PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS® in the NEWS
Could you really make a difference? Yes!
I have been close to individuals who have made positive
impacts on the world in which we live. Of course no
person has had more influence in the world than Jesus
the Christ. Soon we will celebrate His birth.
Our calendar was changed because of Jesus. Churches
were constructed around the world in His name. Wars
were fought, religions established, coins and money
circulated in His name. Slogans written by the thousands.
Of course, I never met Jesus during His 33 years of
ministry on this earth. As a sinner I probably never will
meet Him. But I will not stop trying to be a better person.
As you may know, PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS® is near
and dear to my heart. And it has been a force for good
for patients in many states for 30 years. More than
491,000 gifts have been presented to patients over all
those years. I suspect that they have cost an estimated
$4.9 million or more.
One person enabled this program to grow. John Howell
was Vice President and General Manager of WPXI-TV in
Pittsburgh in 1985. John agreed to sponsor the two-
year-old PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS® program, and the
FAITH & WORK 4
Your PotentialA Mess age f rom W i l l i a m V . D a y
rest is history. His successor, Ray Carter, has embraced the
program. Ray and his family made PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS®
their Christmas tradition of visiting one patient in particular for
many years, Grace McCune. Unfortunately, Grace died in March
of 2012. She was 104 years old. And the Carters embraced a new
patient last Christmas, continuing their family tradition.
We at St. Barnabas are standing on the shoulders of Gouverneur
Hance who founded the organization in 1900. Hance was a
devoted Christian and humanitarian. An amazing man. I never
met him but I stand in his long shadow.
Think about how Walt Disney changed the world. And Dr.
Jonas Salk and the prevention of polio. And each President of
the United States.
Each of us is born with equal opportunity to help others. We can
do so in our own little ways. How? By following the Manufacturer’s
handbook. The Bible.
Thank you…yes you…for supporting the work we try to do to
bring happiness into the lives of our residents, patients, volunteers
and staff. You really can make a difference.
God bless and Merry Christmas,
WVD

WPXI-TV anchors Peggy Finnegan and David Johnson team up with St. Barnabas PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS® spokesperson Valerie Day Wilden to celebrate the 30th PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS® campaign by presenting the first gift of the season to St. Barnabas Nursing Home patient Emma Oresic, 87, on WPXI-TV’s news set. Peggy and David co-chair the Christmas campaign.
Christmas Wishes Come True
Because of You!
More than 13,000 patients in
skilled and living assistance
facilities have drawn up their
wish lists for PRESENTS FOR PATIENTS®
donors. Only you, your church, your
organization, your business, your friends
and your family can make their wishes
come true.
First, you can be matched directly with a
patient in a facility near your home or
office. You can shop from their wish list,
schedule a visit and spend a few precious
moments with a lonely patient. Invite your
family or neighbors to join you and visit 10
patients that day, instead of just one.
What a lovely way to celebrate a
blessed holiday.
For those who want to participate
but cannot shop or visit,
send a donation and
our volunteers will
shop and deliver the
gift in your name. Or even
better, send a contribution and
purchase one of the special gifts
that we know are popular
with patients.

But, if things are tight this year, and you still want to be part of a
wondrous Christmas morning for just one special patient, send

