Welcome to this edition of Holy Family News. We wanted to put this magazine together to show the world all the great things that happen in our school and why we are so proud of our students and staff at Holy Family. We pride ourselves on the range of opportunities that are on offer to our young people and I hope that reading the magazine gives you some insight into the life of our school and encourages you to find out more about us.

This has been an exciting year for the school with the approval of the expansion of Holy Family and the multi-million-pound investment that will be made in the school in the coming year. By September 2017 we shall have a whole range of new facilities including a full size sports hall, a fitness suite, new RE classrooms on the Wiseman site, a new 8 classroom block on the Walthamstow site, new Learning Resource Centres on both sites, extended technology and art rooms and new science labs on the Walthamstow site, a lecture theatre on the Wiseman site and new chaplaincy spaces on both sites. In addition, there will be improvements to landscaping and circulation routes and lots of behind the scenes repairs and maintenance which we have been awaiting for some time.

The new accommodation will provide us with state of the art facilities to truly take Holy Family forward in the years ahead and we are all looking forward to the project.In this edition of Holy Family News, you can find out about our Oxbridge students and our links with Oxford and Cambridge universities, our extra-curricular trips and activities including drama, art and music and sport. There are articles about our residential visits both in the UK and overseas, our charitable fundraising as well as the individual awards and recognition that our students have achieved.

You can also find out more about the close links we have with our family of Catholic Schools in Waltham Forest through the Federation that we formed together a year ago and the excellent relationships we enjoy with each of the parishes in Waltham Forest who work closely with our chaplaincy team.

I’m sure you will agree we are a very diverse and busy community with a talented group of students and many very committed staff. I hope you enjoy reading the magazine!

Academic & Activities

Noben Returns from Oxford to Inspire StudentsStudents from Oxford University’s Afro Caribbean Society, including former student Noben Ndebele, visited Holy Family in April to talk to students in Years 9 and 10 about how they can achieve their goals in life.

It was great to have them with us and the students really enjoyed meeting them.

Oxbridge BoundCongratulations to Theo Lillington and Daniel Nieuwerf who are holding offers from Oxford and Cambridge for October 2016.

Theo is hoping to read English at Clare College, Cambridge. He writes

“Right now, the main things I’m looking forward to are the atmosphere of Cambridge and being surrounded by writers and lecturers with a real interest in their subject. I’m hoping to get involved in theatre and student journalism as well.”

Daniel Nieuwerf is hoping to read mathematics at Pembroke College, Oxford.

“The thing I am looking forward to most is learning more about my subject and being taught by some of the most skilled mathematicians in the world.”

Easter at Cambridge UniversityI have truly enjoyed the week I have spent at Cambridge and strongly believe Holy Family offering ‘Teach First’ opportunities to the future year 12s would be very beneficial for them. The Easter school offered taster sessions for the course that I hope to do in the future. This gave me the opportunity to experience lectures in my subject area and also to conduct practicals.

The lecturers were open to any questions that we had about the specific subject area and the application process for applying to Cambridge.

The sessions were held in different colleges and this gave us an opportunity to experience a collegiate style of university. Also, on the Thursday evening we had a formal dinner which I felt has challenged me to be more confident, I also felt that many of the stereotypes about applying to Oxbridge were torn down. Most importantly, it was fun. The food and accommodation were great!

Creative Arts

Lilia’s Sculpture On the Fourth PlinthCongratulations! Lilia Bogdan in 8A has won a prize in the competition for school students to design a sculpture to go on the 4th plinth in Trafalgar Square. The competition, organised by the Mayor of London attracted over 4000 entries so many congratulations to Lilia on her winning design.

Spaghetti & Strawberry Lace Towers!An Enrichment day was held in October 2015 giving students the opportunity to embark on activities they wouldn’t normally do while building on many skills.

Students of all ages were placed in House groups, the sessions allowed students to exercise a variety of skills including a team building session where they had to build a tower out of spaghetti and strawberry laces. Black History Month was also incorporated with students making clay pots using traditional African designs.

Overall the enrichment day was a huge success with the younger students working really well with the older students.

Down the Rabbit Hole at the British LibraryIn December Year 7 visited the Alice in Wonderland Exhibition at The British Library. Danyal’s review was very inspiring….

There is a section for each chapter which consists of a brief summary, pop-up pictures and mirrors with engraved pictures of the wonderland world. Following the trail, you can actually see the original book as Lewis Carroll wrote it. You can also see how it got edited and in what order.

