore to the IWC Gala Dinner in Geneva last month. Emma Watson’s stylish square frames sparked a nationwide rush to duplicate the specsy look

Family Magazine consulted face geometry expert Kelly Plahay - an Optometrist and Chair of the Eyecare Trust.

She says: “The shape of your frame should compliment your face shape, not duplicate it. The best frames will suit your look whether you dress up or down.”

Here’s Kelly’s expert view on finding the right frames for you…

Oval facesAn oval face has a slightly wider

forehead than jaw, well balanced and softly rounded.

This face can look good in just about any frame, but try angular or rounded aviators (not large, old-fashioned ones).

Round facesFor faces that are short and fairly

wide with full cheeks and a round chin; slightly elongated shapes work well as long as they are not too shallow. Square or even up-swept styles can help to highlight the upper face. Avoid small and round or very large shapes that make the face look even rounder.

Heart-shaped faces These faces have a small, neat chin

and mouth, tapering up and out to a broader forehead. Frames to try include delicate, rounded or squarish styles. Avoid heart-shaped styles that echo the shape of the jaw.

Square facesFor faces that are strong and angular,

or short and wide, the best frames to try are round or oval styles that soften the jaw line. Avoid any shapes that emphasise squareness.

Long facesThese are faces with high cheek

bones, a deep forehead and a strong or chiselled jaw line. Try wider frames that counteract the face’s narrowness. Frames with a strong top line or rounded ‘owl’ styles can work well. Avoid small, square styles.

Quality Dental Care for the all the Family

12 family • Advertising Feature

Ravat & Ray Dental Care was formed in June 2007 by Irfan Ravat and Mark Ray. While working together for 3 years previously at Highfield Dental Practice, they had often discussed their shared vision for the future of dentistry in their home town of Bolton, and took the opportunity to tender for a new practice which the NHS wanted to open locally.

Their vision of quality dental care for all won them the tender, and they opened their first practice together in January 2008 in Deane, Bolton. The recipe of dedication to the highest standards of dental care provision meant that in just 7 short years the company has grown to 11 practices.

Ravat and Ray’s professional and highly motivated teams are their greatest strength. They operate from state-of-the-art premises and their passion is to ensure that every single patient gets the individualised care they deserve.

Big Smiles - And Bigger HeartsRavat and Ray practices are embedded in their local communities, with

each of the practices undertaking outreach work in local schools in order to improve oral health. In addition many charities have been supported by the organisation, raising in excess of £30,000 to date.

Partner Mark, as a keen cyclist undertakes an annual fundraising challenge, which last year was three loops of the Bolton Ironman cycle route in just over 9 hours, a massive 150 miles.

This year’s challenge was in aid of local charity the AS-SUFFA Institute, a local Homeless Outreach project providing up-to 100 meals for the homeless in Bolton each week.

Our ethos is to provide our patients with the highest quality of evidence based dentistry in a modern, comfortable environment and strive to

ensure our patients enjoy unrivalled customer care.

School Association For the last 3 years, Irfan and Mark have been involved with the school

careers programme, providing mock interviews for the girls and boys who have chosen dentistry as their University programme. They have also given world of work talks and have taken the step of inviting groups from school to learn about dentistry, and do some simulated treatments in their training room at Rumworth House. A great boost to their CVs, and enjoyed immensely by the students and accompanying teachers!

We had the pleasure of sponsoring the school bursary golf day, providing vital funds to those who need support to benefit from the excellent education the school has to offer.

Irfan has recently been appointed the Vice Chair of the Old Boltonians, and is looking forward to contributing to the 100/500 celebrations which will mark 100 years of the Bolton School Foundation on its present site and 500 years of Bolton School.

MAKE THE T. WRIGHT WINE CHOICE FOR TASTE AND QUALITYFree local delivery to Bolton, Bury and Central Manchester

T. Wright www.twrightwine.co.uk has been established in Horwich, Bolton as a fine wine merchant for almost 120 years, since 1896, supplying both our long standing retail and trade customers with an incredible range of wines, champagnes, spirits, rare connoisseur whiskies & specialty liqueurs.

We stock a wide and enviable variety of wines from all over the world in our specially constructed cellars; from classic Bordeaux Growths and Burgundy Cru’s to boutique and up and coming wines from the New World, combined with fantastic high quality options for trade customers at keenly focused prices.

One question we are often asked is, “What would you recommend as THE best wine?” There is no single answer to this however as everything comes down to personal taste and we don’t believe that price always dictates the right match either!

One person might prefer a full bodied Australian Shiraz, brimming with notes of intense berry fruits, cinnamon spice and hints of chocolate, while another might prefer an elegant and silky Pinot Noir from Burgundy displaying bright cherry and raspberry flavours mingled with aromas of autumn leaves, mushroom and violet, neither is better, they’re just different. We like to show you the differences between wines but if there’s one thing we can say for certain it’s that the best way to find out which wines work the best for you is to taste them!

At T. Wright we like to make wine approachable for everyone, whether you might be looking for that perfect birthday gift, the ideal wine pairing for a dinner party, some help selecting wedding wines, or maybe you’d like to find out more about our corporate gift service? We also offer free local delivery to Bolton, Bury & Central Manchester.

