ONLY 30 MINUTES A MONTH?!

If we were having a “heart to heart”, the serious question would be: “Really? Don’t you really have 30 minutes—

only 30 minutes—a month to share at our nursing home

Sunday morning worship service?”

The need is great for your involvement on Sunday morn-ing between 10:45 am and 11:15 am for the worship time at the Manor and/or the Harbour (both on our church cam-pus). We’re seeking teams of 2 or 3 people (friends) to occa-sionally help with these acts of compassion (once a month or every other month). You only need the gift of caring and you can select the area you’d be comfortable in serv-ing, such as:

Read a few verses of Scripture to those attending Lead the attendees in singing a few familiar hymns Pass out music sheets or make sure the podium is at the front Serve as a greeter/host/hostess Share your testimony of faith or a short devotional Provide smiling words and warm-hearted greetings Push a wheel chair…or share a hug…or lend an arm

You (and your friends) would be soaked with a shower of blessings! And Jesus would say, “Well done. Well done. You did this for Me!”

Talk today to a friend about joining with you.. God blesses those who joyfully serve. Call

right away to volunteer to help

PASTOR PROFILE

Born and bred in North Carolina…how sweet! Pastor Andy Roy grew up in Troy and then in Gibsonville. His father, a Wesleyan pastor, led Andy to Christ at age 8. However, it

was at age 20, when a medical crisis his Dad experienced, that the Gospel became real to Andy. And what appeared to be a life and death situation turned out to be a “non-event” and Andy’s father was cleared by the medical team. That “non-event”, however, impacted Andy’s spirit in an extraor-dinary way and he has never been the same since. Many of us have had little opportunity to interact with Pastor Andy and missed the blessing of getting to know this godly young man who is also great fun as well as extremely talented. Pastor Andy joined First Wesleyan in August, 2011, to lead worship for the Towne Center service and to develop a junior high ministry. Now with two services, he is our dynamic worship leader for both. Pastor Andy began leading worship at Kernersville Wesleyan in 2004, but jumped on board with a church plant in Asheboro in 2005 remaining with them until 2011. Cur-rently they average over 500 on Sunday.

Andy’s resume includes everything from pulling tobacco, working at Chic-Fil-A, construction labor, working in a library, to splicing rope! He identifies with Johnny Cash—“he’s been every-where, man!” His first passion, since God called him at age 16, has been writing, recording, and producing mu-sic. He confesses his creative switch never turns off. He has recorded three albums, the most recent called “The Demo Sessions” released this March.

PASTOR ANDY ROY

For a great love story, Andy and his wife Crystal have a wonderful one! He was hand-picked for Crystal by his mother-in-law and along with her friend, they set up a blind date for the two of them! How cool! They are now the proud parents of Levi, age 2, and with Ava, their American bulldog, they are busy! For recreation, Pastor Andy and Crystal enjoy biking and hiking. He “enjoys” the gym, especially when he pushes through the desire to quit. Can we identify? He also enjoys cooking, particularly burgers and grilled pizza. Yes, that is not a misprint; he does grill pizza and he makes it sound easy—including making his own dough! (Recipe coming…) By the way, he confesses to being a picky eater but has no problem with pizza – ever! Andy’s a huge fan of the Boston Red Sox, the Dallas Cowboys, and Carolina his favor-ite collegiate team. He likes some sitcoms and sci-fi, mentioning Continuum in the latter genre. Favorite books include: “Searching for God Knows What” by Donald Miller, “Deep

and Wide” by Andy Stanley, and “Humility” by Andrew Murray. Andy’s bucket list includes performing at the Blue Bird Café in Nashville, going to a World Series game, watching Carolina/Duke basketball at Cameron, releasing a full-length album on vinyl (according to Andy, vinyl is making a comeback!), and running a marathon as well as travel in the Pacific Northwest. On the QT, ask Andy about jumping out of a tree (at age 10) and being caught by his shorts—dangling, as if held by a giant claw, until his Dad rescued him! Can you just envi-sion it? Obviously, Pastor Andy is a many-faceted young man with God-given gifts and depth of character. We are so blessed that the Lord has allowed us to be the beneficiaries of his tal-ents and spirit! May God continue to bless you to our hearts, Andy!

