Mangupura (Bali Post) –Badung House of Representatives Commission A has been going to

the central government to solve the teacher crisis at Badung as they think there are still spaces for central government to produce moratorium in

-man Satria, when contacted last Friday (30/9) stated that Badung demand for teachers is high following 250 teachers retiring and predicted will be 650 by the end of 2012.

It was said if there are no recruitments until 2013 it is worried that Badung will have no teachers and affects studying processes. Even so schools took committee teachers, the other problem would be salary as committee teacher are less than minimal salary which in Badung IDR 1,221,000 per month. “This is the reality and a problem that needs at-tention so the quality of education can be better,” Satria stated.

Moreover stated, in the three ministers agreeing letter connected to the moratorium, It was said in the ‘shopping workers’ regulations stated can’t be more than 50 percent of the Regional Budget and Expenses

recruit civil state workers especially for teachers and medics. “Looking at these holes so we have to work hard to recruit them. This beginning of October we ask all institute involved such as Education Agency, Health Agency, BKD Badung, and Badung Hospital for consultation and listen to State Aparatur Sources Using Minister explanation,” Satria concluded. Both hamlets in the most apprehensive condition are the Munduk Andong Tengah and Munduk Andong Atas. During this time, residents at both hamlets only rely on the supply of rainwater. When it never rains, they continue to get confused. “Our water sup-ply in the reservoir has bogged down for over three months as the rain never comes,” sighed Wayan Nuarta, 27, a resident of Munduk Andong Tengah, Friday (Sep 30).

Residents at both hamlets

In details, Munduk Andong Tengah came to 20 families and Munduk Andong Atas did 60 families. All residents relied on the rainwater accom-modated in each water tank. Every house compound had a water tank donated by a phi-lanthropist a few years ago. It

averagely could accommodate up to 500 liters of water. When being full, the water supply in the tank could be used up to four months. Since there was no rain, lots of water tanks were neglected as did not contain any water. “We have to take water to the source by passing through a steep path,” said Nuarta.

Last Saturday, this man was seen so busy carrying jerrycan. He went down the steep path on foot from the highway to the water source at Munduk Andong Bawah. Every day, Nuarta had to take at least two jerrycans of water. The water itself was used to meet the cooking and drinking needs. Meanwhile, for bathing and washing, they had to walk to the water source near the creek.

According to Nuarta, it was

impossible for his party to persistently buy clean water because it was quite expensive. Moreover, local residents only relied on the income from the yield of garden. Most local residents preferred to find clean water by their own ef-fort. They expected the springs could be taken up to the house of each resident.

Approximately in 1999, the local residents had set up a pump to drain the water into their homes. However, since it was required high cost of elec-tric bills, the facility eventually turned dormant. “Many people could not afford to pay the elec-tric bill. So, the water pump is no longer used,” said another resident. In reality, the spring at Munduk Andong Bawah was relatively large. However, the fairly steep location made peo-

In this simulation Ahmad Yani was closed from East and West sides, where the Raider troops show the fast way in freeing captives inside the campus. The simulation invited a lot of public to see. Two units of war vehicles including trail kind motorcycles also show how the army chased the bus with the captives.

In the simulation the negotiator of the Raider troops did try to front the armed group yet the group asked for IDR 2 billion. Even though it’s fulfilled, the unknown group still captivated a girl student and a lecturer which then brought by a bus. The Army led by Dan Yonif 900 Raider, Lieutenant Agustinus Dedy Prasetya, directed his terror management team, Gultor 900 Raider. Chase act between them happened all along Ahmad Yani Street, Singaraja, causing traffic, which then they success-fully stopped the bus in front of Mumbul Market. Without any fight back, the armed group surrendered. “We did the simulation to prepare in securing the coming ASEAN conference,” Prasetya explained.

Dandim 1609 Buleleng, Lieutenant Inf. Nugroho also stated the same and he thinks this is to prepare the Land Army in protecting territorial areas especially in their awareness. (kmb15)

Khan is “the uncle of Siraj and Badruddin Haqqani ... one of the highest ranking members of the Haqqani network and a revered elder of the Haqqani clan,” the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement.

Siraj, or Sirajuddin, Haqqani and his brother, Badruddin, are sons of veteran Afghan militant commander Jalaluddin Haqqani.