For any of the above or any other wine related matters we might be able to help you with please get in touch by email: [email protected] telephone: 01204 697805 or call into our shop at 151-153 Chorley New Road in Horwich, we’re open every day until 10.00pm!

Long before Oz Clarke made his name as one of the world’s finest wine experts he was perfecting his palate with milk.

By the age of eight, the BBC’s No 1 booze buff could differentiate between the three types of white stuff produced by a trio of herds near his home in rural Kent.

Says Oz: “We had three farms each rearing Guernsey, Jersey and Hereford cows. “One farm put the cows out to graze on the marshes, another out on the fields, and one at the bottom of the hill. “I used to revel in being able to tell which cows had provided the cream used in mum’s béchamel sauce, or which milk was used to cream the mashed potatoes.”

‘isn’t England a wonderful place.’

Oz is best known for his TV wine and beer romps around the British Isles with supping side-kicks James May and Hugh Dennis. And Greater Manchester and Lancashire are two of his favourite spots – having made many a “wine and pie” recce to the region.

Oz’s annual handy pocket wine guide for 2015 is out now (RRP £9.99). His new book ‘The History of Wine in 100 Bottles’ publishes this May, by Pavilion. RRP £20.00

Oz was also recently given the Lifetime Achievement Award, celebrating a diverse career as a TV presenter, columnist and author, at the Drinks Retailing Awards 2015.

OZ CLARKEINTERVIEW

By SARAH RIGG

Says Oz: “We have a real wine-drinking culture in the UK now with more availability of wines from around the world than any other country. “There should be no pretentiousness with wine. Get a bottle, open it, pour into a glass, drink and repeat!”

It was back in his days as an Oxford student Oz developed a refined taste for wine. “Charles [Metcalfe, wine critic and fellow student] and I realised wine was controlled by boring old farts in pinstriped suits, wealthy people who knew it from home, and it was basically claret, claret, claret, a bit of port, and sherry with the tutor. “We wanted to change things, so we took over the Oxford University Wine and Food Society. Charles became president and I was secretary, we opened it up to women, and we beat Cambridge again and again!”

One of Oz’s most memorable stops was in Morecambe Bay. He adds: “At Morecambe there is a lovely white wine being produced by Mount Pleasant – the UK’s most northerly winemaker. “It is fragrant, delicate and full of dewy flavour – and not too high in alcohol. “Hugh and I took a bottle, bought some fish and chips and looked out as the sun set over the bay. I thought to myself, ‘isn’t England a wonderful place.’”

TV’s Hairy Bikers say buying from local farmers’ markets is the only way to drive down the cost of buying fresh and local.

Bearded buddies Dave Myers and Simon King believe the more we buy from our local producers the cheaper their prices will be. Says Si: “Organic produce can be more expensive than cheap as chips ‘forced’ produce on the supermarket shelves, but it doesn’t have to be.

“It’s such a simple

equation. The more we

buy from local producers,

the more successful they will be, so they

will stay in business.

What’s frustrating is that people are trying to make a difference locally, but then you get the big food giants flying food in.”

Praising Greater Manchester’s wide and varying produce Dave adds: “Most farmers have wised up realising that they can do well if they sell direct. Where farmers’ markets can fail though, is on dependability. People will visit a farmers’ market every two weeks and buy a few treats, and then be down the supermarket buying the bulk of their groceries.

“We need that trend to change so that people buy locally more often, but to do that local produce needs to be much more easily available.”

Hairy BikersSix top tips for getting the best from farmers’ markets

By SARAH RIGG

Here’s their top six tips for buying local:

1. Have a rough plan of what you want to cook for the week ahead before you set out for the farmers’ market – deciding as you go around is fun but you might miss some great opportunities if you don’t have

a few recipe ideas in your head.

2. Bring enough cash because most farmers’ market stallholders don’t take plastic (although a growing number of

stallholders selling meat now have mobile terminals for taking cards).

3. Get to know your seasonal foods and enjoy the changing produce. Your farmers’

market will have the best strawberries that money can buy in June-August,

and gorgeous apples and pears through September-November and if you know what’s likely to be at its peak you’ll buy

best value and best quality.

4. Get to know stallholders – you’re both interested in food, which is a great start

for a conversation! As they get to know you, they’ll have ideas to pass on, new cuts of meat or

types of produce for you to try.

5. Give yourself time to shop. The supermarket dash is one thing but, at the farmers’ market, it pays to take a look at all the stalls first before deciding what to buy, find out what’s good and who’s got what – and then enjoy the

selection and shopping process.

6. Buy eggs! They are almost always cheaper than supermarket eggs –

sometimes by quite a long way – and they are always really fresh. Eggs are the

basis of lots of great family meals.

Avid foodie Yasmeen and the team have spent years sampling the huge diversity of dining available in the North West.

The cultural food fans were so fascinated by the emerging tastes on offer they decided to turn their leisure time into a business.

So leaving her job as a management secretary, she set about launching her own food manufacturing and corporate catering business - Just Tuck In.

Now the enterprising business boasts a devoted clientele for the cuisine, ranging from national charities, local councils and fire departments to Chinese supermarkets and businesses parks.

