SENIOR HIGH YOUTH GROUP WORK CAMP

Hooray! Our church’s 14th work camp trip is almost here. On Sunday, July 6th we will travel from our church parking lot all the way to Guilderland, New York – a little past Albany, so about a 2 hour 30 minute drive. The location is a bit closer so we will not need to stop and spend the night along the way. This year we have a few new adult faces joining our trip; and we are including the incoming high school students as well (current 8th graders). So, more than half of our crew will be attending for the first time. Wednesday is a half-day of work; so the local organization has arranged a party at a park for the whole work camp. As we have done in the past, we will be joining about 500 other people to help transform some homes in the Guilderland area. More important is the impact the week has on the lives of residents whose homes we work on – and the bonus is the transformation the week can have on those of us who make the trip and do the work. For as much work is done, homes improved, sweat is poured; there is also an emotional and spiritual change that can take place for each of us. We will be returning to our church parking lot on Saturday, July 12th. Learn more about the sponsoring organization at http://groupmissiontrips.com/; they’ve been doing trips like this since 1977.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

PARISH LIFE

Thanks for all you who participated and then helped clean up at the 70's theme potluck supper. Prizes awarded to Sara Purcell, Rachel Purcell and Mallory for twister game and hula hoop contests. Best dressed couple Tom and Donna Morgan. Tie dye cake was voted by the judge to be the best 70's food. This is our last event until Fall. Please watch your email and Evangel for the Fall events. Your Parish Life Committee. Ps.: If you have any ideas for events for next year let us know.

COMMUNICATION

The photo directories are here and available from the office. Bonnie is keeping a list of those who have picked up theirs. Special thanks to Donna Morgan for superb graphics, and all the photographers. :Kelly FitzSilva for the cover, Tom and Donna Morgan, and Jack Barry. All of them gave Donna lots of quality candid shots to work with.

The office has software from LifeTouch, which Lisa is learning how to use. The software will enable the office to easily update either information or a photo on the web page. Stay tuned for more information. Recently a subcommittee devoted to reworking the web site had its first meeting. The objective is to make the web page more current, with new events being listed on a consistent basis on the home page. Also the committee expressed a desire to make the pages more vibrant and eye catching. Several options are being explored. We’re in the early stages of discussion and will keep you apprised of developments.

6

Finally, we’re trying to get all the various newspapers and listings on the internet to use Congregational Church of Westborough as our name and eliminate Evangelical Congregational Church of Westborough. When we list calendar items or have an ad for a special event, we are aiming for consistency with our name.

MUSIC COMMITTEE

CELLIST CONCERT

On May 4, our church hosted cellist Sergey Antonov and pianist Ilya Kazantsev. They performed a concert of Richard Strauss and Felix Mendelssohn. After the concert they signed CD’s they had recorded. The concert was the last of the three concerts sponsored by the music committee this year. In addition to the annual Black History Concert, the committee is looking into another concert next year. The choirs finish for the year this Sunday and will resume in September. We are looking for people willing to perform during summer services. Please contact me at [email protected] to let me know what instrument or voice you’ll perform with and what music you have in mind. After 6 years as music committee treasurer, we are saying thank you to Ina Donahue as she goes off the committee. She has done a terrific job of keeping the books and we are grateful for her talents. Dear Folks, Once again I wish to thank you for the beautiful tulip plant I received. Mary MacDonald

---------------------------------------------------------------- How do I thank so many for the outstanding Honor that was dedicated to me and my many years up in the Loft? I was overwhelmed by this outpouring of love. The special music, the bells, Myra’s reading and the cake and luncheon after topped off a memorable weekend. My thanks go to the Music Committee, the chair, the Bells, Curtis and to you my Church family. My voice through the years was my gift to God and to you my Church family. Thanks again & God Bless you all, Charlie Thank you all for your warm support during my training and running of this year’s Boston Marathon. It was a tough run as the weather was quiet warm, but with the help of the amazing crowd, I was able to finish in 4:25. Dear Westborough friends,

Thank you for ALL your support this past year in getting the new church start off the ground. I am excited, and

so thankful to you all for your encouragement and affirmation. What a blessing!