NATO said Khan had managed bases and operations in both Af-ghanistan and Pakistan, and moved forces across the border for attacks,

as well as transferring funds and sourcing supplies. The force called him “the senior Haqqani com-mander in Afghanistan.”

Khan was captured on Tues-day in Jani Khel district of Paktia province along with his deputy and bodyguard, in an operation by Afghan and foreign forces, NATO said.

He was heavily armed but “sub-mitted ... without incident or re-sistance,” the force said. It did not detail how they had identified Khan.

The Taliban, to whom the Haqqani network has pledged al-legiance, denied that Khan had been captured.

“I have just spoken with Haji Mali Khan, he is fine and is somewhere else and hasn’t been detained,” spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told Reuters. “This is a baseless news and it has been released in order to weaken Mujahideen’s morale,” he said.

Members of the Haqqani net-work declined to comment on the ISAF statement, but confirmed to Reuters that Khan is Sirajuddin Haqqani’s maternal uncle.

They said he was not a senior commander but his relatives are in-volved in the Haqqanis’ fight against NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Venezuela’s firebrand Presi-dent Hugo Chavez reiterated his support for ousted Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi and embattled Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, calling them “brothers.”

“I ask God for the life of our brother Kadhafi... No one knows where Kadhafi is, I think he went to the desert,” Chavez told official television VTV on Saturday.

The 57-year-old Venezuelan leader has defended Kadhafi since the start of the uprising against his regime in February, accusing NATO of using the conflict to gain control over Libya’s oil.

The whereabouts of Kadhafi, who ruled the north African na-tion with an iron fist for more than

four decades, are unknown.Chavez has refused to recog-

nize Libya’s new interim leader-ship, ridiculing its UN repre-sentative Ibrahim Dabbashi as a “puppet” and a “dummy.”

The Venezuelan leader said he had spoken by telephone late Fri-day with Assad, who is fighting “an aggression from Yankee imperial-ists and their European allies.”

“Our solidarity is with the Syrian people, with President Bashar,” he added.

Foreign ministers of the eight member states in the leftist ALBA bloc plan to travel to Syria to prevent what Chavez called “the madness of war by (US) President (Barack) Obama and his impe-rial allies to destroy the Syrian people.”

Attackers used explosives and gunfire to target a military patrol near a wedding in violence-torn northeastern Nigeria, with residents reporting two civilians killed in the violence.

The incident on Saturday, Nige-ria’s independence day, occurred in Maiduguri, hit by scores of attacks blamed on an Islamist sect known as Boko Haram, which also claimed an August bombing of UN head-quarters in the capital Abuja.

“There was a bomb and gun attack on one of our patrol teams yesterday,” said Lieutenant Colonel Hassan Mo-hammed, spokesman for a military task force deployed to Maiduguri. “Our men responded to the attack but details are still sketchy.”

Residents reported that two peo-ple were left dead after the bomb blast and an exchange of gunfire between soldiers and residents. It was unclear whether they were killed by the bomb or gunfire.

Those attending a nearby wed-ding took cover when the violence

broke out. Two residents said those killed were not part of the wedding.

Thousands have fled Maiduguri in recent months out of fears of further violence. Dozens of similar bomb blasts have hit the city as well as assassinations blamed on Boko Haram.

While most of its attacks have occurred in Nigeria’s northeast, Boko Haram also claimed responsi-bility for the August 26 bomb blast at UN headquarters in Abuja that killed at least 23 people.

Temple CeremonyCalendar Event for August 31 through October 5, 2011

EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sail-ings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. BANGKOK — The Twitter account of Thailand’s new prime min-ister has been hacked by someone posting criticism of her policies.

Government spokeswoman Thitima Chaisaeng says Prime MinisterYingluck Shinawatra’s account was hacked into Sunday morning. The Information and Communication Ministry is looking into whowas responsible.

At least eight messages were posted accusing Yingluck’s govern-ment of incompetence and cronyism.

Yingluck’s Pheu Thai Party won a landslide election victory in July, but critics charge she is just a puppet of her brother, former PrimeMinister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Thaksin was ousted by a military coup in 2006 after being accused

his opponents and supporters.