Says Yasmeen: “We wanted to provide a fresh and tasty alternative to the corporate world. “We felt there was a need for restaurant standard food that we could manufacture ourselves and deliver to the client.”

In the three years since starting the business, their sumptuous platters of Sushi, Burmese curries & Rice have proved a massive hit - and a great alternative to the soggy sandwich and limp lettuce offerings of many corporate gatherings.

The delicious dishes are created, cooked and packed at the company’s manufacturing site in Bolton, before being delivered fresh and direct to the surrounding towns and cities.

Adds Yasmeen: “What we offer is something new and the range is forever evolving. We started with Burmese noodles salads and moved into 12 varieties sushi’s including salmon, prawn, chicken and vegetarian.

“From our experience of sampling Burmese food we decided to create a range with our chef. They are all freshly cooked, with chicken and prawn, and served with exotic coconut-infused rice.”

While their food is fresh and healthy, Yasmeen says they will soon be introducing a more “naughty” range. “We are developing some stunning desserts at the moment, so watch this space.”

The Just Tuck In team will deliver your order and service staff can display and heat curries on site, providing disposable plates and cutlery for your guests or customers. Their sushi is conveniently pre-packed in attractive display platters.

WHAM, BAM – THANK YOU LAMB!Britain’s classic Spring dish

There’s something so special about the taste of spring lamb with its delicate, pale, mouthwatering meat with a fine grain and white crumbly fat to keep it succulent.

It is meltingly tender to eat, and represents the very best of British seasonal fare.

Shoulder of Lamb

Take the shoulder of lamb and salt overnight (approximately 12 hours). Pre heat oven to 140°C, 275°F, Gas Mark 1.Wash off the excess salt under cold running water then dry the shoulder thoroughly with a kitchen roll then make small incisions on both sides of the shoulder and stud with the rosemary and garlic.Place the lamb in a large roasting bag, seal and pop in a roasting tin and cook for 3 to 3.5 hours.Remove lamb from roasting bag (ensuring you keep the juices from the bag) and place on a warm plate or rack to rest lightly covered with tin foil.In a pan, sweat off the shallots until golden brown, add the Madeira and reduce by three quarters.Add the lamb stock, chicken stock and juices from the bag and reduce again until you have the desired consistency then pass through a sieve and place back into the pan bringing it to the boil and whisk in the butter.

We asked wine experts T Wright Wines to match up the perfect vino to complement our top four recipes in this edition…

Parma Ham Recipe Wine PairingsParma Ham has a wonderfully delicate sweet and salty flavour with a smooth,

succulent texture and happily there are a host of wines to choose from that make sublime pairing partners!

Staying local to Italy a classic Pinot Grigio such as the Matteo Braidot Pinot Grigio, £8.89 is a fantastic match; the elegantly perfumed floral, white fruit and citrus aromas and flavours lift the Parma ham and avocado combination beautifully without overpowering them. A sparkling white wine such as a Prosecco , Cava or Champagne would also work extremely well with either recipe. If you would like something with a bit more depth Sherry is also a surprisingly good match; the Hidalgo La Gitana Manzanilla Sherry, £10.49 is crisp and fresh with a lip-smacking salty edge that compliments the Parma Ham marvellously.

For those who prefer red wine it’s best to steer away from heavy, tannic reds that will overwhelm the subtle Parma Ham flavours and instead go for light fruity reds including a Cru Beaujolais such as the Louis Latour Brouilly 2012 £11.99 or another Italian Classic, Valpolicella which will also work very well as would a dry Rosė, still or sparkling.

Sea Trout Recipe Wine PairingsThe clean, bright flavours of Sea Trout combined with the delicious citrus,

parsley and pancetta elements of this recipe calls for a white wine pairing. A fresh, crisp Sauvignon Blanc such as the Moulin de Montarels Sauvignon Blanc from France’s Cotes du Roussillon, £6.99 or the fresh and fruity Mirror Lake Sauvignon Blanc, £8.75 from New Zealand will both make refreshingly zingy partners. Alternatively a young, dry, un-oaked Chablis or an un-oaked New World Chardonnay would also make great matches as would a dry Riesling or for those who prefer weightier options a Pinot Gris or even a young, aromatic, Viognier.

Shoulder of Lamb RecipeSpring lamb is a true British delicacy

and when it comes to wine matching this dish, it has to be red!

Classic and fantastic lamb matches include rich reds from the Rhone region of France where wines are blended from Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre, to produce rich, warming reds such as the Vincent Paris Cornas Granit 30 2010, £25.99.

A full bodied, fruit forward Australian Shiraz brimming with spiced berry and damson flavours, such as the Magpie Estate Knock Knock Shiraz, £15,49 will also make a great choice.

Rioja lovers will be happy to know that the fruity, Tempranillo based wines of Rioja are a fine match for lamb, ideally opt for wines of Crianza level and above, rather than a young Rioja Tinto which might not have enough depth of flavour to stand up to the lamb, rosemary and garlic.

Red wines from Bordeaux are another classic match and for those looking for something a bit off piste why not try the deliciously different Chateau Musar 2007 from Lebanon priced at £24.49, a powerful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault.

