LONDON - Britain faced travel chaos on Monday and some 75,000 homes were without electricity in northern France as one of the worst storms in years battered the region, sweeping at least one person out to sea.

The Met Office issued an “amber” wind warning for the region, the third highest in a four-level scale, and urged people to delay their Monday morning journeys to work to avoid the worst of the bad weather.

In northern France the storm left some 75,000 homes without power early Monday, according to the ERDF distribution network, after wind gusts reached 139 kilometres (86 miles) in some areas knocking down power lines.

The rough conditions led to rescuers suspending the search for a 14-year-old boy who was washed out to sea from a beach in East Sussex on England’s south coast.

London looked set for a chaotic rush-hour after train companies First Capital Connect, C2C, Greater Anglia, Southern and Gatwick Express services all said they would not run services on Monday until it was safe to do so. That is unlikely to be before 9:00 am (0900 GMT), according to forecasts.

Robin Gisby from line operator Network Rail warned commuters to expect severe disruption.

“If we get through this in the morning, restore the service during the afternoon and are able to start up a good service on Tuesday morning, in the circumstances I’ll be pretty pleased,” he added.

Major airports also warned of disruption to flights with London hub Heathrow expecting approximately 30 cancellations.

Cross-channel train service Eurostar said it would not be running trains on Monday until 7:00 am, meaning delays to early services.

Several ferry operators said they had cancelled some cross-Channel services and Irish Sea crossings.

Forecaster Helen Chivers told AFP the expected damage was likely to be comparable with a storm seen in October 2002.

Prime Minister David Cameron received an update from officials on contingency planning in a conference call on Sunday, amid fears of similar damage wrought by the “Great Storm” of October 1987.

That left 18 people dead in Britain and four in France, felled 15 million trees and caused damages worth more than £1 billion ($1.6 billion or 1.2 billion euros at current exchange rates) as winds blew up to 115 miles (185 kilometres) an hour.

“Bad Grandpa” stars Johnny Knoxville as an accident-prone grandfather in a hidden-camera comedy a la “Borat.”

“It’s been a very heavy fall in terms of the content of the movies, so I think audiences were ready for something com-pletely lighthearted and out of leftfield,” said box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak.

“Gravity,” which stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as astronauts on a troubled spacecraft, has soared since its debut three weeks ago. The Warner Bros. space adventure added another $20.3 mil-lion to its haul over the weekend, bringing its domestic ticket totals to nearly $200 million.

Paramount’s president of domestic distribution said it’s gratifying to see “Jackass” unseat the space adventure from its top spot. “We weren’t competing with ‘Gravity,’” said Don Harris. “We were not competitive in any other way than who was going to be No. 1 this weekend.”

Sony’s high-seas thriller “Captain Phil-

lips,” starring Tom Hanks, held on to third place with $11.8 million.

An all-star cast including Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz and Mi-chael Fassbender wasn’t enough to draw audiences to “The Counselor,” which opened in fourth place. The gritty Fox drama is a “very challenging, provocative film,” according to Chris Aronson, who heads distribution for Fox. “We’re fine,” he said. “I know we have a very competitive environment.”

He expects the film, written by Cormac McCarthy, to find its audience as it rolls out internationally in the coming weeks.

Another drama, Fox Searchlight’s “12 Years a Slave,” edged into the top 10 de-spite playing in only 123 theaters.

NEW YORK — Lou Reed, the punk poet of rock ‘n’ roll who profoundly influenced gen-erations of musicians as leader of the Velvet Underground and remained a vital solo performer for decades, died Sunday at 71.

Reed died in New York state of an ailment related to his re-cent liver transplant, according to his literary agent, Andrew Wylie, who added that Reed had been in frail health for months. Reed shared a home with his wife and fellow musician, Laurie Anderson, whom he married in 2008.

Reed never approached the commercial success of such superstars as the Beatles and Bob Dylan, but no songwriter to emerge after Dylan so radically expanded the territory of rock lyrics. And no band did more than the Velvet Underground to open rock music to the avant-garde — to experimental theater, art, literature and film, to Wil-liam Burroughs and Kurt Weill, to John Cage and Andy Warhol, Reed’s early patron.

Indie rock essentially began in the 1960s with Reed and the Velvets. Likewise, the punk, New Wave and alternative rock movements of the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s were all indebted to Reed, whose songs were covered by R.E.M., Nirvana, Patti Smith and countless others.

“The first Velvet Underground record sold 30,000 copies in the first five years,” Brian Eno, who produced albums by Roxy Music and Talking Heads, among oth-ers, once said. “I think everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band!”

Reed’s trademarks were a monotone of surprising emo-tional range and power; slash-ing, grinding guitar; and lyrics that were complex yet conver-sational, designed to make you feel as if Reed were seated next to you.

Known for his cold stare and gaunt features, he was a cynic and a seeker who seemed to embody downtown Manhattan culture of the 1960s and ‘70s and was as essential a New York artist as Martin Scorsese or Woody Allen.

LOS ANGELES — Apparently astronauts are no match for Jackass. Paramount’s “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” topped the weekend box office with $32 million, according to studio estimates Sunday, sinking three-week champ “Gravity” to second place.

KUTA - Numbers of online travels and hotels booking increase rapidly these several years make online travel agency (OTA) industry more prom-ising. An Indonesia OTA, happyholiday.travel and hotels in Bali recently conducted workshop and gathering to strengthen ties between them.

Semarapura (Bali Post)—Bukit Tengah area at Pesinggahan village, Dawan,

previously underestimated is now even drawing the at-tention of international community. In the past, this region screamed the most frequently due to difficulties in obtain-ing clean water during dry season. However, within three weeks the barren hill with rocky land contour has been transformed into a downhill bike race track. A number of downhill riders from various countries assess the down-hill track at Bukit Tengah is quite good. Even, the track along 1.6 kilometer is considered the best in Asia.

For three days, on October 25-27, the Bukit Tengah was crowded because riders from different parts of the world participated in the Asia-Pacific Downhill Chal-lenge 2013. Andre Palmer from the Orange Sport Com-munication co-organizing the event with the United Bike said on Sunday (Oct 27) that his party had an interest in the Bukit Tengah as a downhill track for four years. However, such a plan could just have been realized this year. “At first, we have checked the land contour of Bukit Tengah. Apparently, the land contour resembles with the track in Australia. So, we immediately ask a friend from Australia who has accustomed to making a natural track. And the Bukit Tengah is suitable to be made into a downhill track,” he explained.

After three weeks, the Bukit Tengah had been trans-formed into a downhill track and the result was quite classy. It did not happen solely due to the touch of the organizer. However, indeed the condition of Bukit Tengah was naturally suitable to be transformed into a downhill track. “By and large, when making a track, we usually make dirt jump, but at Bukit Tengah we do not. All tracks are natural. We invite riders to come here before the championship, all said it was excited,” he said. He

also said to have invited a Japanese sport reporter, and the reporter named the track at Bukit Tengah as number one in Asia. With the addition of a downhill track in Bali, he said that Indonesia had totally owned seven downhill tracks often used as the venue to hold a national championship.

Andre said there were several factors distinguishing the downhill track at Bukit Tengah from the track in general in Indonesia and other Asian countries. The track at Bukit Tengah had hard and rocky ground contour so it became a challenge to be conquered by riders. The track with such condition was pretty hard to be passed through by riders in the championship. In addition, the downhill location could serve as a gut test for riders. Any mistake made could make the life at stake. At least, it was visible when making a free practice and qualification or retrieval time where a lot of riders falling on the track caused them to suffer arm and leg fractures while others fell into the abyss.