There is a lot of technology in the exhibition. For example, there is a small touch screen board where you can read from the first edition. There is even a PlayStation with an interactive game! Danyal 7I

School Trips

Doctors for a Day In March a group of year 8 students attended the Outreach for Medicine Activity Day at King’s College London.

Various interactive stations were on offer throughout the day. During the first half of the day students learnt about the effects of smoking and drinking alcohol on the body, they were required to complete an obstacle course whilst wearing ‘drunk goggles’ to show how alcohol changes vision and judgement.

Most students did not finish the obstacle course without knocking the majority of cones over! A campus tour was then given where students were taken to labs, lecture rooms and the top floor of Guy’s Hospital which did not only hold another lecture room, but also a beautiful view of London.

The second half of the day consisted of stations demonstrating the skills used by doctors such as taking blood pressure, taking blood and stitching wounds. Students were given fake arms connected to blood pumps and were required to draw blood from the veins using real needles where they found that extracting blood from the body was not as easy as it looks. Overall the day was very successful, we had amazing feedback from the students with over half of them now considering studying medicine in the future.

Colomendy Here We ComeThe geography trip to North Wales was a great success and the students had a great time taking part in a range of exciting activities.

The centre staff were very pleased with the behaviour of our students and our thanks to Mr Shannon, Ms Connolly and Ms Lippa for giving up their time to accompany the students.

GCSE Revision at Chigwell ConventYear 11 pupils enjoyed a weekend residential at Chigwell convent during the Easter holiday.

Mr Shannon and Mr Asemota led the maths seminars while Ms Radley and Ms Cowburn led the English seminars. All those who attended felt that it was a really valuable experience and were sure that it would improve their revision programmes.

Making Enigma Machines out of Cans of PringlesDuring our TeenTech trip, we went through a series of activities to test and expand our knowledge of cyber security as well as technology.

It was an enjoyable experience surrounded by experts from a range of different jobs based on cyber security that I had no clue existed. One activity that stood out for me was making an Enigma machine out of a Pringles’ can. You see exactly how intricate and secure the Enigma machine was and how difficult it is to encrypt any secret messages.

We were even lucky enough to talk to some workers from GCHQ who brought a robot that they have been trying to break to see if there is a gap (like hackers do.) It nearly broke itself by a failed attempt to sit down. This trip has definitely broadened my knowledge on cyber security, I’ll be changing my passwords!

School Trips

Maths, Media and Mickey MouseYear 10 maths and media students spent half term enjoying the Magic of Disney!

Students attended a fun packed three days to Disneyland Paris. The media students attended seminars that gave an insight to Disney as a brand and how they use the genre to create films that become timeless classics. Maths seminars discussed everything from the velocity of rollercoasters to how many flowers are needed for the circumference of a flowerbed! Media students also had the opportunity to create their own advert which would encourage visitors to the parks; the Holy Family advert spoke to all the teen thrill seekers out there – challenging them to try the top adrenaline rides. And of course for market research purposes our students had to test these rides out!

Maths students had the opportunity to design their own rollercoaster taking into account how many people could ride within an hour? How much track it would use? What would be the top speed? Students presented their ideas to Disney officials; who knows, you may see a Holy Family rollercoaster in the near future!

Christmas in the Community

Carol Singing at Selbourne WalkOver £200.00 was raised by the choir and the Glee Club over two evenings outside Selbourne Walk Shopping Centre. Pupils and staff from across the school took part in the carol singing.

The money raised was donated to the Christian Kitchen which provides food for the homeless over Christmas and throughout the year.

Christmas CrackersIn December the Year 11 ASDAN group arranged a Christmas party for the senior citizens at Alliston House, a local care home for the elderly. The students had raised over £200.00 through fund raising activities and with this they were able to buy food, Christmas crackers, decorations and prizes for Bingo games. Each of the residents was presented with a card and a small gift.

Staff and residents at the care home were extremely pleased and wrote to the school saying. “Huge thank you to your marvellous young people. You can be proud of them. They really made everyone’s day.”

General & Awards

Life in the Arctic FreezerHoly Family’s budding scientists experienced life inside the Arctic circle during a live video chat with researcher Jamie Buchanan-Dunlop.

Jamie took a break from abseiling into glaciers and measuring them with lasers, to answer lots of questions posed by our students.

Jamie was very impressed with the quality and range of the questions. He shared first hand experiences of global warming, with a 10C temperature rise compared to 2015, and experiencing rain, rather than snow, for the first time.