All wines mentioned above are available to purchase from T. Wright (subject to stock availability, E&OE). www.twrightwine.co.uk

CAN WE TEACH OUR CHILDREN WILLPOWER?Renowned psychologist Walter Mischel, inventor of the famous Marshmallow Test,

is a leading authority on the nature of human willpower.50 years ago Dr Mischel’s iconic experiment was simple - a child was presented with a

marshmallow and given a choice: Eat this one now, or wait and enjoy two later.

Today his latest research is published in a brand new book The Marshmallow Test: Mastering Self Control…

The ability to delay gratification is critical to living a successful and fulfilling life - and this is the core conclusion of Dr Mischel’s research.

His studies found self control not only predicts higher marks in school, better social and cognitive skills, and a greater sense of self worth; it also helps us manage stress, pursue goals and cope with painful emotions.

Most important for its educational and child-rearing implications - Dr Mischel says willpower can be taught and modified in childhood and later in life.

“The most important thing we learned is that self-control - and the ability to regulate one’s own emotions - involves a set of skills that can be taught, and learned,” he says.

“They’re acquirable. Nothing is predetermined.”

What’s more, he says, these experiments provide concrete lessons about self-control we can use as adults. He argues that the same strategies a five-year-old uses to avoid eating the marshmallow can help you quit smoking, or stick to a diet, or save for retirement.

The psychology professor’s research began with the simple study of four and five year olds that challenged them with the tough dilemma.

A marshmallow that they could have immediately, and a larger reward (two marshmallows), for which they would have to wait, alone, for up to 20 minutes.

Next to the treats was a desk bell the children could ring at any time to call back the researcher and eat the one marshmallow.

Or they could wait for the researcher to return, and if they hadn’t left their chair or started to eat the marshmallow, they could have both.

“It is knowing when it is time to ring the bell and enjoy the marshmallow.”

What the children did as they managed or didn’t manage to delay gratification turned out to predict much about their future lives.

The more seconds they waited at age four or five, the higher their SAT scores and the better their rated social and cognitive functioning in adolescence.

At age 27 - 32, those same children who had waited longer during the Marshmallow Test in preschool had a lower body mass index and a better sense of self-worth, pursued their goals more effectively and coped more adaptively with frustration and stress.

At midlife, those who could consistently wait (“high delay”) versus those who couldn’t (“low delay”), were characterised by distinctively different brain scans in areas linked to addictions and obesity.

The core of the research seems to centre on ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ reactions in the brain and using distraction strategies to “cool down” impulses.

Dr Mischel talks of the importance of keeping stress low during pregnancy and in the infant’s first few years.

His studies show how exposure to extreme and prolonged stress in early life can be damaging in later life, noting that stress levels in babies measured higher in the brain when they were sleeping.

The ability to delay gratification and resist temptations has been a fundamental challenge since the dawn of civilisation. It is central to the Genesis story of Adam and Eve’s temptation in the Garden of Eden.

But as Dr Mischel argues, “Life with too much self-control can be as unfulfilling as one with too little.

“It is knowing when it is time to ring the bell and enjoy the marshmallow.”

Lauren O’Hagan is a name synonymous with quality and success in the equestrian world of dressage.

Rising to the top listings of dressage stars, Lauren was just 18 when she first ranked fourth in the UK Talent Spotting.

Nine years later, the top rated-rider has returned to her native North West to share her expertise at a newly opened training centre in Oswaldtwistle.

Lauren’s clients range from youngsters hoping to carve out a career in dressage to families training their own horses for leisure.

Says Lauren: “I returned to Bury 18 months ago. I rented a yard and within a week it was full with 14 horses on site.”

Lauren yearned to be an international dressage star from a very young age - baffling her career advisor who first suggested a career in accountancy - until realising where her talent could take her.

“After completing my GCSE’s I

moved to Yorkshire at 15 to work for Laura Fry who rode in the Barcelona Olympics.

“I lived and worked there for three years, becoming head girl, and I’m so grateful for that start. Laura was tough, and my god did we get told off! I have to admit I sometimes hear that in myself when I’m training my young girls!”

If Lauren can be a tough cookie, you wouldn’t know it from the glowing testimonials on the chat boards of equestrian sites such as Horse and Hound, where she is clearly revered for her schooling skills.

As a teenager Lauren worked six days a week from 7am - 6pm, training with 30 international standard horses and winning specialist competitions against “big gun” competitors.

Not surprisingly she soon galloped through the ranks developing her horse skills from the very best in the business.

Funded by a lottery training grant, Lauren was spotted and hired by Olympic rider and trainer

Jane Bredin, who encouraged her to travel to Germany to buy her newly-backed warm-blood called Dorian.

“He was really naughty at the time,” says Lauren. “But despite putting me in hospital more times than I care to mention - I always forgave him because he seemed to do it with a smile on his face!”

A year with Jane in Wiltshire led to a meeting with Judy Harvey - an international judge who selects riders for the British teams.

At Judy’s stables in Buckinghamshire Lauren trained with many big names including double gold Olympic medalist Charlotte Dujardin.

It was this pedigree of training that inspired Lauren to launch her solo career, packing up her belongings, and Dorian, and heading to Scotland.