Condition of the track was recognized by one of local riders from Makassar, Awal Jayadi. The rider under the D’Macs Club admitted the track at Bukit Tengah, along his experience to participate in the championship, was the most difficult and challenging. When met after the final run on Sunday, a rider joining in the Master A class, admitted that a lot of colleagues fell and were unable to make the championship at Bukit Tengah. “It’s a natural track with a high difficulty level. It is steep, rocky and has too high elevation. Without readiness of mental and skill, it will surely fail before the final run,” he said.

Meanwhile, Andre Palmer hoped to hold a similar championship every year at the track of Bukit Tengah because the response of riders was pretty good and the sponsor was excellent. (kmb13)

Aside from being prone to accident, the winding and ascending path often causes traffic congestion, especially on certain days such as Ga-lungan or Nyepi. When large-size bus or truck is passing the area, other vehicles must stop in order the large bus or truck can pass.

Under such condition, the Buleleng House urged the government, both provincial and county government to immediately take action to fix the road section before the other fatal accident occurred again. For a while, the government could make a shortcut on certain lines so that the road condition become more fluent and could be easily passed through.

Chairman of the PDI-P Faction in the Buleleng House, Mangku Mer-tayasa, revealed on Sunday (Oct 27) the Denpasar-Singaraja line via Be-dugul was getting busier. Besides, many tourist buses were also passing in the lane, residents of Buleleng working in Denpasar or students from Southern Bali attending college in Singaraja also passed almost every week back and forth in the path. “Not to mention there are many points of crowded tourist attractions such as at Bedugul, Botanical Garden, Lake Buyan, Lake Tamblingan and Wanagiri area,” he said.

So far, said Mangku Mertayasa, the path was always improved such as by widening and hardening with hot mixed asphalt. However, the improvement had not resolved the traffic congestion problem and inse-curity in the pathway. “The urgent thing needed is to make a shortcut to cut hazardous curves so they will be straighter and more secure. Such solution has been made at Denpasar-Gilimanuk line. Why has such solution not been made for Singaraja - Denpasar line?” he said.

To that end, Mangku Mertayasa asked the Buleleng and Bali govern-ment to immediately do serious lobbying to central government in order the national lines could be fixed more seriously with more funds. “I think local government and provincial government should immediately beg funds, at least the pathway can become safer,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Commission B of the Buleleng House, Mangku Budiasa, said that all this time the governor had put the repair of Singaraja-Denpasar pathway into discourse for several times by making it a safer road section. To that end, he requested the discourse to be realized in 2014. “I often hear that governor puts the repair of Singaraja-Denpasar pathway into discourse, whether by the making of shortcut, bypass or whatever its name is. Obviously, the discourse should be realized so the Singaraja-Denpasar line can be safer,” he said.

As reported, two accidents drew the public attention during the past two weeks. A truck accident transporting zinc got accident at KM 15 on Jalan Raya Singaraja-Denpasar, precisely at Wirabhuana hamlet, Gitgit village, Sukasada subdistrict, Wednesday (Oct 16) around 00:30 a.m. The truck fell into a ravine claiming four casualties at the scene.

The four casualties were truck driver, Mardiono, 40, living at Bak-tiseraga village, Singaraja, and tree porters namely Kadek Mudita, 35, Kadek Suparbawa, 21, and Kadek Sukadana, 34, from Kusia hamlet, Bebetin village, Sawan subdistrict.

Another accident occurred on Jalan Raya Singaraja-Denpasar on Monday (Oct 21). A Grand Max pickup truck got accident when enter-ing the KM 15, precisely at Pumahan hamlet, Gitgit village, Sukasada subdistrict. There were no fatalities reported in the accident. However, five people should be rushed to Buleleng Hospital for intensive care due to serious injuries. (kmb15)

Digs over the years have un-earthed bones of mammoths, mast-odons, saber-toothed cats, dire wolves and other unsuspecting Ice Age creatures that became trapped in ponds of sticky asphalt. But it’s the smaller discoveries — plants, insects and rodents — in recent years that are shaping scientists’ views of life in the region 11,000 to 50,000 years ago.

“Earlier excavations really missed a great part of the story,” said John Harris, chief curator at the George C. Page Museum, which oversees the fossil collec-tion. People “were only taking out bones they could see, but it’s the hidden bones that provide clues to the environment.”

The museum on Monday cel-ebrates 100 years of digging, which has recovered some 5.5 million bones representing more than 600 species of animals and plants, the richest cache of Ice Age fossils.

There is so much left to do that it could easily take another century to complete. On a recent Wednes-day, a volunteer in a white lab coat pounded away at a bison skull in the museum’s fishbowl labora-tory where visitors can witness

paleontology in action. Nearby, two workers hunched over microscopes, sorting bone fragments belonging to extinct creatures.

In the back storage, floor-to-ceiling shelves of wooden crates house bones that need to be cleaned, identified or labeled. The museum estimates it has 100,000 specimens to catalog and another million to scrub.

Long before skyscrapers tow-ered over Wilshire Boulevard, giant beasts ruled the land. Back then, sagebrush scrub covered the basin, home to herds of mammoths, bison, camels and ground sloths. Mast-odons hung out in the woodlands. Lurking were meat-eating predators including saber-toothed cats, dire wolves and giant jaguars.

Every so often, creatures would get bogged down in pools of water and asphalt that seeped from un-derground crude oil deposits, and die of dehydration or starvation. Stranded animals that appeared to be easy prey then became a trap for predators that also got stuck in the ooze.

In 1913, the predecessor to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County launched a two-year project to uncover only the

best-preserved mammal bones, largely ignoring everything else. Though the early digs gave sci-entists a glimpse into the types of animals that roamed, there was still much to be learned.

After the early missteps, scien-tists in 1969 decided to focus on pulling everything out and revisited a tar pit dubbed Pit 91 to do a more detailed excavation. For nearly 40 years, work at Pit 91 dominated the Page Museum’s efforts as visitors gawked from a viewing platform.

Museum officials temporarily halted digging at Pit 91 several years ago to concentrate on an un-expected trove of Ice Age fossils that was found during the construc-tion of an underground garage next to the tar pits, located some 7 miles (11 kilometers) west of downtown Los Angeles.

“I can’t think of any other site that is as rich,” said Sarah George, executive director of the Natural History Museum of Utah.

Every time a foundation is dug, “more old blocks of tar filled with fossils came out of the ground,” said George, who used to work as a cura-tor at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

HADERA, Israel — When Israel’s military chief delivered a high-profile speech this month outlining the greatest threats his country might face in the future, he listed computer sabotage as a top concern, warning a sophisticated cyberattack could one day bring the nation to a standstill.

Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz was not speaking empty words. Exactly one month before his address, a major artery in Israel’s national road network in the northern city of Haifa was shut down because of a cyberattack, cybersecurity experts tell The Associated Press, knocking key operations out of commission two days in a row and causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

One expert, speaking on condition of anonymity because the breach of security was a classified matter, said a Trojan horse attack targeted the security camera system in the Carmel Tunnels toll road on Sept. 8. A Trojan horse is a malicious computer program that users unknowingly install that can give hackers complete control over their systems.

The attack caused an immediate 20-minute lockdown of the roadway. The next day, the expert said, it shut down the roadway again during morning rush hour. It remained shut for eight hours, causing massive congestion.