Pupils commented on how much they enjoyed having the chance to talk to a “real” scientist, and how surprised they were that science doesn’t just happen in laboratories!

Seeds from Space The Space Association has an exciting project for schools which we are involved in. Seeds which have been sent into space and returned to earth have been delivered into our school.

Some of our Year 8 students have planted these seeds as part of a nationwide experiment. The Space Association wants pupils to embark on a voyage of discovery to see what growing plants in space can teach us about life on Earth and whether we can sustain human life in space.

The project is aimed at inspiring pupils to think scientifically and helping them to see the potential of future careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).

General & Awards

Astronauts Wanted, No Experience Necessary!Congratulations to the Year 7 students who applied to the advert ‘Astronaut wanted. No experience necessary’ and won the amazing opportunity to listen to a live conference hosted by Helen Sharman and Imperial College, London with 15 European astronauts. The students took part in a live Q&A session via Twitter. Among the winners was Aleena 7R and here is an extract from her winning application.

I am writing this letter to explain why I am the person who should go to space without experience necessary. First of all, I know that when you are in space you become taller.

Another change to the human body in micro-gravity is that the spine straightens out, as gravity is not pushing you down. In fact, you can be up to as much as 5cm taller in the Space Station. This is a once in a life time chance for me to experience a huge change to my body.

In addition, I’ve always wondered: how did life begin, how did the universe begin, how was our world created and are we alone? These questions and others have been asked by every generation since the dawn of time. Even if I have these questions I still believe that God has created the Universe but I still think there must have been something that God did before he created Earth so I ‘want’ to find it out. Therefore, I am the Astronaut needed with no experience necessary. Sincerely, Aleena 7R

Shine On Gilwell ParkAs usual, the Shine weekend was enjoyed by pupils and staff alike.

Students took part in a trip to Gillwell Park and took part in a variety of activities including zip wire, a mission impossible challenge, abseiling, aerial trekking and archery. All students got involved and worked well as a team to complete the challenges they faced.

Summer FunOnce again, during the first two weeks of the summer holiday, the Walthamstow House site played host to the year 7 summer school.

A selection of new students were invited to attend and spent the time taking part in a variety of activities designed to improve their skills in maths, English, drama, music and science.

They also spent two days on school trips to Ripley’s Believe it or Not and The Cutty Sark.The students really enjoyed their time and would like summer school to continue.

Vivo AmbassadorsA new student reward scheme was launched in September.

Education is about all round development and not just learning facts. Part of this is encouraging good behaviour, giving recognition to children when they do well and motivating them to do even better.

Vivo enables us to provide points to reward positive behaviour and learning. Children can save up their Vivos in a personal account and exchange them for a range of items in our online “shop”. Vivos give parents the opportunity to see the progress their children are making and to celebrate, with us, their successes.

General & Awards

Faraday challenge DayThe Challenge was all about letting students be creative and using their own problem solving skills to explore their capabilities as engineers.

By taking part in the Challenge Day, the students were eligible to receive a CREST Discovery Award from the British Science Association and a trophy was to be awarded to the winning school. The students were given a loose brief to create a product using the BBC Microbit. The product had to fit in with either health, lifestyle, leisure or sport, which allowed the students to be extremely creative as there were endless possibilities of what the finished product could be.

Jack Petchy Awards WinnersOn Tuesday, 10th November 2015, the Jack Petchey Award Winners from last academic year 2014-15 received their medallions at this amazing event in front of their parents and VIPs.

The winners were Fope Balogun, Charles Mokoko, Angela Amazigo, Dasha Mbo, Adam Sygut, Aji Jacob, Joel Hippolyte, Sian Elias, Dominic Coskin. The Leader Award Prize went to Mr Nandlal, our RM teacher and STEM leader who had worked tirelessly on making STEM club an exciting opportunity for our students at Holy Family.

These laureates had been previously nominated by their peers and teachers for either their outstanding achievement or outstanding contribution to the school community and were invited to this celebration along with other winners from 14 other schools throughout the borough of Waltham Forest. Our winners generously donated their £200 grants which amount to a total of £1800, to various departments of their own choice.

Former pupil, Mr Pauric Whelan visited Holy Family to present a talk to students aspiring to become engineers in the future.

Mr Whelan is currently working for FoundOcean Inc, an international offshore engineering firm. Currently he is working on a project based in Africa. One of his proudest constructions was laying the foundations for The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Stadium, London.