Says Lauren: “I moved to Edinburgh and in the first month there we won the Scottish Championships which was a massive boost to my fledgling business.”

Dressage star returns to native North West

Lauren riding Heidi at the Young Horse Championships 2014 at Hartpury

Her huge success was tragically marred by the loss of her beloved Dorian, who died after developing a cyst on his spinal cord.

“When Dorian died I was heartbroken and it seemed almost fateful when I saw an advert for a foal called Heidi - a relative of Dorian’s.

“I bought her without seeing her and drove 270 miles to pick her up from Sussex on the same day.

“Thankfully I couldn’t have picked a better foal. She is six now and has won me more events than any other horse - although I still miss Dorian every day.”

On Heidi, Lauren remains pretty much unbeaten - qualifying for all the big young horse championships last year - and more to come in 2015.

Lauren and her partner Peter now plan to build a bespoke stable yard and arena which will accompany their new home together.

“It is a very exciting time for us. I love training others and competing to better myself - and hope one day to compete in the Olympics.”

DO WE GENDER STEREOTYPE CHILDREN IN OUR CHOICE OF TOYS?

CHILD’s playToy companies which specifically label their products for girls or boys are “seriously

outdated” in their approach, says nationwide study of mums and dads.

Historically the toy industry has steered girls towards nurturing, role play and craft-based toys -whereas construction, action and science-based items were deemed more appropriate for boys.

But a brand new study by toy retailer Born Gifted has discovered a paradigm shift in consumers’ views on toy gender stereotypes.

In their survey a whopping 89% of respondents disagreed with the idea that science toys were

better suited to boys - two thirds believing construction and action

toys are just as appropriate for girls.

Nearly all customers polled felt that craft toys were not just for girls and three quarters thought

that role-play toys are equally suited to boys.

Even the dolls/nurturing category which until now has unswervingly

been the reserve of the fairer sex was voted equally suited

to boys by more than half the respondents.

The poll went on to investigate whether branding and marketing

played a role in consumer toy choice.

Asked if they would happily purchase a pink kitchen for a boy

over three quarters (76%) said no. However 85% of the 526

respondents said they would buy their son a toy kitchen in a

neutral colour.

DO WE GENDER STEREOTYPE CHILDREN IN OUR CHOICE OF TOYS?

I don’t mean a physical description, or a list of achievements/disappointments/embarrassments (and let me just say at this point that if you are the kind of person who thinks ‘my children have never embarrassed or disappointed me,’ you really should stop reading now because you are going to HATE this column).

What I mean is how, in as succinct a manner as possible, how would you describe the effect they have on your life. I can do it. Dead easy: ‘life-affirming pests.’

I love my kids to pieces. My wife and I have been blessed with two of the little idiots and we couldn’t be happier.

Warbling #1, is five and refuses to listen to anything other than an inner voice, a kind of built-in anti sat-nav which automatically detects the most destructive path to be taken between any two points. I mean why should beans go from plate to mouth, via fork, when it’s clearly way more fun for them to go from plate to cup –bean smoothie anyone? – to floor, to wall.

One Man, Two Kids

and a Lady

Comedian John Warburton on family life

It’s actually quite uncanny and probably some kind of super power. Seriously. I wouldn’t be surprised if Patrick Stewart arrived at our house in a wheelchair and told us Warbling #1 was actually Destructo-Girl and needed to be taken to a special mansion so she could be learn to use her gift for good rather than evil.

Al QuaedaThat said Warbling #2, is three and provides our lives with a constant soundtrack of

the completely bloody obvious: “That’s a bus, it’s a red bus. Is it a double decker? I went on a bus. Do you like trams? Do you like buses? I like buses. I like red buses, and green buses and … (starts singing the rainbow song). Ooh look a tractor. A blue tractor. I want to be a farmer (into Old Mcdonald’s Farm)…” And so on.

In fact I think his superpower may be better fitted to fighting evil than his sisters. If you want to take down Al Qaeda, forget about smartbombs and drone strikes, just send

in an inquisitive toddler – “I like your beard. Can I have a beard? Where do Beards come from? Father Christmas has got a gigantonormous beard. Do you like father Christmas? Who’s your favourite Tweenie? I like Jake. What’s an infidel? Do you know how to play hide and seek? Why are you running away?”

Life would be so much simpler without kids. I could read a paper or tablet without being strangled by my shirt as something climbs up my back using handfuls of my skin for purchase.

But you know what. Every annoying little moment, every heart-stopping, fear-inducing, red-mist descending, stupid question fills me with joy. . . eventually. Usually when wine has been introduced. And they’re in bed. Definitely when they’re in bed.

If you were asked to describe your kids how would you do it?

32 family • Parents & Children

TV GP Dr Hilary Jones is urging parents to look out for vital signs that their children are suffering from a food allergy or intolerance - as statistics soar to a staggering one in every four youngsters.

Speaking to Family Magazine, the telly medic warned that both allergies and intolerances are sharply on the rise – and in some cases potentially life threatening. Food allergy and food intolerance are often confused. Symptoms of a severe food allergic reaction is often immediate and include

tingling of the lips, swelling of the lips/tongue/throat, projectile vomiting, difficulty in breathing, faintness and collapsing.