The expert said investigators believe the attack was the work of unknown, sophisticated hackers, similar to the Anonymous hacking group that led attacks on Israeli websites in April. He said investigators determined it was not sophisticated enough to be the work of an enemy government like Iran.

The expert said Israel’s National Cyber Bureau, a two-year-old clas-sified body that reports to the prime minister, was aware of the incident. The bureau declined comment, while Carmelton, the company that over-sees the toll road, denied being hacked, blaming only a “communication glitch” for the mishap.

While Israel is a frequent target of hackers, the tunnel is the most high-profile landmark known to have been attacked. It is a major thoroughfare for Israel’s third-largest city, and the city is looking to turn the tunnel into a public shelter in case of emergency, highlighting its importance.

The incident is exactly the type of scenario that Gantz described in his recent address. He said Israel’s future battles might begin with “a cyberattack on websites which provide daily services to the citizens of Israel. Traffic lights could stop working, the banks could be shut down,” he said.

Bali PostDENPASAR - Throughout June to Octo-

ber is high season for tourism sector in Bali. However, the hotel occupancy rate has not reached 100 percent. Deputy Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Asso-ciation (PHRI) of Bali, I Gusti Ngurah Rai Suryawijaya, said that hotel occupancy rate in Bali stayed in the range of 70 percent.

“This October remains good because it coincides with high season. Overseas, people get into winter, so that many tourists come to Bali to look for the sun,” he said when contacted.

According to him, a surge would oc-cur in December considering there would be Christmas celebration and followed by the festive celebration of New Year’s Eve 2014.

“Usually tourists begin bustling on December 27 until January 5, 2014,” he continued. Although there had been an implementation of APEC some time ago, in fact, it had not been able to boost the

tourist arrival especially in this year. Rai Suryawijaya said the benefits of the APEC implementation in Bali could have just been felt next year.

“Now, the APEC participants have just returned to their home country and told about the beauty of Bali. Next year, we can feel the increase in the tourism sector in Bali,” he explained.

Today, tourist arrivals were still dominat-ed by Australians. Meanwhile, the European and U.S. tourists remained relatively stable. Shut down against the government in the Uncle Sam’s country apparently did not have significant influence on tourism activities.

“Tourist arrival from the United States remains good. Last year in the same period, it has reached 800,000 people and now has reached over 700,000. Till the end of the year, there will be definitely an increase, though it is not significant. The problem usually happens in the airlines because today there is no direct flight as in the past,” said Chairman of the PHRI Badung. (kmb32)

The Acting Head of the Badung Highways and Irrigation Agency, Ida Bagus Surya Suamba, accom-panied by Spokesperson of Badung government, AA Gede Raka Yuda, recently revealed that beautifica-tion of tourism area was primar-ily undertaken through the quality improvement of infrastructure. In Kuta, for example, the pavement took advantage of granite material whose price was not cheap.

Unfortunately, although it had been arranged in such a way, the sidewalks in Kuta were still widely utilized for parking space. Most of those using the sidewalk as a parking space were the employees of businesses in Kuta area because they did not provide adequate park-ing space. As a result, the sidewalks were damaged at many points.

On the other hand, the drains ex-perienced siltation or blockage quite rapidly so the potential for flooding was high when it rained. One of the main factors causing the rapid siltation was the disposal of waste mainly from tourist accommodation directly discharging theirs into the drainage channel.

“The government has asked

the employers to subscribe the Denpasar Sewerage Development Project (DSDP). However, so far some tourism business premises are still disposing their waste into the drainage channel. The sewage in the form of fat coming into the drain eventually accelerates the siltation. We indeed admit that to arouse the awareness of employers still takes time,” he said.

So, what are the efforts taken by Badung government to maintain the infrastructure in the tourist area? Surya Suamba mentioned the Badung Highways and Irriga-tion Agency had prepared special equipment for cleaning up the drains and sidewalks in the form of vacuum cleaner hood and street washer truck.

Vacuum cleaner truck was func-tioned to suck and clean up sedi-ment in drainage channels. The truck consisted of several special components such as vacuum tank, vacuum pump, dehydrator system, lifting system and tipping system. Meanwhile, the street washer truck was functioned to clean up road and sidewalk by means of high-pressure water spray. (kmb25)

The area beautification program and maintenance of drainage channels in tourism area espe-cially in Kuta have not been running optimally. This happens because many tourism accom-modation businesses and people do not take advantage of the infrastructure as it should.

Negara (Bali Post)—Since the past three months, the

water subscription of the Municipal Waterworks (PDAM) for hundreds of families at Kaleran and Wali hamlet, Yehembang village, has not worked. As a result, hundreds of residents face clean water crisis. To meet their needs, they have to collect water on foot to the irrigation water owned by local subak as far as five kilometers.

From the information obtained, at least 500 households at the two hamlets were experiencing water shortages. More seriously,

most of them did not have a well. Meanwhile, some wells of local residents had dried up. Agung Bagus Dwijana, 43, a resident of Kaleran hamlet, said on Sunday (Oct 27) that local residents had faced clean water crisis for three months. The water of PDAM was not flowing and such condition forced them to take water from the irrigation channel located far away from home. Within a day, residents could take water for two times by jerry cans for the need of bathing, washing and drinking.

Another Kaleran resident, Nyo-man Arsana, 42, admitted that

he took water for 10 times to the irrigation channel, even though it reached five kilometers. Fortunately, location of the subak irrigation chan-nel could be covered by motorcycle though the pathway was steep.

Last Sunday, the irrigation chan-nel was thronged by local residents from both hamlets. They mostly carried jerry cans for collecting water. Meanwhile, there were also housewives utilizing the water in the channel for washing clothes. Resi-dents hoped there would clean water assistance for both hamlets.

Headman of Yehembang, I Made

Semadi, claimed to have received public complaints regarding the water supply at the two hamlets. The water crisis was caused by the drought so the PDAM water supply did not work. To anticipate such condition, village authority had submitted a proposal to Jembrana government in order to be made a cistern at each hamlet. The cistern would be used to collect water from the forest and then distributed to residents. As for initial anticipation, his party would coordinate with the PDAM to provide a cistern at each hamlet hall. (kmb26)

Ration of the tourist service has been distributed to farmers since 2009. Incidentally, the overlay of local subak area offers exotic panorama for ATV tour package. “Every month, we provide com-pensation for the subak. Besides,

we have also had a contract agreement with landowners,” said Manager of the ATV Tour at Subak Piling, Wayan Puja, Satur-day afternoon (Oct 26). The other compensation was the employ-ment opportunity where almost

the entire workers consisted of the locals so that the tourism activity also empowered the potential at the village.

He explained the ATV tour package was one of the driving forces for farmers to maintain

their subak. By that way, they could remain active as a farmer and then got compensation from the tourism activity. Other than lo-cal tourists, the ATV tour package was also favored by foreign tour-ists because the location was quite fascinating as it crossed the rice fields. Meanwhile, all participants were also faced with challenging path of water passage.

“Essentially, we do not only develop tourism, but also the

agriculture as the more important component for the continuation of subak,” he said. The subak preservation, he said, remained to become a tourist attraction. So, almost every day many for-eign tourists made a visit to this attraction. They were invited to explore the cliffs and steep rice fields. More interestingly, they were also taken to drop by at local spring becoming the excellence of local village. (kmb30)

Subak farmers get contribution from ATV

Tabanan (Bali Post)—Farmers at Subak Piling, Mengesta village, Penebel, have a new source of income. Aside from farm-

ing, they also get regular contribution from local tourist attraction. It happens because their farmland is traversed by ATV ride attraction provided for tourists. Although the amount is not much, the contribu-tion makes them happy.

