Friday, 9th March 2018 Dear Parents

Extra-Curricular Clubs and Activities at The British School of Amsterdam PRIMARY Departments

SUMMER TERM 2018 We are now preparing information for the Extra Curricular Activities that are on offer at the British School of Amsterdam for the Summer Term. The information and application process will all be done online, via our parent portal on Firefly, and also via our school website. The Clubs booklet will be uploaded on Tuesday 13th March at 4pm, and booking will begin on Wednesday 14th March at 5pm (see below for more details) In order to sign up for the after school clubs, all parents will need to use the following process. To look at the information about clubs on offer:

On Tuesday 13th March, the booklets detailing the club offer for the Summer term will be uploaded to Firefly at 4pm. To access the booklet online, please go to https://britams.fireflycloud.net/whole-school/clubs-and-activities. Please remember you will need your login information for firefly - if you need help, please contact Manon van der Veen ([email protected] )For new parents to the school or if your prefer you can still sign up via the website.

There is one booklet, detailing all of the clubs on offer across the primary school (Early Years, Infant, Junior) At the front of the booklet there is an overview so you can see at a glance which clubs are open to different year groups (Please note clubs are not available for Nursery children).

Please read the information about the different clubs on offer carefully. Each outside provider has given details of the kind of activities involved in their club, the dates for the term, cost, the number of children allowed in the club and a contact for future reference. There is a calendar in the booklet which indicates which days the clubs will run. Clubs start in the second week of term and finish in the penultimate week of term, and clubs do not operate on the days of Parents Evenings. In the summer term, there are no clubs run by members of the school staff in the Primary departments.

On Wednesday 14th March at 5 pm the online booking system will open:

Once you have decided on which clubs you would like to select for your child/ren, please follow the links at the bottom of the Clubs page to access the online Extra Curricular request Form.

To fill out the form, you will need to enter the full name (First and family name) of your child, select their class from the drop down box, enter a contact email that the club provider will be given, and then select which clubs you would like to sign up for.

The clubs are arranged by day. You do not have to choose a club for each day, and we would recommend a limit to clubs dependent on the age of your child:

Reception– 1 club per week Year 1 & 2– no more than 2 clubs per week Year 3, 4, 5 & 6 – no more than 3 clubs per week

Some clubs are very popular, and in the event of a club reaching its maximum capacity, all children entered afterwards will form the waiting list. If you have not got into a club, you can then arrange for a different club after the initial process has finished, or go on the waiting list in case others drop out.

Once you have finished the selection, please press submit, and then you have completed the process. Please note, if you subsequently decide you would like to change your choices, you must re-submit the entire form before the deadline, but you may then appear further down the waiting list and so may not get in to an oversubscribed club.

Each entry is then filed on our data base, with a time marked entry, so that we will be able to see which children have applied for a club in which order, and can then create club lists fairly.

The deadline for booking clubs and filling in online forms will be MONDAY 19th March at midday. We will then inform parents and children of their club requests by letter before Friday 23rd March. If you have not got into the club of first choice, you will then be able to arrange with Mrs Lankenau to find out which clubs have spaces. Outside club providers levy a charge (detailed in the booklet) - parents are expected to meet the providers after the first session and arrange payment. Please ensure that this is done promptly so that the clubs can run for all. Clubs will start on Monday 16th April, and will run until Friday 6th July. Please note that we are only able to receive bookings for clubs via the website.

Many thanks and best wishes

Eva Lankenau Clubs Coordinator

WEDNESDAY CLUBS

Name of Club: Yoga Provider: Priya Machado

Day of Club: Wednesday INF Y1&2

Email details: [email protected]

Cost of club per term: €12 per session (total cost depending on number of sessions run)

Minimum number of children: 10

Maximum number of children 15 Mountains tumbling into headstands, suddenly converting into speeding cycles. Bridges collapsing

into roaring lions, a cocooned caterpillar turning into beautiful butterflies. These amazing pictures are

nothing but scenes from any normal household. Watch a child and you will know. The natural postures

of a child are yoga asanas, which is the Indian word for ‘postures’. This is what the body is born with

– simple yoga asanas that are part of a child’s body language from the minute he/she is born.

Priya Machado has been teaching yoga since 1988. She studied in various yoga schools in India and

did an International teacher training programme at the Sivananda School of Yoga in Kerala, South

India. She continues to teach yoga to adults and children in Amsterdam.