While food intolerance is a collective name for a group of symptoms and illnesses connected to food with often delayed symptoms of bloating, nausea, migraine/headaches, skin rashes, joint pain, runny nose and IBS. Dr Hilary says: “Today there is a bigger range of foods available to children today than there ever has been. Children are exposed to new proteins which may explain why so many of them are suffering.

“We are just waking up to this field as doctors. If you take your dog, for example, to the vet they will say ‘what are you feeding it on?’

“Nobody really asks us what we are eating. When you can’t find anything else causing the symptoms, then people should consider food intolerance.”

Dr Hilary suggests the first step should be visiting your GP and avoiding “unscientific, unproven” centres that claim to diagnose food intolerance.

He adds: “It’s tricky. Parents always see their doctor first for a very careful clinical history to see if it’s likely they might have a genuine food intolerance.

“Secondly consider having IGG testing which is an anti-body test from a reputable company with scientific validation – such as York Test.”

Symptoms of an immediate food allergy:

Mild to moderate symptoms typically affect the skin, the respiratory system and the gut.• A flushed face, hives, a red and itchy rash around the mouth, tongue or eyes. This can spread across the entire body.• Mild swelling, particularly of the lips, eyes and face.• A runny or blocked nose, sneezing and watering eyes.• Nausea and vomiting, tummy cramps and diarrhoea.• A scratchy or itchy mouth and throat.

Severe symptoms (anaphylaxis). These require urgent medical attention.

• Wheezing or chest tightness, similar to a severe asthma attack.• Swelling of the tongue and throat, restricting the airways. This can cause noisy breathing (especially on breathing in), a cough or a change in voice• A sudden drop in blood pressure (called hypotension) leading to shock.• Dizziness, confusion, collapse, loss of consciousness and sometimes coma.

BOLTON SCHOOL TO CELEBRATE 100 AND 500 YEAR ANNIVERSARIES

Join us at the School’s Bridgewater Hall Gala Concert A spectacular event you will never forget

Bolton School is busy preparing for its 100 and 500 Year Celebrations, which will run this year and next.

2015 marks the centenary of the Bolton School Foundation.

In 1915, Lord Leverhulme brought together Bolton Grammar School for Boys and Bolton High School for Girls under one foundation sited on Chorley New Road. They were split into the Boys’ and Girls’ Divisions that we know today.

In 1516, Bolton Grammar School for Boys was recorded as “a going concern”. This is the earliest known reference to the school which would ultimately form Bolton School Boys’ Division.

It is also the first record of a school in Bolton, and one of the earliest in Lancashire. Consequently 2016 is the 500th anniversary of education in Bolton.

The school is planning a number of 100/500 Celebrations events both for alumni and for current

staff and pupils. The celebrations will begin in

March with a School concert at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, which will be followed by a Centenary Dinner for former Captains and Head Girls of the School.

A day of Sports Reunion Matches with a Celebration Dinner will take place in July and a Grand Reunion Weekend in September.

The Parents’ Associations are jointly organising a family fun day on the 28th of June. In June 2016, there will be an Anniversary Celebration Ball for the Friends of Bolton School.

There will be a number of celebratory events for current

pupils that run over the two year period including a programme of lectures open to the entire School community.

Alumni of Bolton School have nominated their top ‘100 Objects’ which encapsulate their time at school, and these memories will be compiled into a digital ‘Memory Book’. A commemorative publication, The Best of Both Worlds, has also been commissioned to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Foundation and will be published in November 2015.

Since 2010, as part of the build-up to the 100/500 Celebration, the School has been commemorating a number of clubs and societies which have been active for a whole century. This has involved inviting back alumni such as Chess Grandmaster Nigel Short, royal photographer Ian Jones, and the Old Boltonians’ AFC to mark the various anniversaries. The Decade of Centenaries will continue until 2019.

Bolton School will hold a Gala Concert at the Bridgewater Hall on Tuesday 10 March (7.30pm). The musical extravaganza will be one of many celebrations over the 2015-16 period as the School celebrates 100

and 500 year anniversaries.

The concert will combine the musical talents of girls and boys across both Divisions of the School and will feature performances from all senior joint ensembles

and the newly formed ‘Friends of Bolton School Choir’. There will also be participation from both the girls’ and

boys’ Junior Schools and Beech House Infants. Year 7 (over 250 boys and girls) will perform a number of vocal items, including a selection of popular songs

and a spectacular World War I finale with lots of audience participation.

The evening promises to be a spectacular event and an experience that participants and audience will never forget!

Tickets are free of charge and are available from: Bridgewater Hall box-office – 0161 907 9000.

family • Bolton School 35

What were your favourite subjects and who were your favourite teachers at School?

I have to say Mrs Fisher and Mrs Keenan whom I saw recently when I went back to School. What further study have you undertaken since leaving School?

I did Physical Geography at Nottingham University – I loved the field trips! Can’t say I have used much of it since other than the maths and stats. Since then I have done internal exams within the Police and have a diploma in coaching. What does your job involve and how did you progress to your current role?