BEIJING — In a quiet, leafy neighborhood of Beijing,a woman has been living in enforced isolation in her book-

married to a Nobel Peace Prize winner the Chinese govern-ment calls a criminal.

In the year since jailed democracy campaigner Liu Xiaobowas awarded the prize, his wife Liu Xia has also becomea prisoner. She has largely been held incommunicado, ef-fectively under house arrest, watched by police, withoutphone or Internet access and prohibited from seeing all buta few family members.

“Liu Xia has been completely cut off from communica-tion with the outside world, and leads a lonely and oppressedlife,” said Beijing activist Zeng Jinyan, the wife of anotherwell-known dissident who has endured bouts of surveil-lance and harassment. “It has already been a year, I dare notimagine how much longer she must bear this pain.”

The Nobel prize announced last Oct. 8 cheered China’sfractured, persecuted dissident community and brought callsfrom the U.S., Germany and others for Liu’s release, but alsoinfuriated Beijing, and authorities harassed and detaineddozens of his supporters in the weeks that followed.

China has a long history of punishing family membersof government critics. But the Liu case is different because

the government seems intent on preventing the frail-looking51-year-old poet with close-cropped hair and wire-rimmedglasses from becoming a rallying point for political activ-ists.

“The Chinese government simply just do not want peopleto be reminded of the emotional, the human aspect of LiuXiaobo in jail, and to do that they also want to erase Liu Xiafrom people’s memory,” said Wang Songlian, a researcherwith China Human Rights Defenders in Hong Kong.

The harsh treatment of Liu Xia seemingly runs afoul ofChina’s laws and might be the most severe retaliation eversuffered by the family of a Peace Prize laureate. “As far as Iknow, the way she is treated is unprecedented in the historyof the Nobel Peace Prize,” said Geir Lundestad, secretaryof the Norwegian Nobel Committee. “Her situation is ex-tremely regrettable.”

Lundestad said the committee is also worried about LiuXiaobo because it has not received any new informationabout his situation since late last year. The government didnot comment.

JAKARTA — The chanting crowd at the radical Muslim protest in Indonesia stood out for its nor-malcy: smartly dressed business-men, engineers, lawyers, smiling mothers, scampering children.

At a time when al-Qaida seems to be faltering, the recruitment of such an educated, somewhat mainstream following is raising fears that Hizbut Tahrir, an enigmatic global move-ment, could prove more effective at radicalizing the Islamic world than outright terrorist groups.

Active in 45 countries, Hizbut is now expanding in Asia, spreading its radical message from Indonesia to China. It wants to unite all Mus-lim countries in a globe-spanning bloc ruled by strict sharia law. It tar-gets university students and profes-sionals, working within countries to try to persuade people to overthrow their governments.

The movement’s appeal to an often influential part of society worries ex-perts. Its goal of an Islamic state may be far-fetched, but it could still under-cut efforts to control extremism and develop democracy in countries such as Indonesia, which the U.S. hopes will be a vital regional partner and a global model for moderate Islam.

“Our grand plan over the next five to 10 years is to reinforce the people’s lack of trust and hope in the regime,” said Rochmat Labib, the group’s Indonesia chairman in a rare interview with a Western reporter. “That’s what we are doing now: converting people from de-mocracy, secularism and capitalism to Islamic ideology.”

Hizbut Tahrir, which means The Party of Liberation, is also raising its profile in the U.S. after operat-ing largely underground since the 1990s. Its first major event was a 2009 conference, followed by an-other one in Chicago this June.

Starkly conflicting views swirl around Hizbut. It has been described as both a peaceful movement to restore one-time Islamic glory and a breeding ground for future suicide bombers, “a conveyer belt to terrorism,” in the words of Zeyno Baran, an expert on Islam in the modern world.

Banned in most countries, Hiz-but remains legal in others, includ-ing the United States, Great Britain, Australia and Indonesia, where its leaders say it has spread to all 33 provinces. It is closely monitored everywhere, and often operates on the knife-edge of legality.

“The rhetoric they have goes to the fringe of democracy,” said Hans Joergen Bonnichsen, the former head of Denmark’s intelligence service. But the Danish Justice Min-istry has twice asked the nation’s top prosecutor if Hizbut could be banned under Danish law, and both times the answer was no.