Mangupura (Bali Post)—The matter of turbid water

of the Municipal Waterworks (PDAM) flowing into consum-ers’ home at Sedahan hamlet, Gulingan village, began to be resolved. The water can now be used for day-to- day needs. Un-fortunately, the water supply has started not to run smoothly since Sunday (Oct 27).

It was revealed by the hamlet chief of Sedahan, Ketut Su-haryana. According to him, the water of PDAM formerly being turbid and black had already been resolved. Although it was not as clear as before, people had started to take advantage of the water of PDAM.

Nevertheless, the water of PDAM flowing into consumers’ home was even not as smooth as before. It had begun to stag-nate since Sunday morning. Not infrequently, the water flowed haltingly. Therefore, his party expected the issue could be re-solved.

When asked for separate con-firmation, Director of PDAM Tirta Mangutama of Badung County, I Made Subarga Yasa, revealed the repair of drain-age around the area had been resolved. The issue of water supply to the house of residents had gradually turned to normal. Nevertheless, his party promised to keep monitoring until the wa-ter supply to residents’ home was back to completely normal.

As reported previously, the residents of Sedahan hamlet complained about the turbid water supply. Such problem had been experienced by resi-dents from Tuesday (Oct 22). Residents claimed to be disap-pointed because the water had a problem precisely when it was much needed for various purposes in relation to Galungan celebration. (kmb25)

Spain on Friday resisted calls from Germany for the European Union’s 28 member states to reach a “no-spy deal”, similar to an agreement Berlin and Paris are seeking, though Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said the country was looking for more information.

El Mundo newspaper on Monday reproduced a graphic, which it said was an NSA document showing the agency had spied on 60.5 million phone calls in Spain between Decem-ber 10, 2012 and January 8 this year.

The newspaper said it had reached a deal with Glenn Greenwald, the Bra-zil-based journalist who has worked with other media on information provided to him by Snowden, to get access to documents affecting Spain. El Mundo said the telephone monitor-ing did not appear to track the content

of calls but their duration and where they took place.

Spain’s European secretary of state and the U.S. ambassador in Spain were scheduled to meet on Monday, after Rajoy said on Friday he too would seek more details from the ambassador. “We’ll see once we have more information if we decide to join with what France and Germany have done,” Rajoy told a news conference in Brussels on Friday.

“But these aren’t decisions which correspond to the European Union but questions related to national security and exclusive responsibility of mem-ber states. France and Germany have decided to do one thing and the rest of us may decide to do the same, or something else.” Snowden is currently living in Russia, out of reach of U.S. attempts to arrest him.

ROME — Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi has picked up an overdue honor from Rome, a city she fondly recalled enjoy-ing, along with its gelato, 40 years earlier. The Nobel Peace Prize winner received Rome’s honorary citizenship Sunday night in City Hall on the ancient Capitoline Hill.

In 1994, Rome had conferred the honor in absentia on Suu Kyi, a champion of democracy who spent years as a political prisoner in her homeland.

She and her National League for Democracy party were frozen out of politics by the military regime that governed until 2011, and last year she and several dozen party members won par-liamentary seats.

In picking up the honor Sun-day, she recalled visiting Rome while a student at Oxford. On Monday, Suu Kyi meets with Pope Francis at the Vatican.

SEOUL, South Korea — Six South Koreans recently repatriated from North Korea had sneaked into the North in search of better lives but ended up detained for up to 45 months for illegal entry, Seoul officials said Monday.

South Koreans defecting to impoverished, totalitarian North Korea are rare. In contrast, more than 25,000 North Koreans have fled to the South for politi-cal and economic reasons since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. The two Koreas bar ordinary citizens from freely traveling across their mutual border, and in September South Korean soldiers fatally shot one of their citizens they thought was trying to enter North Korea.

North Korea sent back the six men and a woman’s corpse on Friday in an unusual action seen as an attempt to improve strained ties between the rival countries after the North’s abrupt cancellations last month of reunions of families separated by the war. Tensions spiked dramatically this past spring over North Korea’s repeated threats of nuclear war. A South Korean security official said Monday that the men told investigators they entered North Korea between 2009 and 2012 by walking over frozen rivers from China, or swimming after jumping off a Chinese cruise ship on a border river.

The men had vague hopes that they could have better lives in North Korea after suffering business failures and family troubles, or engaging in pro-North Korea activities in South Korea, said the official, who requested anonymity because an investigation is still under way.

One person who posted pro-North Korea online messages believed he would be treated better in North Korea after finding that his pen name had been reported by the North’s main Rodong Sinmun newspaper, the official said.

The six men were separately detained in North Korea for 14-45 months for questioning. One said he was constantly held in solitary confinement, while another said he didn’t receive medical treatment for a kidney stone, according to the South Korean official.

MADRID - The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) recently tracked over 60 million calls in Spain in the space of a month, a Spanish newspaper said on Monday, citing a document which it said formed part of papers obtained from ex-NSA contractor Edward Snowden. Spain’s government has so far said it was not aware its citizens had been spied on by the NSA, which has been accused of accessing tens of thousands of French phone records and monitoring the phone of German chancellor Angela Merkel.

The moon of Pejeng is a Balinese bronze kettledrum believed to have a supernatural power. It is placed in the Penataran Sasih Temple at Pejeng Village, Tampaksiring, Gianyar. The kettledrum is considered sa-cred and said if it is not human-made but

rather fell from the sky. Allegedly, it was previously used in the ceremony of invok-ing rain.

There are many legends related to this kettledrum. One of which is that the kettle-drum was formerly a wheel of heavenly train exuding bright shines, so that the night in ancient time was always bright. Another leg-

end says that the kettledrum was an earware of Goddess Ratih (Goddess of the Moon in Balinese mythology).

According to ancient narrative, it is also told if there were 13 moons above the earth. Once upon a time, one of the moons fell to the earth and caught in a tree branch. The rays emitted by the moon were so bright.

As consequence, no thief would dare steal at night. However, at some point the thieves made a discussion and they agreed to put out the moon. One of the thieves climbed the tree and tried to extinguish the moon filled with flames by urinating it. Instantly the moon went out and one of the pieces turned into the kettledrum of Pejeng.

“Due to narrowing farmland, it’s no wonder if they (farmers) can be referred to as small farmers or smallholders. Such condition has an impact on the helplessness and lack of seriousness of farmer in cultivating their farmland,” said Suparta when contacted on Sunday (Oct 27).

He explained that farmland conversion occurred during the

period of 1997-2007 approximately reached 661 hectares or about 0.8 percent per year. Most lands were functioned for tourism facilities such as hotels, restaurants, villas as well as residential and com-mercial development. In addition, the land conversion had also hap-pened to plantation area or moor and forestry.

Suparta added that if such con-

dition was neglected without any control, it could lead to degradation of land and water resources, weak-ening of farmers’ competitiveness, low efficiency, lack of marketing of products, lack of seriousness and self-reliance of farmers and weak law enforcement. Besides, he said, the status of farmer’s life in Bali would also be getting more sluggish and they would definitely look for other livelihoods.

“That’s why the remaining farm-ers today are only part-time farmers and they just constantly lament their poverty,” he said.

