Empire of Nations by Francine Hirsch Major Themes and arguments: 1. The idea of Nurture over Nature. This was a key point in Soviet ideology in direct conflict with the National Socialist movement of racial superiority. The ideological threat imposed on the Soviet Union by Germany via their idea of race superiority advanced the Soviet position on race, nationality, and culture. 2. The Soviet Union as a “nation building” state rather than a “nation breaker,” which it was referred to as in the majority of text before the collapse of the USSR. 3. That the Soviet Union could have never been realized without the use of imperial expert ethnographers from the old regime. 4. The forced development of ethnography into a Soviet research context. This led to diluted results in the late 1930’s to make the “real” fit the ideal. Key Words: Narod People Narodnost’ defined as nationality (typically used by ethnographers) natsional’nost also typically defined as nationality Natsiia Nation Sergeii Oldenburgone of the original Vladimir Lenin: ethnographers that befriended Lenin in Leader of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia the pre and post revolutionary era. http://www.biography.com/people/vladimirlenin9379007 http://www.prlib.ru/enus/History/Pages/Item.aspx?itemid=927
