August 2016. Since then he has been supported by our Renal Supportive Care Nurse Specialist who provides home visits and he now attends the Day Hospice once a week.

What’s been happening at St Ba rna bas?

St Barnabas is playing a key role in a new service called Echo (end of life care hub for Coastal West Sussex), which was

launched last October. A number of our patients are already using the service and over the next few months we hope many more will do so.

Staffed by trained nurses, Echo is a round-the-clock telephone support service for patients who are thought to be in the last 12 months of life. It can also be used by their carers, families or healthcare professionals. When someone contacts Echo, they speak to a trained nurse who can provide advice and support over the phone. If other services or healthcare professionals

need to be contacted or mobilised, the nurse can do this on the caller’s behalf.

Echo also holds and updates important information about patients and their care, which is shared among a number of different services that patients come into contact with. This means all the healthcare professionals involved in a patient’s care will be able to stay up to date with any changes to their care plan, so that they are better able to meet the patient’s expectations and wishes.

St Barnabas has played a significant role in the planning and delivery of this service. Our Community Palliative Care Team nurses and palliative care consultants are providing 24/7 advice and support to the Echo nurses. In

addition, our Hospice at Home team has formed a stronger link with the palliative care team at the hospital through the provision of a service that will help get people out of hospital more quickly, so that those who wish to die at home are able to do so.

You can find out more about Echo by visiting www.echocws.org

In our previous newsletters, we told you about the pioneering new developments St Barnabas House is undertaking as part of our vision

to extend our care to people in our community that we’ve been unable to help before.

Currently, we care for over 80% of local people with cancer and this will not change – we will continue to provide the very best care for these patients. However, the demand for end of life care is growing due to an ageing population and increasing numbers of people developing life-limiting conditions other than, or as well as, cancer. At St Barnabas, we would like to help everyone who needs our specialist care and to this end we have invested in four nurse specialists to help us reach people with advanced heart, kidney and liver failure and those

with advanced dementia. We would like to introduce you

to our Advanced Heart Failure Nurse Specialist, Michaela Wheatley.

“Many patients with end stage heart failure have specific needs and often the specialist support they require is not available to them. My role is to offer specialist palliative care to patients suffering with longstanding complex symptoms associated with heart failure. I visit patients in their own homes, at the hospice or at Worthing Hospital. I work closely with GPs and the hospital’s cardiology team to make sure we are supporting the people who need us most.

“Within just two months of the service being up and running I have been able to help 27 people, all in their preferred place of care. Of these, seven have sadly passed away, and it’s extremely likely that they would have died in hospital had they not been known to the Advanced Heart Failure Service.

“All the patients in my care know that they can call me with any concerns they may have, whether they are heart failure related or not. It is very reassuring to them to know that they have someone with specialist knowledge who they can contact easily

Hospice care pioneers

and who can visit them in their own homes.

“Most patients I see are no longer able to attend clinics at the hospital, and without this service would not receive any specialist support at all. It is at this stage in their illness that they develop complex problems and need specialist input the most.

“There really was a very big gap in healthcare for patients with advanced heart failure who are not able to attend the hospital. Although it is still early days, the feedback we have received about the service has been fantastic and patients and their relatives view the heart failure service as a lifeline.”

Max Caunhye is St Barnabas House’s Finance Director. He recently spent the day shadowing Dot Lawrence, a Community Nurse Specialist in the Community Palliative Care Team. Here

are Max’s impressions of his day with Dot and the fantastic work she and her team are doing in patients’ homes in our community.

“I observed Dot in the office first. She was typing up notes on the computer and she had to handle calls as well. One patient’s husband called who did not need direct help but seemed just to need some reassurance.

“We left the office at around 11am for our first visit, which was to see a new patient. He was 70 and dying of lung cancer. He was with his wife at the time of the visit. The visit lasted around an hour and a half, during which time Dot talked to them about medication, symptoms, DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) forms and counselling. There was a lot to cover but it was handled really well. The gentleman’s wife broke down in tears at times, and the care and understanding Dot provided was excellent. The patient seemed very pleased to see us and was happy with the suggestions for managing his pain. Both he and his wife were very open and honest about their concerns; they must have felt comfortable in Dot’s presence.

“The second visit was to an 85-year-old lady who lived alone and had no children. She had breast cancer and was quite ill. She had a dressing on her breast and I was told that she would die very soon as the wound was very severe. She was struggling with her breathing until Dot recommended reducing the dose of one of her drugs. Within minutes her breathing stabilised dramatically. The local GP attended during our visit and Dot advised him about the prescriptions required. I spoke briefly to the patient; she had received help from our Hospice at Home team and

was immensely grateful for the service. She said she hadn’t heard of St Barnabas until recently and she thought we were amazing. She clearly loved Dot.