Land conversion alone could happen, according to him, due to the share of structural policies and the shift of socio-economic values that had resulted in the necessity

for farmers to sell their cultivated land. Decrease in the cultivated land was also evident from the decrease in the number of farmers indicated by the agricultural census in 2013 made by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).

Based on preliminary data of the Agricultural Census 2013, the number of farming households in Bali province showed a decline of 83,496 households, from 491,725 households in 2003 to 408,229 households in 2013. Even, the decrease in the number of farm-ing households occurred in nearly all counties/municipality across Bali where the average decline reached 1.84 percent per year.

Based on the data released by the Central Statistics Agency

(BPS) of Bali, the biggest de-crease occurred in Buleleng County and the lowest occurred in Denpasar, respectively dropped as much as 21,746 businesses and 5,143 businesses for ten years. “Quantitatively, the highest in-deed occurred in Buleleng Coun-ty where it amounts to more than 21,000 households. It is indicated by high land conversion used for activities beyond the agriculture, plantation and livestock. But interestingly, the highest percent-age of decline precisely occurred in Gianyar County where the decline reached 3.18 percent. Well, probably many people are shifting their profession to other sector,” said Gde Suarsa, the Head of BPS Bali. (kmb28)

BEIJING — China Construction Bank Ltd., one of China’s “big four” state-owned commercial lenders, said Monday profit growth slowed in the latest quarter as the economy cooled.

Profit for the three months ended Sept. 30 rose 9.4 percent to 56.8 billion yuan ($9 billion), the Beijing-based lender said. That was down from 12.3 percent growth for the first nine months of the year. Revenue rose 10.4 percent to 126.6 billion yuan ($20 billion).

China’s state-owned banks are among the world’s most profitable but earnings growth has slowed as rapid economic expansion cools. Banks also are preparing for a pos-

sible rise in loan defaults following a flood of credit in response to the 2008 global crisis.

Economic growth edged up to 7.8 percent in the latest quarter from the previous quarter’s two-decade low of 7.5 percent, but that is barely half of 14.2 percent in 2009. Analysts say the recovery might weaken later in the year.

Chinese banks also face a squeeze on profits as the Communist Party gradually introduces market forces into lending. That could push down lending rates and force banks to pay more for deposits, narrowing their current margins of about 3 percent, which are among the world’s wid-est.

Until recently, the state-owned banking industry lent mostly to

state industry and forced depositors to subsidize borrowers by holding down rates paid on savings ac-counts. Reformers want to open up that system to make more credit available to entrepreneurs. Forc-ing banks to compete for deposits would shift more money to Chinese consumers.

Ruling party leaders are due to meet in November to try to produce a new long-term economic devel-opment blueprint. Economists and business groups say state-dominated financial industries are among the most likely candidates for changes.

Construction Bank is the first of the major Chinese banks to report results for the latest quarter.

Net interest, which accounted for 78 percent of total income, rose 8.2

percent to 98.8 billion yuan ($15.8 billion). That growth was down from 9.7 percent in the first nine months of the year.

In July, regulators announced an end to controls on lending rates, which would allow borrowers with stronger credit records to shop around for cheaper loans. That would cut their costs but would squeeze bank profits.

Chinese regulators also have promised other changes in banking, including possibly allowing pri-vately owned lenders, but the ruling party has yet to decide on the timing and scope of reforms.

China Construction bank said its assets were 15 trillion yuan ($2.4 trillion) as of Sept. 30, up 7.3 percent from the end of last year.

In Tokyo morning trade the greenback bought 97.59 yen, up from 97.43 yen in New York Friday after-noon, while the euro rose to $1.3812 and 134.75 yen from $1.3805 and 134.50 yen.

The Fed’s two-day mon-etary policy meeting opens Tuesday and investors will pore over its decision for an idea of when it will start cutting back its $85 bil-lion a month bond buying scheme.

There had been wide-spread belief it would be-gin tapering by December at the latest but analysts say weak jobs data and this month’s government shutdown has made that unlikely.

On Friday, official fig-ures showed a 3.7 percent jump in US durable goods orders. However, excluding transportation equipment, orders fell 0.1 percent, while core capital goods orders, a sign of future business investment, fell 1.1 percent.

The central bank has said any tapering hinges on a firm recovery in the world’s biggest economy.

“The US dollar remains on the back foot, finding little help from data releas-es, especially last week’s September employment report,” Credit Agricole said.

“Friday’s release of Sep-tember durable goods or-ders similarly disappointed, with core orders coming in weaker than anticipated.”

JAKARTA — Indonesia’s capital is getting rid of the monkey business. Security forces are conducting raids to rescue macaques used in masked mon-key performances on Jakarta’s streets.

The order came from Jakarta Gov. Joko Widodo, better known as “Jokowi,” who wants all roadside monkey per-formances — known here as topeng monyet — gone by next year.

He said that besides improving pub-lic order and stopping animal abuse, the move is aimed at preventing diseases carried by the monkeys.

The city government will buy back all monkeys used as street buskers for about $90 and shelter them at a 1-hect-are (2.5-acre) preserve at Jakarta’s Ra-gunan Zoo. The handlers and caretakers will be provided vocational training to help find new jobs.

Animal rights groups have long cam-paigned for a ban on the shows, which often involve monkeys wearing plastic baby doll heads on their faces. They say the monkeys are hung from chains for long periods to train them to walk on their hind legs like humans. Their teeth are pulled so they can’t bite, and they are tortured to remain obedient. The monkeys are often outfitted in dresses and cowboy hats and forced to carry parasols or ride tiny bikes.

Femke den Haas of the Jakarta Ani-mal Aid Network welcomed the deci-sion, saying at least 22 monkeys have been rescued since the sweep began last week and quarantined for health issues. She estimated about 350 animals work as street performers in Jakarta, adding they are no longer able to live with other primates in zoos and cannot defend themselves in the wild.

In 2011, backed by the city admin-istration, the group rescued 40 mon-keys used in shows, which are often performed when traffic is backed up at Jakarta’s notoriously congested in-tersections. Many suffered illnesses, including tuberculosis and hepatitis.

Many of the macaques are trained at a slum area in eastern Jakarta, known locally as “monkey village.” A trained macaque can be sold for up to $135.

“In essence, I handed over responsibilities to the new chief,” Timur said during a ceremony at the National Police Headquarters.

He noted that he had formally reported all his working programs and tasks that have been, or still need, to be completed.

“Mr. Tarman (Commissioner General Su-tarman) was also included in the report on the implementation of tasks and duties that I had submitted so he could easily and immediately make connections and accelerate the imple-mentation of those tasks that have not yet been finished,” he said.

Timur said one of the jobs that has not yet been completed regards cases of police shootings.

He denied that different perceptions had occurred among elite police unit members in handling terrorism that might be considered as having been less responsive.

“I do not think so. It has all been carried out well, from planning to real implementation by police units,” he said.

With regard to his achievements, General Timur Pradopo said there is still much to be done and he was optimistic that his replacement would be able to finish the tasks.

Commissioner General Sutarman was of-ficially appointed by President Susilo Bam-bang Yudhoyono at the presidential palace on Friday.

He was the only candidate that President Yudhoyono had submitted to the House of Representatives for approval.

General Timur Pradopo is scheduled to of-ficially handed over his post to Commissioner General Sutarman in a ceremony at the Mobile Brigade Headquarters in Kelapa Dua, Depok, West Java, on Tuesday.

