There were 136 young managers from 77 ChemChina companies taking part in a ChemChina

Experience Sharing Meeting on May 25 whose theme was “Adversity - Responsibility”. It was held in the conference room of the Beijing Guoyi Hotel. ChemChina’s vice-president, Ren Jianming, delivered the opening speech, where he noted that the main purpose of the meeting was to let ChemChina’s young managers get some professional experience in career success while getting themselves prepared for a challenging

management career. Afterwards, seven young representat ives o f ChemChina domestic companies -- Lian Wentao, Tu Shijian, Bai Fan, Zheng Hang, Luo Xiongxiong, Jiang Yongfu, and Guo Yanfei -- and three young representatives from ChemChina’s overseas companies Elkem, BSI and Makhteshim Agan -- Lionel Arras from France, Magnus Lindén from Norway, and Roni Allon from Israel -- described their track record and experiences in production, R&D, marketing and management.

ChemChina had representatives of

an HR consulting company present at the meeting, who held discussions with fi ve groups of people in various jobs, then gave performance ratings for each of these people. At the end of the meeting, Ren commented on how ChemChina has been working to train young managers and on how the meeting was a part of its young manager appointment program.

Ren then named four areas where he expects young managers to develop professionally in training and responsibility by: ·spending some time working on the shop fl oor.

·acquiring more knowledge in a meaningful way.

·developing a phi losophica l approach to thinking.

·improving emotionally. Ren concluded by saying that

the entire chemical industry faces daunting challenges in overcapacity and that it is a very competitive industry and ChemChina lacks resources and appears particularly vulnerable to these challenges. So as the future of ChemChina, young managers are expected to be fully aware of the situation and rise to the challenge of overcapacity by increasing market demand, making optimal use of the business portfolio and shifting the industrial setup while appreciating the fact that restructuring is a permanent part of business development. ■

Huaihe Chemical eliminates safety hazards with a

“golden recipe”

By Pang Yuning, Wang Yongyong

Huaihe Chemical recently went searching, across the company,

for a “golden recipe” that can eliminate all safety hazards and cut costs in the shortest possible time. As the contributions came in, they were put on the table and examined for their feasibility before corrective steps were taken. This has been the company’s approach to continued improvement for a long time at several production plants and is now applied across the company. By getting input from all employees, the company has managed to increase their awareness of the need for safety and prevent industrial accidents. At the same time, it rewards those whose suggestions are used with an appropriate monetary incentive, something that helps motivate all employees in contributing and improving safety and the environment of the company. ■

Shenyang Paraffin Chemical’s SHE management begins with safety

The Shenyang Paraffi n Chemical Co’s SHE management efforts are going

way beyond the written documents to concentrate on practical actions and further details. And, there is a safety reminder in a clearly visible position on each ladder that says “Slippery surface, hold onto the barrister”. Safety offi cers have also rebuilt a group of fi re hydrant boxes and painted them with several

coats of anti-corrosion red paint to make them clearly visible.

Previously there were some low-point steam pressure-relief valves placed at such a level that people passing by could bump their heads accidentally. An obsolete iron frame was put beneath the valve so that the operation will not be interrupted and the patrol inspectors can not pass

under the valve. Each manhole cover on the CPP plant overhaul site is now covered with a white cloth because there are many places where there is an open flame during repairs and the fireproof cloths can help prevent sparks from entering the manhole and causing spontaneous combustion or an explosion.

No.2, who helped build the Chengdu-Kunming Railway. This line was seen as something of a miracle in the history of the railway because of its formidable difficulties and Wan was a mere 20 years old at the time. Later on, after he retired, he had the aspiration of drawing a panoramic view of that railway line by piecing together the bits of paper he had used to capture the landscape along the railway, in his spare time, in the construction of the railway His collection of rough sketches and first-hand information he got by digging into his fragmented memory fi lled a trunk. So, after he retired, Wan set to work on the drawing project, and, after 10 years of continuous effort, he had a 140-meter long panoramic view of a part of his precious Chengdu-Kunming Railway, with the

title “A human miracle -- love of the mountains”. This drawing was done with common pens to feature a landscape and a railway passing between lofty, precipitous peaks. The rugged mountains, individual trees, and even the small platforms on bridges are all clearly visible. Wan has worked seven volumes of his drawings, covering three-fi fths of the total railway and the entire Sichuan province section. Wan fears he’ll not have enough time to complete the remaining work and capture the true look of the railway with his pens. He also has another wish -- applying for a Guinness World Record.

“I think I could be the fi rst person to draw the railway’s picture,” he concludes.