During my second year at University I applied for the Police and got on the accelerated promotion scheme and joined Manchester, so at 21 was I pounding the streets of Salford. I worked my way through the ranks and have worked across a number of areas – heading the roads policing units, getting involved in the Common Wealth Games and travelling with Manchester United as I was the match commander there for three years – sounds fun, but I just saw a lot of airports and stadiums!

I am currently the Deputy Chief Constable at Cheshire Police which has about 3,500 staff. I have specific responsibility for units such as legal services, communications and discipline and am responsible for performance and our change programme which, given the current public sector cuts, is a challenge. The good thing about my role is that I am also operational and am a firearms and public order commander and oversee operational issues on a daily basis. I love the job and every day is different.

What/who has been your biggest inspiration? My parents – both have a real work ethic and growing up I

always saw they tried to help people, were non-judgemental and gave their time for others – in their 70s they are still active volunteers!Which skills do you consider to be essential for your job?

You can’t do this job unless you have a passion for it as it affects your daily life – I have constraints on me outside work. Many times I have been late for things as I have been tied up at work and when the kids were younger my mum had to sleep at our house when I was out on jobs at the last minute. Support and understanding is essential – I think it is like nursing and other public services in that respect. What do you like most about your job?

I feel I make a difference to peoples’ lives – I hope we make things better, or at least make people safer. It can be very frustrating, but very rewarding and people see the uniform and expect you to help and rely on you. What do you consider to be your greatest career achievement?

I recently was awarded the Queens Police Medal – this recognised the work in developing Neighbourhood Policing and working with partner organisations on issues such as domestic abuse and mental health. To be recognised for how you serve the public is a great feeling. How did Bolton School help you to be successful in your chosen career?

It made me challenge things when you think they are wrong and try to be the best you can be – I also learned never to give up.Why did you offer your assistance to School?

I have two girls at the School and I see them wrestle with what they should do – neither wants to join the Police. I can only offer advice from my experience and so I value other people telling of their experiences so they can think about alternative careers and options. It costs you nothing, you perhaps will help someone – why wouldn’t you come back to offer your assistance?

Cyber Security Minister Francis Maude says:“As part of this government’s long-term economic plan we want to

The cyber strategy includes:• Grants for colleges and universities to improve cyber security education and learning. • New ‘cyber camps’ and mentoring schemes to help computing graduates gain practical experience and start a career in cyber security.• A virtual hub to inspire students into cyber security careers and provide advice and information on job opportunities.

A Cabinet Office spokesman adds: “Increasing the number of people with the right cyber skills is vital for both government and industry as we collectively face the reality of cyber threats. I was dismissed from work with immediate effect and no prior notice, what rights may I have?

If you have two or more years’ service you have a right not to be unfairly dismissed. In some cases you may be able to claim for unfair dismissal with less than two years’ service – depending on the reason for dismissal. For example if dismissal was in connection with pregnancy or whistleblowing.

If the reason for dismissal was discriminatory as per the Equality Act 2010 you could bring a claim regardless of length of service. I suggest you look at your employment contract and any disciplinary procedure in place.

John Hassells, Head of Employment

As a shareholder in a private limited company, can I sell my shares to anyone?

If you personally own or control 100% of the Company, yes. If not, a company’s constitution will often prevent you doing so. If you want to realise the value of your shares when you retire, you must discuss your exit plans with your co-shareholders and enter into a shareholders’ agreement with them to provide for those exit plans.

Phil Stephenson, Corporate & Commercial Partner

My tenant has not paid the rent for two months. Is there anything I can do to get the property back?

Yes. If the tenancy is an Assured Shorthold Tenancy (AST) and the rent is monthly, you can serve a specific notice under the Housing Act to require possession to be given back. There are different types of notice, so be

sure the one you serve is correct. We advise seeking legal assistance with this.

Stephen McArdle, Commercial Litigation Associate Solicitor

My partner and I are going through a separation. We’re not married but have been living together for 10 years and split our income. Do I have rights to half of his assets and income?

People in “common law marriage” have no rights personally, against their partner although there are some rights in respect of children.

Whilst there have been discussions about giving cohabitees the same rights as married partners, nothing has come from this and there is no sign that the position will change in the foreseeable future.

Nick Lewis, Family Law Partner

If I take a lease of commercial premises do I need to worry about repair bills?

A tenant taking a full repairing lease is required to put and keep the property in a good state of repair and condition - and this is judged objectively, regardless of its condition at the start of the lease. Unwary tenants can be landed with a hefty repair bill unless they negotiate a limited repairing liability at the outset. We recommend that the current condition is recorded by photographs and a narrative so there can be no question about a tenant’s repairing liability during or at the end of its lease.

HOW TO SELL YOUR HOME IN THE SUMMERHome selling in the summer can be trickier than at other times of the year, as many people jet off

on holiday or have children at home. But for some people, selling ‘out of season’ is unavoidable and if you are one of them then we’ve put together some expert tips to help you clinch that crucial sale…

Lawn and OrderGrass grows more quickly during the

summer – so mowing twice a week should keep the garden looking neat. Concentrate on any brown patches that spoil the look.

Colour Me PrettyThrow a brightly coloured rug across

the patio and fresh, clean, cushions on your garden chairs. Don’t be afraid to dress the garden with lights.

Kerb AppealSpruce up a tired looking exterior by

painting your front door, adding some greenery and place lights symmetrically to achieve a feeling of balance.