AntaraJAKARTA - Thousands of young people

in major cities across Indonesia observed the 85th anniversary of Youth Pledge Day on Monday with a commitment to developing the national character.

The Youth Pledge was first declared on October 28, 1928 by young Indonesian na-tionalists at a conference in the then-Dutch East Indies, when they proclaimed three ideals: one motherland, one nation, and one language: Indonesia.

This year, the commemoration was ob-served simultaneously in Jakarta and several other cities, including Bekasi and Bandung in West Java, Semarang in Central Java, and Solok in West Sumatra.

In Jakarta, the commemoration of Youth Pledge Day was led by Governor Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi, at the National Monument square.

Youth and Sport Affairs Minister Roy Suryo noted, in a written statement read by Jokowi, that Youth Pledge Day was a momentous occasion intended to inspire the nation’s youth to embrace the concept of “one motherland, one nation, and one language: Indonesia.”

He said the commemoration of Youth Pledge Day was meant to build unity among the younger generation in Indonesia.

Roy Suryo noted that the commemoration of Youth Pledge Day this year is a moral, social, political, and cultural movement for youths to increase their abilities and to find

ways to cooperate with their peers in the ASEAN Community 2015.

Meanwhile, the Bekasi branch of Indo-nesian National Youth Committee (KNPI) Chairman Nuryadi Dharmawan said, to date, there has not been as much cooperation as there might be between youths and local gov-ernment because of the absence of funds from the regional budget to the KNPI in 2013.

He added that youths in Bekasi have been improving their abilities independently, without encouragement from the local gov-ernment.

According to the youth and sport minister, the nation’s youths should seek to improve their academic quality, moral integrity and leadership capabilities to better Indonesia in the future.

In order to achieve the goals of the pledge, lawmaker of the Commission III of the House of Representatives, Eva Kusuma Sundari, said in Semarang that young people today should avoid illegal drugs and take an oath to fight corruption.

She said youths should put an end to the fact that every year hundreds of trillions of rupiahs were stolen by corrupt people in the forestry industries.

Similarly, the country suffers a potential loss of up to Rp50 trillion a year from the natural wealth of the sea natural, she added.

“Therefore, Indonesian youths should declare a jihad against Mafia in the educa-tion, mining and various other sectors,” she said.

In this photo taken on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, a trained monkey that has had his teeth pulled out reacts as it is being photographed in its cage at a village where many street performers live, in Jakarta, Indonesia. Security forces are fan-ning out across Jakarta conducting raids to rescue macaques used in popular street masked monkey per-formances in a move aimed at im-proving public order and preventing diseases carried by the monkeys as well as to stop animal abuse.

Sarinah, 37, who owns 13 monkeys used in the daily street shows, said the ban has hurt her livelihood. Seven of her macaques have been confiscated in recent raids.

“Of course I’m disappointed ... but I cannot do anything!” said Sarinah, a mother of three who uses a single name like many Indonesians.

She said she takes good care of the animals and loves them like her own children.

“They are the source of our life, how could we be cruel to them? No way,” she said, adding that she earns about $3 daily from each monkey rented out to handlers.

She said she will keep her remain-ing monkeys hidden while waiting for a new job.

The mayor of Bandung, the provin-cial capital of West Java, has announced plans to ban monkey shows there as well.

Martin Young, chief forecaster at the Met Office, said: “While this is a major storm for the UK, we don’t currently expect winds to be as strong as those seen in the ‘Great Storm’ of 1987 or the ‘Burns Day storm’ of 1990.

“We could see some uprooted trees or other damage from the winds and there’s a chance of some surface water flooding from the rainfall -- all of which could lead to some disruption.”

Veteran weather forecaster Michael Fish also said Sunday’s storm was unlikely to be as severe as 26 years ago, although his comments will be taken with a pinch of salt in Britain.

Fish was the BBC’s main television weatherman in 1987 but fa-mously denied that a major storm was on its way just hours before it hit.

This year’s storm has been named St Jude after the patron saint of lost causes, whose feast day is on Monday.

They are among eight defen-dants facing a jury for the first time over the scandal two years ago that rocked the British newspaper indus-try and sent shockwaves through the British establishment.

Brooks, 45, arrived at the Old Bailey court in London to a storm of photographers’ flashes, accom-panied by her racehorse trainer hus-band Charlie, who is also on trial.

Dressed in a camel-coloured coat, Brooks looked relaxed and smiled as she walked into the court building, while her husband wore a smart blue suit. Coulson, also 45, arrived with his legal team.

The defendants face charges ranging from illegally hacking the mobile phone voicemails of 600 people including a murdered schoolgirl and celebrities such as Paul McCartney and Jude Law, plus bribing public officials for stories and hiding evidence.

The trial was originally sched-uled to last four months, but due to its complexity it could now run for six months.

The jury is expected to hear explosive testimony about the scandal that forced Australian-born Murdoch to shut down the News of the World in disgrace in 2011, and threatened to drag in Prime Minis-ter David Cameron’s government.

The trial formally opens on Mon-day, but the prosecution’s opening statement is expected to come later in the week as the day will be taken up with jury selection.

The main players are Brooks, the flame-haired former chief executive of Murdoch’s British newspaper operations, and Coulson, the savvy tabloid journalist who became director of communications for Cameron.

Brooks, who rose from a secre-tary to edit the News of the World

and its daily sister paper The Sun and became one of Murdoch’s closest confidantes, denies phone hacking, conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office, and perverting the course of justice.

Her 50-year-old husband, her personal assistant Cheryl Carter, 49, and former News International security chief Mark Hanna, 50, deny obstructing justice along with Brooks herself by concealing evidence in the frantic last days of the News of the World.

Coulson, also a former News of the World editor, denies hacking and paying officials for a Buck-ingham Palace phone directory containing contact details for senior royals.

Also on trial are former News of the World managing editor Stu-art Kuttner and head of news Ian Edmondson, who both deny phone hacking.

Beijing - Five people including a woman from the Philippines died after a vehicle crashed through a barrier in Beijing’s Tianan-men Square on Monday and caught fire, with 38 injured, state media said, raising an earlier toll.

The official Xinhua news agency, which gave the updated toll on Twitter, earlier said the SUV driver and two passengers in the vehicle had died.

Qianlong.net, which is run by Beijing city authorities, said the other two victims were tourists, one a woman from the Philippines and the other a Chinese man.

Moscow - Russia on Monday described as “outrageous” a threat by powerful rebel groups in Syria against those who attend peace talks on the conflict backed by Moscow and Washington. “It is outrageous that some of these extremist, terrorist organisations fighting government forces in Syria are starting to make threats,” Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in televised comments.

“The threats are directed at those who have the courage to attend the proposed Geneva conference being offered by Russia and the United States with the entire world’s support.”

Nineteen Islamist groups fighting to topple Assad issued a statement on Sunday saying the proposed conference “is not, nor will it ever be our people’s choice or our revolution’s demand.” They went on to say that anyone who attends such talks would be committing “treason” and “would have to answer for it before our courts.” The Geneva conference was proposed jointly by Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry in May but has since been repeatedly delayed.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is still to name a formal date for the proposed meeting despite comments from some Syrian and Arab nation officials suggesting the talks could be held late next month.

Lavrov said the Islamist commanders’ threats implied that Rus-sian “diplomatic representative offices and diplomats (working) in foreign countries would be legitimate targets” of assassination and other attacks.

“This is all outrageous and unacceptable. And all of this, in the end, rests on the conscience of those who finance and arm these opposition groups,” Russia’s top diplomat said.