Its new frontier in Asia ranges from Indonesia and neighboring Malaysia to Pakistan and China, where Beijing has accused it of inciting violence among Muslim Uighurs in the remote west. It has also become the most widespread, and persecuted, radical Muslim group in Central Asia.

The Indonesia chapter is believed to be the largest, with a following estimated in the hundreds of thou-sands, according to Sidney Jones, an

expert on Islam in Southeast Asia.“They are a real force here. They

are a greater long-term threat to Indo-nesia than people who use violence,” said Jones, a Jakarta-based analyst with the International Crisis Group think tank. “Collectively, hardline civil society can have a bigger effect than jihadists and terrorists.”

Her words are echoed by anti-terrorism expert Zhang Jiadong of China’s Fudan University, who said Hizbut is “more harmful than ter-rorist organizations, because it has more influence on ordinary people.” The group, estimated at up to 20,000 members in China, is more likely to foment riots or rebellions than terrorist attacks, he said.

Ismail Yusanto, the group’s urbane spokesman in Indonesia, in-sists that “we are a peaceful Islamic movement.”

The claims of nonviolence con-trast with the movement’s fiery rhet-oric, which calls for the annihilation of Israel — that’s what led to it being outlawed in Germany in 2003 — and exhorts Muslims to fight coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. One flyer shows a decapitated Statue of Liberty with New York City aflame in the background.

The U.S. State Department says the group “may indirectly generate support for terrorism but there is no evidence that it has committed any acts of terrorism.”

Hizbut followers may later “graduate” to terror under the tu-telage of other groups. Often cited are the first British suicide bombers, Asif Hanif and Omar Khan Sharif, who attacked a Tel Aviv bar in 2001 and had past Hizbut links.

The Chinese dominance in the domestic market was believed to have been caused by the low number of local industries producing similar goods causing imports to increase, House of Representatives (DPR) Commission VI nember Mustafa Kamal said here on Saturday.

Quoting the results of his own observations, Kamal who is also chief of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) faction in the DPR said in the January-August 2011 period alone, the import of certain products such as foods, drinks, electronics, garments and children`s toys from China reached US$962.8 mil-lion, while the overall value those imports during the period stood at US$2.86 billion.

“Our industries should be able to produce similar products of high quality so that we can minimize the import of goods from China,”

he said.He further criticized the

government`s policies of allowing the import of Chinese electronics which accounted for 33.3 percent or US$817.9 million.

As a matter of fact, one of the Industry Ministry`s visions was to develop technology into a spearhead of product development and market creation. “How can we develop domestic technological products if Chinese products are not restricted,” he said.

The lawmaker noted that the import of Chinese toys now repre-sented 70.6 percent of the overall figure.

The best solution to the Chinese domination of the domestic market was protecting the domestic market and empowering domestic traders so that they could compete with foreign rivals, he said.

Balangan is one of the surfing beaches on the western side of the Bukit peninsula located just north of Dreamland. To get there from Kuta you take Bypass Ngurah Rai heading towards Nusa Dua and look for the Uluwatu turn off to the right after about 10 minutes.

Basically head up the hill and go straight through the small cross-roads, ignoring the sign for Balan-gan to the right. Keep going and turn right at this entrance, which is also the Dreamland entrance. Follow the road downhill for a mile or so, you go through 3 roundabouts and will pass a small sign to the left saying Dreamland. Keep going and shortly you will see this turnoff with a sign for Balangan.

This road becomes heavily rut-ted, after all the Bukit is a lime-stone plateau and the rain just chews up the ground. Riding slowly you can get down and can actually get a motorbike or SUV

all the way to the beach, which is nice!

On the way down to the beach you will pass a couple of signs for accommodation. There are actually 3 places but the last one has not yet got themselves organized enough to fix up a sign. The 3 places are La Joya, Flower Bud Bungalows and Coconut Hummingbird.

All bungalows are in semi-mod-ern style with circular bamboo roof and sliding glass doors affording views of the surf.

Heading down the hill you can park your car / bike or continue down. The entry to the beach is split by a gully that is dry most of the year. To the right is a line of shacks that service the surfing crowd. None were doing much business when I visited being March, there was surf however and I saw plenty of locals enjoying good waves.