Mr Whelan’s ambitions to become an engineer started in sixth form and he was later inspired by his father. After A levels he took a degree in Civil Engineering at King’s College, London University. The talk was followed by a question and answer session.

Dr Stone goes to

Buckingham PalaceOn the 16th May I was privileged to be at a ceremony in the gardens of Buckingham Palace where I was presented with a commemorative plaque to mark the involvement of Holy Family in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. I was presented with the plaque by comedian Alistair McGowan who entertained the group I was part of with a range of excellent impersonations! We have many students involved in the D of E scheme, which is overseen by Mr Wilbraham and supported by many other staff. This year we even have our first cohort of students going for the gold award. It is the 60th anniversary of the scheme and you may like to get involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Diamond Challenge to mark this occasion. The Day of the Girl Eight girls attended an International women’s day with mentoring by high profile women including our local MP Stella Creasy. Our head girl, Florence Ayoade, was interviewed by Radio 1. Our girls were outstanding and the organisers wrote to the school praising them for their contributions.

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze & Silver AwardsOn Thursday 19th November students attended the Waltham Forest Duke of Edinburgh Awards presentation evening to celebrate the completion of their awards. 15 students received their Bronze Awards and 4 were recipients of the Silver Award which were presented by Her Worshipful Mayor of Waltham Forest. Students representing Holy Family were one of the largest groups receiving awards on the night.

The students have spent the last 12 months working hard to balance their studies with completing the award and are great role models for other students in the school. We look forward to these students progressing on to Silver and Gold levels of the Award in the coming year.

A Holocaust Survivor visits Holy FamilyOn the last day of the spring half term, history students were fortunate to hear the testimony of Mr Vulkan. As a young boy he lived in Vienna when the Nazis took control of Austria in 1938. His life immediately changed and he was ostracised at school by his friends. Mr Vulkan described how he and his family escaped arrest when a family friend forewarned them. He arrived in Britain in 1940 where he has lived ever since. He explained how lucky he and his family were as most of his aunts, uncles and cousins died in the concentration camps.

Sports Events

England Call Up for JamieJamie Bowden in Year 10 was selected by the FA to play for England Schoolboys against the USA in February. Jamie played in both challenge games and scored a goal.

The matches took place at the FA Centre of Excellence in Burton on Trent. Jamie also plays for the Tottenham Hotspur Academy and captained the Year 8 school team that reached the semi-final of the Essex cup two years ago.

Basketball HotshotsIt was the end of the Basketball competition for the Year 11 girls team who were beaten in the borough semi-final by a very good Lammas team.

The Holy Family team started the game well and showed great commitment and spirit. Excellent defence kept Holy Family within touching distance but the strength and superior offence displayed by Lammas gave them a comfortable win. I would like to thank the Holy Family team for their dedication and success over the last 5 years and hope they have enjoyed representing their school. They have been a pleasure to coach.

Netball: Year 8 are Borough Champions A fantastic performance at the borough netball rally saw the year 8 team progress to the final.

They lost out to a very strong Forest School team but it was a huge achievement to pick up silver medals. A closely fought game saw Holy Family beating Frederick Bremer 8-6 to win the league. Both teams were struggling to score baskets but Holy Family managed to edge into the lead. Some great passing allowed HF to keep the ball and along with their structured defence saw the game out.

A fantastic result and worthy champions. Well done to all girls.

Year 9 Netball Representing Waltham ForestRedbridge Sports Centre in Barkingside were the hosts of the Waltham Forest Netball Rally, which took place on Wednesday 7th October 2015. Holy Family’s Year 9 netball team participated and achieved the position of runners up beating all teams apart from the winners!

They went on to represent Waltham Forest in the Essex Metropolitan County Rally on Sunday 18th October 2015. Well done to all.

Chaplaincy Corner

Bishop Alan opens The Aquinas Centre Our new Sixth Form Building, The Aquinas Centre, was formally blessed and opened by Bishop Alan on Friday 18th September. It is very light and airy and provides us with two new classrooms, a study room, a computer room and office spaces. A massive thanks to everyone who has supported the ‘buy a brick’ campaign and we hope you will feel that your generosity has been worth it and is appreciated.

The Whole School Mass at the Assembly RoomsThe Annual School Mass took place on Thursday 11th November, led by Fr Maurice Gordon.

This is the only occasion during the year when the entire school community comes together and it is also a time to remember those associated with the school who have died, including students, staff, governors and Deanery Priests.