Vettel, still only 26, chalked up his 36th career win in 117 races at the Indian Grand Prix on Sunday to seal his fourth successive crown.

“His win record is quite incred-ible,” Horner told reporters when asked whether Schumacher’s aston-ishing records, which many people thought would last down the gener-ations when he left Ferrari in 2006, looked vulnerable. Schumacher won 91 races, with Benetton and Ferrari, from 307 starts.

“There’s so many things in this sport that determine that. It depends on being in the right machinery as well, but from a skill point of view there’s absolutely no reason why not,” Horner added.

Vettel led from pole position on Sunday, winning in India for the third year in a row, and both Horner and Red Bull design genius Adrian Newey said the German was still improving. “I think Sebastian has grown this year. The way he’s driven, the level at which he’s de-livered, it’s been his best ever year. He’s raised the bar continually,” Horner said.

Newey, who has won titles with three different teams (Williams,

McLaren and Red Bull) in his stel-lar career and worked with greats like four times champion Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna, had no doubt that Vettel was up there with them.

Numbers alone, he said, mat-tered less than the manner of achieving that success. While reluctant to make comparisons, he highlighted the qualities found in all the greats.

“The great drivers that I have been lucky enough to work with, the thing they do all share in com-mon is that they have that ability to drive and process at the same time,” he observed.

MORE KNOWLEDGE

Like the others, Vettel learned from his mistakes. He had complete recall when he got out of the car and continued to analyse and learn from what had happened during the race.

“You see it with Sebastian all the time. I always have the impression that every time he gets in the car, he gets in with a bit more knowledge than he got out last time,” said

Newey.“His driving has gone from very

talented but slightly raw at times to incredibly well-rounded now. You could occasionally in 2009 and 2010 criticise him for making slightly ill-judged moves and hav-ing accidents.

“You could criticise him possi-bly for not being able to overtake. I think a lot of people felt that if he didn’t start from pole and control the race from the front, then he was not so good.

“I think you really can’t make those criticisms any more. It’s dif-ficult to see a chink in his armour really. He learns all the time.”

Schumacher was able to mould his Ferrari team around him as the clear number one and he reaped the benefits of that.

Even then, the German’s deci-sion to leave Benetton for Ferrari in 1995 after winning two titles meant he had to wait another five years before becoming champion again.

Vettel, who is well aware of his place in Formula One history, could be tempted to do likewise one day but his Red Bull bosses were confi-dent that remained a long way off.

BASEL - Roger Federer’s difficult season continued on Sunday when he lost to Juan Martin del Potro in the final of the Basel Open for the second year running. The Swiss played some of his best tennis this year but it was not enough to avoid a 7-6 (3) 2-6 6-4 defeat against the powerful Argentine and his 220-kph serve.

After Del Potro took the first set, the momentum seemed to swing Federer’s way when he raced through the second after breaking serve in the second game.

But the turning point came in the first game of the third set when Federer, who has managed only one win against a top-10 opponent and one tournament win all year, was broken after leading 40-15.

Del Potro hit a stunning return on his way to break point and, although the Swiss saved one point with an amazing backhand overhead smash, Del Potro took the game when Federer overhit a forehand.

Del Potro went on to take the set and win his fourth ATP title of the season after Tokyo, Washington and Rotterdam. Federer would have qualified for the season-ending World Tour Finals if he had won, although he should still book his place there at next week’s Paris Masters.

A win over Kevin Anderson or Mikhail Youzhny in his second round match on Wednesday will be enough to ensure he reaches the season finale for a record-equalling 12th consecutive year, tying with Ivan Lendl for most successive appearances.

Federer, whose season has been peppered with embarrassing defeats to lower-ranked opponents, was happy with Sunday’s performance, where he interspersed some stunning winners with unforced errors including five double faults. Yet he could not take comfort from the result.

“I am a winner, I don’t take much confidence from losing matches,” he told reporters. “I am happy about the level of my play, it’s getting better but it’s not in losing where I get much confidence.”

Del Potro admitted he lost his way in the second set before recovering. “I made a lot of mistakes and you can’t afford to relax in a final,” he said. “My big challenge is to get closer to the top four players and the only way to do that is when you have a chance to play against them.”

Federer, who won his last grand slam title at Wimbledon in 2012 before claiming a silver medal at the London Olympics, has failed to reach the final of a major tournament this season for the first time since 2002.

His only tournament success was at the low-key Halle event and he was beaten in the final at Rome.

He lost in the Australian Open semi-finals to Andy Murray, fell at the last-eight stage to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the French Open, suffered a shock second-round defeat at Wimbledon to Sergiy Stakhovsky before losing to Tommy Robredo in the U.S. Open fourth round.

His win over Tsonga in the Australian Open quarter-finals was his only victory against a top-ten ranked opponent this year.

LONDON - Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho paid tribute to Fernando Torres after the Spain striker made one goal and scored a late winner to earn a 2-1 victory over Premier League title rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

same - so credit to him.”Torres has been in sparkling form

of late and also struck twice in the midweek 3-0 victory at Schalke 04 in the Champions League.

A constant menace against City, he created the first goal when he tore past defender Gael Clichy on the right before crossing for German interna-tional Andre Schuerrle to execute a simple close range tap-in for his first Chelsea goal in the 33rd minute.

Sergio Aguero equalised with a fierce effort just after halftime but Tor-res then grabbed his opening Premier League goal of the season in dramatic style when he pounced on a mix-up between defender Matija Nastasic and goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Nastasic, facing his own goal, headed the ball beyond Hart and the Spaniard beat City centre back Martin Demichelis in a sprint before poking it into an empty net in the

90th minute.Mourinho praised Torres for

keeping his head up despite miss-ing an easy chance to score in the first half.

FIZZING SHOTThe Spaniard, who has often

struggled since joining Chelsea from Liverpool in January 2011, evoked memories of his halcyon days at Anfield when he spun sharply on the edge of the box and curled a fizzing shot against the City woodwork in the opening half.

“It was a fantastic performance by him and even better because there was an easy chance missed and that

makes it even more valuable because many times when a striker misses an easy chance he is affected for the rest of the game,” said Mourinho.

“That was the moment when he decided he would be the man of the match. The fans were amazing and supported him a lot, they see the way he works for the team.” Mourinho refused to take the credit for Torres’s improvement this season.

“We have done nothing with Fer-nando,” said the Chelsea manager. “It would be easy for me to say that but he deserves credit.

“We work with our methodology and we believe it improves players in terms of sharpness and speed.”

MADRID - Oliver Torres scored one of the fastest La Liga goals and David Villa struck twice as Atletico Madrid stayed hard of the heels of leaders Barcelona with a 5-0 drubbing of struggling Real Betis on Sunday.

Atletico’s thumping victory, their ninth in 10 outings this term, trimmed the gap to Barca back to one point after the champions had pulled four clear thanks to a 2-1 win at home to Real Madrid in Saturday’s ‘Clasico’.

It also stretched their lead over third-placed Real to five points and was the latest evidence Diego Simeone’s side may be genuine contenders for the title alongside vastly wealthier rivals Barca and Real come the end of the season.

Joseba Llorente set the record for the quickest La Liga goal in January 2008 when he scored for Real Valladolid after seven seconds and many of the spectators at the Calderon had yet to take their seats when Torres struck after a mere 14

seconds.Playmaker Koke broke clear

on the left of the penalty area and his low cross found its way to the 18-year-old who calmly stroked it into the net.