If you keep walking to the far right side of the beach you will dead end at Pura Balangan, the lo-cal temple.

S AN AI - China’s manufactur-ing improved slightly in September, fora second month of gains, with domesticdemand helping to offset weakness inthe export sector, according to a surveyreleased Saturday.

The China Federation of Logistics andPurchasing, an industry group, said itsmonthly purchasing managers index rose0.3 points from the month before to 51.2,showing activity expanding slightly.Figures above 50 show expansion, andbelow contraction.

The survey followed a similar onereleased Friday by HSBC that, at 49.9,showed little change from August, suggesting still sluggish growth in de-mand.

It said most areas showed only modestimprovement, and warned of a need to

moderated to 6.2 percent in August afterhitting a three-year high of 6.5 percentin July.

The report said the survey’s resultsshow slowing growth in the raw materialsand energy industries and stable progressin consumer goods industries. In short, “American Horror Story” doesn’t really scare you. It just gets in your head. The big unknown: Is it wily enough to stay there, week after week?

Alert: Spoilers coming up — which is another way of saying you might just as well apply the time you’d spend reading this to watching the premiere (which airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. EDT), then making up your own mind. You’ll find it a memorable

experience, at least. From the fertile imaginations of

Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk (“Glee,” ‘’Nip/Tuck”), “American Horror Story” has a premise that is simple and time-honored: A haunted house is occupied by a likable, re-markably unsuspecting family.

Ben Harmon (played by Dylan McDermott) is a Boston psychiatrist who has been caught cheating by his wife, Vivien (the wonderful Connie

Britton of “Friday Night Lights”). She already was reeling from a late-term miscarriage. They need to make a fresh start. They and their teenage daughter, Violet (Taissa Farmiga) pull up stakes and head cross-country for Los Angeles.

“This p lace i s our second chance,” Ben tells Vivien, whose forgiveness he desperately seeks — if for no other reason than be-cause she hasn’t slept with him for almost a year.

LOS ANGELES — The judge overseeing the trial of the doctor charged in Michael Jackson’s death told the lead defense attor-ney Friday that he found an inter-view his law partner conducted on the case “shocking” and possible grounds for contempt.

Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor told attorneys he watched the interview during a break with his mouth open because attorney Matt Alford is identified as a member of Dr. Conrad Murray’s defense team and criticized a key prosecution witness.

The judge noted that Alford used the pronouns “we” and “our” to describe decisions about the doctor’s defense. Alford, a partner of Murray’s lead defense lawyer Ed Chernoff, was interviewed outside the courthouse by “The Today Show.”

NEW YORK — Culinary confession time for Whoopi Goldberg: Potato chips are her undoing. At the New York City Wine and Food Festival on Fri-day, Goldberg said she “can’t resist them. It’s terrible. And fried chicken, but that’s so ethnic I’m afraid to say it out loud.” And, she added, she won’t “eat

watermelon in public, just on principle.”

Goldberg is hosting the festi-val’s annual Burger Bash compe-tition but admits that it’s an odd job for a woman who doesn’t cook. That is, with one excep-tion: Every year she tries to recre-ate her late mother’s Thanksgiv-ing turkey.

Goldberg says her mom “made a great holiday turkey. And every

year I try it.” She says it’s how they reconnect. And, Goldberg adds, it’s the only thing she knows how to make.

NEW YORK - Just when you needed it, the FX network is throwing “American Horror Story” at you. To judge from its first two episodes, it’s a robust diversion from the real-life droughts and hurricanes, jobless-ness and political stalemate that were already giving you the willies. It aspires to be “The Shining”-meets-”Rosemary’s Baby,” with “Carrie” and “Don’t Look Now” tossed in. But more than a dead-on horror show, it’s a homage to cinematic spookery. And a good one.

mouth open” while watching the interview, Pastor said, because Al-ford was identified as a member of Murray’s defense team, according to court transcripts. He also called the interview shocking.

Attorneys and the judge hud-dled in several sidebar confer-ences throughout the day on the issue. Alford criticized a key prosecution witness, Alberto Al-varez, in the interview. Alvarez, a bodyguard for Jackson, testified Thursday that Murray scooped up vials of medicine and placed them in a bag before telling him to call 911.