Many of you know that after the February vote of the Congregational Church of Westborough to support the

new church, I gave my six months notice to Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries (CMM), the interfaith

organization I work for. I will be completing my time with CMM this August, after my 11th

summer as the

director of the Interfaith Youth Initiative (IFYI) program (if you know high school or college youth who would

like to be part of a transformative eight-day immersion program in interfaith dialogue, service, peacemaking,

and the arts, email me or check out: http://www.coopmet.org/IFYI.html ). I am sad to be leaving CMM and

IFYI, but excited about the direction God is calling me and this new church start! Once I leave CMM, I will be

able to devote greater amounts of time to the new church. Next year I will continue to be bivocational,

beginning my third year as Protestant Chaplain at Brandeis University in Waltham.

Since the February vote to support this new church start, you have not seen me as much in worship! While I

will join you for worship every couple months (and will be joining Westborough church as a member on June

1), I have been using Sundays for two purposes: 1) to visit other new church starts and learn best practices, and

2) to begin spreading the word and gathering support from other UCC congregations for the new church start.

On March 30th

, I preached and shared about the new church start in Hopedale, and in July, I will preach at

Upton. I have met and talked with pastors and members of other churches about ways that they can support the

new church start, and have more plans to preach and share in the fall. There is a lot of excitement about this

new church start. As one fellow pastor told me: “this new church is exactly what the Church- with a Capital C-

needs!”

This summer I will be continuing to meet up with pastors of different new church starts to increase my

knowledge of best practices. In March, I completed, Church Planting 2.0, an online course with the Center for

Progressive Renewal (I completed Church Planting 1.0 in the fall of 2013). I am learning as much as I can now,

before the church start gets off the ground running in September!

Next fall, I will gather together a group called the “Wisdom and Visioning” team. This team will meet

regularly to lend their vision and wisdom in thinking about next steps for launching this church. Paul Sangree

and Serena Leiser from Westborough will be on that Wisdom and Visioning team. Over the summer, I will

continue to do outreach in the Waltham area to spread the word about the new church start, and hopefully get

more locals who are interested in the vision of this new church. In the beginning stages of this new church start,

outreach will be key! As many of you know from the outline of the new church start I shared in February, the

first year of starting a church consists largely of building the community, before launching into regular worship!

I am so thankful for the support of the Congregational Church of Westborough. Starting a new church is a

monumental task, and I know that I cannot do it alone. I am so grateful that the Congregational Church of

Westborough has voted to be the “parent” church of this new church start, and to help seed it into being. In that

spirit, if you feel called to partner more deeply in getting this new church start up and running, I would welcome

you to be part of a “New Church Start Support Team.” There are many ways you can help, from outreach, to

research, to marketing, graphic design, administrative tasks, and more! I would ask you to think about your

particular gifts and skills- what you are good at, and/or what makes your heart sing- and consider whether you

might use those skills in the service of this new church start. Please email me at [email protected] if you

are interested, and we can begin the conversation about different ways you can help!

Peace to you all, and many, many thanks,

Matt

The Congregational Church of Westborough - 57 West Main Street Westborough, MA 01581

May 2, 2014

Dear Members and Friends,

One of our many strengths as a Church has been the complete worship experience one feels while sitting in our Sanctuary. Over the course of the last 20 years we have worked hard to take good care of this space so that it might be an appropriate setting for, and complement to, our strong spiritual, music and worship programs. One of the last remaining projects in this area is the repair and refurbishing of a few of the stenciled windows in the Sanctuary.

The Trustees, with the support of the Cabinet, have decided to move forward with the task of replacing the broken and missing stenciled windows. These beautiful windows have enhanced our place of worship for over 100 years and now need our attention. There are 11 large panes and 5 colored border panes that need to be replaced.

After a lengthy review process, we have selected Willet Hauser Architectural Glass to complete the work. Willet Hauser has a hundred year history of designing, restoring and repairing stained glasswork and has worked on some of the best known sacred spaces in the country. They have studied the affected panes and responded with a detailed and thoughtful proposal.

We will need to raise $16,500 to fund this project which will also create a few extra stenciled panes to meet any future needs. During the review phase, many people have stepped forward to indicate a willingness to donate to the project. It will take contributions from many of us to meet this goal. We hope you’ll consider being a part of this exciting project.

If you have questions and missed the informational meeting and fund-raising kick off on Sunday, April 27 following the worship service, please feel free to contact a member of the Sanctuary Window Project Team.

The work will be scheduled once we meet our fundraising goal.

Sincerely,

Sally Petersen, John Truesdell, Doug Wales