Betis regrouped but struggled to create any chances for an equaliser before Villa, who joined Atletico from Barca in the close season, made it 2-0 with a superb glanc-ing header eight minutes after halftime.

The Spain forward finished off a sweeping breakaway move with a thumping shot four minutes later and then set up La Liga top scorer Diego Costa to score his 11th of the campaign in the 65th minute.

Atletico captain Gabi capped a near-perfect night for the home side and brought a beaming smile to Simeone’s face when he drove home a loose ball in the second minute of added time to complete the rout.

Unbeaten Barca have 28 points, with Atletico on 27 and Real on 22. Betis, who are competing in the Europa League after finishing

seventh last term, are 18th on eight points.

Fourth-placed Villarreal con-tinued their impressive form since winning promotion back to the top flight and closed to within two points of Real when they thrashed regional rivals Valencia 4-1 at their Madrigal stadium.

It was an eventful afternoon for Villarreal’s Mexico forward Giovani Dos Santos, who scored a brilliant second goal after netting his first moments after fluffing a penalty.

Ikechukwu Uche and Hernan Perez also struck for the home side, while Ricardo Costa scored for Valencia as they slipped to a second straight defeat and are down in 11th position.

An Antoine Griezmann double set Real Sociedad on their way to a 3-0 win at home to Almeria that lifted the San Sebastian-based club, who have lost all three of their Champions League games this term, to ninth. Sevilla won 2-1 at home to 10-man Osasuna and are 10th.

MILAN — United States midfielder Michael Bradley scored late to help 10-man Roma beat Udinese 1-0 and set a Serie A record by winning its first nine matches of the season. Bradley came on as a substitute and broke the deadlock with his first touch of the match eight minutes from full time to keep Roma five points clear of Napoli and Juventus.

Roma played the final 24 minutes with 10 men after Maicon was sent off for a second yellow card.

Juventus recorded eight opening victories in 1930-31 and 1985-86, and also won nine straight matches to start 2005-06 but was stripped of its title-winning season in the “calciopoli” match-fixing scandal.

“At the end it was three deserved points, we really gave everything,” Bradley said. “This is a team which has great desire and determination. “Last year didn’t go how we wanted it to, now it’s going a bit better. We’re working every day to improve and we’re not thinking about the statistics.”

Elsewhere, Gonzalo Higuain converted two controversial penalties to help Napoli beat 10-man Torino 2-0, while Juventus beat Genoa by the same scoreline. “Along with Napoli, we’re on a run that befits a top of the table team,” Juventus coach Antonio Conte said. “But Roma’s results skew everything a bit, their run is the very best.

“We scored two goals and missed so many other chances. But in a certain sense, the good news of today is that we didn’t concede.” A stoppage-time winner handed Parma a 3-2 victory over AC Milan, which had fought back from two goals down.

Udinese was unbeaten in 22 home games and it almost got off to the perfect start when Luis Muriel’s effort crashed off the left upright with less than three minutes on the clock.

Roma clearly missed talismanic captain Francesco Totti, who is out injured, and Udinese had another fantastic chance in the 38th minute when Gabriel Silva chipped goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis, but Leandro Castan cleared off the line with an acrobatic overhead kick.

A Roma victory appeared even more unlikely when Maicon was given his marching orders in the 66th.

However, Bradley scored the winner minutes after being brought on for Marco Borriello. Kevin Strootman was given too much time on the ball and he spotted Bradley’s run, allowing the U.S. international to drill the ball into the bottom left corner.

LONDON — FIFA will seek assurances from Russia’s 2018 World Cup leadership next week that they are taking action to eradicate racism from matches, while insisting ahead of talks that the country is not at risk of losing the tournament.

The problem of racism at matches in Russia was highlight-ed during a globally-televised Champions League match on Wednesday when CSKA Mos-cow fans hurled abuse at Man-chester City midfielder Yaya Toure.

“We are dealing now with actual problems,” FIFA Presi-dent Sepp Blatter said Sunday in London. “We are not dealing

with the problems that may hap-pen somewhere in the world. It is the question of racism today, and I’m dealing with that today.

“And we will go back to the (FIFA) executive committee with what the situation is actu-ally and what came with the last incidents we have had (in Russia).” Blatter’s 27-member FIFA board includes the Russian sports minister, Vitaly Mutko.

More immediately, FIFA Sec-retary General Jerome Valcke will hold talks in Moscow with 2018 World Cup chief executive Alexey Sorokin on Monday and Tuesday. The racism problem with be restricted to their one-to-one talks rather than featuring in the main organizing commit-tee board meeting.

“There are sanctions but in order to prevent (racism) there is an educational program to have in place in Russia,” Valcke said, alongside Blatter. “So they are working on a program, the local organizing committee together with the Russian authorities, and definitely that will be dis-cussed.”

Despite Blatter wanting teams kicked out of competitions if there is sustained racist abuse by fans, he sees no need to take FIFA tournaments away from whole countries blighted by rac-ism in stadiums.

“I have never said they have to take the competition out (of the country) because you cannot take a whole competition out,” Blatter said. “It’s impossible.”

Reuters PARIS - A last-gasp goal by Blaise

Matuidi salvaged a 2-2 draw for lead-ers Paris St Germain at 10-man St Etienne as the Ligue 1 champions took their unbeaten run to 30 games in all competitions on Sunday.

It was heartbreak for the home team, who were 2-0 up after 51 min-utes, as midfielder Matuidi’s cross bounced past keeper Stephane Ruffier three minutes into stoppage time.

St Etienne, who had Fabien Lem-oine sent off for a second caution in the 59th minute, pounced on two blunders from centre half Marquinhos to take command before Edinson Cavani pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 68th minute.

PSG have 25 points from 11 games and lead Monaco, who beat

Olympique Lyon 2-1 earlier on Sun-day with Radamel Falcao ending a three-match scoreless streak, on goal difference. Lille are two points adrift in third place after they beat Nantes 1-0 on Friday.

St Etienne went in front when an awful Marquinhos clearance was in-tercepted by Romain Hamouma and his centre was expertly volleyed in by Benjamin Corgnet after 18 minutes.

The home team doubled their lead six minutes after the break when an-other attempted clearance by Marqu-inhos bounced off the back of a team mate and fell kindly to goal-scorer Hamouma.

Lemoine was dismissed for a foul on Ezequiel Lavezzi and PSG started their fightback when Cavani netted his seventh league goal of the season by tapping in a cross from Maxwell.

U.S. NSA spied on 60 million Spanish phone calls in a month: reportReuters

U.s. NsA spied on 60 mil-lion spanish phone calls in a month: report

Britain’s national weather centre the Met Office warned of falling trees, damage to buildings and disruption to power supplies and transport as the storm hit England’s southwest coast late Sunday.

Between 20 and 40 millimetres (0.8 to 1.6 inches) of rain were predicted to fall within six to nine hours as the storm tracked eastwards across Britain, with a chance of localised flooding.

Wind gusts of up to 99 miles (159 kilometres) per hour whipped across southern England and south Wales on Monday, forecasters said.

Waves crash onto the cliffs surrounding Porth-leven, Cornwall, southwest England, Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013. Forecasters say a severe storm

will hit the southern half of Britain later Sun-day, bringing heavy rains and gusts of 60 to 80 miles per hour (100 to 130 kilometers per hour,

with the potential to cause widespread and severe disruption from falling trees, power cuts

and flooding.