“We spoke a little more and I showed her a photo of my wife and kids – she liked seeing my daughter. She was very switched on and very engaging, and said she was looking forward to receiving a new chair that she had ordered.

“The lady couldn’t use her left hand properly and couldn’t manage the syringe for her medication, so Dot worked out an easier way for her to take the medicine from a medicine cup. Once again, it was lovely seeing Dot’s interaction with her patient.

“The final visit was to a couple where the lady had cancer. She was undergoing chemotherapy and was due her last session in a few weeks. She was in constant pain. Dot went through her medication and suggested she try a different painkiller, as her pain was a stabbing pain as opposed to a dull ache. The patient’s husband was quite distressed about all the tablets – Dot reassured him and told him he was doing a great job.

“The following day, Dot told me that the second patient we had visited, the lady with breast cancer, had passed away in A&E. On the day of our visit she had been seen by a care assistant in the morning, a district nurse to change her dressing, her GP, and Dot and myself. She was seriously ill but happy and still getting on with her life in the best way possible. She was cared for and she clearly appreciated this and was pleased to see us. When Dot told me, I could tell that she was upset. Despite all the people she must see pass on, she still gets emotional. I was sad and I had only met the lady for just over half an hour.

“Overall, I really enjoyed my day and it made me value the work that we do even more. I am proud to work at St Barnabas.”

We have recently started a new art group called Creative Space at St Barnabas for family and close friends of patients known to the hospice. The group provides a supportive and

safe space in which people can take time for themselves and express themselves creatively.

The group takes place in the St Barnabas art room on Monday mornings and is open to anyone over the age of 19, including primary carers, occasional carers or someone who is otherwise part of the family or closely linked to one of our patients. There are two groups, and each group meets every other week for six weeks. For each cycle of six sessions a theme is set and those taking part can choose to tackle the theme in any media they wish. The sessions are not formally tutored, but tuition and support is available to those requiring it, relevant to their chosen media.

The creative activities provide a focus that group members can take in any direction they wish. They might use the time to explore the situation they are in, or to escape from it. The group offers a space in which people can be

We are delighted to have been awarded Approved Provider Standard (APS) in mentoring and

befriending for our very successful Community Companions befriending scheme.

The APS scheme is the national quality standard specifically for mentoring and befriending projects. It comprises 10 requirements across four key areas, supporting safe and effective practice in mentoring and befriending.

Community Companions has been running for over four years and has so far provided over 8,700 hours of support to patients and carers. The

APS report described the scheme as being “well organised with a sensitive approach” and, “good quality, safe and effective befriending support”.

Gillian Brennan, Human Resources Director of St Barnabas, says, “We are thrilled that our Community Companions scheme has achieved such a prestigious standard. We are delighted by the report’s very positive comments on the strengths of the project.”

Community Companions are volunteers who provide social and practical support to the hospice’s patients and their carers. The Companions may visit a patient at

mindful of their own wellbeing and, by extension, perhaps the wellbeing of those they care about.

We hope that the creative activity can empower participants through being positively engaged, being productive, thinking creatively about problems, being mindful of their own thoughts and feelings, and learning how to use the processes and techniques outside the group and apply them creatively at home.

Some Companions take patients out for visits to the shops or garden centres. The visits are usually for a couple of hours on a weekly basis. The scheme is co-ordinated by the Voluntary Services Team at St Barnabas and works alongside the staff providing clinical care.

Christmas at St BarnabasWe always try to make Christmas a special time at

St Barnabas and Christmas 2016 saw plenty of seasonal celebrations and festive fundraising.

Wear It FestiveThank you to everyone who took part in our Wear It Festive campaign in December by wearing all sorts of Christmassy costumes – including Santa suits, Christmas jumpers and reindeer antlers – and organising lots of festive fundraising activities. You have raised over £10,000 so far and donations are still coming in.

St Barnabas Christmas appealThank you to everyone who supported our Christmas appeal, which focused on helping to make Christmas as special as possible for the patients staying

at St Barnabas and their families. Over 200 of you kindly responded, donating more than £13,500 to date and sending in your paper chain

messages, which were on display at the hospice for patients, families, staff and volunteers to read and enjoy over Christmas.

We would like to thank all of you who took part in our 2016 Light Up a Life appeal, which

raised over £35,000 for St Barnabas. Light Up a Life is a celebration at Christmas time of everything that the hospice represents – living life to the full and making the most of every precious moment. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the lives of our loved ones.

