ESN – enterprise social network

This presentation has been produced to help you optimise your effectiveness on your companies enterprise social network. This guide is primarily aimed at Yammer users.

What is an enterprise social network?

Enterprise Social Networks are communication platforms used by businesses to encourage collaboration with internal communication messages, news, projects or campaigns.

When used correctly, they offer leadership teams instant access to their frontline employees. Offering leaders the opportunity to share their thoughts on important business strategic goals, live projects, company culture and values. Giving them the opportunity to enter in to a two way dialogue with their employees.

Think of them as being a bit like Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram & Twitter all rolled into one. Where the only difference is that the platform is closed to employees working for the same company.

Enhance your profilePeople like to associate a face to a profile. Upload a professional profile picture.

People read your profile to find out what you have to offer. Take a bit of time adding your professional story to your profile page.

On any social network, you are your tags. Add profile tags that define your professional interests and skills. This helps fellow employees and content find you.

Content remains king … even on Social NetworksHowever, don’t stress about content.

You don’t need to come up with all the content yourself. Spark off conversations around existing internal communication content. Some of the best discussions you will have will be around content produced by others.

Share the load with others. Within your Yammer groups encourage other group members to take the lead from time to time. Don’t forget to like their posts and praise them for their contributions.

Keep your finger on the pulseKeep a clean house. Stay on top of your News/Activity Feed. You could look to block book two 10-minute slots every day in Outlook for you to perform some focused Yammer grooming.

Don’t wait to contribute. Yammer thread posts can be a little erratic. You may miss your opportunity to guide the conversation if you delay posting your point of view.

Mention like crazyUsing @mentions, alerts people / places that you're talking about them.

Mention People. Yammer notifies people mentioned after the @ that you are talking about them. When someone is @mentioned in a post, a status update, or elsewhere, a notification of the activity flows into that persons personal News Feed.

Mention groups. This also applies to interesting Yammer groups you have discovered. Members of that group should see an @mention in their news feed.

Mention Content. Consider adding @links to interesting content as well.

Tag as if your life depends on itTags are the life blood of any Social Network.

If you don't use them, you're just using a non instant messaging system.

Just like you use the @mention to tag people and places, you use the #hashtag to tag keywords.

Tag Keywords using #hashtags. If you want people to discover your content, you must tag your content so that it pops up in their News Feed or Search Results.

Share, share and then share againShare content. If you want to really grab someone's attention, on Yammer use share function within O365, which sends an email with a link back. Replace the default text and add your own personalised call-to-action.

Share with Subject Matter Experts. Here's an idea. If you post a new bit of content, just do a quick search for relevant tags and share your post with the authors of the first 3 results you find.

Spread the loveLike & Bookmark. Doesn’t it feel great when someone likes your post? It feels just as good for others too. It takes less than a second to like something, it helps create a lasting self-supporting positive impression.

Follow sites & people. Spend time managing your News Feed. Making sure that you subscribe to groups that will help you personally.

Praise those that have helped you. Yammer is a great place to praise an individual. Remember to tag an employees line managers if you do!

Develop your voiceYammer is not a place for those long words and strict grammar rules. A more casual writing tone will engage an audience best.

Practice will make perfect. Over time your Yammer voice will become more natural.

Please remember, whatever you say on Yammer must comply with any guidelines or policies that your company may have put in place.

Market persistentlyRuthlessly build your fan base

Followership is key to building a brand on Yammer because when someone follows you, your space, your tags, you pop up in their News Feed. You've grabbed a little bit of organisational attention in that moment.

If you are invisible on Yammer, so are your yammer contributions.

Link back aggressively to your Yammer profile in:

Email signatures

Your intranet profile

Your O365 Delve profile

Your meeting minutes

Your PowerPoint presentations

Assorted power user tipsYammer Rockstar’s know what time of the day their community will be most active, and post to maximise their number of hits.

Yammer Rockstar’s know when you write you should follow the Think-Feel-Do principle. What you wish to say? What should the user think? How should they feel? What would you like them to do?

Yammer Rockstar’s ask open-ended questions that invite the reader to discover their own 'ah-ha' moments? Use words and sentence structures to encourage others to feel more at ease, engaged and to encourage them to contribute.
