ESA BIC BAVARIA TO CREATE 70 NEW VENTURES AT 3 LOCATIONS UNTIL 2014
ESA, Free State of Bavaria, and AZO signed a contract for the ESA BIC expansion to Nuremberg and Berchtesgaden in May 2011.
The two new Bavarian ESA BIC facilities, which are managed by AZO, will be realized together with Fraunhofer Gesellschaft and Wirtschaftsförderungs-gesellschaft Berchtesgadener Land. The budget of about 3,6 Mio. EUR will support additional 30 new ventures.

MODEL-BASED ENGINEERING FOCUSED
ON ELECTRIC AND HYBRID CARS
Modelon provides Dymola and
Modelica based engineering services
and products related to advanced
model-based engineering of complex
technical systems.
By simulating the complex functional
relationships of electric and hybrid cars
Modelon’s solutions contribute to the
development of future vehicles’ energy
management, functional development and
operational strategy and will help to
reduce emissions and energy
consumption.

USING SATELLITE DATA TO PROTECT
AGAINST FUTURE FOOD CRISIS
Satellites from the EU’s GMES program
deliver images, which can be used to
estimate the size, shape and location
of agricultural production areas. They
also assist in determining yields based
on the observed health of plants.
Agrista’s collaboration platform brings
together farmers & agricultural enterprises
with international financiers. The aim is to
reduce their risk to make more capital
available to farmers. In co-operation with
T-Systems the solution can be used
anywhere in the world from the cloud and
should help to boost global food
production, which needs to increase by 70
percent by 2050 (UN).

LASER COMMUNICATIONS
FROM AERIAL PLATFORMS
Laser communications for remote
sensing and security applications
provide the solution for data-
transmission bottlenecks on UAVs,
aircrafts, and high-altitude platforms.
The DLR spin-off company ViaLight
Communications (VLC) facilitates the
direct transmission of high-resolution
image data from multi-spectral sensors to
the ground at rates where conventional
microwave links reach their physical
limits.

GNSS RECEIVER SYSTEM WITH CENTIMETRE-
LEVEL ACCURACY FOR SAFETY-OF-LIFE APPS
AMCONAV GmbH develops receiver
systems using signals from the GPS
and Galileo satellite navigation
systems to achieve centimetre-level
accuracy.
AMCONAV´s new receiver system
achieves centimetre-level accuracy by
resolving the carrier-phase ambiguities
with an error rate of less than 1e-9 in real
time. The new receiver is interesting for
safety-of-life applications, e.g. safe
marine navigation in narrow waterways
and watergates, assistance systems for
helicopters and cranes to stabilise freight.

PIPELINE MONITORING& LEAKAGE DETECTION IN
REAL-TIME WITH FIBER OPTICAL DATA LINES PiMon GmbH aims to be come a global
provider of complex sensor technology
solutions for monitoring of water-, oil-, and
gas pipelines.
PiMon supervises fiber optical data lines. It
offers real-time detection of every event on the
fiber as well as precise fault location to monitor
pipelines of various distances up to 100 km.
The market for pipeline security is huge, with
139.000 km of new oil & gas pipelines
worldwide until 2013. Up to 50 % of the input
water in the Arab MENA countries is being lost
through evaporation and leakage from the
supply networks – a high potential for the
PiMon leakage detection technology.
