Information regarding Worship Services:

• A children’s program is conducted in the hall during the 9:00 am Sunday service.

• The last Sunday 9:00 am service of the month is run as an ‘All In’ service. This service has a children’s focus, and the children stay in during the full length of that service.

• Baptismal services of families with connection to the church are held in the service that the family has most connection with. Baptismal services of families wholly unconnected to the life of the church are held in a separate service.

• From the first Sunday after Christmas until the end of January, there is only one service held each week. That is held at 8:00 am on Sunday.

• Currently, the church has a choir, a singing group and a youth orchestra. Each of these occasionally takes part in the Sunday 9:00 am and 5:30 pm services.

• A role is played by the priest in supporting services in aged-care facilities in the Parish.

• The ‘Ablaze’ service has strong music focus. It is also based on the second order of the APBA.

The Faith Community at St Barnabas

The Parish has approximately 180 people on the church roll. During Christmas and Easter there can be more than that number in church. In a regular week, over the four weekly services, the total number of communicants will be between 100 and 120. The congregation can be described as diverse in several ways. Ethnically, theologically and liturgically, there is a range. Also, there are four different ‘flavours’ to the four different weekly congregations, but the differences are small. People from the different ecclesiastical approaches coexist very well, with respect and tolerance across differences. There have been issues that could have acted to arouse division, but so far these have been managed well and have not caused problems. The age profile of the congregation is toward the older end. Many people are over 60 years of age. There are smaller numbers of young adults and children. There is a youth group held each Friday evening. Most of the youth are not from church families.

Resources

Financial Position

Church income has been reasonably stable for a few years. There has been a small increase over the past two years. The principal sources of income are:

• Offerings

• Rental from the two church residences

• Rental from hire of the hall

• Rental from the OSHC

• Rental from MU shop

• Contribution from SAELC

• Fundraising

• Diocesan contribution to support curate In January 2017 a youth worker was engaged (part-time), and in November 2017 a Curate was accepted (with a subsidy from the Diocese). The extra staffing has been appreciated by the church, but the income has not risen to accommodate that level of staffing. The drain on funds cannot be sustained. Our current income is adequate to support one full-time Priest in Charge (/Rector), associated necessary ancillary services and essential costs, including:

• part-time office and ancillary support,

• necessary expenditure for routine maintenance,

• office equipment and supplies

• essential services (Electricity, phone, etc)

• ministry resources

• provision of funds set aside to allow for unexpected major maintenance and equipment replacement. Note: The church currently has funds set aside to cover equipment replacement, major

routine maintenance requirements and contingency for unforeseen future major expenditures. On top of these funds, there is also a small surplus.

Parish Staffing Going Forward

Considering the above, regarding finances and income, going forward the church’s staffing will consist of:

• Priest in Charge (/Rector).

• Locums to cover services when priest is on leave.

• Part-time office support (20 hours).

• Ancillary support (bookkeeping / cleaning/ grounds). A few hours per fortnight for each.

Property

The church owns two properties. There is a residence in Eight Mile Plains, and one on the Lister St property.

• The residence in Eight Mile Plains, is a four-bedroom brick and tile home. (currently rented)

• The Sunnybank property has two street frontages, Lister St and Young St. The property consists of five house blocks. There are four buildings on that property: o The church - seats approximately 300 (the building at the front of photo). o A 4-bedroom brick and tile residence – to the left of the church (currently rented) o A hall – directly behind church. The hall roof has solar cells fitted. o Church office and the OSHC share the fourth building (rear of photo)

Either of the residences can be made available for the new PIC.

All the above property is fully owned by St Barnabas. The church’s early learning centre, the ‘Sunnybank Anglican Early Learning Centre’ (SAELC), is conducted in a property that the church rents from the Qld Govt, in a nearby location (Everest St).