Pastor ordered Alford to appear in his courtroom on Nov. 15 for a contempt hearing. At the end of a heated conference on the issue, Pastor said Alford was considered a witness.

That came after Chernoff told the judge to hold him in contempt and not punish Alford. Prosecu-tors complained about the inter-

view Friday morning. The interview with Ann Curry

came hours after the judge warned defense attorneys not to com-ment on the case out of court.

“I am serious about interviews

The loss is important as a marker of global warm-ing, returning the Canadian Arctic to conditions that date back thousands of years, scientists say. Floating icebergs that have broken free as a result pose a risk to offshore oil facilities and potentially to shipping lanes. The breaking apart of the ice shelves also reduces the environment that supports microbial life and changes the look of Canada’s coastline.

Luke Copland is an associate professor in the ge-ography department at the University of Ottawa who co-authored the research. He said the Serson Ice Shelf shrank from 79.15 square miles (205 square kilometers) to two remnant sections three years ago, and was further diminished this past summer.

Copland said the shelf went from a 16-square-mile (42-square-kilometer) floating glacier tongue to 9.65 square miles (25 square kilometers), and the second section from 13.51 square miles (35 square kilometers) to 2 square miles (7 square kilometers), off Ellesmere Island’s northern coastline.

This past summer, Ward Hunt Ice Shelf’s central area disintegrated into drifting ice masses, leaving two

separate ice shelves measuring 87.65 and 28.75 square miles (227 and 74 square kilometers) respectively, re-duced from 131.7 square miles (340 square kilometers) the previous year. “It has dramatically broken apart in two separate areas and there’s nothing in between now but water,” said Copland.

Copland said those two losses are significant, espe-cially since the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf has always been the biggest, the farthest north and the one scientists thought might have been the most stable.

“Recent (ice shelf) loss has been very rapid, and goes hand-in-hand with the rapid sea ice decline we have seen in this decade and the increasing warmth and extensive melt in the Arctic regions,” said Ted Scambos, lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado, remarking on the research.

Copland, who uses satellite imagery and who has conducted field work in the Arctic every May for the past five years, said since the end of July, pieces equaling one and a half times the size of Manhattan Island have broken off. Co-researcher Derek Mueller, an assistant professor at Carleton University’s geog-raphy and environmental studies department, said the loss this past summer equals up to three billion tons. Copland said their findings have not yet been peer reviewed since the research is new, but a number of scientists contacted by The Associated Press reviewed the findings, agreeing the loss in volume of ice shelves is significant.

A rare virus has killed three people and sickened nearly 100 in Japan, the Philippines, the United States and the Netherlands over the past two years, US health au-thorities said Friday. The culprit is human enterovirus 68 (HEV68), and its respiratory symptoms can be particularly dangerous to chil-dren, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in its

Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

In six separate clusters of the virus that showed up worldwide, patients commonly experienced cough, difficulty breathing and wheezing. The highest number of cases were found in Japan, where local public health authorities reported more than 120 cases last year.

However, the CDC said it could only confirm clinical data for 11 of those patients, all children, one of whom died. The Philippines had 21 cases in late 2008 and early 2009, causing two deaths, the CDC said.

Other cases surfaced in the Netherlands and the US states of Georgia, Pennsylvania and Arizona, for 95 total confirmed cases over two years.

The virus was first discovered in four children who were sick with pneumonia in California in 1962, but subsequent incidences have been rare and sporadic, according to the CDC.

“Identification of a large number of patients with HEV68 respiratory disease detected during a single season, such as described in this report, is a recent phenomenon,” it added.

WASHINGTON - Hate morn-ings, especially on Mondays? You may be surprised to know that much of the world doesn’t share that grumpy feeling.

Twitter shows people are more cheerful in the morning, get gloomier as the day wears on and rebound in the evening, with a peak right before bedtime. They’re also happier from December to late June, when days gradually lengthen in the Northern Hemi-sphere.

Using the micro-blogging site Twitter as a gauge of global senti-ment, social scientists studied 509 million tweets from 2.4 million users in 84 countries between February 2008 and January 2010, according to research reported on Thursday in the journal Science.