FAITH & WORK8
Yeah Team! Star player Donnie Hersh owes his goal line drive to recovery to a great St. Barnabas Nursing Home team: (l to r.) Registered dietician Amanda Borland, certified nursing assistant Jacob Bash and registered nurse Lu Ann Duster.
FAITH & WORK 9
Donnie Hersh has become the
unofficial poster patient and
greeter for St. Barnabas Nursing
Home…talking to all the visitors, assisting
other patients in adjusting to life in a
nursing home and charming all the staff.
In the 33 years he has lived at St. Barnabas,
Donnie has endured many complications
due to his cerebral palsy, many of them
life threatening…pneumonia, congestive
heart failure, thrombectomy (surgical
removal of a blood clot from a blood
vessel), collapsed lung, respiratory
failure, tracheotomy.
But none have been as personally devastating
as the colostomy Donnie underwent in
August of this year.
Due to a worsening condition of his colon
and gastrointestinal system, Donnie was at
high risk for a perforated bowel, obstruction,
and possibly even death without a colostomy.
After extensive education and with the
support of doctors, caring parents and
staff, Donnie decided to have the colostomy.
While awaiting the procedure, he often
confided his fears to his favorite primary
nurse, Lu Ann Duster, who always made
herself available to listen and reassure him.
The operation was a success, but it was a
long road to recovery, starting with a
ventilator to help him breathe. Donnie
had to have a feeding tube to provide
weeks of post surgery and he was back,
greeting visitors from his favorite spot
behind the switchboard, wearing that
wonderful smile.
This is the Donnie the staff have learned
to love…a witty humorist, an expert on
movie trivia, an avid fan of the Dallas
Cowboys and actress Halle Berry, and a
great listener. He loves to hear stories
about
everyone’s
families, their
vacations,
anything that
gives him a
glimpse of life
he has never
been able to
experience
first-hand.
With God’s
help and the support of the thoughtful
donors to the St. Barnabas Free Care
Fund along with the care provided by a
devoted staff, Donnie will continue to
greet the world with a smile and his
favorite one-liner.
The estimated cost of Donnie’s care is
$3,210 a month. If you would like to
contribute to his care, send your
donation, payable to St. Barnabas
Charities, in Donnie’s honor, in the
enclosed envelope or go online at
www.StBarnabasCharities.com.
calories and nutrients. It was a difficult
time. Registered dietician Amanda
Borland and the nursing staff used all of
their professional skills to aid in the
healing and prevent weight loss and
pressure ulcers.
Not being able to eat upset Donnie. He
was afraid he would never be able to eat
again! Staff assured him his body just
needed time
and care to
heal from the
abdominal
surgery. After
a few weeks
of tube
feeding and
healing and
the help of
speech
therapy, foods
were gradually
re-introduced into Donnie’s diet. It took
time, but Donnie is eating his favorite
foods once again.
One thing Donnie did not have to worry
about – the cost of his care. The entire
medical procedure and recovery treatment
were covered by Medicaid and the
St. Barnabas Free Care Fund!
Despite the fact that Donnie – on a good
day – can only wiggle his nose, talk and
smile, he is far from depressed. Eight
Donnie Hersh Upbeat after Extensive Surgery
St. Barnabas is proud to announce an exciting new
acquisition enabling us to continue and extend our
mission of care to our residents, patients and community.
On Oct. 15, 2013, the St. Barnabas Land Trust officially acquired
Trees Manor, consisting of several buildings on 206 rolling,
wooded acres, from the Edith L. Trees Trust.
Trees Manor and St. Barnabas are linked geographically and
historically, but more importantly through their mission of
helping others. Trees Manor is located in Pine Township, just
minutes from St. Barnabas’ Gibsonia and Valencia campuses.
And both were built in the early 1900s. The Edith L. Trees Trust
and St. Barnabas Charities both exist to care for the less fortunate.
There is another significant connection between St. Barnabas
and Trees Manor.
Here We Grow Again!
FAITH & WORK 10
Trees Manor was originally the home of Joseph Clifton Trees and
Edith Trees, but for many years, even after the death of Joe and
Edith, it was home to their son, Joe Benedum Trees, who was
mentally retarded. For five to 10 years of his life, St. Barnabas
Home Care helped take care of Joe, and later, when he was
cared for privately at the Manor, St. Barnabas trained caregivers
joined his private staff and often brought him to St. Barnabas
Nursing Home for his haircuts. The Trees Trust expressed their
gratitude with annual donations. Joe Trees died in 2011 at the
age of 79.
The creation of long range plans for Trees Manor will be the
only major action taken for several years. Meanwhile, St. Barnabas
is committed to preserving, maintaining and refurbishing the
Manor House, while sustaining and revitalizing other Trees
structures and maintaining the natural environment. And the
name, Trees Manor will be kept in perpetuity.
FAITH & WORK 11
The October 15, 2013 signing ceremony for Trees Manor: (r. to l.) William V. Day, President, St. Barnabas Health System; John Curran, Chairman, St. Barnabas Board of Trustees; John Fencil, owner, American General Services Corporation; Murray Egan, Trustee, Edith L. Trees Charitable Trust; and Robert Loughran, Vice President of Trust Real Estate Services, PNC Bank, and a Trustee of the Edith L. Trees Charitable Trust.