Over 1,300 people came together at two services at Worthing’s Assembly Hall and enjoyed music from the Worthing Salvation Army Band and the very talented soloist, Sophie Shepherd. Everyone who made a dedication received a special votive candle to celebrate the memory of their loved ones. They also had the opportunity to light a virtual candle and post a ‘thought’ or memory of their loved one online.

Our annual Sunflower Memories Appeal is an opportunity for supporters and friends to remember

a loved one or friend and help St Barnabas at the same time. During June we will display attractively designed sunflowers at the hospice, each bearing the name of a loved one for whom a donation has been made to the hospice.

The sunflowers will be displayed until the end of June, when they will be available for supporters to keep as a permanent memento if they wish. During June our Chaplain, Stephen Gurr, will conduct two blessings in memory of all those to whom a sunflower has been dedicated.

We will be contacting previous participants by post to tell them about this year’s appeal, or you can find out more from the leaflet enclosed with this newsletter or by calling the Fundraising Team on 01903 706329.

Our Circle of Friends are people from Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield who want to make sure that

we are able to care for every person and family who needs our help. Their regular monthly gifts, paid automatically via their bank, allow us to plan ahead and budget effectively, so that we can employ the nursing staff required to provide all the care our patients need.

And it’s not just the patients who benefit – our Friends do too. By giving smaller, regular gifts, they are able to afford to make a more substantial contribution to our hospice care over the course of a year. It’s an easy and more affordable way to give and a better way to make a bigger difference to the lives of local people.

If you join our Circle of Friends we will thank and recognise your support with regular updates on our work. You’ll

also receive a yearly invitation to come into the hospice to meet our team and see the benefits that your support has helped us to provide.

How much you give is up to you – here are some examples of how your regular gift could help: • £3 per month could pay for a family

member to meet with one of our experienced counsellors to talk about their feelings.

• £5 per month will help to pay for a crucial home visit to a local patient, where we can help to establish a care plan that will maximise their time at home, while minimising their pain or discomfort.

• £10 per month would help to pay for a patient’s visit to the Day Hospice to receive treatment, talk to other patients who understand what they are going through, or just enjoy some social activities.

Join our Circle of Friends• £15 per month will help pay for a

patient’s stay at St Barnabas House, allowing them and their family to receive the very best care and support from our team.

If you have any questions or would like to join our Circle of Friends, please contact James Millen, Fundraising Development Officer, on 01903 706329 or [email protected]

We would like to thank all our supporters who came along to our tours over the summer last year – over 200 of you! We had lots of very positive feedback and, as a result, will be organising

a regular tour day every month. If you would like to find out more about a tour of the hospice, please email us at tours@stbh.

org.uk and we will get in touch with more details.

Tours of the hospice

“I was sitting in the old St Barnabas hospice with a friend who was being cared for there. I really admired what they were doing. Just seeing the wonderful work that they did, I wanted to give something back. Supporting St Barnabas House means helping other people that aren’t as fortunate as you are. You never know when you might need that support back one day.”

Peggy is one of our Friends and kindly shared with us why she gives a regular gift to St Barnabas.

Hospice staff he lp get things sorted!

In November, our Retail Distribution Centre was facing a mountain of donations that needed to be sorted in time for Christmas. Step forward our hospice colleagues, who came to the warehouse to help. Various staff teams spent a morning or an afternoon at the

warehouse, sorting and finding out more about charity retailing and its challenges.

They were able to see how all the donations we receive are used in various ways to maximise their fundraising potential. Donations that aren’t suitable for sale in the shops are still of great value as they can be sold on for recycling. We also have connections with a wide range of local companies including merchants who buy our scrap metal and antiques specialists who help us achieve the best prices for valuable jewellery or coins. Everything is an important source of revenue.

The staff cleared a huge pile of donations, and we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped out. If you would like to volunteer at our Retail Distribution Centre, we would love to hear from you. Please contact us on 01903 275660.

We always need donations of good-quality items to sell in our shops. For a list of our shops and

their contact details, please visit www.stbh.org.uk/shops. We are particularly keen to receive donations of furniture, and you may have seen

one of our banners up at the David Lloyd Leisure Centre in Worthing. Many thanks to the centre for generously displaying this for us. Please note we can arrange collection of large items of furniture. For details, please contact our Retail Distribution

Centre on 01903 275660 (option 2).

A big thank you to Henfield shop volunteer, Sue Swan, for putting St Barnabas House forward for a £500 community donation from consumer goods company Amway (Europe) Limited.

A lways keen to ensure we are providing our customers with the best possible experience, we ‘mystery

shopped’ our 11 St Barnabas shops last November and we are delighted to report back very positive results!

Each shop was visited with no prior warning. The survey covered all aspects of the shops, including customer service, layout and cleanliness, window displays and availability of Gift Aid information. Overall, our shops scored 84% in the survey and we were very pleased with the excellent and positive results.