Bad news, even if it happens to a complete stranger, brings

Twitter users down, research by scientists from Cornell University suggests.

Twitter, the five-year-old site that lets users communicate 140-character posts, offers an unprec-edented chance to study human behavior and social networks, the scientists said.

Those brief posts get down to the nitty-gritty, showing that Twit-ter users prefer bacon to sausage and Cheerios to Frosted Flakes, Cornell sociologist and co-author Michael Macy said in a telephone interview on Friday.

“Twitter offers an unprec-edented opportunity for social and behavioral scientists to study social behavior and interaction in real time with high temporal granularity -- hour by hour, day by day, over the course of the year -- and to do this at population scale with millions of people all over the world,” Macy said.

Pedrosa’s route to the front happened more by fortune than design, as accidents dominated the Japanese Grand Prix. Rossi was the first casualty, as he made contact with Lorenzo at Turn 2 on the opening, losing the front end and also collecting Yamaha’s Ben Spies as he slid into the gravel and out of the race.

Stoner meanwhile had protected his lead and rapidly built a lead of more than 1s, but on lap four suffered a huge wobble over the back straight bumps and missed his braking point into Turn 11 - running through the gravel and dropping down to seventh as a result.

The lead therefore transferred to Andrea Dovizioso, who had passed his Honda team-mate Pedrosa in the opening stages. Dovizioso however was one of three riders adjudged to have jumped the

start, and on lap five came into the pits for his ride-through - Gresini’s Marco Simoncelli and Tech 3’s Cal Crutchlow following him in after also falling foul of the stewards.

Victory became a straight fight be-tween Pedrosa and Lorenzo, and a series of fastest laps was enough to earn the Honda man his third win of the year.

Third had been a fight between the one Suzuki of Alvaro Bautista and the re-maining works Ducati of Nicky Hayden, but by the halfway distance Stoner had passed both as he fought his way back to third.

As he did so, Motegi claimed an-other two victims. Hayden ran deep and through the gravel at Turn 1 while try-ing to follow Stoner, while several laps later Bautista made a mistake of his own

accord, losing the front of the Suzuki at Turn 12 and crashing out from fourth.

Dovizioso and Simoncelli meanwhile had fought their way back through the field, and the Gresini rider claimed fourth one lap from the end with a typically ag-gressive pass at Turn 11. Having fallen on the opening lap incident with Rossi, Spies capped a fine comeback ride by finishing sixth, ahead of Hayden and Tech 3 Yamaha’s Colin Edwards.

Toni Elias on the LCR Honda had held sixth but crashed with just seven laps to go, while on his MotoGP debut Damian Cudlin (Pramac Ducati) was another Motegi casualty, crashing out just after the half-distance mark.

SEBASTIEN Ogier continues to lead the Rally of France - but Dani Sordo is closing in again. Although Citroen driver Ogier managed to pull out a 9.5-second advantage over the chasing Mini yesterday afternoon, Sordo was quicker on today’s opener Graviere de Bis-chwiller, fastest of all on Vignoble de Cleebourg, then equalled Ogier on the Haguenau street stage.

The gap between them now stands at 4.5s with three stages to go. “That’s not bad, but we need to be faster if we want to win,” said Sordo. “I’m pushing hard, I just have to keep up the pressure.”

Ogier said he was relishing the fight and expected it to go down to the wire. “I think it will be close because Dani is pushing hard,” he said. “He had a good drive this morning. It’s good fun.”

Petter Solberg (Solberg Citroen) and Jari-Matti Latvala (Ford) remain third and fourth, with Ford yet to apply the team orders that will elevate title contender Mikko Hirvonen up a place from his current fifth. Ar-mindo Araujo crashed his Motorsport Italia Mini out of seventh on the first stage of the morning, where Dennis Kuipers (FERM Ford) cemented his potential career-best sixth by setting a surprise second-fastest time.

Also flying is Ken Block - two top-six stage times have brought the Monster Ford up to ninth.

Dani Pedrosa handed Honda a home win in an eventful and attri-tional race at Motegi, which counted Ducati’s Valentino Rossi as one of its several victims. Jorge Lorenzo finished second and Casey Stoner a distant third following a mistake in the early stages. Stoner’s gap now stands at 40 points over Yamaha’s Lorenzo.