House SaintsOur House Leaders and Saints:Mrs Rocks (St. Anne), Ms Carrick (St. Stephen) Ms Ryan (St. Philomena), Ms Hampshire (St. Ignatius), Mrs Hutton (St. Richard) Ms Ward (St. Elizabeth)

A range of activities have taken place including a spelling BEE, table tennis tournament, a quiz and dodgeball competitions.

Every member of Holy Family including students, teachers, support and administrative staff are allocated to a House. This is to give everyone a sense of identity and belonging. Staff events will encourage competition and well-being as well as contributing valuable points to the Houses. The House Activities culminated with Sports Day in July when students competed in Houses for the first time.

Chaplaincy Corner

Fair Trade – “Sit Down for Breakfast, Stand Up for Farmers”On the lower site, the breakfast club joined the “Sit down for breakfast, stand up for farmers!” event on March 1st.

The Co-op in Wood Street kindly donated breakfast items, including Fairtrade bananas. Fairtrade is a simple way to make a difference by thinking carefully about our everyday choices. It’s about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for small-scale farmers. Farmers and producers in the developing world – and some closer to home – are often the ones who bear the costs and risks of trade, while global companies make the profits. Martin Luther King said, “Before you finish eating breakfast in the morning, you’ve depended on more than half the world”. We all enjoy our morning coffee, tea, sugar and juice, please think about buying Fairtrade products. You can find them on most supermarket shelves.

The Wall of MercyChloe Contaldo, 8S writes: “The school’s Justice and Peace group went on a trip to Brentwood Cathedral. We looked around the Cathedral with the guidance of Fr Martin and we learnt a lot. Around the church there were many holy objects which we were told about and personally my favourite was the golden eagle near the altar. We saw the Holy Door which was decorated for the Year of Mercy, it was very beautiful and was painted many different colours, but unfortunately all the décor is going to be taken off after this year.

The doors on the outside have the words “merciful like the father” written in neon blue which really stands out, especially at night. We had the opportunity to see amazing graffiti art saying “merciful” spray painted on a wall in the grounds of the Cathedral.”

HCPT 60th AnniversaryDuring the Easter holiday this year, I went on a pilgrimage to Lourdes with HCPT Group 161.

It was an amazing opportunity and I had great fun. We experienced many fabulous activities. Helping to care for children with different needs was life changing and has given me many skills and qualities that I hope will be with me forever. The support given to our HCPT group by Holy Family School is invaluable, from enabling us to carry out a variety of fund-raising activities (from non-uniform days to dinner dances) to allowing me to include my charity work in my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze qualification.

Caribbean EveningIn October we had another hugely enjoyable Caribbean themed social evening. Great numbers came to support the event which was enjoyed by all. Thanks to Mrs Lazarus and her team for organising such a wonderful evening, which has become an annual fixture in our calendar and thanks to all who came.

Chaplaincy Corner

Citizenship AwardNathan and I received the Catholic Schools’ Citizenship Award because we dedicated our time to email and visit big companies such as Hotel Chocolate, Aroma, Greggs, Hummingbird bakery, Percy Ingles and many more.

We thought it was time to give back and I chose Great Ormond Street as our charity because I have used their facilities in the past.

We put our hearts and souls into this, running around Liverpool Street station and Westfield shopping centre collecting donations for our lucky dip which raised £45.00. In all we raised £365.00 thanks to the free donations offered by many of the companies. If you don’t ask you don’t get. We are really proud of the amount we raised and hope it will put a smile on a child’s face at GOS hospital.

Federation Mass

Federation MassOn a rainy morning in March, almost 400 students and staff from the six Catholic schools in the Waltham Forest Federation came together to celebrate their first Mass at Our Lady & St George parish.

The entrance procession was colourful with representatives from each school carrying their flags and mission statements.

Year 6 students from Our Lady & St George’s Primary School, St Joseph’s Juniors, St Mary’s Catholic Primary School and St Patrick’s Primary School together with Year 2 students from St Joseph’s and Our Lady & St George’s were joined by students from each form group in Holy Family Secondary School.

The Mass was an impressive and joyous occasion, with mime, prayers and musical contributions from the primary schools and readings from Holy Family Catholic School.

Charity Events

In April Ms Cowburn and Mr Graefe completed the London Marathon and raised thousands of pounds for charity. In fact, Mr Graefe ran two marathons in the space of one week, having completed the Brighton

Marathon on the previous Sunday. Ms Cowburn raised almost £1,500 for Clic Sargent which supports children with cancer. Mr Graefe raised over £500 for our school HCPT team - Group 161.