Please DONATE!
Employees Put Their Dollars Where Their Work and Hearts AreAnnually St. Barnabas employees conduct a Special People
Campaign among their fellow employees to raise funds
to benefit the people they serve, the residents and
patients of St. Barnabas.
Headed by the current Hoppy Award (employee of the
year) winner, Kathy Drayer, and a committee of previous
Hoppy winners and 20-Year Club members, the Campaign
raises more than $20,000 each year in payroll deductions and
one-time gifts. St. Barnabas employees truly are Special People!
Double Powered Donations!St. Barnabas’ Beautiful Buys thrift shoppes offer friends and supporters
a double donor opportunity! You can donate your slightly-used
clothing or furniture and appliances you no longer need and receive a
tax deduction. And you can shop at either of the two shoppes for a
Christmas gift for that favorite niece or a table lamp for your side of
the bed, and your purchase helps support the St. Barnabas Free Care
Fund, since all proceeds from Beautiful Buys benefits the Fund. So
plan now to visit the Beautiful Buys shoppes at 421 Route 228 in East
Valencia, PA. and at 68 Dambach Road in Valencia.
Breaking Bread at Christmas
Following a century-old tradition,
St. Barnabas Charities will be inviting
anyone who is in need or alone at
Christmas to join us at our holiday
table. We will break bread and give
thanks and then share a turkey
dinner with all the trimmings.
Your donations help make this
possible. Please consider a donation
this Christmas for a lonely stranger or
a family in need of friends and food,
served with love. Send your check,
payable to St. Barnabas Charities, in
the enclosed envelope, designated

Memorygiving in
George Bluemling loved
Pittsburgh sports, especially
the Pirates. He never missed
listening to a game.
Once he said to his wife, Ruthanne, “I’ll
probably never live to see them make
the play-offs.” Unfortunately, he didn’t.
George died May 17, 2013, just at the
start of the Pirates first winning season
in over 20 years.
He also loved St. Barnabas and credited
St. Barnabas with saving his life. George
was seriously ill with Mercer, MRSA
infection when he was admitted to
St. Barnabas Nursing Home on Oct. 30,
2009. He was treated in the nursing
home for seven weeks, and then
St. Barnabas Home Care followed him
home until he made a full recovery.
George’s association with St. Barnabas
began around 1996 when he started
volunteering at the St. Barnabas Charities
annual June golf open and their PRESENTS
FOR PATIENTS® Christmas program.
Three years later, he
married Ruthanne and she,
too, began volunteering for
St. Barnabas.
Both George and Ruthanne
had been widowed for
several years. They had met
through their spouses at
Monaca High School class
reunions. George had
been born and raised in
Sharpsburg, PA and
graduated from St. Mary's High School
in Sharpsburg before earning a B.S. in
Accounting at Duquesne University.
According to Ruthanne, all of his life had
been spent working for the government
in some way, first as a postman, then
serving in the U.S. Army, and finally as a
CPA for the IRS before retiring.
George’s main interests in life were his
church, Pittsburgh sports, golf and
St. Barnabas.
“He had a deep affection for St. Barnabas,”
Ruthanne confided.
Family and friends of George
Bluemling have remembered
him with contributions to
St. Barnabas Charities. If you
would like to honor George’s
memory, please send your
memorial gift, payable to
St. Barnabas Charities, in the
enclosed envelope or go online at
