I was raised in the 50’s and 60’s. The only dance I could do was the twist. (Think Chubby Checker) If you are smiling and laughing at the image of your pastor doing the twist, I forgive you.

I worshiped in a Baptist/Pentecostal church while on a mission trip to Mexico. During one song they all formed a huge circle and danced as a big group. They moved left then right. Half turns-full turns. Men lift your arms-women lift your arms. I was waiting for “you do the hokey-pokey…” Then it ended with everyone singing a scripture verse and applause.

How did I feel during all that? Very uncomfortable. Then I realized, this was not about me and my preferences. This was how they worshiped and it meant a lot to them.

As pastor, I want things to remain the way I like them. Changes in programs and schedules don’t come easy. Our study of I Am A Church Member has taught me: Church is not about me. Church is about God’s mission to reach the lost.

When my grandchildren come to my house, we don’t watch Fox News or work on my taxes together. We play hide and seek, and Thomas Trains. We watch Madagascar and sometimes do the twist. Why? Because I want them to come back again. To reach us Jesus became one of us.

In the church I’ve always been taught that if I keep the barn attractive, clean and organized the way I like it, the grains of wheat would somehow find their way into the barn. Some did. However most of the people who could be reached that way, have already been reached. “Come and see” evangelism must now become “go and be” evangelism.

Eastmont is moving from solely attractional methods to incarnational methods of missions. The greatness of a church is not measured by its seating capacity but by its sending capacity.