Priya believes yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical

activity that is non-competitive. Her approach is creative with the use of animated postures and basic

stretching exercises to promote strength, flexibility, coordination and body awareness. Breathing and

visualisation techniques teach kids how to focus, relax and develop self-control. Yoga helps balance

children’s energy and concentration levels.

Yoga postures and the routine can also be developed into games, which make the session more

creative and interesting for children to engage with and gives them the experience of working together

either in pairs or as a group. Priya’s yoga is a fun and the term ends with a performance for the

parents, which the children enjoy preparing for, towards the end of the last few sessions.

It is preferred that parents who register for the yoga club, commit to sending their child from the start,

as the club is run based on the number of registrations in order to make it worth while for the club

provider.

The scheduled number of sessions are 11 - Priya may only be able to do 7 sessions, (this will be

confirmed at the start of the Yoga club); and the rest can be run by Ellen De Marco (a Mum at BSA

and who offered to stand in for Priya last term while she was in India.

Ellen has her 200 RYT training and has been studying yoga for personal benefit, as well as prenatal

and child interests in her CEU's.

Her approach is playful realism, with Sun Salutations and positive mental building.

If you have any questions about the yoga session please send an email to

[email protected] or call 0627221004.

Over the last decade, media apps and filmmaking tools have become a fundamental part of our digital lives. Children are often using screens to learn, play, and socialise. Media literacy is now a basic literacy. In response to these developments, Film Crew Club workshops focus on playful co-creation formats: students work with cameras and iPads to explore animation and live action filmmaking. By making films together, students learn, first hand, how to look at media critically and how to engage with it safely and respectfully. Year 4 -6 students also learn to verify images, assess content for risk, understand how editing tools manipulate imagery and begin to differentiate between authentic and sponsored content. Film Crew Club workshops are also offered as independent workshops throughout the year for kids, teens and adults at other locations. We do painting, drawing, claywork, paper/cardwork – lots of imaginative work. You can see examples on my website, www.tonychapman-artmusic.com

There is a relaxed atmosphere – making art is fun. I encourage self expression and freedom in art making – I give a project as a starting point – the most important thing for me is the student’s own interpretation... I‘m always amazed and delighted to see what students come up with...

I’ve been running these groups for the last 19 years – at the British School of Amsterdam, ISA and AICS. I have a B.A. Hons Degree in Creative Arts. I am a painter and sculptor.

I also teach guitar (privately and at the British School of Amsterdam) and I teach piano (privately).

I am English – and have lived in Amsterdam for the last 20 years. I am also a singer/songwriter

with my own band, “The Big Event”, performing in and around Amsterdam.

Christine Maas, a professional artist experienced in art education, will teach the club. The

program is developed and coordinated by Laurence Aëgerter, art historian and professional

artist (www.laurenceaegerter.com) with an extensive experience in art education (Rijksmuseum,

Van Gogh Museum, Hermitage and Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam).

At the Painting Club you will develop artistic skills to create 2-D works by using various techniques

and materials, such as ink, pastels, watercolors, gouache and acrylic paint on canvas. You will

expand your imagination and gain self-confidence in making art. But most of all, let’s have lots

of fun!

The hidden treasure of Ramses the Great

This term the Painting Club will travel to Egypt to tell the story of the hidden treasure of Ramses

the Great. Become one of the pharaoh’s court artists and reveal the story of the hidden treasure

of Ramses the Great. Design, draw and paint the puzzle pieces that will help archaeologists

towards the clue of his hidden treasure.

As Little Painters, you will create different parchment rolls:

- self-design hieroglyphs, drawn in ink, to tell the story of Ramses the Great

- ask the God of the Sun Ra and the God of the pharaoh Horus to protect the treasure from

thieves

- paint a portrait of Ramses the Great, with gold and silver paint.

- reveal the place of the treasure in the painting of the treasure map

- decorate your treasure chest with metallic foil inlays and fill it with the parchment rolls

Minimum number of children: 2

Maximum number of children: 16

famous chess club VAS (Vereenigd Amsterdamsch Schaakgenootschap: "United Amsterdam

are divided into two parts. The first 20 minutes will be spent working on theory with a

Wijgerden, which is a visual step-by-step method to learn and enjoy chess on every

individual level. In the next 40 minutes the pupils will play chess in competition, alternating

with all kinds of chess varieties (simultaneous, crazy house, random chess etc.).

Chess is one of the oldest problem solving games in the world and certainly the most

popular one. It stimulates the imagination and makes children responsible for their own

moves.