WEST END MINISTRY WEST END MINISTRY WEST END MINISTRY WEST END MINISTRY LEADER HAS CANCER

West End Food Ministry has undergone some changes over the past few months. Manilla Dean, the dear lady who God put the burden on her heart for the less fortunate of the area has been suffering from cancer for the past several months. Different people have stepped in in her absence. Manilla had not been able to participate at the Thursday night meals, but now with your prayers and the help of god she comes once a month to help feed and minister to the dear people she loves. She stills needs our prayers as the disease is slowly taking its toll. She knows this is where God needs and wants her to be until he calls her home.

Please continue to give to West End Ministries! Remember, the food you donate is often the only meal many may have on any given day. The need for donations is greater than ever and First Wesleyan Church is one of, if not the largest, contributor of food for these grateful folks.

PEOPLE OF THE FAITH

JERRY AND RHONDA FARLOWJERRY AND RHONDA FARLOWJERRY AND RHONDA FARLOWJERRY AND RHONDA FARLOW

“Let the true church roll on!” This is Jerry Farlow’s

weekly admonition to the Outreach Sunday School Class—

frequently with this added admonition, ”Sic ‘em!” Jerry

and Ronda Farlow are two people who radiate the love of

God and the joy of serving Him!

Jerry, the second son of Jack and Dot Farlow (including Jeter, Joel, and

Janie), began attending church as an infant. You might conclude he became a fol-

lower of Jesus from early childhood. Not so, he shares, and relates he was a very

stubborn child who wanted to be in control.

Then on a Saturday night in 1963, while working as a teenager at a local super-

market, Jerry recalls, “Jesus came shopping at the Big Bear in the form of Pastor

Adrian Grout—not for groceries, but for a young man.” Later, at Pastor Grout’s

home, Jerry confessed, “Pastor, I need a heart conversion!” There they knelt and

Jerry received Christ into his life becoming a fully committed Christ-follower.

From childhood, Rhonda was greatly influenced by her precious, hard-working

grandmother. She shares, “I remember every day walking over the miles with my

grandmother to a relative’s house to clean up the “mess” from the night before.

Every day the same process, then walking home to clean, sweep, garden and wash our

clothes.”

Church camp at Lake Lure was a highlight for Ronda, remembering how close

Jesus felt to her even when alone. In those early

years, she and a friend began singing together in

area churches. Often the Lord blessed the congre-

gations with many at the altar and others testify-

ing to the work of God in their lives through their

songs. Recently, while attending a funeral, a family

member shared that it was Ronda’s singing, years

ago, that led him to the Lord.

Page 8: ENCORE Newsletter -August2013

Jerry has taught the Outreach Class for over 50 years, and many would say he

has a photographic memory (he’d disagree!), but whether it’s dates, names, or events

(even generations ago), along with spicy stories to illustrate the point, Jerry’s gift

and first love is sharing scriptures from God’s Word, helping listeners understand

how much Jesus loves them.

Jerry worked for 27 years in the grocery business and then another 27 years

in the building supply business. Many began their own personal walk with the Lord be-

cause of his joyful witness. Likewise, many will tell you it was their favorite teacher,

“Ms. Farlow” who changed their lives with her warm hugs and excellent teaching.

Ronda taught for 23 years becoming a Special Education master teacher.

Have you heard Jerry share when Ronda (Hundley) first caught his eye coming

down the stairs at school? Well, you’ll quickly realize that she’s the light of his life!

Together they have two great sons, Tim and Steve, two wonderful daughter-in-laws,

Jenn and Bonnie and four of the best grandchildren in the world! Together, they have

built a household of faith.

If you know Jerry and Ronda, you know that following Jesus and loving others is

a way of life for them. Whether serving on the local church board, singing in the

choir, helping someone in need, mowing a portion of the church grounds or ministering

at the nursing home, Jerry and Ronda “put their hands to the task…with all their

might” (a favorite verse).

Whether Jerry’s admonishing the class to “conversate” or Ronda’s preparing a

delicious meal to share, they live it out…joyfully serving Jesus with warm smiles and

glad hearts.

Compiled by friends who dearly love these two people.