Bring in the lightWalking in a house from bright

sunshine can have a gloomy effect on your rooms, so make sure you have as much light as possible streaming through the windows.

Freshen upFill the house with the natural scent

of freshly cut flowers. Not only do they smell better – the look better too – and estate agents say they help to sell homes.

Service with a sunny smileSmile, be polite and cheerful – and

have a summer drink on hand to offer your viewer. Fill the sink with ice and place bottles of water and juice to welcome them in.

SPRING CLEANING CHECKLISTThe tradition of spring cleaning the home was usually carried out in preparation for a religious feast.

These days we tend to blitz our pads to get rid of the winter grime in unforgiving spring sunshine.

Here’s a handy checklist to get you started . . .

Work down: Always start at the top of your house and work down. Start with the tidying, and then go on to

dust, clean, and vacuum, in that order.

Declutter: Dump the junk! If you haven’t used it in the past year, you

don’t need it.

Curtain call: If you don’t clean them thoroughly at least once a

year they will rot. Dry-clean velvet, tapestries, brocades, chenille, and

interlined curtains. Cotton and similar textiles can be washed.

Deep clean: Give your carpets a

deep clean at least twice a year. For a quick fix, leave baking soda on carpets

overnight to absorb musty odours.

Brighten up: Turn off your lights and remove their shades and bulbs. Do the same with chandeliers. Wash

the removable parts with regular washing up liquid and wipe the fixed

parts with a damp cloth.

Flip out: Flip your mattress every three months and switch head

and foot as well, which will help it maintain its shape. Vacuum your

mattress on a low setting.Wash walls from the bottom up, to

avoid streaking

Ornaments: Wash small knick-knacks instead of dusting

Floors: To remove heel marks from flooring, take a pencil eraser and rub

them off.

And finally… Don’t mix cleaning products.

Ammonia and bleach are toxic.

“RRG Lexus Bolton made my buying experience excellent because Chris the Salesman was very good, I felt at ease with him, and he was totally professional. Unlike a lot of car dealers I have dealt with in the past, he was one of the reasons for buying the car, as well as it being a very lovely car.” Mrs Lowe

When it comes to heart-stopping moments, watching your teenager take to the road for the first time is certainly up there on the parental ‘panic list’.

But with vastly lower insurance and running costs, slower travelling speeds and the ease of commuting and parking; mopeds, scooters and starter bikes are still a popular choice for youngsters selecting their first mode of transport.

Jonathan Hughes is the General Manager of Bolton Motorcycles which stocks a huge range of scooters, mopeds and superbikes for both first-time and experienced buyers.

He says: “The fear with a young or first time car driver is they can feel enclosed in their own little bubble - sometimes oblivious to speed and weather conditions outside of the car.

“Couple this with sky high insurance, running and maintenance costs and the practicalities of driving and parking in a city; there is an awful lot for parents to think about when investing in a vehicle.”

Bolton Motorcycles provides everything from road training and licensing to purchasing, repairs, clothing and free ‘drive in’ safety checks.

Adds Jonathan: “Every member of staff here is an expert in their own field and we pride ourselves on having the best record of excellence. We’re simply about providing high quality, all in one place.”

With a huge range of mopeds, scooters and 125cc learner bikes on display - (the main difference being engine size) - there is a multitude of styles, colours and models to choose from.

“Sure it’s about riding something that looks good for many customers,”

says Jonathan, “but also the practicalities such as choosing a model with lockable storage compartments for carrying text books to and from college or university.

“We cater for girls and boys - and both parents - our range covers the whole age spectrum of riders.”

The ‘cool factor’ of scooters has certainly been helped by celebrity devotees such as David Beckham, Jude Law, Emma Watson and a host of pop stars and models.

Financially, there are some very sound reasons for taking the two-wheel route, as Steve Muir of the Motorcycle Industry Association explains: “There are many financial benefits for choosing a bike.

“Some of our members allow a no claims bonus built up on a moped or scooter to be transferred to the first year of driving, which represents a saving of up to 20%.”

Too cool for school …but perfect for school leavers

A hybrid of motorcycle and scooter. The controls are simple, so you get the best of both worlds. Sit back, relax, twist and go! The overall package feels re-assuring on the road, solidly built and able to maintain its composure regardless of the situation.

Carli Smith is a staff writer for Twist & Go Magazine, published by Mortons Media Group Ltd.

“I got my first scooter when I was 16 – a Piaggio NRG – after completing my Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) on my 16th birthday.

I chose a scooter because I wanted to get out on the road as soon as I could by myself. Not only this, but scooters offer a cost effective form of transport – you can fill up the tank for around £5, and insurance is relatively inexpensive (in comparison to a car!)

I got a sense of freedom – but also responsibility. Scooter riding allows you to build up road knowledge.

Being out on the road for the first time was unbelievable – although as I was 16, and restricted to 28mph on a 50cc moped – it was great not to rely on my mum for a lift!

Mum worries about me whatever I do - I guess that’s a parent thing! I think that because she rides bikes she knows how much responsibility that riders have for their own safety – thinking ahead, riding safely and responsibly and not taking any unnecessary risks.”