Stephanie Smith, Director of Income Generation, says, “I am really delighted with the results of the mystery shopping exercise. We got a very high score overall, which is just fantastic and was a well-deserved Christmas present to the shops. Of course, there is always scope for improvement and never for complacency but we really do have such superwomen and supermen in the shop teams – staff and volunteers – and also in the warehouse. As well as the money raised, the shops and all the staff and volunteers are a credit and an asset to St Barnabas House and our sister hospice, Chestnut Tree House. A huge thank you to everyone in the shops and warehouse.”

Max Caunhye, the hospice’s Finance Director, says, “The result is very positive news, especially regarding Gift Aid. We have a 70% positive response rate for offering Gift Aid, compared to an average of 34% among the other charity organisations that the mystery shoppers have visited, which is brilliant.”

We’d like to say a very big thank you to all our retail staff and volunteers for their hard work in running the shops and for giving customers a very positive experience.

25 years young!K eeping ou r cu stomers satisf ied! Customers, staff and volunteers

at our Rustington St Barnabas House charity shop were joined by The Chairman of

Arun District Council, Cllr Stephen Haymes and The Mayor of Worthing, Cllr Sean McDonald, on 15 February to celebrate the store’s 25th birthday.

Shop manager, Sue Miles, and her team decorated the shop in style and guests enjoyed a beautiful handmade, St Barnabas themed birthday cake.

Head of Retail, Jan Harper said: “Last year alone, the Rustington shop team processed and sold over 28,000 items that were generously donated by local residents, and the funds raised by the shop go towards providing hospice care and home support for local people.”

“The Rustington shop was our third shop to open and St Barnabas now has 11 shops in West Sussex. We’d like to thank all of our customers and

donors over the last 25 years for their generous support for the shop.”

The shop sells clothing, shoes and accessories, fabulous bric-a-brac and small electrical items, and is always looking for donations to help raise funds for the hospice.

Set just away from the hustle and bustle of the main shopping area at 56 The Street, Rustington, it’s worth the short walk to go and look at the delightful and artistic interior and attractive window displays. Charity shopping at its best!

The biennial Serendipity Ball is back again this year! The ball is the brainchild of five friends, Jo, Miranda, Ryan, Mike and Tina, who met at a local choir and wanted to raise funds for St Barnabas House. They

hit a fundraising milestone in 2015 with their third ball and have raised almost £15,000 since they started in 2011.

This year’s event, which has a ‘black and gold’ theme, will be a fun-packed evening including a charity raffle, dinner and dance and, as the evening finale, an auction of prizes donated by local businesses and individuals. Tina Olliver, one of the event organisers, says, “We have a lot of fun organising this event and the ball is a great excuse to dress up.”

Tickets are £55 each and include a welcome drink, a three-course meal and half a bottle of wine. To book please contact Tina on 07817 550164 or email [email protected]

As well as good listening skills, the role requires compassion, self-awareness and the ability to reflect. All volunteers are given full and ongoing training, including a Loss and Bereavement course that takes place one morning a week for 10 weeks, and are supported through monthly supervision meetings.

If you think you have what it takes to be a Family Services Visitor you can find out more about the role by contacting the Voluntary Services Team on 01903 706315 or emailing [email protected]. The deadline for applications is Wednesday 11 March 2015.

Are you a good listener?

“Y ou have to be dedicated. Y ou have to be a good listener and you have to care. But the rewards are amazing. I really feel that I am helping and giving something back.”

Avril

We are looking for good listeners to work as volunteer Family Services Visitors for the hospice.

Family Services Visitors work within the Family Services Team, which provides counselling, social work, chaplaincy and bereavement support to patients and their families and carers. They help out at bereavement events and meet individually with patients, family members and those who have been bereaved.

Avril, who has been a Family Services Visitor at the hospice for the past 10 years, has spoken out about the hugely rewarding role. “I work with people who have recently been bereaved, offering them support and counselling. The service is incredibly important to those who use it and I am honoured to be a part of the team, and a part of St Barnabas House,” says Avril.

“Friends and family often ask how I can take on such a depressing role, but I see it as the complete opposite” she continues. “Of course I am working with some very sad people and I can’t help but feel for them, but it is so rewarding to see the change in them at the end of our time together. Knowing that they are well on their way to starting a new life, and that you have helped them get there, is a wonderful feeling.”

Before starting in the role Avril had three months training to prepare her. “It was wonderful,” she says, “I did feel apprehensive to start with but the trainer was really helpful. It’s amazing how quickly you get into it – I enjoy talking to people and helping them so it was really easy for me to settle in.”
